1 Acorn A s Our 47th Year The NutShell August 2018 has been a very busy month for our Club. We started the month with the 47 th Annual Club Picnic. I led 6 model A s and a couple of modern s on a tour through the foothills and on a recovery mission to retrieve Cathy Martin s steering wheel cover. We met the rest of the Club members at our house where we had a thoroughly pleasant afternoon. Thank you to everyone who came, who helped get ready and clean up. Next came the Semifreddi s tour. Mona and I led a combined tour of her book Club, The Arcane Club and the Acorn A s to Semifreddi s Bakery. We had 21 in the group and all came away with an appreciation of how much goes into a great bread. We also each had a bag of goodies. Two days later, Brian and Sue McGarry led a tour to the antique bus open house. You ll hear more about the bus tour from Brian and Sue later in the newsletter. There are a couple of tours lined up for September be sure to sign up. We have a lot of Thursday s and weekends in the rest of the year that are great opportunities for each of us to lead a group on an interesting tour, to enjoy driving our cars or just to get together. Finally, you won t want to miss out on the September meeting where there will be an instant winner for our raffle. Our docent at the Bakery was Mike, one of the owners, who gave us a great overview of how Semifreddi s started and what it takes to make a great bread. We toured the facility learning about how they combine automation measuring their flour, mixing and rising the dough and then how they are hands on forming the various products. It was impressive to learn how much Semifreddi s gives back to the community. They bake bread daily for several food banks, restaurants and grocery stores. Now we all knew about the restaurants and stores, but I actually thought they gave away day old bread to the food banks. Nope, it s all fresh with no preservatives. Semifreddi s also has a terrific profit sharing program for their employees. We left with each of us carrying a bag filled with a variety of Semifreddi s breads and croutons. After working up an appetite smelling that delicious bread, we headed over to Pier 29 on the water in Alameda. Thank you to all who came on the tour. Mona Diamantine

This year we had 29 Club members who either gathered at our house or participated in the tour with George to our house. Everyone brought a tasty dish to accompany the tri-tip and roasted chicken. There was so much food we all ended up with a second meal at home. It was a lazy afternoon with good friends and George and I thank everyone who came to the picnic and especially those who helped set up and clean up.
