3 Safety & Emergency Procedures Tornado If you hear or see a tornado coming, warn others & take cover right away If you're in a building, go to the middle of the lowest level away from windows (bathroom or closet if possible) Get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table, hold on & stay there until the danger has passed Use your other arm & hand to protect your head & neck from debris If there is no building nearby, lie flat in a low spot & use your arms & hands to protect your head Lightning The safest place to be during a lightning storm is inside a relatively large, fully enclosed building Avoid bodies of water, open areas, high ground, tall objects (trees, light poles), small shelters in open areas, & metal objects If you are outdoors & lightning is in the immediate area, crouch down with feet close together, keep your head down, & cover your ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder Stay at least 100 feet away from other individuals in the area to prevent bolts from jumping from person to person Injuries Scouts treat minor injuries using their individual first aid kit For serious injuries & hurry cases, Scouts perform immediate aid & call for assistance with three short whistle blasts The first Scouters to arrive on the scene provides additional immediate aid as required, & determines whether medical evacuation is required by ambulance (911) or troop vehicle Nearest urgent care facility: Prime Med Urgent Care 3928 Lansing Court, Dumfries, VA (703) Nearest hospital emergency room: Sentara Potomac Hospital 2300 Opitz Boulevard, Woodbridge, Virginia (703) or (540)
4 Individual & Troop Equipment Scouts & Troop guides bring the following personal equipment: The troop provides: Troop first aid kit Tents Dining fly/awning/tarp Water container Soap/hand sanitizer Trash bags Waterproof bag (bear bag with cord & carabineer) 100 brightly colored rope Work gloves & eye protection Whet stone & file Pioneer tools (axe, bow saw, & shovel) & water bucket 21 Scout hike signs in sheet protectors & push pins Lantern(s) Dutch ovens with lid handlers & gas stoves with fuel Blank Totin & Fireman Chits, & Scout ranks 3

6 Event One: Camp Site Set Up Description: This is a 1 ½ hour activity that involves the proper set up of camp to include selecting proper bivouac sites, pitching a tent with ground cloth & rain fly, & establishing dining, kitchen, trash, bathroom, & firewood corral areas. Troop Guides will provide instruction & assist Scouts as necessary. Assistant Scoutmasters will supervise & emphasize the important of using teamwork in a disciplined, sequential process. Requirements Complete: Tenderfoot 1, Prepare to Camp Tenderfoot 2, Camp & Pitch Tent Special Equipment: Tents, dining fly/awning/tarp, water container, soap/hand sanitizer, trash bag, waterproof bag, lantern, water bucket, 100 brightly colored rope, axe, bow saw, shovel, first aid kit (troop gear); backpack with sleeping bag & pad, mess kit, toiletries, handbook, whistle, & BSA ten essentials (individual gear) 5
7 Events Two & Four: Scout Badge Hike Description: These are 1 hour activities designed to prepare Scouts for their first Scoutmaster Conference. It uses a ½ mile hike along Mary Bird Branch trail as the backdrop for a scavenger hunt-like experience. While Assistant Scoutmasters explain the buddy system & hiking rules to the Scouts, Troop Guides go ahead of the group to create 21 stations along the way & prepare for their upcoming station instruction. Signs will depict the Scout sign (1), salute (1), handshake (1), oath (1), law (12), motto (1), slogan (1), outdoor code (1), principles (1), & badge (1). At each station, Scouts reference their handbooks & demonstrate their knowledge of each topic before proceeding to the next. Requirements Complete: Scout 5, Demonstrate Scout Sign, Salute, & Handshake Scout 7, Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan, & Code Scout 8, Describe Scout Badge Tenderfoot 5, Explain Hiking Rules Tenderfoot 7, Scouting Principles Tenderfoot 9, Explain Buddy System Special Equipment: 21 brightly colored 8 ½ x 11 signs in sheet protectors, push pins (troop gear); backpack with handbook, whistle, & BSA ten essentials (individual gear) 6
8 Event Three: Skills Stations Description: This is a 3 ½ hour activity designed to prepare Scouts for their first Scoutmaster Conference & complete several Tenderfoot requirements. It uses the picnic tables at Parking Lot E to create 6 skill stations for round-robin instruction & practice. Stations include: Station One Square Knot using EDGE Station Two Show First Aid & Heimlich Maneuver Station Three Demonstrate Hitch Knots Station Four Identify Poisonous Plants Station Five Demonstrate Flag Care Station Six Whip & Fuse Rope Each station will last 30 minutes. Two 15-minute breaks will be provided after each hour. Troop Guides will provide instruction using the EDGE method, ensuring that the Scouts have maximum time to practice the skill. Assistant Scoutmasters will be present to supervise & sign off on all completed requirements. Requirements Complete: Scout 6, Demonstrate Square Knot Tenderfoot 4a, Demonstrate Whip/Fuse a Rope Tenderfoot 4b, Demonstrate Hitch Knots Tenderfoot 4c, Square Knot Using EDGE Method Tenderfoot 6, Demonstrate Flag Care Tenderfoot 11, Identify Poisonous Plants Tenderfoot 12, Heimlich Maneuver & Show First Aid Special Equipment: American flag, sisal rope & nylon cord, whipping cord, lighter, 3 length of nylon cord, first aid kit, color pictures of poisonous plants (troop gear); backpack with handbook, whistle, & BSA ten essentials (individual gear) 7
9 Event Five: Chits Description: This is a 1 ½ hour activity that will allow Scouts to earn their Totin & Fireman Chits. Scouts will be divided into two groups for round-robin stations. The first station uses the firewood corral for the Fireman Chit, while the second station uses the picnic table by the Turkey Run parking lot for the Totin Chit. Each station will last 40 minutes with a 10-minute break in between. Troop Guides will provide instruction using the EDGE method, ensuring that the Scouts have maximum time to practice the skill. Assistant Scoutmasters will be present to supervise & sign off on all completed requirements. Requirements Complete: Fireman Chit Totin Chit Special Equipment: Pocket knives, whet stone, file, eye protection, work gloves, axe, bow saw, handbooks, blank Fireman and Totin Chits (troop gear); backpack with handbook, whistle, & BSA ten essentials (individual gear) 8
10 Event Six: Chili Cook-Off Description: This is a 2 hour activity that will allow Scouts to prepare & cook a meal using a cooking fire & dutch oven. Scouts & Troop Guides will be divided into groups of at least 4, provided a dutch oven, & a recipe & ingredients to make chili. Assistant Scoutmasters will supervise to ensure proper food handling & fire safety. Requirements Complete: Tenderfoot 3, Prepare/Cook Meal Special Equipment: Dutch oven & lid handler, chili recipe & ingredients, hand wash station (troop gear); water bottle & mess kit (individual gear) 9
11 Event Seven: Scoutmaster Conference & Patrol Bonding Description: Two hours are allotted for Scouts to conduct Scoutmaster Conferences & develop their patrol identity (patrol name, yell, flag, & patch). An Assistant Scoutmaster will start this period by discussing the organization & history of the troop, describing the process of how rank requirements are captured & culminate in the Scoutmaster Conference/Board of Review, & reviewing the requirements for the patrol to have a name, patch, yell, & flag. Scouts will decide on their patrol identity & design their flag during this time, as well as conduct one-on-one Scoutmaster Conferences for Scout rank. Troop Guides get to relax. Requirements Complete: Scout rank Scoutmaster Conference, page 17 & 34 Tenderfoot 8, Patrol Knowledge Special Equipment: Scout ranks (troop gear); notebook, writing utensil, & handbook (individual gear) 10
