1 Acorn A s Our 44th Year l l e h S t u N e h T Greetings fellow Model Aers., well it is that time of the year again, it is picnic season! So here are the logistics and what is needed for this year s picnic. We will meet in the church parking lot where we have our meetings every month at 9:30. We will then leave around 10ish and take our time getting to the picnic grounds where will eat, drink and be somewhat merry. Now here is what I need from every member who is planning to attend. You will need to sign up with our treasurer via if have not signed up at the July meeting or may not make the August meeting. You will also need to send him $10 per person/$25 for visitors. This is so we have a head count for what to buy. So to recap, if you want to attend the annual picnic /call/talk to Steve Danzer to sign up. ALSO, we are looking for volunteers to help set up, cook and break down the picnic area. If you wish to volunteer please me or see me at the meeting. Otherwise I will have to start volunteering people they have been drafted. 2 Page 2 2 Meeting Minutes NutShell.Welcome: President Mike Cozad called the meeting to order. Denise Peters moved to approve the minutes as published in the NutShell with one correction, Cathy Martin s name was spelled incorrectly with a K. Carol Low 2 nd and the motion carried. Attendance: Mary Baptista reported 19 families, 29 people and 1 guest. Bill Biddell introduced their daughter Elizabeth as their guest. Sunshine: Bea Van Wetter announced the July Birthdays and the Club sang Happy Birthday. Membership: Bill Biddell reported we have 49 member families and holding. NutShell: Bill Biddell asked to have all articles, pictures in by the 20 th of the month. Historian: Brian McGarry announced he brought the 2014 album. Public relations: Brian McGarry announced past events included the Fremont 4 th of July Parade, The Redwood Christian Car Show on July 11. Upcoming events were the Thursday Night Downtown Hayward Street Party 7/16 and 8/20, The Shinn House Ice cream social on July 19, History Park with Antique Cars on September 13 and the St. John Kronstadt Care Center Car Show (at the home where his wife Ida De Mello is staying) on Sept 19 from 11 AM 2 PM. This last event will take place at 4432 James Ave, Castro Valley and will be a BBQ lunch. Ken De Mello was a past president of our Club and he and Ida are long time members. Secretary s Report: Mona Diamantine read a thank you note from Ed and Nancy Carvalho from the Modesto A s thanking us for the great raffle item we donated to the Round up. Tour Master: George Diamantine invited Bill Biddell up to tell about the adventures on the Yosemite Tour. There were a combined driving and towing miles of about 750 miles. Mike Cozad will be leading the annual picnic tour. We will leave the Church parking lot at 9:30 AM on Aug 15, heading to Roberts Park in Oakland. Tony Shull announced again the Golden Tee tour on August 22 will be leaving Creekside at 10 Am to test our skill at miniature golf. George and Mona Diamantine are leading the 3 rd Thursday Mystery tour on Sept 17. General December Meeting 17, 2005 July 14, 2015 Sign up s will be at the next meeting. George and Mona also plan on leading something in May up to Murphy s. Stay tuned. Bill Biddell suggested we add the phone app Gas Buddy to be able to locate gas stations on our tours and also the cheapest gas. Treasurer Report: Steve Danzer gave our Checking and savings balance which included sixteen cents in interest. Old Business: none New Business: President Mike noted the cost of the picnic is $10 per person, and asked everyone to please sign up and write what side dishes you plan on bringing. He also asked for help for set up, cooking and take down. George Diamantine volunteered for set up and take down, Tony and David volunteered to cook. The club will provide the meats and pop and water. Club members will provide side dishes, salads, appetizers. Shake Award: Tony Shull announced there were two awards this month. On the recent Yosemite Tour one person really stood out, Carol Low. Carol received a tiny rescue vehicle and a girl s 2 best friends, chocolate and wine plus a gift certificate to lunch for both Al and Carol. The second recipients were Bill and Anne Biddell for keeping everyone s spirits up on the recent Yosemite tour. They received an emergency vehicle towing a pork chop along with a bottle of booze to help him remember the tour or forget it. Refreshments this month were brought by Cathy Martin and Denise Peters. Refreshments next month: Mona Diamantine, Tony Shull and Kathy Morte. Kathy Morte moved to adjourn, Denise Peters seconded, we adjourned to enjoy refreshments and conduct the Club Raffle

Page 4 Yosemite and Beyond Tour #715 The tour started in three locations, Castro Valley, Quincy and Grass Valley. We all then met in Mariposa for the official start.

The first thing we found was people, people and more people. The vistas and valley were still beautiful with some water coming over the falls.

4 Page 4 Yosemite and Beyond Tour #715 The tour started in three locations, Castro Valley, Quincy and Grass Valley. We all then met in Mariposa for the official start. We had 9 Model A s and one modern iron. The first night we had a fantastic dinner at Charles Street. Then the next morning we headed off to Yosemite Valley. The first thing we found was people, people and more people. The vistas and valley were still beautiful with some water coming over the falls. After retuning to the motel we had another great dinner at Savoury s. On Thursday morning we left to cloudy skies and headed toward Tioga Pass at 9600 feet, but at Yosemite entrance the trouble started. Dimantine s car lost power and it was decided to have it towed home. At the same time Morte s car was running rough and after 2 hours of trying all remedies they elected to tow their car home. We now had 7 Model A s and headed toward the high country. In the middle of one way control traffic the Biddell s muffler dropped off. After 10 minutes of holding up all traffic the muffler was back in place and the tour resumed. As we passed 8000 feet there was 3 of snow. Then it started to rain and it poured at 40 degrees. Having planned for 80 degree temperatures, we found it to be a bit chilly, especially those of us in open cars. Finally the rain stopped and we dropped down to Highway 395 and turned north to Topaz Lake and our motel. After getting in it rained again, but we were all safe in the casino trying to pay for our trip. On Friday we awoke to partially cloudy skies. Leaving at 10 am we drove to the Lahontan Fish Hatchery for a very interesting tour. At this time Mike was having car problems and did some adjusting to his carburetor. Then on Saturday we headed over Carson Pass toward Jackson. Going over the pass Mike had more problems and ended up being towed to the motel. On Sunday he was towed home to Quincy. Sunday found us at the end of the tour and the Spencer s and Seibold s left us to head home. Going down Highway 88 the Biddell s timing gear broke and they were towed the rest of the way home, leaving only 3 Model A s. The good news is that all made it home safely even though 4 of 9 cars needed to be towed.
