1 Happenings Seattle Boat Show January 26 February 3 February Board Meeting Wednesday February 7 February General Membership Meetng AT THE GALLEY Wednesday, February 21 february 2018 COMMODORE S CORNER Hello, LIYC Members, Thank you to those who attended our January 17th potluck and presentation at the Islander a smaller, but quiet and fun evening it was. Even with fewer folks, it was amazing that we had such wonderful food and an even amount of salads, mains and desserts. Thank you, Juli North, for the table decorations (paperwhites) and chocolates. The winner of the January 50/50 raffle was Jeff Daggett. Commodore Bob Hall Vice Commodore Mike North Rear Commodore Rob McNeil Secretary, Dee Dee Lozier Treasurer, Edwin Termulo Trustees Paul Henriksen Lane Langford Membership Chair Gayl Beller Web Wench Judy Welker Reciprocal Chair Dave Welker Sailing Chair Russ Johnson Newsline Editor Shanley Lett Our Vice Commodore Mike North discussed the 2018 North Cruise and received input from those in attendance. This year s cruise begins on July 27th with details to be decided in the months to come by those participating. We hope you will join us for one or more days of the cruise. The Islander will be closed during most of February, so the Galley will have a catered dinner for us on February 21st. You should have received the menu choices via (and you can also find them in this newsletter on page 2). Please send a check by February 12th. Our presenter will be Richard Fagen. Our Lopez Island weather has been drippy, windy and chilly. A pleasant change from boating in this weather (well except for the Boat Show) might be skiing at Mt. Baker, Stevens Pass or Leavenworth. Or, maybe cozy up by the fire to watch this year s Winter Olympics starting on February 8? See you around the docks or maybe on the snow. Commodore, Bob Hall

3 TowBoatUS Friday Harbor Takes Top Towing Service Award Friday Harbor, January 22, 2018 A local small business that helps boaters get safely home was recognized for its professionalism at the BoatUS Towing Services Annual Conference recently held in Jupiter, Florida. Tow-er of the Year honors went to TowBoatUS Friday Harbor owned and operated by Captain Deb Fritz. The company s red towing response vessels are a familiar sight to San Juan Island boaters, helping them get back home safely when their boats break down, run aground, run out of fuel, or need a battery jump start. Captain Fritz s company was acknowledged for its near-perfect 24-hour towing dispatch operation, superior customer service and satisfaction, towing case management, and its work in the local boating community. The company has four response vessels from 23 to 25 feet stationed in Friday Harbor, ready to go at a moment s notice to assist boaters. Much like an auto club for recreational boaters, TowBoatUS is part of a nationwide network of more than 300 locations and 600 response vessels that annually responds to more than 70,000 requests for routine on-water assistance. TowBoatUS Friday Harbor can be hailed on VHF Channel 16, by calling the company directly at , or by phoning BoatUS toll free 24/7 Dispatch Center at

You may remember Ed as one of the most successful designer/builders of LIYC s award winning Fourth of July floats. Ed and his teams provided winning trophies for LIYC s wall of fame for six straight years. Our sympathy goes to Ed s wife Deanna and family. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS: John and Kathy Oakley have completed all requirements for LIYC membership. Please introduce yourselves at the upcoming February General Membership Meeting, where they will be officially presented as new LIYC members. Ed is pictured here (on right) accepting one of our trophies with his float designing protégé Rob Emerson in 2014.

5 LIYC member, Paul Sands, sent his holiday greetings while sailing this 52 footer with his nephew on the Spanish Riviera. Paul, in his 80s, plans to spend about three months returning to Lopez about the first part of March. We should all be so lucky as to be able to enjoy boating for as long as Paul. GREETINGS FROM PAUL JANUARY S GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING ATTENDANCE WAS SMALL BUT MIGHTY With the usual great potluck food and springy paperwhite centerpieces on the tables thanks to Hosts Mike and Juli North. Jim and Judy McBain, Jeff and Lorena Daggett Mike presented the 50/50 Raffle winnings to Jeff Daggett (below right). Thanks to Lori Taylor for photos.
