This rich patchwork of ecosystems rages from 300 feet to early 20,000 feet above sea level, harborig a biological treasure chest of more tha 1,100 bird, 300 mammal ad 12,000 plat species. This ladscape is also a stroghold for populatios of edagered Adea codor, jaguar, titi mokey, white-lipped peccary, vicuña, Adea bear, military macaw ad giat otter. The 42,500 square mile ladscape spas the borders of orther Bolivia ad souther Peru. Five protected areas, vast idigeous peoples territories, ad importat archaeological sites are sprikled across a eormous ad largely uexplored wilderess. Six Amazoia idigeous groups (Araoa, Ese Eja, Leco, Mosete, Takaa ad T simae) cotiue to live i their acestral lads here, ad traditioal Quechua ad Aymara commuities are foud i remote highlad areas. The atural productivity ad biodiversity of the Madidi-Tambopata Ladscape has drive historic booms ad catastrophic busts i the export of rubber, quiie, aimal skis ad timber. Timber extractio remais a importat source of employmet i the regio today, though itact Madidi forests also have great value as carbo siks ad i protectig regioal water supplies. With the advet of tourism i the late 1980s, Madidi has become oe of the most popular tourist destiatios i the coutry. This spectacular ladscape faces severe threats from major ifrastructure developmet associated with highway costructio ad the expasio of gas, oil ad hydropower projects, as well as illegal timber extractio, miig, a expadig agricultural frotier ad harmful agricultural practices. WCS has the kowledge, log term commitmet ad etwork of public ad private parters to esure that this valuable ad spectacular ladscape is coserved. Our 10-year visio is that the Greater Madidi-Tambopata Ladscape s rich biological ad cultural diversity, its mosaic of forests ad savaas, ad its icoic species thrive from the high Ades to the Amazo lowlads through the active stewardship of the regio s local commuities ad govermet authorities. Despite a soud body of atioal laws ad regulatios, illegal timber extractio cotiues to spread uabated. Natioal policy is to decetralize decisio-makig, ad resposibility for lad plaig ad atural resource maagemet is icreasigly shiftig to local ad regioal govermets. However, the decetralizatio process is occurrig without sufficiet persoel, staff traiig, ad operatioal fuds for these govermets to play that challegig but vital role effectively.
