Instead of riding to a certain time we will be riding to a certain temperature (90 degrees) so come out and enjoy the fellowship of other gold wingers.

Because of Wing Ding our regular scheduled meeting was changed to Saturday, July 14 th at Logan s Roadhouse. The meeting will start at 1:00pm so come around noon for lunch.

Next week we should be in excess of 100 degrees. By leaving early on our rides we can still enjoy the hill country. Last ride we had ten motorcycles and enjoyed breakfast outdoors in Boerne. Instead of riding to a certain time we will be riding to a certain temperature (90 degrees) so come out and enjoy the fellowship of other gold wingers. This month we only have pick a place and go somewhere for breakfast rides scheduled. If you have a favorite place to go, just show up, let us know where and off we go. 2 Volume 31 Page 2 of 7 Issue 07 Last month s newsletter was skimpy because no articles were submitted. I know that a lot of people took a summer trip already and more are planned, so please share your trips with the rest of us via a short article. This will fill three purposes. 1. You will remember more about the trip and enjoy it again. 2. Your friends will be envious of you. 3. It will give others ideas of where to go themselves. For those of you who did not make our June gathering you missed a recap of the trip to South Dakota. You should be able to read about it soon and also see some pictures. We are also starting to plan for a couple of long trips next year. One will be a week trip across the south to Key West and then on to bike week in Daytona for a day before returning home. The other will be a long (three week) trip to Wing Ding in Greenville, South Carolina via New Brunswick and the east coast. If you are able to go on either of these trips please let me know so you can be included in the planning. You re out on a tour and 400+ miles are behind you. Every hour or so you have made a pit stop for gas and/or food. Now you re really getting tired. Time for a cup of coffee, right? Coffee, Coke, No-Doze and other stimulants/drugs DO NOT WORK to keep you alert when you re tired. Better, find a place to stop and take a nap. Even half an hour is sufficient to re-charge your battery enough to let you go on, if you need to. Better still, find a place to stop for the rest of the day and get a normal night s sleep. Though I have done more than 600 miles in a day, I find that I can sustain any number of days on the road so long as I don t average more than 350 per day and make plenty of stops along the way. (If you are planning a long leg on your tour I suggest you make it for the first or second day. Later than that and the odds are you will not be able to complete it safely.) Coffee and drugs are no substitute for getting some rest when you need it, and a little thoughtful planning of your itinerary will help as well. Ride Safe and Often Bruce A. The trip to New Mexico, Colorado, and South Dakota was a lot of fun. I guess we made it out of Colorado just in time because of the wild fires. I have not had time yet to go through all my pictures but will do so by the next newsletter so that you

Kathy Vallejo Newsletter Editor Rio Frio Landmark Oak by Otis McDaniel Saturday s ride to Leakey was not only fun but a learning experience! I didn t know the name of the big oak or where it was until I asked at the good folks at Frio Canyon Motorcycle stop. After just a few minutes of riding we came upon the Rio Frio Landmark Oak. A few facts from the website Famous Trees of Texas; This ancient live oak has more than a passing claim to fame. Not only is it a giant among trees, with few peers. In 1866 the Lombardy Trading Company built the Lombardy Academy (white building behind the oak) in the shadow of this landmark oak. By 1871 the Academy had 52 students and was considered the finest private school west of San Antonio. Until the school was moved to a new, two-story building across the street in 1904, the old schoolhouse, nestled behind this oak, was the social, religious, educational and political center of Rio Frio. Elections and even justice of the peace courts were held within its walls. The building and the area around the tree were also used for Christmas parties, weddings and picnics. When N. M. Patterson laid out the town of Rio Frio, the highest point on Schoolhouse Mountain to the east and this live oak were the bearing points to which the first town lot was referenced. All other lots and deed descriptions were tied to the first lot and so to this tree and the mountain. The old schoolhouse and the settlers are gone, but this ancient live oak, which has withstood centuries of drought, flood, and other natural adversities, stands as a monument to the development of the Frio Canyon and to one of the oldest irrigation projects still operating in Texas. The Rio Frio Oak is the second largest Live Oak tree in the state after the Goose Island Oak outside of Rockport, TX. The Landmark oak stands in a yard on the left side of the road, marked by a Texas historical marker.
