From Your Chapter Director Mike & Mary Ann Scheve Mikey s Desk Hi everyone, Mary Ann and I attended the New England Districts Convention in Rutland, Vt. this year. The weather was on the sour side with intermittent rain all weekend but it didn t seem to dampen the urge to get out and ride. That area was greatly affected by flooding caused by hurricane IRENE last year and the devastation can still be seen as you ride the back roads. GWRRAs new Director, Jere Goodman, was there and hinted that Wing Ding 35 will be something special. Again, Pennsylvania had the largest number of attendees (53), way to go PA. Next year s convention will be held in New Hampshire but a location has not yet been chosen. After many years of service to GWRRA, Ruth and Mort Smith are stepping down as Pennsylvania s Membership Enhancement Coordinators and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their excellent work. Our very own SW/ADD, Diane Heffelfinger is stepping up and taking this position and I want to say Congratulations and Best Wishes. We are looking forward to working with you. I want to thank everyone who came out for the highway clean-up in August. We had a good time and collected 10 bags of garbage. Here are some upcoming events to keep you on the road: Sept. 6 th -8 th PA District Convention, Gettysburg, PA. Sept. 14 th Monthly gathering at Hoss s Sept. 16 th Red Knights Benefit Run for the Humane Society of Somerset Sept. 22 nd Lenny s Savage River Run Sept. 22 nd Chapter W s Bug Run Sept. 29 th -30 th John Dailey s Skyline Drive Extravaganza If you need more information please give me a call: Augusts' big winners were: 50/50, Jim May $61 and Progressive, Gillie $15. LABOR DAY Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and wellbeing of our country. More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the A.F.L., was the first in suggesting a day to honor those who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold. But Peter McGuire s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J. proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The C.L.U. held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, Continued on next page

Continued from last page by Mike and Mary Ann In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the C.L.U. urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a workingmen s holiday on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, During the year four more states Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers and on June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday a street parade to exhibit to the public the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor Convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio and television The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation s strength, freedom and leadership the AMERICAN worker. So be proud of what you ve accomplished and enjoy your day. That s all for now, hope to see you soon and ride safe.

From Your Assistant Chapter Directors Joel and Sharon Shaffer You meet the nicest people on a Honda! No truer words have ever been spoken or printed for that matter. Why do I say that? Sharon and I along with Rick and Andi went for a spur of the moment ride yesterday afternoon. As we were heading back toward Somerset, we couldn t get past the Train Station in Berlin. For some strange reason, our bikes made the hard turn into the parking lot. Guess they wanted ice cream! As we were getting ready to depart for home, a gentleman walked over and started to admire our bikes. We found out that this man has a 1982 Gold Wing with over 152,000 miles on it. Rick asked him if he ever heard about GWRRA. He told us that yes did, and in fact he was a charter member of Chapter T. Well we introduced ourselves to him and we found out his name is Roger Caton and he lives in Berlin. His work schedule conflicted with being able to participate in a lot of the chapter functions and eventually he dropped his membership in GWRRA. We found out that he is retiring the end of this year and looking to get a trike. We told him about gathering nights, when and where, and invited him to stop in some time. Don t be surprised if he shows up at a gathering. Gold Wings do attract the nicest people from the public, as well as riders! The September calendar is chock full of events for you to participate in. We kick off September with All Chapters West in Warren, PA, over the Labor Day weekend. The following weekend, September 6 to 9, is the PA District Convention in Gettysburg, PA. Registration for the convention has been tremendous with over 300 full registrations confirmed. Look for a fun filled weekend in Gettysburg! There are ride opportunities in September on our chapter schedule too. September 22 there is a ride being led by Leonard and Snooks to somewhere on the Savage River. The last weekend in September, John Dailey will be leading a ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is an overnight trip. Contact John for more information about this ride. Also, Chapter W will be doing a Bug Run on September 22 nd for those of you who can t do the Savage River ride. We need to make sure Rick and Andi go to the Savage River ride so that somebody else has a chance to win the loot at the Bug Run! In closing this article, I would like to welcome Gene and Cathy Stahl home from their most awesome trip to Alaska. I look forward to hearing about it and seeing pictures. No mechanical problems and no problems with bears! What a ride!!!! Joel and Sharon Shaffer Chapter T Assistant Chapter Director

From Your Chapter Educators Gary and Susan Yoder Mr. Yoder Winding Down, Well it's already September and we are all probably wandering where did the summer go. I'm sure there have been many memorial rides and lots of pictures taken of those sights just to good to pass up. As we get older time seems to fly by so much faster and we never have time do do everything we set out to do when the riding season started. Trips we planned but just didn't get in, people we wanted to spend time with but couldn't find the time, and so on and so on. As we age in the present time there never seems to be enough time does there? We are forced to realize that unless we force ourselves to make time for important things they slip right by. I used to work for someone who never took a vacation and I wondered why would someone put so much value on money and a job that they let life go whizzing by. I have been taught at an early age that money doesn't buy happiness, happiness is enjoying the life that God has given us. With that in mind let's look at where we stand on making safety a priority when riding. True the riding season is winding down but there are still some good riding ahead of us. As we look toward the fall season remember to keep safety in mind, the leaves will soon be falling and wet roads and leaves make for a dangerous situation. As fall approaches so does the hunting season and that brings all those critters out and about and that is also something important to remember when riding. My point in all of this is that just because fall approaches and the summer season is winding down let's not let our guard down, we always need to make it a point to think safety when riding so there will be many more times that we can set back and share the memories we make when we're winding down. PA T Chapter Educator Gary Yoder

From Your Membership Enhancement Coordinators Gene and Cathy Stahl From your Membership Enhancement Coordinators, Gene and Cathy Stahl Hi All, Its been awhile, sort of lost track of time and reality. But now we need to face the real world. Having ridden thru 7 of the lower 48 states, 5 of the Canadian Provinces and most of Alaska totaling some 9948 miles. It truly was the trip of a lifetime. Got back just in time to help with the Highway cleanup on the 18th of August. We just missed the Alaska State Convention in Anchorage by a week, but still saw a lot of Wings touring the state. While making this trip with our Daughter, Son in-law and Grandson on their Harley and sidecar. With that being said I must say the Wing and the Harley both proved their reliability, being taken way beyond the call of duty. Our bikes traveled some 600 miles on shale, dirt, and mud roads on the Dalton Highway and the Top Of The World Highway, never failing us. Its good to be back with our Goldwing Family, Chapter T. Hope to see all of you at the next Chapter Gathering. Gene & Cathy P.S. Would we do it again? Ubetsha! Maybe of some interest for the members of the chapter. By Gary Clememson I have been following several posts on the gl1800 riders forum regarding the new Progressive Monotube suspension upgrade for the 1800 with great interest since my suspension was clunky. Turns out if was the result of my hitting that pot hole up on I-84 when Darlene and I were on our way to New England last year. Turns out I not only put a small dent in my front rim and blew out both front speaker grills, but I actually broke some parts off my Race-Tec gold valve suspension. Anyway, I bought the Monotubes for $239. from JC Motors in California, and a progressive spring for my rear shock and installed them both. It was an amazing transformation and the bike rides better now than it ever has. I also did the same upgrade to a friends 06 wing the following week, so I'm getting pretty good at it. If any members of our group are thinking about an upgrade and have any questions about this new product, they can call or me and I'll be happy to answer them, or help them with the upgrade if they need some wrenching help. The rear shock is intimidating to some since the fuel tank has to come out, but its really not that bad. When I did my friends 06, the 2 of us had the front wheel and forks out on the garage floor and the rear shock out in about an hr and a half. Contact info: or by gc011800@yahoo.com

Greetings Everyone! From Your Chapter Couple of the Year Chummy & Diane McKenzie This following article is written in memory of Kathy Moore who passed away in April She and her fiancée, Ed Friend, (both of Chapter T) had planned this crab feast ride for a long time and were so excited about it. Ed followed through with the arrangements, and we are so very grateful that he did. (The destination was to be at the home of their very good friends in Chestertown, MD, located on the other side of the Bay bridge.) When we (Leonard/Snooks Lottig, Gene/Cathy Stahl, JR/Mary Alice Deist, Mike Scheve, and us) arrived at the home of Margaret and J. B. Walls, they greeted us so warmly; it was as if they had known us for years. Ed's daughter, Ginger, and her family had come earlier to help prepare the food, and, needless to say, she did an excellent job. Because it had started to rain, the picnic was set up in the garage. They just scattered the newspapers over the table and poured out the crabs (approx. two bushels worth, and they were #1 crabs too). The menu also included claims, corn on the cob, steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, fancy dip, chips, drinks, desserts, etc. etc. If anyone left hungry, it definitely was his own fault. The generosity that this family showed us was unbelievable! (Added note: Dick/Arlene Duppstadt and Jim/Pat May were along with us on this trip, but for different reasons were unable to attend the meal.) Ed and John Daily came down separately because they had to work. When they stopped at a rest area along the way, they met a young couple on a motorcycle traveling to Boston. Somehow Ed and John convinced them to attend the crab feast also, which they did. Another couple, friends of Ed's, drove down from Pleasantville, PA, in their car to participate in the fun. All of them were totally amazed about the whole event, not only in the abundance of the food, but also the hospitality that was shown them. On Friday, Paulette and Danny Horten, MD Chapter L Directors, graciously rode with us for the day. When we arrived back at the motel that evening we couldn't stop talking about this family. They not only opened up their home to us, but their hearts as well. We've never experienced anything like this before; it was totally, totally awesome! Our hats go off to you, Ed Friend (and Kathy, too). There's no way you can ever top this one...you've out-done yourself this time! Again, many thanks for all your effort in making this event so successful. Until next month, take care, God bless. Your COYs, Diane and Chummy A note from Leonard and Snooks Lottig This past weekend we went on the Crab Ride to Chestertown. To say it was great does not give it justice. We laughed from the time we got up till we went to bed at night, and sometimes when you would wake up in the middle of the night and think about something that had happened that day you would have to laugh to your self. Yes we had a little rain coming home but compared to the fun, hospitality, friendship, new and old, could never be topped. The people that hosted the crab feast were the most generous, Loving and caring people you could ever meet, they opened there home and hearts to us has if we were family. And those of us that went truly embraced them with love and made part of our family ( GWRRA). Ed and (Cathy Moore) did and outstanding job with this ride. Ed said this was Cathy s idea the only sad part is Cathy couldn t be with us, but she will always be remembered for it, (thank you Cathy). And a special THANK YOU goes out to Ed s daughter Ginger and her family who went with us to help Margaret and BJ Walls, with the food it was great. I just wanted to say to say THANK YOU to everyone for a great week end of fun!!!!!!! LOVE TO ALL Leonard and Snooks
