1 Volume 6 Number 0280 Wednesday Serving Oregon s Northern Wild Rivers Coast Local News ONLINE Sunday s I-5 Backup No Wrecks South Bound OK VIEW ECLIPSE SAFELY Protect your eyes, limit your viewing, even with glasses GOT GLASSES? Check Port Orford Library for Eclipse Glasses coincides with predicted heavy traffic reference the solar eclipse activities on Aug 21st. High Visibility DUII Enforcement during the Solar Eclipse, and Labor Day weekends. During this time Port Orford PD will be conducting extra DUII saturation patrols the week prior to, & during the week after Aug 21st, Specifically, members of the Port Orford Police Department, in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies, including the Curry County Sheriff s Office, will be dedicating extra DUII patrols. Well folks, Labor Day weekend is almost here, & this year it Participants in these overtime patrols are funded through the State SOLAR ECLIPSE & LABOR DAY ENFORCEMENT of Oregon in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These efforts will continue throughout the year at various times, especially during busy holiday weekends and during large civic events. Nationwide, DUII crashes and fatality rates are still quite grim to say the least NHTSA statistics include a figure of over 10,000 people dying as a result of alcohol-impaired crashes. That calculates out to about one fatality every 51 minutes The statistics also show a nationwide overall DUII crash cost of somewhere north of 37 billion dollars annually.
2 With your help, we re certain that we can significantly cut down on these sad statistics right here in Oregon. One final word, please plan ahead if you are going to be consuming alcohol over this Labor Day weekend. Have a designated driver built into your planned festivities. At the very least, it s guaranteed to help alleviate a potentially very expensive headache? J MUSIC IN THE PARK BANDON, OR The Greater Bandon Association is gearing up for Bandon s hot August nights. 3 Shoreline Education for Awareness, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Oregon Pelagic Tours and South Coast Tours. SHOES FOR KIDS COMMON GOOD WASHINGTON STREET, PORT ORFORD Distribution Day August 26, from 10 AM to Noon & 1 PM to 3 PM Information about the festival as well as registration details can be found at Contact Harv Schubothe at (541) for more information. ROTARY BIKE THE ROGUE GOLD BEACH, OR The spectacularly scenic 8 th Annual ROTARY BIKE THE ROGUE road bicycling event, which will take place Saturday, September 9 th, offers routes for cyclists of varying abilities, along with good weather, great food, and SAG support. Day weekend birding event, running from September 1 to 3, includes speakers, land-based field trips, a pelagic trip and a paddle trip as well. Award winning writers and photographers Noah Strycker and Paul Bannick will both be presenting. Noah Strycker is a 31-year-old writer, photographer, and bird man from Creswell, Oregon. His third book will be published in October of this year: Birding Without Borders, which accounts his 2015 quest spanning 41 countries and all seven continents as he set a world record by seeing 6,042 species of birds (more than half the birds on Earth) in one calendar year. Paul Bannick gives bird-lovers a gorgeous photographic feast and an engaging natural history lesson, while making a compelling call to preserve the habitats that sustain those most iconic of birds, Owls. In his new latest book, Owl: A Year in the Lives of North American Owls, Bannick features more than 200 images captured over several years of field work. This year s field trips will include a pelagic trip off shore, kayak paddle tours up the South Slough, landbased trips to both Bandon and the Bay Area as well as a sea watch. Oregon Pelagic Tours will host a five-hour pelagic trip on Saturday to give participants a sense of what a day-long pelagic trip is like. South Coast Tours will lead South Slough kayak paddle trips on both Saturday and Sunday The weekend kicks off with registration at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) cafeteria in Charleston. OIMB is located at Boat Basin Road. Cape Arago Audubon Society is sponsoring the Festival in partnership with OIMB, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Riders have their choice of three different rides on well-marked, low -traffic roads: 25 miles/1,100 vertical feet ($30.00); 40 miles/2,000 vertical feet ($40.00); and 100km/625 miles/4,000 vertical feet ($50.00). All three routes follow the banks of the mighty Rogue River and cross two bridges in the wild and remote southwestern corner of Oregon. Both the 40-mile and the 100-km ride finish along the Pacific Ocean, with panoramic views of beaches, sea stacks, and rugged coastline. Each rider s entrance fee includes a free ticket ($15 value) to the Gold Beach Brew Fest, which takes place the same day as BIKE THE ROGUE. The Brew Fest offers a wide selection of micro-brews from all over Oregon, and bands performing on two stages until 10:00 p.m. The Rotary Club of Gold Beach, assisted by community volunteers, provides a continental breakfast of toasted English muffins, bagels, peanut butter, cream cheese, fruit,
4 and coffee at the start of the event for all registered riders, and generous, well-stocked rest stations every 7-15 miles along the route. At the end of the ride, each cyclist is treated to a root-beer float. Bathrooms (with flush toilets, sinks, and no lines!) are available in Buffington Park at the start and finish of the event, as well as at the 11-mile point, 32-mile point, and 51-mile point. The Rotary Club of Gold Beach sponsors BIKE THE ROGUE, in collaboration with the Gold Beach Brew Fest. South Coast Bicycles in Bandon, Oregon, provides a SAG wagon stocked with spare parts and a mechanic to assist with any mechanical problems, and the City of Gold Beach donates re-useable goody bags to the event. BIKE THE ROGUE is also supported by event sponsors: Century 21 Agate Realty, and Umpqua Bank. Registration for BIKE THE ROGUE starts at 7:00 a.m. in Buffington Park. The entrance to the park is 3 blocks east of Highway 101 on Gauntlet Street in Gold Beach. Anyone preregistering with a postmark before September 1 receives $5.00 off the entry fee, per rider. Registration and waiver forms are available at the BIKE THE ROGUE website: -projects/local-projects/bike-therogue, or Google Bike the Rogue Gold Beach.
