Port Ludlow Yacht Club June 2018 JIB SHEET A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for - John A Sheed Commodore s Column by Neal McQuarrie Rest in Peace Judy Newell, you will be missed. The last 3 weeks has been extremely busy for us. Getting prepared for Opening Day in Seattle, PLYC Opening Day, and the 2018 Commodore Cruise. We can now catch our breath. One of the many perks of being your Commodore is the invitation to the Seattle Yacht Club Opening Day. It is a once in a lifetime experience, and we enjoyed every minute of the day. The day starts at 0715 for breakfast with all the visiting Commodores. My guess is there we around 70 Commodores. The ceremony was in perfect weather. They raise the flags of the US, and Canada, along with all the visiting YC Burgees. We are then assigned a Yacht for boarding and proceed to the mooring areas along the race route. There are 2 hours of crew racing, then the boat parade starts at You see every type of water craft, including commercial vessels, power yachts, sail boats, and my favorite was steam powered boats. What a site! I am sure later in the Jib Sheet there will be stories about our Opening Day. I just want to give a BIG thanks to Doug Svik for the excellent job he did and our Fleet Captain John Simpson for a flawless boat parade. Also, thanks to all the volunteers who helped with Wreck Room. We have returned to Port Ludlow after our successful Commodores Cruise to the South Sound. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed everyone s company. We had smooth seas, as you can see Hishka playing in the water. Coming Events! 2 PLYC Officers Commodore Neal McQuarrie Vice Commodore Billie Land Send Send Vice Commodore s Column by Billie Land Thank you, Kat Boggs, for being our May Wreck Room Coordinator. She did an awesome job. I m constantly amazed at all the wonderful Wreck Room events occurring at our club; it s the best show in town. Please let Kat and her helpers know how much we appreciate them and all their efforts this last month. Jamie Bima and Kathleen Taylor will be our cocoordinators for June. I can hardly wait to see what they come up with for the month. Opening Day for the Port Ludlow Yacht Club was Saturday, May 12. Doug and Debbie Svik did a fantastic job with the festivities. They not only organized the Opening Day ceremonies but also the christenings of the boats and the BBQ at the Wreck room. Thank you, Doug and Debbie, for the beautiful blue champagne glasses for the christenings. John Simpson also did a great job at coordinating the boat parade. We are very proud and appreciative of how smoothly everything went. It was a lot of fun to be out there with our friends. As a side note, Serenity, our 47 Grand Banks was christened. It was bitter sweet as we have just finalized the sale of our 43 Taswell cutter Dark Star sailing vessel. We ve had so many great memories with her and have now moved onto a power boat. For us this is a momentous event. We still have a 17 sailing dory Ripple that Dan made in our basement to remind us that we are still sailors. I believe it s all good and we are very fortunate to be living life here in this wonderland. 3 Rear Commodore s Column by John Morris Hard to believe it is already June. So far the club has had a number successful events. Training Day, Wake-up Cruise, Opening Day, and Commodore's Cruise all drawing large numbers of attendees. The Broughton Rendezvous has ten boats signed up. Things are shaping up to be a great year for Port Ludlow Yacht Club. There will be a Marine Exchange on June 16 which I believe everyone will enjoy and want to attend. Shelly Randall from Port Townsend will be presenting the Marine Exchange on The Felicity Ann and her record breaking sailor Ann Davison. Ann Davison sailed the Felicity Ann solo transatlantic in becoming the first women to do so. The Felicity Ann was recently restored by the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and launched May 1 reentering the water for the first time in decades. Not only will we have the presentation by Shelly Randall, but the Felicity Ann will be here at the docks in Port Ludlow the evening of June 15 and all day June 16 welcoming visitors. We are fortunate to be the first stop on her "Victory Lap" voyage of Puget Sound. I hope everyone will stop by and experience this jewel of sailing history. Lois and I regret that we will miss this event as by June 16 we plan to be nearing the Broughtons; yet I assure you that we will track her down in Puget Sound in August upon our return. We are looking forward to meeting our fellow Port Ludlow Yacht Club members at the Broughton Rendezvous June 30 Through July 4. We know this will be a cruise we will talk about for a long time to come. We will see you in August and until then fair winds and following seas. Highlights from the April 4 Board Meeting by Gary Hicks Preparations for Opening Day continues. Several Inquiries regarding yacht club membership occurred in April and have been followed up by Club officers. The Treasurer reported Club assets of $300, The semi-annual financial audit is scheduled for May. The Wreck Room stage room door needs to be replaced. It is a custom size and someone may need to be hired to do the work. Action for disposal of the heaters on the Wreck Room deck has started. Investigation for a Bar Area Remodel project continues. A volunteer is still needed for the second half of 2018 to perform the Wreck Room Volunteer Coordinator / Scheduler function. Training Day Report: 67 attendees, event revenue of $1591. Marine exchanges are being planned for May and June. The Nomination of Officers process for 2019 continues. Committee work to modernize the Club's website technology continues. A review meeting is scheduled for 5/10/18. Options for the Club identity have been developed. 3

The process of inventory of the Ships Store has been refined by the Property Officer and Treasurer to more accurately track physical inventory and income/expenses. Review of Club Directors and Officers insurance by the Legal Officer has started before annual policy renewal. Fleet Captain by John Simpson We are now completing the first long cruise of the season, the Commodore s Cruise to the South Sound. We have stopped at Port Orchard, Dock St. in Tacoma, Olympia, Jarrell Cove, and Gig Harbor before returning home to Port Ludlow. The cruise has had spectacular weather, and, except for a spring tide s current in our faces as we travelled south through the Tacoma Narrows, perfect cruising conditions. This has been a superb trip for the dozen or so of us who participated. The next Club cruise is now scheduled for July. As of yet, we do not have volunteers to act as cruise directors for June, so there will not be a cruise for next month. We do have cruises scheduled for October and December, yet as is the case for June, we do not have cruise directors for September. Once again, if there is interest in organizing a cruise in either June or September, please contact me for information and assistance in doing this. On May 12, the PLYC sponsored our Opening Day celebration, with christening of five new boats for Club members, and a boat parade of 15 members yachts passing in review by Commodore McQuarrie around the Port Ludlow Bay. This was followed by a very well-attended barbecue at the Wreck Room, and I think everyone there had as good a time as Katherine and I did. Thanks to all who participated in organizing the ceremony, the parade, and the party. New PLYC Website Monthly Update by Rand Lien The Website Development Committee met on May 10th. We reviewed early working pages of the new website on the new platform. Everyone was especially excited on how the website automatically reformatted itself on smaller screens like tablets and phones. We reviewed early working examples of the new technologies for member updates of their contact and boat and data, online reservations for the Wreck Room and cruises, and the new calendar and event capabilities. We also reviewed preliminary options for a new PLYC identity as part of this new website development project. The next steps will finalize the new site map, expand the working page templates, further development of the new technologies, and preliminary development of the member s only portal. Design options for a new PLYC identity will continue. We will share the new site map and the first looks at the website design in the next Jib Sheet. The new website is scheduled to launch in September this year. Please watch for this article every month in the Jib Sheet to find the latest information on the new website. PLYC Website Development Committee members are: Neal McQuarrie, Billie Land, Anne Burrell- Smith, Gary Hicks, John Simpson, Doug Svik, Rand Lien, Daniel Land, and Peggy Kulm. 4

Women s Group s Seattle Adventure! by Liz Healy This year s Women s Group Spring Lunch & Museum Day was a huge hit with everyone thanks to careful planning by Jeanne Joseph, Meriann McQuarrie, Peggy Kulm, Deanne Pedersen, and me. Our group met at the Wreck Room parking lot where Jeanne had grouped us in carpools for the drive to the Bainbridge ferry terminal. Thanks to very little traffic and lots of parking, we had no problem making the 1025 to get to Steelhead Diner in Pike Place Market by The Diner was ready for us with great service and outstanding food served family style with three entrees which won rave reviews from the group. Pecan pie with Chantilly crème topped off this great lunch and fueled us for the five-block walk to the monorail station at Westlake. A number of us hadn t used the monorail before, so that was a fun and quick way to get from downtown to Seattle Center. The museum is a very short walk from the monorail station. Thanks to Meriann, our museum tickets were purchased ahead of time and we waltzed right in to this world-class museum devoted to the great Dale Chihuly, an international treasure working in multi-media, not just glass. Some of us had been here several times, but for others this was a first. I m happy to say everyone was gobsmacked at the brilliance of the exhibits. We were lucky with the weather so touring the gardens and glass installations outside was a real treat. After enjoying all this beauty, we worked our way back to the ferry for the trip home. The group in my carpool took a detour through Pike Place Market to buy several magnificent floral bouquets. This was a marvelous, fun day with everyone enjoying the company, and the terrific lunch and museum events. Thanks again to all of you for making this day so delightful. And a big thanks to my co-coordinators Jeanne and Meriann, and to Deanne for volunteering to handle registration. Well done! 6

Capital Yacht Club in Washington, D.C. by Diane Neesz John and I were in Washington, DC and were walking by the beautiful Capital Yacht Club when Scott Berg saw us. He opened the door and invited us in. We might have mentioned we were in the Port Ludlow Yacht Club. He has sailed all over the world, so he recognized the name. He went to their listing of burgees and saw that they did not have one from PLYC. He gave us a tour of the building, taking us onto the deck for the view and gave us the history of this new area and their facility. He gave us a burgee and a form to fill out and return with our burgee. The offices and laundry facilities were on the lower level, the social room and bar were upstairs. There were brass plates on their bar stools and chairs with people's names on them, some labeled based upon their liquor consumption. It was one of the nicest yacht clubs that we have visited, and we have visited many. The size of the building and the architecture would be a great model for a future site for PLYC. 9

State and wildlife managers are asking anglers and boaters to avoid an area along the west side of San Juan Island, where killer whales frequently forage and socialize. This action is needed to provide the whales with a quiet area to feed. Click for Full Article 17
