1 Smyrna, Tennessee The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association May 2018 Volume 3, Issue 5 SENIOR CHAPTER DIRECTORS that trait. We are proud to be a part of this Chapter Family. We just returned home from the picnic at Hillenglade Ranch; a very rainy day, but a fun and informative visit. Ms. O Neil and her family are providing a great service for our Veterans, First responders and their families. I appreciate so much the Chapter E members who braved the bad weather to attend the event sponsored by Wink Rager of Chapter A to honor her late husband Bob Rager; Bob contributed so much to this cause. Vicki Hurt was telling me how much they appreciated so many of Chapter E s Members coming out in the bad weather to support this event; my response was, Your welcome, that s what they do, if they commit they show up. That s who you are and everyone respects you and your Chapter for having Speaking of showing up, Chapter E tied Chapter A for the most members preregistered for Spring Fling. Our group left Murfreesboro on Wednesday morning April 11 th riding to Pigeon Forge to attend Spring Fling. We stopped in Sparta for a late breakfast or early lunch and to wait for Walter to join us after he finished his school bus route; but as luck would have it, on this morning there was an incident that kept him there much longer than he planned. He had to make the ride alone and arrived safely in Pigeon Forge about the same time as the rest of the chapter. The ride to Spring Fling was very enjoyable, good weather and everyone arrived safe and sound. On Thursday most of our members made the ride across Newfound Gap to Cherokee, North Carolina and on to Bryson City and Deal s Gap (The Dragon). After a stop for lunch at the Deal s Gap gift shop and restaurant we rode the 11 miles and 318 curves of the Dragon s Tail and The Foothills Parkway on our way back to the rally. Except for one incident, and thankfully no one was seriously injured, it was a good group ride. We had a great time dressing up for the opening ceremonies; everyone did a super job dressing in theme (Sounds of the 60 s) costume; some appeared to be really reliving the past, so much that the Chapter won first place in the Chapter Costume Contest. Our Chapter also won first place in the Chapter Challenge Contest; if you didn t get to see that event ask the participants about the Towel Surfing part of the contest. Walter placed second in the Talent Contest, Serious Category; Walter s performance was so good, but it s hard to compete against the Flag and Patriotism. The next two days was busy with members working registration, teaching classes, selling 50/25/25 tickets, making purchases from the vendors and enjoying the entire rally. Congratulations to the District Staff for another fabulous Spring Fling and thank you Chapter E Members for your support. Hope I didn t miss anyone, if I did I apologize; I m sure you will see many pictures of the fun as you continue to read your Newsletter. I guess I would be leaving out a big part of the weekend if I didn t mention the ride home on Sunday; it could be summed up in one word WET. It rained hard and steady until we reached Dunlap and stopped at the Cookie Jar Restaurant for lunch. (Director s comments continued on page 2) Monthly Social: Shoney s Restaurant, 267 N. 2 Page 2 (directors comments continued from page 1) Getting out of the rain gear and the great food seemed to help us forget about the rain; a big piece of that Coconut Cream Pie can make you forget most any type of weather; after lunch the rain stopped and the remainder of the ride was a little cold but dry. Let s keep the ticket sales and collection of donations for our St Jude Fund Raiser going; if you need more tickets Ed will be glad to supply them. Thanks for all you do for your Chapter!! Let s get out there sell those tickets and get those donations! If you need tickets to sell see Ed Graizer. In order for our fundraiser to be a success it will take us all working as a TEAM. Our gift basket giveaway and silent auction will be on Saturday, August 11, Remember, every penny that is collected goes to the kids at St. Jude and we will deliver our check in September when we participate in the Wings Across Tennessee Ride. (Extracted from the TN District Director Article, May, 2018) Spring Fling has come and gone for this year. We had a pretty good turn out with about 592 people coming through the door. We also had a good turnout of vendors with about 27 in attendance. As we look at the numbers we see that we almost had as many visitors from out of state as we did from in state. Attendance from our state chapters was down, don t understand that but it is what it is. Alabama had 25 members register and our largest number for instate chapters preregistration was 22. We did have representation from 19 of twenty chapters at least one. We had 14 states that came and joined us at Spring Fling. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, oh almost Larry and Ann who came from Arizona to be with us. We are also looking at a ride around the state at the end of September. We have a route but have not been able to run it yet to set up gas stops, eating places, and hotel rooms. Looking to have the Operations meeting in November that is if national has the changes and new information out to us by then. More to come as we hear back from National. Gary & Patti Hamilton

8 Page 8 May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month With warmer weather, it s time to remind everyone to be on the alert and to share the road with motorcyclists. Riders have been cooped up all winter and are excited to be out on the road again, but that shouldn t stop them from using caution. Riders need to take precautions. A defensive driving course is always helpful, wearing protective gear and keeping your bike in its best working condition. Also, be aware of any road hazards and dangerous weather conditions. Both motorcyclists and motorists need to be aware of their surroundings. Checking blind spots, mirrors and using turn signals are necessary when changing lanes and when passing. We all Walter & Barbara Donnell need to eliminate distractions while driving this could mean the difference between seeing another vehicle, bicyclist, or animal; causing or being involved in an accident. Our cell phones are a huge distraction, so please don t let one text change anyone s life forever! Did you know motorcycles account for less than 5% of registered vehicles in the United States, they are traveling some 21 million miles each year. NHTSA reports that motorcyclists were more than 26 times more likely than an occupant in a car to die in a traffic crash. Now that s something to think about. According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise an average of 10% per year over the last 20 years. There are patterns found in the crash data for motorcycle accidents, motorcycle collisions are more likely with fixed objects. However, about 75% of two vehicle crashes involving motorcycles were motorcyclists colliding with vehicles in front of them. Now that s something to think about. NHTSA offers several tips for drivers on how to Share the Road with motorcycles: Chapter Ride Coordinators A motorcycle has the same rights and privileges as any other vehicle on the roadway. Allow the motorcyclist a full lane width. Although it may seem there is enough room in the traffic lane for an automobile and a motorcycle, remember the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane. Motorcycles are small and may be difficult to see. A motorcycle has a much smaller profile than a vehicle, which can make it more difficult to judge the speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle. Remember that a motorcyclist can be hidden in a vehicle s blind spot or missed in a quick look due to its smaller size. Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections. Don t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle motorcycle signals may not be self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed. Remember that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcyclists. Motorcycle riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement. Most of all, enjoy your ride and make it home again! (I used ruralsafetycenter.org and nationaldaycalendar.com for parts of this article.) 10 Page 10 David was born September 1954 in Scottsboro, AL. His family moved to Nashville in 1959 where he grew up and attended Overton High School. David joined the Air Force in 1973 at the age of 19 and was stationed in Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, LA, working in the K9 division as a security police officer. He has two sons, Scott and Mike, from his previous marriage. After the military he worked various construction jobs until he was hired on at Thompson Machinery repairing Caterpillar heavy equipment. He worked there for 8 years until hired on at the Nissan plant in Smyrna. He worked there for 15 years until hiring on at CSX Railroad in From there he transferred to Canadian Nashville Railroad until his retirement as an Engineer in February David is a huge, lifelong, Alabama football fan. His favorite things are Alabama football, guns and motorcycles. He has been riding motorcycles since the age of 15. His first bike was a 1967 Honda 160 Scrambler and has owned many various bikes throughout the years. Currently he owns two motorcycles, 2008 Honda Goldwing and 1016 Yamaha VMAX. Nancy was born January 1962 at Richards-Grabour AFB in Kansas City, MO. She lived there with her family until her dad was transferred to Selfridge AFB near Mount Clemens, MI until her dad s retirement in from there they moved to Battle Creek, MI where her mother s family was located. Nancy grew up in Battle Creek until she was 26 and moved to Nashville in She has 2 sons, Christopher and Jason, from her first marriage who have relocated back to Michigan. Nancy graduated from MTSU with a degree in Accounting and currently works at Corizon Health for the past 16 years. Nancy is a huge Disney fan but mainly Mickey Mouse and likes to go to the Disney Parks as often as possible. David and Nancy met in 1989 when they lived in the same apartment building across the hall from each other. According to David he would see her come in from work and wait until she was at the mailboxes to get her mail. Then he would accidently bump into her while he was getting his mail and start talking. After dating for over a year they were married in They both love riding motorcycles. Nancy has liked the Gold Wing for many years but David was into the sports bikes. They bought their first Gold Wing in David was visiting his friend John in Cleveland, TN when they decided to go up to Chattanooga to look at motorcycles at Southern Honda Power Sports. They had several brand new 2008 Gold Wings they were trying to sell. David called Nancy as a joke to see if she would agree to him buying one. To his surprise, and after being threatened with great bodily harm she started asking a lot of questions. We went back to the dealer the following Monday and as long as she got to pick out the color she would agree to buy it so they could do some riding together. They found out about Murfreesboro GWRRA Chapter Y when visiting Sloan s and went to the very next meeting and joined GWRRA right then. They (mostly David) have ridden through many states across the country over the last few years, mostly toward the west. David has won Chapter E s Mileage Award the last two years.
