1 Smyrna, Tennessee The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association November 2018 Volume 3, Issue 11 Chapter Officers SENIOR CHAPTER DIRECTORS About one month ago I started my newsletter article with I know everyone is looking forward to Fall season and cooler weather well, cooler weather is here, and as a matter of fact COLD weather is here. We had a good ride to Clarksville on Friday for the Veteran s Day Parade but woke up Saturday morning to finger freezing cold as we prepared to fly the flags on our motorcycles and slingshots. Thanks to Delores, Mary Ann and Nancy for giving up their seats on the cycles and riding in the Suburban so we could fly three more flags on the back of it. We were also able to display our Chapter Logo on the doors, what a sacrifice by these ladies. The parade went well, I m sure you will read more about it in this newsletter. Thanks to all who traveled to Clarksville to celebrate and thank our Veterans. Our Dinner rides have been attracting a lot of interest in the past few weeks, keep up the good work David and Nancy, the food has been great. If you have a favorite place you would like the Chapter to visit on one of our Dinner Rides just let David and Nancy Broadway know and I know they will do their best to include it in the ride schedule. If you haven t attended the dinner rides you have missed great places like Emma s in Manchester, Bell Buckle Café, Uncle Bud s Catfish in Murfreesboro and The Sunset Restaurant in Lebanon, just to mention the last four. Just in case you might have forgotten; we meet every Thursday evening at 5:45 pm at the Big Lots parking lot in Murfreesboro and leave for the dinner ride location at 6:00 pm. If that time should change for any reason we will notify you of the change at the first of the week. Come join in the fun and food, you ll be glad you did. November is rushing by and December will be here before we know it, with December comes the Smyrna Christmas Parade on the 2 nd, our Christmas Party on the 8 th and of course Christmas the 25 th. More information about the parade and party will be coming soon so pay close attention to your s. January starts a new year of activities; our New Years Day Ride, the Casino Trip and the Swap Meet at the Nashville Fairgrounds will be the some of our first activities to enjoy in Friday night November 9, 2018 we lost a great lady and a Life Member of GWRRA, Minnie Dorris. 2 Page 2 Chapter Weekly Dinner Rides Resume As was announced at the October Chapter Gathering, we have resumed the weekly Chapter Dinner Rides. The first three of these events have once again been well attended and welcome events to help maintain unity of the Chapter during the relatively slow riding season. The first of these events was to visit the Bell Buckle Café, and we packed the upper level of the restaurant, while eating everything on the menu. We also introduced some participants to the many fine desserts that the Bell Buckle Café is noted for, along with the great meals. It s impossible to walk away hungry at this establishment, which is always a crowd favorite. We missed the second dinner ride, due to a camping trip which a few of us had already planned, before the dinner rides were reenacted. This past week we made our way (all in four wheeled vehicles) to the Sunset Restaurant in Lebanon. We had a relatively large group, which initially presented some seating problems, but the wait was well worth it, when the food was served. It was another great get together and meal with friends. David and Nancy Broadway continue to do a great job at scheduling these dinner rides and only ask that each of us let them know when we find a great place that can accommodate our group for one of these events (and) that we let them know in advance so that they can advise the restaurant on how many to prepare to serve and seat at each dinner ride. In addition to our own Chapter participants at the Sunset Restaurant, we were joined by Jeff and Geraldine s daughter and grand daughter. C mon along and join us for the dinner rides when you can. We always have a good time and will surely miss you if you can t join us. 3 Page 3 The Rider Education Levels Program I know I have covered this topic before but the Rider Education Levels Program is such an important tool in the safe operation of a motorcycle. So...I thought with riding season winding down and winter being upon us it would be a good time to talk about the Rider Education Levels Program. Winter is a great time to make sure your riding levels are up-to-date and to take care of anything that needs to be done to get to the next level. So let s get started: Level 1 is Safety by Commitment meaning the rider and co-rider commits to practice and encourage riding safely, they also must submit a Rider Education Program Levels Application (N-7). Level 2 Safety by Education Referred to as Tour Rider to achieve this level you must be a GWRRA Member, current motorcycle license, be a Level 1 in the Riders Ed. Program with 5,000 safe miles, have taken a GWRRA approved Rider Course within the past 3 years or an approved GWRRA Parking Lot Practice within the last year. Co-Rider Requirements: GWRRA Member, be a Level 1 with 5,000 miles, attend a 2 up Rider Course within the past 3 years. Must submit a Rider Education Program Levels Application (N-7). Level 3 Safety by Preparedness Referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider you must have a Motorist Awareness Seminar, maintain current GWRRA Medic First Aid Class ( that includes first aid and CPR), carry a First Aid Kit on your bike, GWRRA Member, Be enrolled and current in Level 2, submit an N-7 application form. This is for both Rider and Co-Rider. Level 4 Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness Referred to as Master Tour Rider/ Co-Rider this is the most prestigious level within the Rider Ed Program and the highest level of commitment by the Rider and or Co Rider towards safe riding and preparedness. Rider/Co-Rider Requirements: be a current GWRRA Member, been a participate of level 3 for (1) full year, have ridden a minimum of 25,000 miles, be current in First Aid and CPR Certifications, and wear proper riding gear at all times, submit a completed Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider Application Form (N-9), written recommendation from the Chapter Educator. With all this being said in order to make sure your current in the Rider Education Levels Program you need to know how to access your information on the GWRRA Website. This information came from the GWRRA University How-To s Handout. 1. First go to once there hover your mouse over the Programs button. A gray colored area will drop down. Carefully move the mouse over to Rider Education. 2. Click on the Rider Education button and the screen will appear. On the left of the screen click on the blue My R.E. Information button. 3. You are now on the sign on screen. You probably do not know your sign on information so click on the I need help logging in text. This will tell you your user name is your member number and your password is the numbers in your address and your expiration date. After you read the instructions to learn what your username and password are. You may need to refer to your GWRRA membership card because that s where you ll find all the necessary information. Now your ready to log in so click on the Return to login text. 4. You are now back to the login screen. Enter your Username and Password, then click the Submit button. 5. You will now see a list of everyone that shares your membership number. To see the training record for each person click on the View button. On your training record check to make sure all your information is correct. 6. Now scroll down to the bottom of the page; after your scroll down you can see a little of your training history but when your click on All History you will be able to see the rest of it. It s a good idea to print it off to have as a handy reference and so your can enter your expiration dates on a calendar. I entered our expiration dates in the calendar on my phone, that way I can be reminded of anything that is about to expire and needs to be retaken. As always if you need help accessing your training record please contact Barbara or I and we would be glad to help you. Remember to Ride Safe and Stay Aware! Walter and Barbara Donnell Chapter E Ride Coordinators

4 Page Fall Color Ride As customary, the Chapter scheduled it s 2018 Annual Fall Color Ride in October of the year. This year the colors were far less than vivid, and not at all like the photo displayed at the right. There are only so many weekends at this time of the year, and with the other numerous activities, we had to pick a time frame, which was probably two weeks premature. As of this writing, the colors are robust, in full bloom, and the reds, yellows and golds are beautiful and everywhere. The warm weather this year has prolonged the advent of the peak color period. This year s ride took us from Murfreesboro, South to the Monteagle area, and across the mountain (through the fog), and East to dine at the Cookie Jar Restaurant. We may not have seen many colors this year, other than green, but the ride was once again a great event. As we always say, every ride is a good ride, some rides are just better than others. We experienced a delicious and filling meal at the Cookie Jar, and a number of us took advantage of carrying some goodies back home. Most were too full to order dessert after the meal, so we, in great Gold Wing fashion, just bought a full pie or cake to go. We had six bikes and three four wheeled vehicles on this year s color ride. Below are photos that were taken at the Cookie Jar, of those in attendance. 5 Page 5 Friday, November 9th, found a number of our fine participants on the road again to attend and support the Clarksville Tennessee, Chapter Q, Veteran s Day Parade. Our group departed Smyrna at (With Chapter E ) 12:15 on Friday, and enjoyed a cool, but enjoyable, ride up through Lebanon, to Castalian Springs, then to Gallatin and Springfield, culminating at our hotel in Clarksville for the evening. After our arrival and settling in at the hotel, we visited with Chapter Q, and members of other Chapters, at the evening Meet and Greet dinner hosted by Chapter Q at the Shoney s Restaurant. We passed early evening with other GWRRA members who were supporting this event, and then headed back to our hotel, where most of us retired quite early, due to our early departure the next morning in order to meet and prepare for the parade at the staging facility. It was our pleasure to carry as many of the flags as possible and to honor the military stationed at Fort Campbell, and the huge contingent of retired military living in the Clarksville area, who annually attend the parade. This year seemed to be a larger parade than usual, due to the time spent on the parade route. After the parade, we enjoyed a quick lunch at a local Wendy s Restaurant (consuming a lot of chili to warm ourselves ), along with the usual ice cream treats that we must indulge in, every time we Goldwingers eat. A leisurely ride home from Clarksville to Dickson, and then route 96 back into Murfreesboro concluded the day. It s really true, when you dress for the weather, the ride is significantly more enjoyable. For those attending, another great day together, for a truly worthy event. For those who could not attend, we missed you, and hope for you to join us again next year. Those making this years Veteran s Day Parade ride were Randy & Delores, Dennis, David & Nancy, Murray, Jeff, Mac, and Ed & Mary Ann. On the Road Again David Randy Murray Delores, Nancy & Mary Ann stay warm in a four-wheeler, throwing candy to kids along parade route Ed

7 Chapter E s Newest Master Tour Riders Page 7 At our October Chapter Gathering, Roger Crowe, the Tennessee Assistant District Educator, presented Walter and Barbara, our Chapter Ride Coordinators, with their Level Four (Master Tour Rider) appointment letters and patches. Level Four recognition is reserved for riders who fully support Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness. Requirements for this recognition come as a result of remaining current in Level III for one year, having completed both First Aid and CPR training, have 25,000 Safe Miles and be committed to riding with Proper Riding Gear at all times. A special thanks to Roger for making the early morning trip from Ooltewah, TN on this morning to make the presentation and a special congratulations to Walter and Barbara from the entire Chapter on this significant milestone in their Rider Education Program. Walter and Barbara initially joined GWRRA in March of 2007, and have traveled the country extensively on their Goldwing. Walter has served the Chapter as an Assistant Rider Educator and presently as our Ride Coordinator. Barbara is our Award Winning Newsletter Editor. They were honored as Chapter Couple of the Year for Both fully support our GWRRA motto of Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge Ride Safe, Ride Often! (Article by Ed & Mary Ann Grazier, Chapter MEPCs) Johnny and I met in 1978 in Nashville, TN when we were both 17 years old. We were both were fresh out of Barber College and were both attending a hairstyling seminar. At the seminar Johnny and I were watching all the new latest hairstyles for the year coming out and were learning new cuts for Barbers. Johnny and I watched each other from across the room for several hours. Johnny s blue eyes caught my attention, he kept smiling and glancing at me.we eventually had a chance to talk and found out we had a lot in common. We both were from Murfreesboro, TN and we both worked in Smyrna, TN. I worked at Californias Concept Barber Shop and Johnny worked on the other end of town across from Shoney s in that little strip mall. We started seeing each other for lunch everyday at the nearby Sonic in Smyrna. We quickly became best friends and fell in love with each other. We both continued seeing each other and barbering. We got married in 1979 the same year Johnny joined the US Army to become a Tanker. While in basic training he was hurt while training on a houser and injured his knee he was medically unable to continue in the Army and returned back home. We had our first child Micheal and we had 3 more children Rocky, Chris and Joseph Victory. We have 6 children all together, Johnny has two other sons Jamie Victory his first born and Dustin Victory. Johnny and I raised his youngest son Dustin together. We have several grandchildren Kateland, Johnny Micheal Jr., Dillan, Brianna, Hayden, Cheyenne, Hunter, Jordan, Brantley, Nicklaus, Blaze, Ellisiah, Zachkeri, Leya, Maranda, another grandchild on the way. Our first great grandchild is due anytime this month. As you can tell we have a big family no doubt. I hope this tells a little about Johnny and I. We love riding with our friends in the GWRRA Chapter E. We have been members of the GWRRA since 2012 and have met so many different people. We love fundraising with our GWRRA Chapter E family for our chapter charity St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. It brings us joy helping the kids and their family s in fighting for a cure for cancer. Johnny and I are also members of Rolling Thunder for a few years as well. We both feel strongly on bringing our Pow/Mia Veterans home and supporting our veterans so they are not forgotten. We would like to say Thank you to all Veterans for your service. Johnny and Brenda
