Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 1 of 16 Goldwing Road Riders Association Chapter AZ-G, Green Valley, AZ Chapter Director: Dee Baird, July, 2013 Meets 8 AM, second Saturday of the month Cow Palace Restaurant, South I 19, Exit 48, Amado, AZ Chapter Directors Corner: Dee Baird If I d have known summer would arrive so quickly, I would have enjoyed those few minutes of spring a little more. I saw this on a poster and thought how well that described what happened in Green Valley this year. May saw a group of Gecko s ride to Chapter E, Sierra Vista for their Hug-A-Bug Fund Raiser. Please read other stories in the newsletter regarding this event. Then prior to taking off for Region F Convention in St. George, UT, a rowdy group played Miniature Golf, and ate a Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake to help Dennie Long celebrate getting a year older. May 21 st,22 nd & 23 rd saw groups leave at different times, as well as different routes, for St. George, Utah to attend Region F Convention. Most of us suffered through delays due to wrecks and bomb scares along our routes, but arrived safely, except for Wally & Linda Johnson. Their accident kept them from being able to attend, but we are all thankful they came through it all and are doing better than anyone would have expected. We are sorry for the loss of their truck, RV and trike. They received many good wishes and prayers. As you know, Chapter G s mascot, Gizmo has held captive Alfie, Chapter A s mascot and Peter Pronghorn, Chapter P s mascot. They were all on board headed to the Region F Convention with Linda and Wally, although they didn t make it to the Convention, they all survived with no injuries. A fantastic time was had by all at the Rally, (Excuse me Convention}.everyone helped out in making things run smoothly, registration, door greeters, jenga and wingo. We attended seminars, visited vendors, spent money and of course, what else do we Goldwingers do. ATE!. After the Convention, all left in different groups to different destinations.
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 2 of 16 Linda Johnson, Assistant Chapter Director welcomed all to the June 8th Gecko gathering with a good group attending, as well as a group from Chapter A who rescued Alfie, their Mascot. At left is Chapter A s Alfie and Chapter P s Peter Pronghorn being held hostage in chains by Chapter G s Gizmo. Linda with Dennis Ammons, Chapter A Director with rescued mascot Alfie
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 3 of 16 July 4 th found a small group of Gecko s still in Green Valley attending Gene & Jeannie McCaughey s Orphans Party. A hot but good time was had by all.
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 4 of 16 Thirty-two Goldwingers attended our July 13 th the Cow Palace, which included visitors from Chapter A & Chapter E. A great time was enjoyed by all. However, Chapter A stole Gizmo, but only for a week. We intend to make a ride next weekend to Chapter A to reclaim Gizmo and bring him home. August will enjoy another gathering at the Cow Palace on the 10 th and the Gas Light Theatre on the 18 th. Our September meeting will be on the 14 th. The New Mexico Rally/Convention is September 26 th 28 th. Hopefully by then the weather will cooperate for us to plan a group ride to Albuquerque for this event. Chapter G s Educator and Safety Officer, Carl Welch has stepped down. We want to Thank You Carl for a job well done. However, this leaves Chapter G in need of someone to fill this position. If you are interested or want more information on the Educator position, please contact me. If anyone has any ideas for a ride or any other activity to enjoy during these hot summer days, please give either Gayle, Dick or myself a call. We would very much like to have events to keep this group active, even through this hot weather. Our next major Goldwing happening is October 26 th 28 th. Tucson will host Arizona s District Convention Return to Tucson at Hilton East. Registration is available at Keep Cool if you can, and we ll see everyone back in Green Valley in the fall for some fantastic riding. Dee Baird, Chapter Director Chapter Store: Anita Nicholls Anita is on vacation in cool (although smoky because of a forest fire in the vicinity) Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Anita and Bill (Chapter Treasurer) will be back in Green Valley later this summer.
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 5 of 16 Ride Coordinator: Dick Beier As Ride Coordinator, I want to make sure sufficient information is made available in adequate time for longer rides. These take real planning ahead. I am more than happy to make phone calls, search the internet, help negotiate discounts, et cetera. But you are going to provide the overall plan. On the new website at you will find a link to Word form to help you plan. Fill it out as much as possible; then send it to me via any means available. This process should be started at least one month ahead of the ride date for each evening s lodging the ride will take, eg. A two day trip would require one month and a three day trip would require two months. If you cut the process short details may get left out and we won t get the ride plan published early enough. Once you have provided the initial plan we can discuss and flesh out the detail together. Good ride planning makes for really fun and enjoyable experience Dick Beier, Ride Coordinator Past events (in chronological order) Hug-A-Bug, Chapter E Fundraiser May 4th Hug-A-Bug Day dawned sunny, warm & windy. A group of 6 bikes/trikes headed to Chapter E at Sierra Vista to join in their fund raiser. Roger & Van joined us there for lots of camaraderie, food, fun and door prizes.
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 6 of 16 You know the saying. Some days the windshield, some days the bug, well the bug on the windshield of Roger Cameron of Chapter R hit the target and won him the prize money of $ Enid was lucky and took home some of the door prizes. Larry Howard, Director said it was a good turn out and wanted to thank everyone who showed up for helping to support them. All had a good ride and a good time. Roger & Van started the Hug-A-Bug ride, which went to Tombstone and Bisbee but got side lined along the way. Being the great guys these two are, they stopped to aid a lady in distress. Their story follows. This proves two things, 1 st off, Gold Wingers are always there to help when needed and 2 nd, you never know what you might find, do or see, when on a Gold Wing ride. Submitted by Dee Baird Door Prize Table A Few Chapter G Riders Linda, Rich Sturgeon, Enid, Galen
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 7 of 16 Van Hartline and I (Roger Pearsall) went to Chapter E s Hug-A-Bug. We met the rest of the guys there and enjoyed donuts and coffee. We then made the Hug-A-Bug run to Bisbee, Az. On the way we saw a bicyclist broke down on the side of the highway. It was a lady and her bicycle tire needed to be replaced. She had her bicycle shipped by Greyhound bus from N. Carolina to L.A. where she picked it up and was riding through Arizona by herself. When Van and I came across her she was trying to make it to Bisbee and camp out for a few days to rest up before continuing on her long journey. I asked on the radio if we had time to help her before we had to get back to the fund raiser. He said yes, we had three hours. Van took her back to Sierra Vista to get a new tire. It took 1-½ hours to get her there and back. I stayed with her bicycle and things. While I was waiting three emergency vehicles came from Bisbee. They said they got a call that I had hit her. After I explained the situation they left. Meanwhile I was getting a lot of sun while waiting. Of course there were no trees for shade so I saw a large power pole that had a three foot shade. I talked to Van to see when he was getting back. He said they were almost there. We got the bike up and working. After we knew she was safe and on her way, Van and I headed back to Chapter E s Hug-A-Bug, but we were too late. Everyone was gone so we didn t get any of those great Hot Dogs. Oh well there is always next year. Submitted by Roger Pearsall & Van Hartline Chapter G Mini Golf Outing May 15th Twelve goldwing'ers gathered the evening of May 15 to play Mini Golf at Triple Play in Green Valley. Since it was so hot, we ate first before honing our putting skills. Since Dennie Long's birthday was the next day, we surprised him with a Dairy Queen ice cream cake (what else?) & cards. The wanna be golfers took off in groups assigned by Gayle Coover. Since there were 2 four-somes & 2 three-somes, at the end, Gayle did a draw for a 4th player for the 2 threesomes to make it fair. There was a prize for the lowest TEAM score & the winners were: Galen Baird, Carol Beier, Bill Nicholls & Gayle Coover! They each won (what else?) a Dairy Queen gift certificate! The scores were: Baird, Beier, Nicholls, Gayle Coover: 208 Lauren (friend of Enid Bernard), Dick Beier, Dennie Long, Karen Long: 233 Bob Berg (friend of Gayle Coover), Enid Bernard, Anita Nicholls: 236 Dee Baird, Steve and Michelle Eddington: 253 Next time, we hope more of you will join in the fun! 9 Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 9 of 16 Region F Convention May 24th Chapter G had 14 chapter members attend the Region F convention in beautiful St. George, Utah. One group of G s that rode up together included Chuck and Kris, Steve and Michelle, and Enid. Other G s at the convention included Dee and Galen, Gene and Jeannie, Bill and Anita, Gayle and Dennie and Karen. This year, Chapter G was responsible for Registration, which was handled with a great deal of fun and enthusiasm by Chapter G members. It is always a pleasure passing out registration packets and chatting with all the different chapter members attending the convention. In addition, Chapter G also sponsored WINGO a Chapter G version of Bingo. Another fun game, JENGA, was also played. Dennie Long was the Master of Ceremonies at both games. Here s a couple of highlight pictures from the convention.
Volume VI, Issue 3 Page 10 of 16 May 26 end of June, Destination Alaska Following the Utah Regional Convention, a caravan of 3 bikes (Chuck and Kris, Steve and Michelle, and Enid) departed for destination ALASKA. South of the Canadian border, Randy joined the group. The group travelled north through Canada to Dawson Creek, Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway. Amazing and awesome sights were the order of each and every day. Weather was finicky, some days rainy and cool, some clear and sunny. Here are a couple of pictures of the wonders, up to Fairbanks. At Fairbanks, I jumped ship and flew home, deciding the weather was not my cup of tea and since Chuck and I have made several trips to Alaska, I knew my fellow bikers were in for a many more wonderful days. Chuck continued with the group (guess he doesn t mind the rain and cool). I will need for one of the other travelers to continue this travelogue in the next newsletter, along with more pictures. Teena and Ted Prentise from our own AZ District. Teena and Ted are Chapter Directors of Chapter D. Fred and Linda Fisher from Colorado District. Chapter Directors of Chapter L. Doug and Chris Pettigrew from New Mexico District. Chapter Directors of Chapter C. Congratulations to all, especially Teena and Ted! Way to go Arizona!!! Chuck Liberty, Arizona District Director GWRRA promotes Safety and Knowledge, and our Educators are well trained. GWRRA members appreciate that training. The letter below from Roger Pearsall indicates how the information taught by our Educators, such as Carl, can make a bad situation end with favorable results. To Carl Welch, On 2/23/2013 my wife and I finished taking a class that was offered through GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association). It was the Medic First Aid Class BasicPlus which included CPR, AED and First Aid for Adults. The instructor was you. It was extremely helpful to have taken this class because a little later on I was cleaning my gun and shot myself in the leg. Because of the training I quickly applied direct pressure to stop the bleeding and wrapped the gauze compress with an Ace bandage while my wife called 911. It did stop the bleeding and when the emergency team got here they asked who taught me what to do because it was not necessary to undo it to look at it I told them it was Carl Welch. They would just take me straight to the University of Arizona Trauma center. When I got to the University Arizona Trauma center they also wanted to know who taught me to prepare myself for an emergency such as this. The doctors said it looked good. Was a very bloody situation and because of my training I knew what to do. Thank you for your great instructions and for other life saving techniques. Yours truly, Roger Pearsall
