1 Volume 7 Number 0325 Wednesday Serving Oregon s Northern Wild Rivers Coast Local News ONLINE th of July Events Inside! 4th of JULY JUBILEE It s Jubilee time! There will be several old time events returning this year! Remember the keg toss? Years ago the even was hosted by the Truculent Oyster and Peg Leg Saloon, this year TJ s will host the event, and I am sure there will be stories from the past, and a few new ones made! A NEW 4 TH OF JULY TRADITION By Tobe Porter There will be lots of activities to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee on July 4th, and one you don t want to miss is the second annual Parade of Books sale at the Port Orford Library from 8:30am to 3pm. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, this special book sale features hand picked quality books covering every possible interest. See ya there, and everywhere. Happy 4 th of July. JULY 4TH JERRY CAN RACES By Steve Roemen On July 4, at 2:00 p.m., Cape Blanco Heritage Society will hold the 17th Annual Jerry Can Races near the Port Orford Lifeboat Station Museum in the Port Orford Heads State Park. This activity reflects a tough task of the U.S. Coast Guard men who served at this rescue station from 1934 to Jerry cans are military fuel cans. Why are they called "jerry cans"? During World War II, British soldiers in North Africa noted that the Germans' fuel cans were better: They did not split when falling off a truck. The British adopted the German design and called them Jerry cans. ("Jerry" was a nickname used by the British to refer to German soldiers.) During the early days of the Lifeboat Station, the Coast Guard

They carried the fuel in five-gallon cans, one in each hand. Each can weighed 42 pounds. To honor this work, Cape Blanco Heritage Society welcomes people to its Jerry Can Races. Two-person relay teams will carry two Jerry cans -- one in each hand -- over a 50-yard course. Winners will be determined by the fastest time in each class. Classes are determined by the combined ages of the team members, in a men's division (42- pound cans) division, a women's division (20-pound cans), and a couples division. Contestants must be at least 16 years of age. The overall winners will receive two fares for 104-mile scenic trips from Jerry's Rogue Jets. Well, that s not rumor, that s going to happen! The Thrift Store team and the Board of Directors plan to turn the very successful but woefully inadequate basement store into an accessible, welcoming space on the property adjacent to the Center s parking lot. To date, over $20,000 has been raised for this $75,000 project. The Senior Center Board allocated $10,000, and Plumb, Level & Square Fund donated another $10,000 in the form of a challenge grant. In the coming weeks we will ask the community to step up and

4 meet that challenge. And great news we will be able to offer both traditional and digital ways of donating. A larger thrift store means more space for goods (including furniture) so you can shop till you drop in comfort. It also means more income that our active Senior Center can invest in our community. Scholarships for high school graduates, help with Meals on Wheels and a much larger medical equipment lending program are just a few ideas. We ll keep you posted as we move this project along. Just in case you want to be the first on your block to make a donation, please send your tax-exempt gift to Port Orford Senior Center, PO Box 726, Port Orford POLICE REPORTS OREGON STATE POLICE 6/17-13:18/ Rescue operation at Blacklock Point Trail 06/17-21:21/ Accident, Injury, Humbug Canyon approx.
