1 Port Ludlow Yacht Club April 2018 JIB SHEET A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for - John A Sheed Commodore s Column by Neal McQuarrie I want to thank everyone who attended our Business Meeting and Officers Open House on March 10th. We had a great turnout and continued our festivities at the Wreck Room. I also want to thank all the Board Members who shared their position description, and ideas for I am sure John Simpson will be writing about our Wake-Up Cruise that is coming up this month, but I want to mention the Commodore Cruise from May 15th to the 23rd. This cruise will be going south with stops at Port Orchard, Tacoma, Olympia, Jarrell s Cove, and Gig Harbor. Look for your registration package to come out Mid-April. We have an aggressive goal of adding 15 new members for With that in mind, I am asking all members to be on the lookout for new people coming into our community. You can see the housing market is as strong as its been in years, and we have more people moving here. I am sure that Rand Lien will be telling you about the new Port Ludlow Web Site he is developing, with help and support from Dan Land. We will keep you informed of the positive changes that will be coming our way. After reviewing many of the yacht club web sites in the Pacific Northwest, ours will be head and shoulders above the rest. The board, along with Peggy Kulm are developing ideas on how we want it to function. This is truly a gift to the club. The cost of doing this with a web developer would be in the tens of thousands of dollars. This new site will contribute to our goal of adding new members and is part of our 2018 Strategy. 2 Vice Commodore s Column by Billie Land Are you ready for Spring? The Wreck Room is, thanks to our members who participated in Spring Cleaning Day on Wednesday, March 21. There were 30 members who did an awesome job cleaning and organizing our club. I was amazed how many members showed up and how everyone worked so hard. I am proud to be a part of the Port Ludlow Yacht Club. After the cleaning was finished, we had our first spring Bar-B-Q on the deck to celebrate how wonderful the club looks. A special thanks to our early bird cleaners and organizers who carried out preliminary tasks before the scheduled Cleaning Day event: Mike Stelte, Chris Hashagen, Phil Franzel, John Neesz, David Howe, Derald Munce, and Daniel Land. Thank you everyone for putting such great effort into making our club the incredible place it is. Your help is greatly appreciated. I hope everyone is having an easy time making Wreck Room reservations. Thank you to Lori Longo and Fred Dahlem our Schedulers for organizing this procedure. Thank you to Debbie Svik the March Coordinator. She has organized some great events. Polly Peters is our April Coordinator, she has some wonderful events planned this coming month. If you can help her with any of these activities, please contact Polly. I m looking forward to enjoying what is coming up in April. 3 Rear Commodore s Column by John Morris Wow April already! Cruise season upon us and the excitement of coming out of hibernation. Down to the docks, and so many are cleaning and preparing their boats. As I walk the docks and talked to people, our members and others, you can hear the adrenaline in their voices. We all can't wait to cast off our dock lines and set course for adventure. Peggy Kulm put out the sign up for the wake-up cruise. The Lola B hesitated only a few days and managed to squeak in just before it was full. A statement to the enthusiasm here in PLYC. My intuitive wife, Lois, convinced me to take the position of Rear Commodore. I was very apprehensive. As soon as I started truly assuming my responsibilities, I said to her "what the hell did you get me into". She said "relax you will do fine". Well, reality is we will do fine. We are newbie's; rookies if you may. However, the availability of advice and reassurances from our predecessors is very comforting. As you read this, Training Day is only a few days away. I am excited about the program and have been amazed at how many presenters would like to see the entire program. So, back to the adrenaline: Last season the Lola B set out for points North, "Broughtons or Bust". A few setbacks were encountered, which only made the quest more determined for us. An insert here is that Lois owned her own travel agency, The Travel Source Ltd., for fifteen years, so we have been fortunate to have seen many parts of the world. Yet personally experiencing the planning, adaptations, and preparations as you go, tend to awaken many effects in life and relationships. The sightings of wildlife, both marine and on land, are numerous. You can book a trip to anywhere with everything taken care of, yet cruising adventures are intimate and about you, your mate, your boat. These add up to experiences only a few in (even the boating community) will ever be able to look back on. As most of you know, we are returning to the Broughtons again this season. We proposed a PLYC Rendezvous June 30 and July 1 in Echo Bay and July 3 and 4 in Sullivan Bay. At this time, we have eight boats signed up, seven from PLYC and one from PTYC. If you are an adrenaline junky or seeking a new experience, plan to join us in the Broughtons. It is truly the cruise of a lifetime, and we would love to have you there! Photos Needed We need more photos of our club activities! Please take more photos at club events and send them with a brief description as soon as you take them to Communications Officer Rand Lien, at JibSheet@plyc.us Please don t shrink your photos. Send the original file from your camera, it enables us to make the best image possible. 3

4 Highlights from the March 7, Board Meeting by Gary Hicks A second reading was conducted for the following new member applicants, and they were approved as membership #875 by the Board: Ed & Carrie Arndt (sponsors: Anne Burrell-Smith and Neal McQuarrie) The 2018 dues renewal statistics for membership as of 3/6/18 are: Renewals 115 Unpaid 3 Honorary 3 Leave of Absence 0 Resignations 10 The new 2018 Member Directories were mailed to members by the printer on 2/22/18. The Treasurer reported Club assets of $301, A volunteer to fill the Social Director position is needed. Preparations for Officers Open House, Cleanup Day, Training Day, and Opening Day continue. Work by the Emergency Planning committee continues. Committee work to modernize the Club's website technology will start in March. Ship s Store Anita-Louise Cressy Property Officer Have a blessed Easter! Buy anything with any shade of blue and get 20% savings in April. 4

5 Fleet Captain by John Simpson The 2018 cruising season continues to edge closer. The few beautiful, even warm, days of late encourage my anticipation that time on the water is now not far away, and the increasing number of PLYC members on the docks seems to confirm this. Molly, Katherine and I are anticipating another memorable season aboard Amiable. The Wake Up Cruise, the first of the season, is now fully subscribed with 19 boats signed up, and a waiting list of several more. This cruise travels south down the Hood Canal for two nights at Alderbrook, with stops on the way to and from there at Pleasant Harbor. Alderbrook is a beautiful and full-service resort located near the town of Union, just past the Great Bend as the Hood Canal turns eastward near its ending. The local oysters are served by the Resort s staff literally right on the dock, and I and many other cruisers look forward to this each year. Katherine, though, does not! And Pleasant Harbor is a little gem of a marina, tucked into a scenic, sheltered inlet just below Dabob Bay on the west side of the Hood Canal. Both marinas, by the way, are easily accessible by car, and land cruisers are encouraged to join us boaters. The remainder of the cruise calendar for 2018 is filling up with PLYC members volunteering as Cruise Directors, and we now have the leaders for cruises in May, July, October, and December. As of the end of March, we still lack Cruise Directors for June and for September, both excellent months for boating hereabouts. Once again, let me ask that if you might be interested in participating in a club cruise during either month, then please volunteer to provide us the leadership that allows these trips to go forward. The PLYC also now has a meeting scheduled in early April for a group sign-up for the I-68 Program. The I-68 is a permit assigned by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol that greatly facilitates returning to the U.S. from Canada on pleasure craft, allowing I-68 holders to report their arrival with a telephone call rather than making a required stop at one of the CBP stations. We have used this for several years on Amiable s returns from Canada, and we recommend it with enthusiasm to any of you who might be traveling by boat into Canada. 5

7 New PLYC Website Monthly Update by Rand Lien The Board approved my proposal to replace the current PLYC.us website with a new website In our February 7th meeting. Why are we building a new website? The current website was originally developed approximately 10 years ago. The application that we have used to maintain the site has now been discontinued. The site has served us well, but it s very difficult to maintain now, and lacks technologies that could be beneficial. The new cloud-based system that will host our new website adds stability today and for the future, makes it easy to manage and maintain the website, and adds expanded user and club operational benefits. The new website will engage more with members. It will allow you to make your reservations for the Wreck Room or any events online. It will also allow you to register for our cruises online. A new Members Only section will let your update your contact or boat information easily. It will also allow you to download any club photos, and even share information with club members on a members-only bulletin board. The new site will have larger, more engaging visuals and will have content designed for the specific tasks people come to our website to achieve. One of those tasks is prospective members checking out our club. We want their visit to be welcoming and want to show them how great it is to be a club member. We also want them to be able to easily submit an application for membership online. Building a new website is a big project. We are trying to complete this project within my $1,000 Communications Officer budget. Our volunteer team will be working hard to get this done, so if we reach out for your help with photos or content, please consider assisting us. The Website Development Committee members are: Neal McQuarrie, Billie Land, Anne Burrell-Smith, Gary Hicks, John Simpson, Doug Svik, Rand Lien, Daniel Land, and Peggy Kulm. While Dan Land and I will be doing the majority of the website development, the other members of the committee will be giving guidance in their particular areas of expertise, as well as helping us find or create content. On March 13th, the Website Development Committee met for three hours in a discovery meeting designed to outline the requirements of the new website. A summary document of that meeting is being circulated for review now. When that document is approved, we will share it with members through a link in this article. The new website is scheduled to launch in September this year, with expanded functionality added in November. Please watch for this article every month in the Jib Sheet to find the latest information on the new website. 7
