Sunday night, there was some pretty heavy rain at times, which led to cancelation of all evacuation notices at Noon, yesterday (Monday, 9/18). Again, we can t thank the firefighters from near and far, who came to fight and protect the south coast communities of Brookings & Harbor., and isolated homes in the area. Job Well Done! EAGLE CREEK FIRE With rains helping, the fire has slowed, but issues surrounding the fire have continued to snarl east/ west traffic on 1-84, which continues to be closed east bound, but open west bound, with limited opportunities to leave the interstate. ARLINGTON To further complicate east/west travel, I-84 closed at Arlington due to a tragic accident involving a wrong-way driver (deceased), and a semi-truck full of cars (driver ok). All of which burned. I-84 was still closed Tuesday morning at 11:00 am. NEED A FUN BREAK? There are many events coming up over the next few weeks, final Saturday/Sunday markets, school sports events, and more. Here are a couple that will make a difference, so please, go enjoy these events! Rotary Club of Port Orford s Oktoberfest is coming up on September 30th here in Port Orford at the Community Building, 6 PM. It s family friendly (children don t need tickets, child portions available for purchase by the item.) Raining Cats & Dogs, Brookings-Harbor Rotary will be dropping cats and dogs from the sky also October 30th, usually around 2 pm.

2 PICKLEBALL Come play pickleball at Buffington Park. New yellow lines have been added to the existing tennis courts to allow pickleball play. If you would like to learn how to play, please join us on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:00 am (weather permitting) through September 30, Balls and paddles will be provided. For 2017, the Coastal Farm & Ranch Challenge of Champions has added three new events to their tour: Oakville, Washington; Myrtle Point, Oregon; and Canby, Oregon. The newest venues bring the event total to 17 tour stops throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The Tour makes its first stop as always starting in the town where it all began seven years ago, Roseburg, OR. The sold-out event had to turn away almost 200 fans. After the Bullride, the official after party features Border Patrol Rockin Country. Border Patrol is one of the Northwest's Hottest New Country Bands with a solid mix of southern rock and hot new country hits. This High Energy Rockin' Country group has competed in the Texaco Country Showdown and rocked several Oregon County Fairs. One thing s for sure, they are a group that keeps you on the dance floor!! Earlier on Saturday folks can enjoy strolling through the Harvest Festival in downtown Myrtle Point. Like the Cranberry Festival in Bandon, the Crab Festival in Charleston and the Blackberry Festival in Coos Bay, the Harvest Festival is another of our southern Oregon regional festivals that features the character of the local community. You can plan on sampling oysters at the Wrestling Handmade Alpaca Bears, Art Glass Jewelry, Fabulous Cards, Spirit Rattles, Pewter Ornaments, Garden Art World Wide Wire Service Phone: th St. Port Orford, OR booth, chicken at the Project Graduation Blue Trailer or feasting on a steak dinner at the Fire Station. Besides great food and fun, the Harvest Festival features one of Oregon s best car shows. The Challenge of Champions Bullriding begins after the Harvest Festival at 7 pm followed by Border Patrol so whether you are looking for an evening of solid entertainment and fun or want to make a day of it at the Harvest Festival, Myrtle Point and the Coos County Fairgrounds is the place to be. GED, ADULT BASIC EDUCATION AND ESL CLASSES Gold Beach, OR Southwestern Oregon Community College will be offering GED exam preparation, college and career preparation, and college placement test preparation for fall term in Curry County. Students can build a pipeline to enter college, training programs and jobs in high-demand career areas. English as a Second Language will be offered in Gold Beach and Brookings. Orientation is scheduled for September 25 and 26, 2017 at Southwestern s Gold Beach Center. In Port Orford, orientation is scheduled on September 26 and 28 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Driftwood School.
