5 Safety & Emergency Procedures Tornado If you hear or see a tornado coming, warn others & take cover right away If you're in a building, go to the middle of the lowest level away from windows (bathroom or closet if possible) Get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table, hold on & stay there until the danger has passed Use your other arm & hand to protect your head & neck from debris If there is no building nearby, lie flat in a low spot & use your arms & hands to protect your head Lightning The safest place to be during a lightning storm is inside a relatively large, fully enclosed building Avoid bodies of water, open areas, high ground, tall objects (trees, light poles), small shelters in open areas, & metal objects If you are outdoors & lightning is in the immediate area, crouch down with feet close together, keep your head down, & cover your ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder Stay at least 100 feet away from other individuals in the area to prevent bolts from jumping from person to person Injuries Scouts treat minor injuries using their individual first aid kit For serious injuries & hurry cases, Scouts perform immediate aid & call for assistance with three short whistle blasts The first Scouters to arrive on the scene provides additional immediate aid as required, & determines whether medical evacuation is required by ambulance (911) or troop vehicle For Prince William Forest Park, the nearest hospital emergency room is Sentara Hospital Hospital Address Phone Miles 2300 Opitz Boulevard Sentara Hospital (703) Woodbridge, VA

8 Individual & Troop Equipment Scouts (including Webelos) bring the following personal equipment 3 : The Troop provides: Troop first aid kit Tents for Troop campers Dining fly/awning/tarp Water container (large) Soap/hand sanitizer Trash bags Waterproof bag (bear bag with cord & carabineer) & 100 brightly colored rope Work gloves & eye protection Pioneer tools (axe, bow saw, & shovel) & water bucket Lantern(s) and fuel Dutch ovens with lid handlers & gas stoves with fuel Stocked Chuck Boxes and 3- pot- wash system Movie and Projector Materials Needed for Adventure Sessions (as Listed) 3 Additional mandatory Items: closed- toe shoes with good tread and good ankle support (hiking boots recommended) 8

9 Site Information Campsite G Camping at Turkey Run Ridge, Site G Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground (TRR) is a wooded camping facility for organized groups of seven or more persons. The campground is open year- round. Amenities: Each site has a picnic table, grill/fire pit, parking area and lantern post. Restrooms feature sinks and flush toilets (no showers). There is one amphitheater with bench seating, which can be reserved on a first- come, first- served basis. Amphitheatre Use: The Amphitheatre at TRR consists of semi- circular bench seating around a fire pit. The Amphitheatre is reserved through the normal permitting process. A group leader must have a bucket of water during the campfire. Fires must be contained within the stone pit. Bonfires or enlarging the stone enclosure is not permitted. All fires must be "dead" out when you leave. Capacity: TRR Campground has nine wooded group campsites which can accommodate a maximum of 25 to 40 people per site. We are camping in/utilizing site G. 9

10 Important Event Specific Information for Saturday: Activity: Fire Building (Not Just Fire Starting) - Troop Guides and Mentoring ASM(s) Description: Burn the string. Gear Needed by Scouts: Scouts should bring their personal fire starting kits. Equipment Provided by Troop: Fire Pit, 2 three foot stakes, rope or twine, wood matches, fire bucket, hatchet, shovel, some kindling and fuel as well as Scouter supervision and some modest mentoring. Procedure: Each Scout is given up to 10 minutes to build a fire bundle no higher than the first string, then try to burn the second string. No additional fuel can be added once the fire is lit. Activity: River Crossing - Troop Guides and Mentoring ASM(s) Description: You and your team have to evacuate the town and the bridges are washed out. Each team member will be provided one carabineer & an 18- foot section of tubular webbing. Everyone has to tie an emergency harness, safely cross the 1 st river using the pre- constructed one- rope bridge, & build & cross your own one- rope bridge over the 2 nd river.* Prior to crossing, you will be inspected to ensure your harness is correct & that you are wearing work gloves. Equipment Provided by the Troop: First aid kit, two large blue tarps, 75 & 130 of 7/16 kernmantle static ropes, eight carabineers, and eight 18 sections of 1 ¼ tubular webbing (on site); work gloves (individual gear). *Ice Bridge Option possible. Activity: Tent and Campsite Set- Up - Troop Guides and Mentoring ASM(s) Description: Self- explanatory. 10

11 Activity: Radio Merit Badge (MB) Lead Scouter/MBC, ASM Paul Fortunato Description: Using proper call signs, Q signals, and abbreviations, carry on a 10 minute real or simulated radio contact using voice, Morse Code, or digital mode. Gear Needed by Scouts: TBD Equipment Provided by Troop: TBD Activity: Whipping and Fusing Rope Troop Guides and Mentoring ASM(s) Description: Properly identify two types of rope, and execute proper whipping and fusing techniques on the correct type of rope. Equipment Provided by Troop: All rope required, twine, matches, and candles. Scouts will not be permitted to fuse rope other than that which is provided by the Troop. Activity: Knots and Lashings Troop Guides and Mentoring ASM(s) Description: Properly identify and tie six different knots. Properly complete lashings. Equipment Provided by Troop: Lashing training device, ropes for knot tying, rope for lashings, and whipping twine, sheet for movie screen. 11

12 Scout Games: Polynesian Tug of War Insert last year s photos and/or Sea Base photos here before finalizing Blindfold Tent: An excellent communications exercise. Before they even see the task, the team have to select communicators and facilitators. The facilitators are blindfolded and then the sighted members of the team are given the brief. They have to instruct their blindfolded team- mates to erect a tent within a restricted area, then get in it and zip up the door! This can be used as a stand alone Team Activity or a head- to- head race to use during an Ice Breaker session. The Question Web You need to have a spool of string or wool for this game. Ask the young people to stand in a circle. Hold on to the end of the string and throw the ball/spool to one of the young people to catch. They then choose a question from 1-20 to answer. A list of 20 sample questions is given below. Adapt for your group. Holding the string, they then throw it to another member of the group. Eventually this creates a web as well as learning some interesting things about each other! At the end of the game, you could comment that we all played a part in creating this unique web and if one person was gone it would look different. In the same way, it's important that we all take part to make the group what it is, unique and special. 1. If you had a time machine that would work only once, what point in the future or in history would you visit? 2. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? 3. If your house was burning down, what three objects would you try and save? 4. If you HAD to give up one of your senses (hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting) which would it be and why? 5. Name a gift you will never forget? 6. Name one thing you really like about yourself. 7. What's your favorite thing to do in the summer? 8. What is your favorite thing to do in Scouting? 9. Where is the farthest you have travelled? 10. What is the hardest thing you have done in Scouting? 11. What is the grossest thing you ate while camping? 12

13 Fact or fiction? Ask everyone to write on a piece of paper THREE things about themselves which may not be known to the others in the group. Two are true and one is not. Taking turns they read out the three facts about themselves and the rest of the group votes which are true and false. There are always surprises. This simple activity is always fun, and helps the group and leaders get to know more about each other. Divide into two teams. Give each person a blank piece of card. Ask them to write five little known facts about themselves on their card. Include all leaders in this game too. For example, I have a pet iguana, I was born in Iceland, my favorite food is spinach, my grandmother is called Doris and my favorite color is vermillion. Collect the cards into two team piles. Draw one card from the opposing team pile. Each team tries to name the person in as few clues as possible. Five points if they get it on the first clue, then 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. The team with the most points wins. (Note: if you select the most obscure facts first, it will increase the level of competition and general head scratching!) Scout s Notes: 13
