2 Page 2 We didn t have a good gathering this month, we had a GREAT gathering. Twenty nine of us including visitors, some of them new members, some former, and some that want to be. Guess Who? Leon made the comment that this was the first time for him since we moved to Pam s. How many years has that been? Mr. Shumate was there (and I m not talking about Jose) either. Karen Schauer s sister Jennie and her friend and a SC-A member John Collins made a special effort to be with us today. Our DD Phil & Judy Stone presented our SC-O CD & ACD their Certificates of Officer Certification. Did I get that right? Doesn t matter, they are all happy about it. Remember to make plans for the Dist. Picnic coming up the 1st. Sat., Oct. 5 th.. Its always a good ride, good food, fellowship and a lot of fun. Sybil polished her horseshoe and won the 1 st. half of the 50/50, George got the other half. How lucky/or unlucky can you get Lynn Jackson? You could have received a reward for wearing a GWRRA logo of some sort but didn t. You also could have received an award if you had found your membership number in last months newsletter, but you didn t. His number was on page 4 of the August newsletter at the end of the DMV article. There is also a number in this newsletter, it could be yours! Hope everyone will ride safely and visit us again sometime, like on a ride or for our gathering next month? 3 PART 1 Page 3 By Mike & Beverly Cooley Our Route 66 trip started four years ago, Bev and I, along with another couple, Wayne and Sheila DeAntoni from Cape Coral, Fl., decided to ride Route 66. So, after much discussion and careful planning, we meet in Dalton, Ga. headed for Chicago, the northern end of the Mother Road. It was a bit of a challenge to find the proper start and with the help of a couple of cops and cabbies, we found it. They had nice signage of the beginning, but that was about it. We had dead ends and wrong turns from there all the way to L.A. We did find some real nice Rt. 66 museums and some small cities along the way where decked out as the old days of the 50s and 60s but it seemed to be to much time on Interstate then on the 2 lane road I hoped that we would ride. Started out on I-55 on and off all the way to St Louis. St Louis was interesting, we went into the arch and played in the park for awhile then getting ready to leave, Wayne, dropped his Harley on his left ankle. So we finally find our way out of town, now we are on Rt. 66 / I-44. Out of Illinois, and into Missouri, again same thing, on Interstate and off onto, what we thought was Rt. 66. Wrong, one was a dead end, next was a farm driveway, so back on I-44 until we saw Totem poles, so we exit and driving on a small road, passed the parking lot, and turned around in motel parking lot. Wayne drops the Harley again on his left ankle, that s twice now. That night in, Springfield, Sheila makes Wayne visit the ER, for x-rays and the Dr says it is bruised and will hurt, but is alright to keep going, so on we went. After crossing into Oklahoma, somewhere around Miami Ok. we stopped at a Trike shop to look at Motor Trikes. Bev and I took one for a ride but really didn't like it, too bouncy. Wayne refused to ride one for fear he would like it. So back on the road heading for Tulsa. Made it to Catoosa, home of the Blue Whale. The Blue Whale is a dock in a large pond, built by Hugh Davis in 1972, was an anniversary gift for his wife. The whale is open to the public. Wayne is really in pain so we called the trip on Rt. 66 and headed home. Thought maybe a couple of days in a Branson Hotel, would let Wayne rest his ankle well taking a short cut, at night, in the rain trying to find Branson, yup, Wayne dropped it again at a gas station. Now he really hurts. So after a few days R&R in Branson we head for Nashville TN. where I leave them and come home to get truck and trailer, to load Wayne s Harley and drive them home. More on the trip next month, it gets better. September 2013 Page 3

4 Page 4 THURSDAY NIGHT DINNER RIDES 8-22 Dinner ride to Westwood BBQ, Hartsville. Cool, no rain Three bikes and a trike to O Charlie s in Monroe for supper. 9-5 Five bikes and a trike to a buffet at Pat s Kitchen in Rockingham Dinner ride to Winn Buffet (Chinese) in Hartsville. Seven bikes, Nine members participated and the weather was again just perfect. Did you ever ride your bike around a NASCAR track? If not you have missed an experience like none other. On Sept. 7, 2013 a half dozen of us, (Ken Wade, George & Lynn Tiller, Lynn Jackson, Donald Tyner and Johnny #1) rode to the NASCAR track in Darlington, SC for a benefit ride sponsored by the Florence Co. Sheriff s department. It was fun with perfect weather to ride a couple of laps around the famous track, and we all left there without the also famous Darlington Stripes. After touring the track we took a break, then split in several different directions for the trip home. Was an enjoyable FUN day with Friends. September 2013 Page 4

5 Page 5 from SCDMV/forms/cycles.pdf Seeing And Being Seen While it s most important to keep track of what s happening ahead, you can t afford to ignore what s happening behind. Traffic conditions can change quickly. By checking your mirrors every few seconds, you can keep track of the situation. Knowing what s going on behind you can help you make a safe decision about how to handle trouble ahead. For instance, if you know someone is following you too closely, you may decide to avoid a problem ahead by turning away from it, rather than by trying to stop quickly and risk being hit by the tailgater. Frequent mirror checks should be part of your normal scanning routine. Make a special point of using your mirrors in these situations: When you are stopped at an intersection. Watch cars coming up from behind. If the driver isn t paying attention, he could be right on top of you before he sees you. Anytime you plan to change lanes. Make sure no one is about to pass you. Anytime you slow down, it is especially important to check the driver behind you. He may not expect you to slow down, or he may be unsure about exactly where you will slow down. For example, he might see you signal a turn and think you plan to slow for a turn at a distant intersection, rather than at a nearer driveway. Many motorcycles have rounded convex mirrors. These give you a wider view of the road behind you than do flat mirrors. However, they also make cars seem farther away than they really are. If you are not used to convex mirrors, get familiar with them before you ride. Here s how: While you are stopped, pick out a parked car in your mirror. Try to form a mental image of how far away it is. Then, turn around and look at it. See how close you came. Practice with your mirrors until you become a good judge of distance. Even then, allow extra distance before you change lanes. Head Checks Mirrors do a pretty good job of letting you see what is behind you. But motorcycles have blind spots just like cars. Before you change lanes or enter a lane of traffic, make sure to make a head check: turn your head, and look at traffic to the side. This is the only way you can be sure of spotting a car just about to pass you. On a road with several lanes, check the far lane as well as the one next to you. A driver in the distant lane may be headed for the same space you plan to take. September 2013 Page 5
