1 Acorn A s Our 43rd Year The NutShell July 2014 Acorn A s Officers and Committee Chairs 2014 President Mike Cozad Vice President Glenn Martin Secretary Bob Woodford Treasurer Steve Danzer. Hello again everyone. Well the summer is finally here and the days are longer so that means longer tours and car shows. The club will be ordering more business cards as Glenn, Cal and I handed out about a dozen to prospective members at the Cherry festival. These are a great way to advertise the club. So if people start chatting you up about the car, hand them a card-it can t hurt. So when they arrive, probably at the August meeting please pick up a stack. As you may know, a few amendments were proposed to the bylaws. They were read at the June meeting and will be discussed at the August meeting. I will try to really shorten the meeting Tour Master George Diamantine Public Relations Brian McGarry Nutshell Facilitator Bill Biddell Past President Mona Diamantine Sunshine Bea Van Wetter Membership Bill Biddell Attendance Mary Baptista Accessories Anne Biddell so we have plenty of time to discuss them. So if you have any thoughts on the issues please bring them to the August meeting. And last but not least, please make sure you sign up for the picnic ASAP. We need to know so we can start buying the food and drinks. August will be here before you know it and I would like everyone to participate. And remember to bring the kids/grandkids for the playground and swimming pool. Historian Brian McGarry presented the photo albums noting the first meeting of our Model A Chapter was on May charter members where Joe Seng, Joe Soares, Doug Vieyra, Augie Nevalez, Mike Navone and Kay and Terry Wilkerson (Kay Crosby) There were several name suggestions before the crew settled on the Acorn A s. In the beginning years meetings were held at member s homes. Public Relations Brian McGarry gave a report on the 2 past events. We had 4 cars at the Lone Tree Cemetery Memorial Day event and 4 cars at the Cherry Festival parade and festival. See the list for PR events for the upcoming events. An upcoming tour, on June 19 is the Diamantine s Third Thursday tour leaving Creekside at 10:30 for a drive to the valley and lunch in Pleasanton. The tour will be leaving at 9 AM. August 16 th is the Club annual picnic is at Roberts Park. Mike asked everyone to sign up and be sure to list what you are contributing to the pot luck. Mike noted parking is right next to our site and there is a pool and park for kids to play in as well as our picnic area. He noted he handed out a stack of cards at the Cherry Festival. Mike asked David Samson to assist him in getting more cards printed for the members. 3 NutShell Coming Tours Page 3 Pep Boys is having a grand opening of their speed shop in Union City July 19 form The address is Industrial Parkway SW. There will be a car show, prizes, and music. I have it on good authority that the Pep Boys will match Summits prices. There is another car show on July 12th that is near and dear to Jerry Gamazs' heart. It is the 16th annual Car Show at the Redwood Chapel at Redwood Road in Castro Valley. The admission is FREE and lunch is only 6 bucks. Each car entry includes 1 lunch ticket We have just heard that Leo Perry a long time member of the Acorn A s passed away. He was a member with his wife Birtie for many years. Pete Westler passed away on February 15, 2014, at the age of 81. Pete was a Charter member of the Redding Rambling A s, and served as their President and tour leader many times since Pete was very active in the NCRG, and was even its President at one point. Be sure to read the articles to find the meeting place. Donation Tour June 28th Hi Folks, well here is the primer for my Donation Tour-hopefully an annual tradition from now on. There will be three charities that people will be buying things for, which is part of the surprise. I am thinking no more than $20 for each charity and this will be a timed event. Whoever comes in with the fastest time wins. We will meet up at Cull Canyon Park at 9 a.m. and I will send out the teams from there. Each team will leave at slightly different times with different instructions. This will be repeated three times. Sabotage is legal as long as it is safe and fun. At the end I will collect all of the items and we can go to lunch. This way we can give something back to the community and have fun at the same time all while driving our cars. 07/10 Maria Loera 07/19 Denise Andersen 07/28 Virginia Boling 07/29 Wanda Romero 07/05 Bob Kurtz 07/10 Calvin Laymance 07/16 Michael Cozad 07/18 Glenn Martin 07/18 Stephen Danzer 07/18 Brian Mc Garry 07/26 Mandy De Smidt 07/31 Roy Wong

While we picked up Mike Anderson at a servicer station and got out to stretch our legs. We made a short jog and got onto Warm Springs that turned into Milpitas Blvd. We got there just in time for the swap meet. The Embassy suites was the perfect place for the Roundup, all the events were their expect for the Grand Tour. Saturday was both the car and fashion judging. Sue McGarry, Bea VanWetter and Mike Cozad entered the fashions and Jackie Brooks was a judge, while Gene Peters and I did car judging. Mike Anderson took a second place award in the car judging! Sunday was the Grand tour and the Gymkhana. Mike Cozad and Denise Peters entered the Gymkhana. The Peters took a 1st and a 3rd! Cal and Richard both won raffle prizes. We all enjoyed the short Awards Banquet and left Monday morning at 8:30 to make the Lone Tree Memorial Day Service. We would like to Thank the Diamantines for tail gunning the way up and the Martins for the way back. Thanks for those who attended. Brian & Sue Sue McGarry Bea Van Wetter Kathy Martin

Pacifica Castle Tour 10 Model A s, 5 Moderns and 1 Vintage Vehicle (a Pontiac) left from the Chase Parking lot and made their way across the San Mateo Bridge, where we joined by one more Model A and Modern. In all there were 36 people on the tour. Everyone made it up the hill to 280 and onto Skyline before descending into Pacifica. Our Shuttle busses were waiting and took us to the Castle. Docents in period costumes were ghosts of former residents and gave a history of the Castle from that person s perspective. It was a very enjoyable tour. After the tour we regrouped and had a Chinese lunch in Pacifica. We left via Highway 1 and onto Skyline Drive for a grand view of the bay and the first wisps of fog of the day. We enjoyed great weather for the drive to and from. Thanks to all who attended. David Samson, Tour Leader
7 Page 7 Brian, David, Tony, Bruce Davis, Glenn, Kathy & Cal Our Third Thursday tour started at Creekside at 10:30 with 4 Model A s and One vintage pick up. Heading east we toured through Castro Valley onto Crow Canyon and onto San Ramon Blvd. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood with gorgeous weather and fun banter between Big Daddy and Sweet Tour Talker. You will have to come on our tours to find out to Jim Correia, Mona & George Diamantine, Charlie Amaral, Anne & Bill Biddell, Dahlia Amaral, Virginia & Ralph Boling whom we are referring. Our destination brought us to downtown Pleasanton for lunch. We parked in a shaded lot and then George Diamantine had us walk to the other end of town for our lunch. Diamantine claimed it was a walking tour but Virginia Boling referred to it as a forced march. There were no complaints about the lunch at Strizzi s as the food was delicious. The return trip took us through Sunol, down Niles Canyon, back onto Palomares Canyon coming out at Dublin Blvd. It was a prefect day for a tour Anne, Virginia, George, Ralph, Bill, Dahlia, Charlie, Mona, Jim with our friends in our Model A s. George and Mona Diamantine
