2 PORTER DRIVE OPEN HOUSE: It seems by all accounts (aside from the downpour outside) our recent Open House was a smashing success. We received many visitors from main campus to include the University Provost, John Etchemendy. If you happened to take any open house photos that you d like considered for the Porter website please forward them along. 3 SUNDIAL MAINTENANCE: We will be performing monthly maintenance on the SunDial server this weekend. The maintenance being performed will take approximately 15 hours to complete. As a result, SunDial will be unavailable for your use from Saturday, February 28th at 7:00pm until Sunday, March 1st at 10:00am. 4 TASTING EVENT: Sous kitchen will be onsite hosting a tasting of one of their dinner offerings. Come hear about their service, try a sample of their food and buy lunch for your whole department at the Good Earth (optional!..:0) What is Sous Kitchen? When: THURSDAY March 19th 11:30 1:00 Location: Main cafeteria Crazy work schedules combined with family commitments and commutes make finding time for dinner a challenge. You don't have to resort to fast food or dinner out of a can anymore. Sous Kitchen now delivers meals twice a week to the office for you to take home and enjoy with your family and friends. With Sous Kitchen, simply cook and eat delicious food in your own kitchen without all the prep work! You will have a wide variety of delicious and easy to cook meals waiting for you when you get home from a hard day's work. A new menu full of delicious gourmet meals, side dishes and desserts are available every month. Our meals come in two sizes: large, which feeds 4 to 6 people and medium, which feeds 2 to 3 people. 5 PORTER ACCESS REMINDER: Porter Drive is accessible for all Porter employees, Porter Contractors as well as specially upgraded main campus employees. Encourage those you may or may not recognize loitering outside a door to utilize the main entrance so that we are able to account for visitors to Porter. The main lobby is open from 7:30am 5:30pm, Monday Friday. Any questions about Access at Porter may be directed to Jamesr2@stanford.edu or drop by my desk (just off the main lobby). CONTINUING STUDIES: Unfortunately due to low enrollment with previous classes we will not be offering continuing studies courses at Porter drive during the 2009 spring quarter. However continuing studies courses are being offered on main campus and for those that are interested registration is now open. 7 NOTABLE PONDERABLE: The Star Thrower Loren Eiseley Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. you are doing?" He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean." "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die." Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!" At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one!"
