As I write this article, I m praying for our friends on the coast. This is hurricane season and it looks like Florence is going to be a devastating storm. So, let s keep everyone in our thoughts and prayers. Since our last gathering Wing Ding has come and gone. From what I hear it was one of the largest in quite a few years. Donna and I were unable to go due to extenuating circumstances (I had to work and we like to eat). But it is being held in Nashville next year, so maybe we will be able to make it there. We had a good turnout for the flight of the doves. Unfortunately, my alternator went out on the way there and left me on the side of the road. I got the bike back to the house and spent the rest of the morning putting an alternator in. Big Red and the treasure chest are back on the road and so far, no more problems (fingers crossed). Our fall picnic was held at the Moses s lake front property. It was a beautiful day for a picnic and to top it off Shannon took some of us for a leisurely boat ride. Thank you, Shannon and Susan, for hosting our picnic. The next big event on our calendar are our camp out and the Wings Over the Smokies. Some of us are camping and some are staying in cabins and hotels. If you can t stay all weekend please take a ride up to visit us. It only a couple hours to get there. Either way it is sure to be a good time. Ride Safe My Friends Jon & Donna Horning CD 1

Rider Education Rain Riding With all the wet weather lately and with fall coming on and weather changes coming a few rain riding tips might help. Many riders refuse to ride in the rain and for various reasons, but it is not something to be afraid of with a little preparation. After all, it is only water. Choose the right gear. Invest in a good rain suit in a bright color. Some rain jackets have an attached hood that can be worn under a helmet and stops the water trickle down the middle of the back. Wear something warm underneath, it is cooler when it rains. Adjust your speed. Slow down. Relax, don t white knuckle the bars, and make gradual inputs to turning and stopping. Easy on the brakes, don t clamp on, and use more rear brake. Ride smarter. Give more following distance, look further ahead and pay more attention to your surroundings. Watch for slippery spots. Fresh rain washes oil from the road and makes it slippery. Be careful at intersections, oil dropped from vehicles makes things slippery. Stay away from the center of the lane at intersections. Slow sooner for traffic lights. Ease away from stops to avoid a spinout. Watch for roadway objects. Manhole covers, railroad tracks, tar snakes and paint lines all become extra slippery when wet. Ride in the dry spots, it is alright to move around on the highway to avoid puddles. There is no reason to cancel a long-planned tour or stay holed up in the motel on a rainy day. The scenery takes on a different dimension when it is wet out. The grass is greener. The trees become different shades of green and when fall colors come on and a mist is floating across a mountain you will be glad you came out to enjoy. Richard Kitko, Ride Safe and Legal, Richard Kitko, GWRRA South Carolina District Educator Wind and Wings Episode Flowering Bridge Last month I had to take my tike to Shelby, NC for some repairs. I have a friend that lives there so I was able to spend some time with her. We decided to join her cousin and her husband on a trip to Lake Lure. It was a beautiful day for a drive. After visiting the lake, my friend asked if I had ever been to the Flowering Bridge? I said I had not. The Flowering Bridge is close to Chimney Rock State Park. It is an old bridge (which was replaced with a new on) that was decided not to tear it down but to make something beautiful out of it. The bridge is lined with all kinds of flower gardens. Families as well as organization have taken a space and created a garden using plants and flowers as well as old chairs, doors, and figurines. If you are in the Lake Lure area, stop and take a walk on the Flowering Bridge. Jan Joseph 3

On the 16 th of August I was mowing the back 40 and noticed a vibration. So, upon inspection I needed new blades. Someone had hit something and little pieces were missing. Ok it was me. I heard the clunk and tried to ignore it. Well, now I needed to take a road trip to get new blades. Of course, being a very nice day, I chose the bike for my little jaunt. I left the cabin and headed down Denny hwy to hwy 391, heading south to the traffic circle. From there followed 391 into Batesburg to Western Auto where I bought my replacement blades. Well I cannot just turn around and go home, so I take hwy 23 over to Monetta. I could not pass Peaches and Such without a short stop. Yes, I love this place. Tummy full so I continue on hwy 23 through Ridge Spring then Ward and finally into Johnston. Here I pick up hwy 121 up through Saluda then 6 more miles to our little piece of the woods. Beautiful day for a ride and if it wasn t so hot I may have gone another hundred miles. I could have made this trip much shorter in miles and time but what fun would that be. Wayne August 18 th, we had our Chapter S gathering, it was double points month and also our 21 st year celebration. I think we ended up with 27 people total. It was GREAT to see Judy out sharing her time with us. David was able to join us and was looking good after his stroke last month. Margaret rode her trike, yay and we had 11 other guests. I m horrible at trying to remember all their names, but chapters E & P were represented as well as District. Jon remembered Redick. There was some talk about changing his name to Jon/Wayne and getting him a cowboy hat, since the last few times it changed hands it was between us, lol. But he was able to hand him over to Gordon. We do not know the story yet but we know something silly happened. Don told us about the upcoming Road Capt. Course on 15 Sept and I should really do this along with a few others. Jan gave us our safety brief and reminded us about critters being more prevalent in the fall. Read your Wing World Great articles. Carol had her drawing and Judy won an umbrella. Lots of door prizes this month. Rick even won one. l Our 50/25/25 first drawing went to one of our visitors and Jon and I split the next one. YAY SO until next time lets put some miles on as well as visit some other chapters. Wayne 30 August we headed for Helen Georgia to camp for the weekend and tube down the river. But the main reason was a Pottery festival taking place there. We camped in a great well-kept campground, Leisure Acres in Cleveland Ga. We drove to our site and found it all shaded, oh ya. After we set up, we went to Walmart for weekend supplies and asked a lady in line for a local restaurant recommendation. Glenda s in Cleveland did not disappoint. Friday, we wondered around the outskirts of Helen Ga on some great roads. Enjoyed stopping at some of the local shops and pottery places. Friday evening Marianne s daughter, Briana arrived on her bike and stayed the remainder of the weekend. Saturday we all went to the Pottery museum for the festival. Lots of vendors showing off their stuff. Most of it was really cool. Marianne got more ideas for things she wants to do. They also had folk musicians having a jam session on the stage. Afternoon found us on the road to a state park that was having an event to raise money for a cabin they want to build. A handful of venders were there as well as more musicians and a small car/truck show. More back roads to avoid the Helen traffic and dinner at B. A s Fish House in Cleveland. I did not expect to get good seafood in the mountains of Georgia but it was great. Sunday the girls took a float down the river in tubes. Lots of fun. The place was busy when we got there but nothing like it was later in the day with people waiting for 2 hours in line to get on the bus. I was able to catch the girls going past the bridge in town. After their float, we took Briana for her birthday dinner / lunch at a German restaurant in town called Hofer s. Been there before and it is wonderful. A little ride around on the way back to the campground and hang out for a while. We had neighbors with two little Yorkie dogs that they took down that river in tubes as well. Monday we packed up and headed home with the rest of the world. Lucky for us most of our trip was on fairly deserted back roads. Great weekend with good memories and many roads to remember. Wayne 4

Wing Ding 40 By Kim Summer Buddy and I headed out on the bikes early Sunday, August 26 to meet up with Mike Coral at the Newberry County Rest Area in route to Knoxville for Wing Ding 40. It was fun riding through the mountains behind Mike s big fifth wheel camper, knowing he could see us with his rear-view camera, and also talk to us, just like we were in a convoy. A few stops for fuel and butt breaks and soon we were at the Southlake RV Park where we would spend the next week while at Wing Ding. We met Bill and Judy Dunaway there and decided to do a little recon on Monday to see where the convention was in downtown Knoxville and also rode out the Museum of Appalachia where the Welcome Party would be held Tuesday night. We ended up riding to Norris Dam and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We ate at the Golden Girls Restaurant in Clinton, Tennessee and got to ride back through downtown Knoxville to see the hundreds of homeless people that lived under an underpass. That in itself was an eye-opening experience. On Tuesday we cheered on the last region couples during the selection process. It was bittersweet knowing it was the last time we would see this. Then we enjoyed riding back out to the Museum of Appalachia for the welcome party. We picked up our registration packet there. Buddy s Barbeque was good, but the weather was a little warm. A crowd of Gold Wings were parked in the fields there. It was a sight to see. Wednesday morning we had to be at the convention center early to carry the state flags for opening ceremonies. Buddy carried the South Carolina flag and I carried a county flag (I still don t know which country it was). Then Wing Ding was open and the trade show began, so it was Buddy s happy place. The best thing about Wing Ding was seeing our friends from all over the US and Canada. There seemed to be a crowd and we found out later that over 8000 had attended. For lunch, we had tickets for the Couple of the Year Lunch on a paddleboat on the Tennessee River so we hopped on the free trolley to get to the river. We had a grand time on the boat and the lunch was good too. 5

Thursday was South Carolina s work day holding down the door prize booth, but we had fun doing it. Buddy seemed to pick on the South Carolina ladies and they reciprocated by trying to hurt him. He deserved it! Friday, the Dunaways, Buddy and I rode the back roads to Gatlinburg for lunch and to pick up a sign they had bought. It was a fine day until the rain exploded on us fifteen miles from the campground. We were glad to get into the dry camper. Saturday we went back to Wing Ding for one last visit to the vendors and to participate in the closing. We didn t win anything, but were glad we attended Wing Ding 40! On Satureday, 8 September we had our Chapter S picnic at the Moses waterfront pavilion. Kiyak rides, pontoon boat ride, great food and time with friends. What more could you ask for. 6

************************************************************************************** A few other things our chapter folks did was to participate in the Flight of the Doves in Clinton, both as riders. Yeah for Jan and safety riders on the motorcycles. I don t have the names of those guys. But I know Jon H tried to make it and Jon P was there... And the ladies worked with some ladies at the nursing home in Newberry to make some wreaths for their doors. 7
