September 2017 Warioto Wings Volume 2 Issue 9 P a ge 3 A Word from your Assistant Chapter Director: Hey everyone, hope this finds you and yours doing well!! Here it is the end of August and I have very few miles on my bike this year. I am usually over 15,000 by now and trying to get my average of 20,000, it's not going to happen this year. Anyhow, I was reading the new Wing World and found the article on the Ozarks. I have been trying to get down there for a few years now an have decided to put a ride together for October. I missed out on a trip down there last year with Jim & Nan and they said it was great riding. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the gathering. Stay safe!! Dave Jones Assistant Chapter Director Ride Coordinator dbjfree@charter.net So leaving early 5 October and returning 9 October the leaves should be changing and they have a lot to do as well as great rides. I really don't care about the bike rally they talk about in Wing World but want to do some of the rides they have in that area. This area of the Ozarks has been a biker haven for many years and I'm really looking forward to the trip. The dates are very flexible I can adjust to meet other peoples schedules. Let's get a group together and go enjoy! Chapter business is going well and we a looking forward to the St Jude's ride in September our picnic in October and of course the Veteran's Day parade in November. Remember your ride coordinator needs your help planning rides. Dave Jones could use your ideas as to where to go. Also let him know how you like to ride, ie; what area, how long you like to ride, what day you like to ride, what time of day you like to ride.
September 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s V olume 2 I s s u e 9 P a ge 4 Chapter Educator Mickey Turner, Chapter Educator THE INVISIBLE MOTORCYCLIST "I never saw him. He came out of nowhere!" That's probably the most common statements heard at a collision between an automobile and a motorcyclist. They're usually made by the operator of the auto because the motorcyclist is unconscious (or worse). As riders we wonder, "How can they NOT see us? Are they just not looking?" A lack of attention on the part of the driver does explain some of the car/bike collisions; the distracted driver, cell phones, unruly children, etc. All these can contribute but some responsibility belongs to the motorcyclist as well: Motorcycles make up about 3% of the "normal" traffic flow. People "see" what they expect to see; things like cars and trucks. Unless the rider does something to visually stand out, he can be easily overlooked. Motorcycles ARE much harder to see than cars/trucks because of their smaller size. A motorcycle can easily be "lost" in the background even with the headlight on. Many motorcycles are colors that lend themselves to blending into the environment. Particularly dark colored machines (black is the color of pavement after all). Many motorcyclists wear dark colored helmets AND dark colored clothing. A number of studies in the US and abroad have shown that a light colored (white, silver, yellow) helmet is more noticeable (during daylight hours) than a dark colored (black, dark red, dark blue) helmet. Why? The driver sees this bright colored "orb" floating above the traffic (most riders heads are higher than the hoods/windshields of cars). It's DIFFERENT. Lastly (and sadly), most motorcyclists are not skilled in emergency maneuvers. Over 13% of the motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes made NO effort to avoid the collision. They didn't brake, they didn't swerve, they just rode right into the collision. That's because they don't practice maneuvering skills regularly (or ever). Motorcycling is a SKILL. It takes practice. So how can you NOT be the Invisible Motorcyclist? Position your bike so it can be seen and identified in the traffic stream. Wear bright colors Consider getting a brightly colored bike PRACTICE your emergency maneuvers Or you could take the advice from a very experienced rider. He once said not to ride like you are invisible, but ride like they can see you and are planning to do something. Mickey Turner, Chapter Educator Source: GWRRA Rider Ed Gimme 5 Articles
History of Labor Day Labor Day: What it Means Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Labor Day Legislation Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, During the year four more states Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Founder of Labor Day More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.
A Nationwide Holiday The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership the American worker.

September 2017 Warioto Wings Vo lu me 2 Issue 9 Page 13 Here are some things to remember, cut them out and put them on your refrigerator or bulletin board to help you remember. The Chapter is still looking for some new members, so if you have friends that like to ride and need someone to ride with be sure to invite them to our gatherings on the last Monday of each month. Also invite some friends to come ride with us when we have rides or dinner rides. Remember the more friends we have to ride with the more fun we will have and the better chance we will have of finding someone to ride with when we have the desire. Your news letter editor could use some pictures. These can be things you ve done with the chapter or things on your own every one loves pictures of your travels or camping trips or just day rides so please help me out. You can them to me tnchapterq@gmail.com. Watch the new year for some big changes. The staff hopes to make some changes and maybe recruit some new members The third Saturday of each month we are going to try to have a ride planned for the Chapter. This maybe a day long ride or if you want we could do an overnight ride. The main purpose is to get out and ride and enjoy each others company. Another part of this ride will be to invite the non-members to ride with us and show them how we ride and let them know a little about our chapter. So if you have friends that ride invite them to come along, it doesn't matter what they ride just that they ride safe and can enjoy a family orientated organization. Your chapter is still looking for some help. We are in need of a Dinner Ride coordinator. If you are interested in this position please let us know. One of the staff members would like to talk to you about the positions. Remember to bring your suggestions for things to do this year. Your staff would really like to plan the events you would like to attend. If you want a picnic let us know. Do you want more rides and what day and time works best for you?
September 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s Vo l ume 2 I ssue 9 Its time to start visiting other chapters Page 14 If you looked at the calendar in this news letter you can see lots of opportunities to go visit other chapters. Jan and I love to go visit and we would like to have some of the chapter come with us. So to that end I have included our tentative visitation ride schedule in the calendar. These are the dates we are going to other chapters. If anyone would like to come with us please call or text or me and let us know. That way we can set up a ride that will fit your schedule and get us to the chapters on time. If you want to visit a chapter and it is not on our list let us know and we will try to make it work. We travel by car until the weather is good enough to ride then we ride as much as we can. We will also chase the plaques as much as we can so try to plan some rides to help out with that. When we go after the Couple of the Year Plaque it only requires Jan and I and it is given by ticket draw. When we go for the Middle and West TN Plaque it is done the same way there is no minimum number of people from our chapter required and they do a ticket draw. When we go after the TN Traveling Plaque or the Region Wanderer Plaque you must have five members attending and this is given to the highest miles traveled to the Gathering. The miles used are the total miles of all the members that attend the gathering, also if you ride your Motorcycle you get double miles for that rider and co-rider. If you have any questions about the rules please go to the district web site ( and check them out. Let s Go Visiting!
