Flying time is here! Time To Renew with MCA A new year means it s time to renew your MCA membership for There s 2 easy ways you can pay your dues: 1.) Come to a meeting and pay in person. April Meeting Next meeting - April 17th 6:30 PM Music City Aviators Monthly Meeting to be held at our field at Peeler Park. 2.) Pay online at our website. 2 Points Of Interest Vivid Aerial Makes Donation to Club z Vivid Aerial (R/C specialist in Drones and Cars) donated all of their airplane inventory to our Club. This most generous action has caused our Club Officers to think about the best way to utilize these items to benefit both our members and our club. It has been decided to use this opportunity to raise money for the future needs of MCA. Therefore this coming Sunday (March 25 th ) at 1:00pm we will put on sale at greatly reduced prices all the props, coverings, and assorted wheels. The remainder of inventory will be sold at a later date. There is just too much inventory to try to sell it all at one time. 3 Music City Aviators, March 20, 2018 Meeting Minutes Presiding: Tom Bible, President March Meeting Minutes Opening Remarks: Meeting called to order at 6:35 pm. Tom welcomed and thanked everyone for coming out to enjoy our club fellowship and fine dining at Ryan's Steakhouse on this first day of Spring, with snow flurries and near freezing air temperature outside. Everyone was glad that Tom and Dave made the good decision to postpone having our meetings outdoors at the flying field until weather conditions are more favorable. Motion made and carried to accept the club minutes report from February, Treasurers report: Hayes Graf reported our current club fund balance to be $6, Hayes stated that members have until the end of March to pay their 2018 membership dues and so far 34 members are paid up for the year. The PayPal option for renewal membership on our club web-site was mentioned along with clarification of MCA membership requirements for new members which are; Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership, Metro Park Permit and voting majority approval. It was noted that although the Metro Park Permit application form can be obtained on-line, the application, proof of AMA membership (or required liability insurance) and payment must be either sent directly via the U.S. Postal Service or delivered in person to the Metro Parks & Recreation Permit Office located at 2565 Park Plaza, Nashville, TN. Motion made and carried to accept the Treasurers Report. NEW Members: The MCA club membership application of Jason Smith was approved by unanimous vote. Jason gave testimony to his background interests in model aviation, and is now ready to expand his individual R/C flying skills and interests, particularly with war-birds. Welcome aboard Jason! Old Business: Hayes displayed the new R/C instruction signs that he and David Powell fabricated. These signs announce our new Pilot Training Program and give points of contact to interested individuals. Additional signs to update wording changes to our old signs that outline our club/ flying field policies and rules will be discussed after review next month. 4 March Meeting Minutes Cont. New Business: Approval for appropriating funds for purchasing a new gas grill, purchase of a new lock for the clubhouse door (with combination change) and possible replacement of our lawn mower was granted by majority vote. Upcoming events: The MTRCCA (Middle Tennessee R/C Clubs Association) Spring Fly-in is scheduled for the 9th of June at our Peeler Park flying field. Our club will provide the facilities and all concessions, the Cane Ridge club will provide the P.A. system and as in the past, volunteers will be needed to help out in all areas. We will plan a work day prior to the event for necessary cleaning and preparations. Tom reminded everyone that the MTRCCA needs continuing volunteer support from each area club member in order to successfully plan and implement various enjoyable events throughout the year that benefit all area R/C clubs and the surrounding communities. A MTRCCA sponsored Air Academy class, hosted by the Beechcraft Heritage Museum in Tullahoma TN. is planned for June and Tom asks that each club member consider volunteering to help out for at least one day. Tom again gave testimony as to how the kids really enjoyed building and flying Delta Dart gliders last year and related his personal satisfaction of working with the youth and helping spark their interests. More of those glider kits have been procured allowing the course of instruction of past classes to be changed from group building A.R.F. airplanes to activities more interesting to individual students. This also gives each student something tangible to take home as a remembrance of their fun and informative aviation experiences. Announcements/Discussion: Tom related how the recent Murfreesboro "Swap Meet" was an enjoyable success. All vendor tables were sold and there appeared to be an abundance of buyers present at the event. Hopefully it was a profitable event for the Middle Point R/C club? The 100th year anniversary commemoration of the final flight of Baron Manfred Von Richthofen (Germany's highest scoring WWI ace) will be held at our Peeler Park flying field the morning of April 21st. Don Clark will fly his large scale Sopwith Camel and Whitney Philbrick (of the Cane Ridge MTRCCA club) will fly his large scale Fokker DR-1 Triplane as these two experienced R/C pilots plan a memorial R/C large scale model flying tribute to "The Red Baron" and RAF Captain Arthur Roy Brown (the Canadian ace given official credit for shooting Richthofen down). 5 March Meeting Minutes Cont. It was just noted in the preparation of this report that our sister Metro R/C club (MTRCS at Cane Ridge Park) has their "Hot Dog Fly-in/Climb & Glide Contest" scheduled for the same date (21 April) beginning at approx. 10 am. Perhaps this advance notice can give Don and Whitney time to plan their tribute flight earlier in the day and let s see if Mike Connor and Jeff Roth can delay the Climb & Glide contest at Cane Ridge Park to after 12 noon (better time for thermals anyway)? I and several others would like to attend several events. In lieu of flying outdoors in inclement weather, L.A. Johnston has secured reservation of the Rec. Center at Charlie Daniels Park in Mt. Juliet on Mondays from 1-3 pm. It's an indoor basketball court area and is just the right size for micro-flyer airplanes. Only a $2 fee and a small, slow airplane are required to participate in this enjoyable activity Closing Remarks: Unfavorable weather conditions for R/C flying and outdoor cookouts have so far hampered and delayed our traditional Wednesday gatherings (commonly referred to as O.F.D.). John Forehand requests that he be given advance notice of the start of our first O.F.D cookout so that he can coordinate the Members Swap Meet Day and the flying contests. Next Meeting: Scheduled for April 17th at our Peeler Park flying field. Dinner meal will be provided for MCA members at approx. 6 pm. 6 Member Moments The upcoming season of Old Farts Wednesday's fun fly events will kick off this year when Jim Harkreader has his first of the year cookouts! As before, it will be an event that any airplane, regardless of kind of power, any power, size, weight, etc. can participate in. Due to the lack of response last year from the helicopter/quad fliers, they will have to fly a special event just for them. The prize is a free lunch at the next OFD! I'm not telling what the event is, but we have NOT flown it before! These events are planned for the first Wednesday of each month weather permitting. Also, planned for this year is a tethered balloon bust event, and a preliminary Race event to see if we can make that work. We will have Limbo, timed event, spot landing, and (yes Hark...climb and glide) but with a twist. Hope every one enjoys these events and be sure and come and give them a try even if you hate to compete. They are fun to do, no matter what the result. 7 Member Moments Above is the beautiful Piper J-3 Cub Dave Palmer built this winter from a USA Balsa kit. It is one-quarter scale with a gas engine. Dave reports it flies as good as it looks.
