Volume 8, Issue 8 Vermilion Parish Summer Reading Program The Vermilion Parish Library s Summer Reading Program held it s end of the summer bash and Friends of Palmetto was in attendance to hand out prizes that were donated by the Friends group. The talented coloring contest winners received free park entries to enjoy at their leisure. A Great Big Thank You! M r. Harold Frederick has graciously used his woodworking skills to help out with a park project. He made the frame for this sign that Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser requested to be put up at Palmetto. Friends of Palmetto purchased the material for this sign and Maintenance Foreman Ryan Broussard saw to it that the sign was installed. Talk about some teamwork in action! Staff at the park is very short handed at this time. It s volunteers like this that help keep our park open. A huge T HANK YOU to Mr. Fred! 2 Page 2 Palmetto Pal s Paper Volume 8 Issue 8 Hiking & Biking At Palmetto Friends of Palmetto have created a distance map for people that would like to know just how far they have hiked or biked. A full page printable map can be accessed from the Friends web sight. Hiking or biking can be a lot of fun at Palmetto. There are also geocaches located at Palmetto that can be located while hiking or biking. Finding and identifying animal tracks can be an interesting thing to do while hiking the trails. If you walk the trails quietly you might be lucky enough to come across some of the many animals that call Palmetto home. There have been a lot of people to visit the park over the summer so any help picking up stray trash along the trails while biking or hiking is greatly appreciated. Please practice the Trash In - Trash Out philosophy and help keep our park clean. La Environmental School Class Palmetto Island State Park will be the location of 2018 Louisiana Environmental School, Series V, Course III & Series V, Course IV. Course III is October 2nd & 3rd, Course IV is October 4th & 5th. The school is open to any affiliated garden club member and is open to nonmembers on a space available basis. Pre- Registration is required and there is a $60 student fee per course. There is limited student space available. Nothing like getting away from it all and getting back to nature. Making memories and relaxing is what it s all about. Making smores, shadow puppets and campfires help to pass the evenings away. There are different options for tent campers at Palmetto. If you enjoy having electricity and water, you can rent a tent pad in the camper area for $20 to $28 a night depending on what day of the week and what time of year it is. If you like to rough it and unplug, there are backcountry campsites available that you have to hike to. These primitive sights offer more privacy and are located along the park s largest pond so you can fish and get up close with the wildlife. Those spots are $9 a person. Large groups of up to 30 people can rent the group primitive sight for $35 a night. That sight is located across from the boat launch area. You can book one of these sights online at Reserve America.

Pork Breakfast Sausage 1 1/2 Tsp Lemon Juice in Milk 1 Chopped Onion 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil 1 1/4 cup Self Rising Corn Meal 1-4 oz can Chopped Green Chili Peppers 1/4 cup Self Rising Flour 3/4 Cup Cream Style Corn 2 Slightly Beaten Eggs 2 Cups grated Cheddar Cheese 1 Cup of Butter Milk 1-15oz Can drained Black Eyed Peas Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13 x 9 x 2 in. pan. Cook sausage and onions in a large skillet until sausage is brown. In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk and oil together. Combine with dry ingredients. Add sausage, onions, chili peppers, corn, cheese and peas. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50 to 55 min. If cooking in a black pot, use a 12 quart Dutch oven with 25 briquettes. 17 on top and 8 on the bottom. Cook for 45 min. to an hour or until golden brown. Friends of Palmetto Island State Park, Inc. Friends of Palmetto hopes everyone had a great summer and wish everyone a smooth transition in heading back to school this month. Just a reminder that the Splash pad will remain open until September 1. Park Hours of Operation: Gates are open 6am-9pm (Sun-Thurs) and 6am-10pm (Fri & Sat). Entrance station is open: 8am-5pm (Sun-Thur) 8am-10pm (Fri & Sat). All park sites close at 10pm on Friday, Saturday and days preceding holidays. Entrance Fees: $3 per person; Free for Seniors (62 and older) and children age 3 and under. Canoe rentals are $25 per day or $7 per hour. The Splashpad is open April-September, Tuesday Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Golf cart entry fees are $10 per day or $100 for annual pass (proof of insurance is required). Palmetto Island State Park has 96 camp sites, 6 cabins, 4 pavilions, 4 primitive backpack sites, 1 primitive group site and a meeting room to rent.
