1 Community Newsletter Week of March 18-22, 2019 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. Have a say in your Community! We have launched an additional survey to aid in the development of the City's new Comprehensive Plan. This is a great opportunity to give the City your input on the community you live in. To complete the survey go to 2. The Dodge City Chamber of Commerce will host a Legislative Coffee at City Hall in the City Commissioners Chambers on Saturday, March 23, from 9-10 am. For more information contact the Chamber at Dodge City Police Department Officers Moyer and Mendoza, along with Seargent Kolbeck, and Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau Tourism Coordinator, Megan Welsh, read to Soule Elementary students on Tuesday of this week as part of the schools Dr. Suess day. 4. The Dodge City Police Department conducted A.L.I.C.E. (Alert-Lockdown-Inform-Counter- Evacuate) Training, which pertains to active shooter situations, with Dodge City High School faculty and all elementary school faculty in March. 5. Effective March 18th, 2019, Officer Madeline Kolbeck was promoted to the rank of Detective and Officer Shane Harris was promoted to the rank of Corporal.
2 6. Travel Kansas, a Wichita Times Publication, has honored Boot Hill Distillery with a great article. The article, named Spirits of Boot Hill live on in distillery written by Melinda Schyder, talks about the soil to sip experience along with the history of the building at the distillery. Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau Assistant Director and Chair of the 3i SHOW, Colleen Hastings, had the honor of cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony of the 65th Annual 3i SHOW Thursday, March 21st. City Commissioners and staff, the Dodge City Community College Rodeo Team, Fort Dodge Soldier Home Veterans and several observers assisted the 3i SHOW Team during the ribbon cutting. 8. Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau Director, Jan Stevens, and Tourism Coordinator, Robin Bailey, met with Amtrak District Station Manager, Marti Soholt. Soholt wanted to thank Dodge City for hosting Amtrak passengers. CVB staff and Soholt also discussed the upcoming National Train Day on May 11, 2019, as well as the 150th anniversary of the Gold Spike Ceremony, the joining of the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States and connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, JAG was able to finish the Drainage Improvement project at the Youth Complex this week. Most of the work was completed last fall, but seeding and mulching were completed this week. 10. JAG started replacing sidewalk at the Front Street CVB location this week. Many of the original sidewalk pavers were deteriorating and needed to be replaced. Other improvements are taking place while JAG is on site. 11. With a week of good weather, Furr Landscape was able to make good progress on the Landscaping Project south of the Railroad Tracks. Railroad tie edging, sprinkler system, and tops soil has been installed in the section between 4th Ave. & 5th Ave. Work continues in other sections also. 12. Dodge City Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Jan Stevens traveled to Wichita for the Humanities Kansas (HK) Board of Directors meeting to represent Dodge City. The meeting covered regular board business as well as grant review information. Slated to speak as a panelist for the Movement of Ideas Forum: Changes in Rural Kansas during the board meeting are the Lt Governor, Executive Director of Kansas Sampler, Secretary of Kansas Department of Commerce, and Senior Program Officer of the Kauffman Foundation. 13. Parks and Facilities Forestry and Landscape staff sprayed pre-emergent in the downtown irrigated areas and parks, and Construction staff finished up putting the privacy slats in behind the zoo this week. 14. Parks and Facilities Forestry/Landscape Division staff assisted the Dodge City Raceway Park by hauling away dirt during construction of the Little DCRP dirt track. The new track is a 1/7 mile clay oval track that will host eight dates of racing. For a full schedule visit
3 15. Building Solutions was able to complete the sidewalk and driveway work on the 1500 Block of Central Ave. this week. The new waterline is nearing completion in the 1300 Block as well. Grading and sub-grade prep work are underway on the 1400 Block along with some placement of Curb & Gutter. It is anticipated that the contractor will close the 1200 Block very shortly to start demo operations and utility installations. The intersection of Oak St. and Central Ave. will remain open to help with school traffic. 16. The Community Housing Association of Dodge City had 10 volunteers last Friday and Saturday to paint the inside of the new duplex being built on Brier Street. They also cleaned up 25 bags of trash from the alley and block and cleaned up the curbs. 17. We may see more train traffic in town until the situation in Nebraska gets better.
