This family-friendly, culturally-diverse event was held so that members of the Police Department could interact with the community in a positive way. According to Police Chief Godfrey, It was our way to reach out and create an approachable relationship with all the negative events happening in the world today. In addition to a free barbecue lunch with chips and drinks, there was a bounce house and basketball games for the children to enjoy. The PAL kids and YDC members were on hand to help with the event. This community event was very well attended by over 100 hundred residents who enjoyed spending time together. Plans are underway to hold a future Unity in the Community event in Ormond Beach. 3 PAGE 3 Protecting Sea Turtles & Their Habitat On Friday, March 16, Becki O Keefe, Field Manager for the Volusia County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, presented a very interesting program to 24 participants at the Environmental Discovery Center. Becki discussed the biology of sea turtles with particular attention to the Loggerhead, Leatherback and Green turtle species, which are most common in Volusia County. We learned those species all nest and lay their eggs on the beach at night. Sea turtles can lay up to 100 eggs at a time, but female turtles do not always have eggs each year. Hatchlings (baby turtles) instinctively go directly to the ocean when born and must swim nonstop for 72 hours until they reach a unique area in the Atlantic Ocean called the Sargasso Sea where they continue to grow and develop. Participants learned the major risks to sea turtles and their habitat include vehicles on the beach, beach and ocean trash, lights at beachfront homes and businesses, and encounters with fishing boats. Becki explained that in order to protect turtles, vehicles are prohibited in designated beach conservation areas. Beach driving hours are restricted in non-conservation areas during nesting season which runs May 1 through October 31. Finally, Becki advised attendees on the things everyone can do to protect sea turtles including filling in holes dug in the sand and flattening sand castles when leaving the beach. Thank you Becki for a great program!
4 PAGE 4 Pasta, Pasta, Pasta! Italian Cooking Class is taking place on Tuesday, April 3, at The Casements from 5:00 pm-9:00 pm. Come out and experience a night of fun and learn how to cook authentic Italian dishes from highly skilled Chefs Ed and Nora Pankonin! The Pankonins have traveled extensively to Italy many times and wanted to create a cooking class like the ones they saw when visiting, and thus they opened their Simple & Fresh Cooking School. Ed and Nora have been cooking for many years and have generations of secret Italian family recipes that they are sharing through their classes. Ed has also published a cookbook: Simple & Fresh - A Century of Traditional Italian Recipes which talks about his family and life in America and contains the recipes his family brought to this country in the late 1800 s. On April 3, they will be featuring their Pasta, Pasta, Pasta Class! Each student will learn hands-on how to make fresh artisan pappardelle pasta on the table and then they will then make a marinara sauce for dressing. Students will also use russet potatoes to make gnocchi by hand and learn a delectable butter sage sauce for topping. While cooking their meals, students will also be able to hear cooking tips and secrets from the Pankonins. After their dishes are complete, students will then be able to taste their creations, and head home with the knowledge of the new recipes they made. Classes are $79 per person. The classes take place in The Casements kitchen on Tuesday nights. If you re interested in learning more or would like to reserve a spot please contact: or or visit their website: simpleandfresh.net.
5 PAGE 5 Cherry Laurel Garden Club On Wednesday March 14, the Cherry Laurel Garden Club of Ormond Beach met at the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) for a regular club meeting. Following the meeting, EDC Volunteer and Master Naturalist Joan Tague conducted a tour of the EDC and its grounds for the group. Joan highlighted the nature displays and provided information and fun facts about the wildlife and plant species at the EDC. After the tour, many in the group went to Community Garden #1 on Hammock Lane where Gardener Louise Bosworth gave them a tour of the garden. PARKS The Parks staff has been hard at work at Andy Romano Beachfront Park fixing loose handrails at the bottom of the stairs, installing door stops at the office and repairing cracks on the tables. At Cassen Park, staff put plywood pieces up on the railing to close gaps. A vegetation pile was removed at Ormond Shores Park. A broken dome trash can lid was replaced at Central Park I. Four broken boards were replaced at Ormond Memorial Gardens. As usual, citywide safety inspections were performed of all parks and equipment and weekly inspections were done of parks facilities for reservations. All park reservations were posted at various facilities.
