1 Volume 5 Number 0251 Wednesday Serving Oregon s Northern Wild Rivers Coast Local News Online FLORAS CREEK COFFEE COMPANY The door is open! Stop by for an espresso, bring a friend, sit and chat, enjoy your coffee in beautiful downtown Langlois! DOLLAR GENERAL Dollar General continued to move toward opening this past week. With a break in the wet weather, that set them back several weeks, they were able to pave and stripe the parking lot. DOT MATTHEWS 100! PORT ORFORD RESIDENT TURNS 100 By Tobe Porter There is great cause for celebration on January 30 one of Port Orford s own, Dot Mathews, turns 100 years old. Born in Lake Country, Oregon, Dot s family came to Port Orford when she was 12. Her father, Doug Johnson, started out as auditor for the Port Orford Lumber Company. The family could have lived in a company rental, but Johnson bought a house overlooking the ocean, built by one of the Tichenor brothers. That house was where the Redfish restaurant is now. Young Dot wanted to go to college, and despite interruptions
2 by the Great Depression, marriage to Richard Mathews, raising their three sons, and a long career as a secretary, she graduated from Oregon State at age 63. Dot moved back to Port Orford in 1992 where she quickly became involved in the community. She was a member of the Sunset Garden Club, St. Christopher s Episcopal Church, the League of Women Voters, and the Port Orford Library. It was Dot, along with Librarian Bonnie Wagner and volunteer Ray Johnson who kept alive the idea of a big new library. She served on the Library District Board and the Foundation Board for many years. Those who have been treated to a Dot Mathews smile will smile with her as she celebrates 100 years with cake and visitors at Harmony Estates in Bandon. Happy Birthday Dot Mathews from a grateful community. What s new at the Port Orford Beacon? (WEDNESDAY) LANGLOIS LIBRARY London to Paris via the Channel Islands: An Interesting Langlois event by Deanna McDermott, Wednesday, January 25th, at 6 pm at the Langlois Public Library. This London to Paris travelogue promises to be an engaging evening with an emphasis on the Channel Islands. The travel included southern England, Normandy and then on to the City of Light. Sandie McDonald will provide a highlight of the program by offering samples of Potato Peel Pie using the recipe from the bestseller: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ( Shaffer & Barrows). The book is essentially about the German occupation during WWII and what the Islanders experienced and is well worth the read. In addition, the Islands trademark preserve, Black Butter, will be available for tasting. For more information, call the Langlois Public Library at COAST COMMUNITY HEALTH INVITES YOU! Please join us at a COMMUNITY MEETING in Port Orford, January 26 th, 2-5pm at Port Orford Library. Light refreshments will be served. In 2016, our team worked diligently to secure property and begin the development and design process of our new facility. We are now ready to launch our design and the programs planned with our new friends in throughout North Curry County. We will take this opportunity to share exciting details about the development of our COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER planned for later in 2017, along with our friends from the Oregon Community Foundation. North Curry County community members will be welcomed to provide feedback and offer suggestions about our proposed facility, and the services and programs to be offered. Please join us, and bring a friend to hear some exciting announcements. For more information about Coast Community Health Center, go to MOVIE SAN ANDREAS COOS BAY, OR The geology lecture series at Southwestern teams up with the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay to present a free showing of the movie San Andreas starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson as part of the Science on Screen series at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Egyptian Theatre, Coos Bay. Prior to the movie, Dr. Ron Metzger (Professor of Geology at Southwestern) will make a short presentation on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: The Science of the Movie San Andreas and Cascadia. The benefit of using the film San Andreas is that while the circumstances and scale of events in the movie are not applicable to the San Andreas Fault, aspects are more applicable to the Cascadia Subduction Zone which will directly affect the geographic region where the movie is being shown. Following the free showing of the movie, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session with Professor Metzger. The Southwestern Geology Department has been hosting a Page 2
3 lecture series for over a decade bringing in nationally recognized speakers on a variety of geology related topics For the series it has become tradition to host an earthquake and/or seismic talk around the anniversary of the last great Cascadia earthquake and tsunami: 9:00 pm on January 26, The series will be hosting Dr. John Vidale (University of Washington; Director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and Washington State Seismologist) for the 12th Annual Cascadia Anniversary Lecture on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 7:00 pm on Southwestern s Coos campus. Dr. Vidale is coming to speak at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts as an Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology/ Seismological Society of America distinguished lecturer. Hosting the movie San Andreas at the Egyptian Theatre on January at 2:00 pm will allow us to dovetail with the geology lecture series talk, making an additional scientific connection to this historic seismic event. Please join us for one or both of these free events For additional information please contact Ron Metzger at AUDUBON MEETS by Have Schubothe Joe Metzler will be the featured presenter for February's program for the Cape Arago Audubon Society. His program, "Beachcombing Kayak Island Alaska" is slated for 7 PM on Tuesday, February 7 at the Coos Bay Library. Please note that this is a Tuesday, not our regularly scheduled Wednesday evening. Our remaining spring schedule includes a Wednesday, March 8 program "Birding India: A Look At Another Culture" with Ram Papish and Dawn Harris at 7 PM at the Bandon Community Center. The Bandon Community Center will also be the location for our Wednesday, April 5 program featuring Oregon's own Noah Strycker who in 2015 broke the record of species seen around the world in one year at more than 6000 birds. Noah will be sharing his adventures in reaching this accomplishment. ROTARY CRAB FEED Port Orford Rotary s annual crab feed is almost here!
