1 The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association May 2017 Volume 2, Issue 5 Smyrna, Tennessee Spring Fling 2017 is in our rear view mirror and we are looking ahead to other events and adventures, but the memories of five exciting days are still in our minds. Those five days started Wednesday morning with the group traveling to Pigeon Forge by motorcycle meeting in Murfreesboro, getting our pre-ride briefing and going over the route we would ride. The ride took us through McMinnville, Pikeville, Athens, Maryville, Townsend and Wear Valley to Pigeon Forge, just to mention a few of the towns we rode through. The doors opened at 10:00 am on Thursday, which was the SENIOR CHAPTER official start of Spring Fling. After picking up our DIRECTORS registration packets we spent the rest of that day cruising through the vendors and getting ready for opening ceremonies and the theme costume contest. Chapter E had two winners, Eden Brannon won 1 st place in the individual category and Mac and Eden won 1 st place in the couple s category. I m sure you will see pictures as you continue to read this newsletter. On Friday Murray Dunkin led the Chapter on a very scenic and enjoyable ride that took us from Gatlinburg to Townsend on The Little River Gorge Rd. Just outside Townsend we turned left onto The Foothills Parkway, following The Foothills Parkway for about seventeen miles. It wasn t long until we were on US 129 AKA The Dragon or Deals Gap, for motorcycle riders it doesn t need any further description. At the end of 11 miles and 318 curves we stopped at the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort for a break before riding to Fontana Dam on NC 28, another great motorcycle road. Leaving the dam we continued on NC 28 and US 19/74 to Cherokee, NC and a very good lunch at Granny s Restaurant. After lunch we rode through the business district of Cherokee to US 441, the highway that would take us across the 5048 ft. Newfound Gap and back to Pigeon Forge. The weather had been wonderful all day but that changed as we started the climb up the east side of Newfound Gap, before we reached the top we endured a thunder storm with a torrential downpour. After stopping to put on raingear, a little late, the ride down the mountain and into sunny Pigeon Forge was a good end to a very good ride in the mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Thanks for the Ride Murray!! Friday night s Talent Show was so much fun and the performances were great, our own Walter Donnell took first place in the serious category performing a song that tugged on more than a few heart strings, ask Troy Hurt about Walter s performance. I can t leave Friday without mentioning that Elvis was in the building, as a matter of fact Elvis and his backup Elvis were in the building, thanks Mac and Walter. Since Saturday was the last day of the Rally members were hurrying to get that last minute safety chrome or clothing before closing ceremonies. Closing ceremonies is the time for the presentations of awards to individuals in recognition of their service to the members of GWRRA and The Tennessee District. We are so proud of every member of Chapter E and especially proud of the Members honored with awards at Spring Fling. Ed and Mary Ann Grazier received The Audrey Batson Memorial Award 2017 Tennessee Members of the Year, Murray Dunkin was the recipient of the TN District Educator of the Year and Barbara Donnell received the award as The District Newsletter Editor for the First Quarter of Congratulations to all who received these awards. 2 Page 2 PARTICIPATION AND ATTITUDE, THE KEY TO SUCCESS As we reflect over the past months activities and the enjoyment we ve had with our many friends in the Chapter and throughout the District, let us just say that We re elated that we re not your average couch potatoes. At our age it s just a pleasure to remain active and continue to enjoy our common hobby of riding with our motorcycling (is that a word) friends. And, it s even more enjoyable as a result of the activities of our Chapter and the numerous varied events that are offered monthly in order to keep our group of participants in a cohesive circle of friends. April, like every other month, was a mixed bag of activities. What do you think the key is to the success of our Chapter? Is it the leadership, the esprit de corps, our social and meeting location, the overall program, just being a member of GWRRA, the motorcycles, or what else you might think about. Yep, all of these factors are contributors to our program, but the one ingredient that ties it all together is the desire of our participants to PARTICIPATE. We re fortunate to have leadership that plans an active program, based on the desires expressed by our participants, and structured along GWRRA guidelines. Additionally, it s great to have a meeting location that welcomes our business and does the best they can to accommodate us. But all of the planning, the best program, and everything else that goes into creating a good Chapter environment, will mean nothing, unless the participants support the planned activities and program that is developed. And, once again, we re fortunate to have a membership that does actively support our program. That s evidenced by the sheer number of participants that show up for the rides, events, other Chapter visits, and just about anything that we do. It s refreshing to know that the majority of our participants will actually participate in whatever the Chapter may be doing. Communication and planning of activities is a key ingredient that helps to make any outing or undertaking a complete success. In almost every instance, participants need only to let the Director know that they re participating and then just show up at the event meeting location. Early on in our membership in GWRRA, we were told that leadership has the task of planning and implementing a program that appeals to the majority of participants in the Chapter. The member has the responsibility of supporting the overall Chapter program, and showing up at events expecting to have a fun time and doing whatever they can to promote the enjoyment of everyone else at the event. Simply said There s no room for stinkin thinkin, or sour grapes, at any GWRRA event. Everyone should expect to have a good time, and actively promote the fun atmosphere, which is intended. Philosophical, maybe, but it s what we ve come to expect of ourselves and others. And, if we all think that way, every outing will continue to support the success of our Chapter. We ve frequently heard the request from Randy that if you have some event that you d like to participate in, to bring it to his attention. Fresh new ideas or activities have always been welcome. A big thanks to all within the Chapter who share the many responsibilities in helping with the various tasks of operating a functional program, responsive to the needs of our participants. On another note, congratulations to all of the contest winners and those recognized with special awards at the Tennessee District Convention. The PARTICIPATION that we eluded to above, was evident throughout the entire event. Chapter E participants were not only recognized throughout the event, but were also active volunteers at the many functions, i.e, registration, Leadership Training booth, Membership Enhancement Program booth and the Rider Education booth. Photos later in this publication depict some of our participation. Noteworthy, is that even with the busy schedule of the event, the Chapter found time to enjoy a great motorcycle ride to and from the event and a day ride on Friday that included our annual Tail of the Dragon ride and a visit to Fontana Dam. We enjoyed a bit of liquid sunshine at the conclusion of the day ride and on our return trip, but we have come to expect some type of moisture at this annual SPRING event. Remember, April showers, bring May flowers. So as we see it May should be a positively stunning and colorful month. Flowers should be plentiful, cause the rain was. The Chapter fund raiser event for the Wings Across Tennessee ride, is in full swing. Ticket sales are moving along quite well, and we have heard news of some nice donations from various merchants in the Murfreesboro, Smyrna and LaVergne area. Keep up the good work, it s all for the children of St Jude Children s Research Hospital and ultimately the Children of the world. Until next month.. 3 RIDING IN THE RAIN.AGAIN Wow, what a great Spring Fling for Chapter E members with all the accolades, awards and fun that was had by all. The thespians (or characters) in the chapter put on a great show and made us all proud. A high-5 to MacElvis, Walter the Crooner and Bobby Soxer Eden for their award-winning performances. I would be remiss if I didn t mention and thank the 4 wheel drivers who chauffeured us around Pigeon Forge and kept us comfortable and dry. Page 3 For those riding their motorcycles, we had a great ride from Murfreesboro to the Bear Crossing Condos and arrived safely with no problems encountered. We had wonderful weather and it was really therapeutic and a safe ride on the back roads of Tennessee. We also had a good ride in the mountains on Friday until running into the bane of motorcycling riding.rain. I was the group leader for the ride on Friday and it turned out to be a teachable moment for me when leading a group and running into a rain storm. I should have announced that we would pull off as soon as we found shelter or it quit raining. As it turned out, riders just dropped out to put on rain gear in the rain or adjust riding gear. There was no shelter in the park so I kept riding until it stopped raining and we found a safe rest area to stop and put on dry rain gear. At this point, there were just 2 of us. We lost group integrity and we had no sense of what was happening to everyone in the group. I should have been on the CB at this point letting everyone know the situation and where we were located so the group could get back together again. As it turned out, riders staggered by and either pulled in to join us or just kept on going not knowing we were there. My bad, I was greatly relieved when everyone returned safely to Pigeon Forge. For the record, Dennis did a great job at tail gunner a big thank you to him. I wanted to bring this up for someone else who leads a ride that communication is important to inform and keep informed of what is happening with the group. It is important to keep track of everyone and make sure that everyone is safe and doesn t get left behind. Rider safety is paramount and the ride leader makes decisions based on the safety of the group. That is not to say that individual riders can t do what they need to do in their own safe interest, but try to let the leader know what is going on and get back with the group again when possible. My apologies for getting preachy, but it s not easy leading a group in less than perfect situations. Fortunately for us, Randy led us back home in the rain on Sunday and we had no serious problems other than riding in the rain. You make it seem easy. Ride Safe, Ride Smart and SEE you on the next ride, Murray Murray Dunkin Chapter E Educator Chapter E Road Captain Seminar and Certification On the afternoon of April 8th, after our regular Chapter Social, Mac & Ed conducted a Rider Education Seminar for Road Captains, for twenty-two participants. We had eleven Chapter E participants and riders from Chapters A, C-2, G, H and S. Upon completion of the seminar, eleven students completed the ride evaluation and were certified as Road Captains/Co Road Captains. Congratulations to Jackie, Marty, Walter and Barbara for receiving their certifications. Randy (who also monitored one of the ride groups), Jeff, Mary Ann, Dennis and Murray took the seminar as a refresher. Participants from Chapters S and C-2, will complete the rider portion for certification at a later date. David and Karen Hill, Chapter H and Tennessee District Couple of the Year; Frank Vanderschaaf, Chapter H; Steve and Karen Thomas, Chapter A; and Jerry and Pat Hicks, Chapter G, were among those also certified. Sloan s Motorcycle and ATV Super Center provided the classroom facility for the seminar portion of the afternoon. The road course was conducted within the North Murfreesboro, Florence and Lascassas communities. This was a great way to kick off the riding season and to sharpen our skills for the ride to and from Spring Fling. All course completions (seminar and certifications) have been reported to the Tennessee Educator, so that rider education records could be properly updated. Walter and I were shocked and honored to receive the 1st Quarter Newsletter Award for our Chapter E Newsletter. Not because we didn t think we were deserving of it but because all the other chapter newsletter editors were also equally deserving! Even though the award has our name on it, Our Chapter E Newsletter is a combined effort of all our members who contribute articles and pictures. Walter and I would like to thank you for all you do and helping make it possible for us to receive this award. I ve always said there is no I in TEAM and this statement rings true for our Chapter E Family. Walter & Barbara Donnell

4 2017 Couple of the Year So...until next time Ride Safe and Stay Aware. Walter & Barbara Donnell Page 4 What an exciting time we had this month as your Couple of the Year. Chapter E came out strong to support us in our attempt to capture the Couple of the Year Plaque from Chapter Y and we SUCEEDED!!!!! We appreciate all the support we receive from each and every one of you. It makes our heart smile when we see you show up in support of us, what an awesome feeling it is! Capturing the Couple of the Year Plaque was a first for us but I m sure it won t be the last. We had so much fun at Spring Fling! I didn t realize how much fun it was to volunteer our time. Walter and I sold tickets for the Couple of the Year Basket give away, we administered the games at the Educator s Table, and we worked registration. We made so many new friends and caught up with friends we hadn t seen in awhile, all while volunteering our time. Spring Fling is such a fun event and we look forward to it every year but it was especially special this year knowing we were representing our Chapter as their Couple of the Year; what an honor. The District Team did an amazing job putting this event together and we are so appreciative of them for all their hard work. First, just a quick reminder for those who have a membership renewal date expiring in May and June to contact the National Headquarters and renew on time. The phone number is on the back of your current membership card, and in Wing World Magazine. It s easy to renew by telephone and with your personal credit card. Or, of course, you can mail it to Phoenix, if you wish. It was our honor to be appointed as the Membership Enhancement Coordinators for the Chapter at ceremonies at Spring Fling, and we ll try to do our best in assisting the Chapter wherever possible. This isn t our first rodeo as MEPC s, so we ll attempt to contribute based on past experience in this area. Aside from the mandatory monthly reporting of recruiting and membership management to the National office, through the District MEPC, some of our responsibilities are in the realm of assisting the Director in managing the Couple of the Year Program, the Chapter of the Year Program, providing information to participants on how to better enjoy the GWRRA experience, working to promote recruiting of new members, and retaining our current membership. So, from time to time, we may be discussing your membership and ideas or recommendation you may have to better the Chapter. We view our position as MEPC s to be one of assistants to the Director and assisting Chapter participants wherever we can. As mentioned at the team meeting, don t forget to be looking for, and providing, copies of your training records and certificates of completion for the Horizons Program, if you have previously completed any seminars or courses. Ride Safe, Ed & Mary Ann Grazier, Coordinators Chapter Membership Enhancement Program Tim and Carol Moore THE E MAC s How important are the Motorist Awareness Events? You Decide, we had 9 GWRRA members including TN Assistant District Director Troy Hurt, who took the day to ride down to help us with this event and to keep us in line (LOL). We talked to approximately 168 folks ranging from motorcycle riders to kids looking at the bikes, getting their pictures taken on and around them; to folks wanting to know more about the bikes and the organization. Although we were able to interact with lots of people the most important was the possible future bikers that may just get the dream to roll the back roads with the wind in their hair on some type of motorcycle. You can bet whenever they see one of us on the road they will be looking and calling their parents attention to us which could possibly save a life one day. Anyone is free to stop by and hang out with us as we do these events. We would like to thank the members who took the time out of there Sunday to attend this event including Randy Galloway, Ed Grazier, Mac McGlothlin, Walter Donnell, Murray Dunkin, David Broadway, Art Seely, Deloris Galloway, Troy Hurt and even the queen of Assistant District Director s Vicky Hurt. Ride Safe, Tim & Carol Moore

5 Ed & Mary Ann Grazier 2016 Tennessee District Members of the Year Page 5 At the 2017 Tennessee District Convention, Spring Fling, Ed and Mary Ann were awarded the Audrey Batson Memorial Award, as the Tennessee District Members of the Year. Following is an extract from the Tennessee District web site, explaining the significance and development of this recognition, as well as a listing of the annual recipients of this prestigious award, since it s inception. Barbara Donnell, Editor AUDREY BATSON MEMORIAL AWARD TENNESSEE MEMBER OF THE YEAR This article is meant to be a history of this award, how it came about and what it means. HOW THEN, DOES ONE QUALIFY FOR THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD? BY THEIR WORKS YOU SHALL KNOW THEM In the beginning... During the year of 1989 a group of Tennessee State Staff members began to explore possible ways to honor a Tennessee member, Audrey Batson. This lady s dedication to her husband s chosen avocation was well known to the Tennessee Members. Her dedication, zeal and commitment to GWRRA went far above the call to duty. In spite of a debilitating illness, her spirit was an inspiration to many and THE TENNESSEE MEMBER OF THE YEAR award was created. Audrey Batson was to be the first recipient of this annual award. This was to be presented to her in the presence of as many of the Tennessee members as possible, the Tennessee State Rally. In November 1989, Audrey succumbed to her illness. In order to honor and perpetuate her memory, the name of the award was changed to THE AUDREY BATSON MEMORIAL AWARD TENNESSEE MEMBER OF THE YEAR. A Special award was presented to her posthumously at the Tennessee State Rally in April, Her husband, Ron Batson, was honored by being the first recipient of the AUDREY BATSON MEMORIAL AWARD TENNESSEE MEMBER OF THE YEAR at the same rally. Since then 23 other Tennessee members or couples have been selected to receive this award the highest honor that can be bestowed on any Tennessee GWRRA member. THE SELECTION PROCESS: There will be only one award given in any year. The person receiving the award does not have to prove himself/herself by any type of test or oral presentation. He or she does not have to present him/her in any way after he/she has been nominated. An effort will be made to keep the nomination secret from the person/persons chosen. 8 Page 8 We have two birthdays in the month of June. Dalton McKee, June 4 Isabel Rawson, June 18 We have two anniversaries in the month of June. Janice McGlothlin Sunshine Lady Jim & Brenda Sterling, June 1 Ed & Mary Ann Grazier, June 8 Chicken Pot Pie 1 package (2 rounds; 15 ounces) refrigerated pastry rounds. 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter 1 1/2 cups chopped frozen or fresh vegetables of your choice 2 cups (about 8 ounces) shredded cooked chicken 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour Salt and ground black pepper 2 cups of chicken broth Directions: Place rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 450 degrees. Set one pastry aside. Place the other round in a 9-inch pie pan that is 2 inches deep. Crimp the edge of the pastry with a fork, then prick the bottom a few times. Bake the pastry until browned, 7 to 8 minutes. Remove the pie pan from the oven and set it aside. Reduce heat to 350 degrees. While the crust bakes, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add vegetables and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute. Add the chicken and cook, stirring for about 1 minute longer. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and chicken, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook stirring until the flour is incorporated, about 1 minute. Add the broth to the skillet, increase the heat to medium-high, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly, 1-2 minutes. Pour the chicken mixture into the baked piecrust. Cover the top with the remaining pastry round. Turn the edge of the top pastry under the crimped edge of the bottom crust with your fingertips. Press around the edge with a fork to seal the two together. Make several vents in the top pastry with a sharp knife. Bake the pie on top of a baking sheet until the crust is golden brown and the juices are bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes. If the juices are bubbling but the top has not browned, place the pot pie under the broiler until it turns golden. Let the pot pie rest for 10 minutes, then slice it and serve.
