If you haven't signed in to our ffsacramento.org website lately, you are missing out on wonderful local events. Members learned how to make wire bracelets and keyrings for host and ambassador gifts. The Sacramento Shutterbugs have been sharing how to take more effective photos and then practicing what was learned. Over thirty people enjoyed lunch and then toured the Gekkeikan state-of-theart brewery in Folsom. We've had lots of planning sessions for future journeys and big events later this year. Our New Member Orientation was well attended, and these new members are looking forward to getting involved and supporting our club. Great news! FFI has approved our request to visit the Toronto, Canada club in May or June of Our club also received approval for a two-week journey next February to Mexico; one week with Tuxtla-Gutierrez followed by another week with Xalapa. We will be hosting club members from Banjarmasin, Indonesia, which means we can anticipate an incredible year of cross-cultural experiences! Our most-pressing need is for an Ambassador Coordinator to Mexico, but please let me know if you are interested in being an Ambassador/Host Coordinator for any of the above journeys. You just have a few more days to register for the 30th Anniversary Celebration and meeting with FFI CEO/President Jeremi Snook. It will be a great time to remember our club's heritage and get a glimpse into our FF future. Hope to see you there! Kathy Hart, President

4 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 4 Announcements March 9th Anniversary Celebration By Kathy Hart Happy 30th anniversary to FF of Sacramento! Jeremi Snook, FFI CEO and President, will present at the March 9th FF Sacramento general meeting and anniversary celebration at Trinity Cathedral 2620 Capitol Ave, Sacramento. We will celebrate with a light dinner buffet at 5:45 followed by a presentation from Jeremi. There will be lots of photos to enjoy and a huge drawing with 25 prizes. This will be a fabulous event you won't want to miss! Did you know... By Pat Longest, Charter Member 10 things you may not know about Friendship Force 1. Before the beginning... In 1973, Dr. Wayne Smith, an American minister working in Brazil, talked to his friend Jimmy Carter, then governor of Georgia, about his idea of promoting world peace through international friendships. As a result, a group from Pernambuco, Brazil, was hosted by Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter in the Georgia governor's mansion. 2. Friendship Force International was established in 1977 by Wayne Smith with the help of President Jimmy Carter to promote cultural understanding with the idea that a world of friends is a world of peace. 3. The first exchange was between Atlanta, Georgia, and Newcastle upon Tyne, England, with a charter plane flying hundreds of ambassadors in either direction, including Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter. This type of exchange continued for five years before the weeklong exchanges (now called journeys) started. 4. There are Friendship Force clubs in over 60 countries on six continents. 5. The Carters were active in FF for 15 years, during which Rosalyn was FFI honorary chairman. Their son Chip was president of FFI for several years, resigning in While Chip was president, he was scheduled to speak at a Western Regional Conference hosted by the Sacramento club but was unable to attend at the last minute. (continued on Pg 5)

5 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 5 6. The Sacramento club was started by Helmut and Doris Schroeder with the help of a Bay Area club and FFI. Wayne Smith, president of FFI, came to Sacramento June 19, 1988, and presented Helmut with the signed by-laws and license for our club. The July 1988 newsletter, our first, reported 31 paid members. 7. Our first inbound exchange was a group of about 20 ambassadors from Arnhem, Holland, in October of We were new at this, so we decided to honor our first guests with a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings for 80-plus people at the Crosswoods club house. Despite or because of some unusual (to them) foods, everyone seemed to enjoy the dinner. A story in The Sacramento Bee about the exchange and dinner quoted Doris Schroeder, a native of Germany, "This is so wonderful, especially for someone like me." During World War II, Germany was fighting the Netherlands on the very land from which this delegation came. "And now we're eating dinner together", Doris added. That is what Friendship Force is all about. P.S. Consensus of the Sacramento club after the dinner: NEVER AGAIN! 8. FFI was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for its efforts for promoting peace and friendship with the citizens of the USSR. No, FFI didn't win but it was an honor to be nominated. 9. A few years ago, FFI asked the Sacramento club if we would help establish a FF club in Vladivostok, Russia. Although that project was put on hold indefinitely, it was a great honor for our club to be invited to help with such an undertaking. 10. The mission of Friendship Force is as important now as it was 41 years ago. We must continue to strive for world peace, friendship and cultural understanding. Come to our special 30th anniversary general meeting on March 9 to hear what FFI CEO Jeremi Snook has to say about the future of Friendship Force International. Sunshine Corner By Barbara Beland It s been another quiet month for Sunshine Corner. That s either good news, or we missed something! Please let the Sunshine Corner know of all news of deeds of wonder, amazement and accomplishment, as well as any illness or situation that needs a card mailed out. The Sunshine Committee of one is: Barbara Beland, (530) , or bdbeland@gmail.com

6 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 6 Adventures in Auburn By Kathy Hart Adventures in Auburn-April 4th Note-you must be signed in on the website to see and register for this event. Our adventure consists of two unique tours where we explore interesting places in the greater Sacramento area. First, we'll meet at 10:30 AM at Ceronix, which is the only factory in the US to make LCD monitors for casino gaming machines. There is an amazing bird sanctuary on site and over 1,500 Koi fish. After our tour, we will enjoy a Let's Eat Out for lunch at a local restaurant. We'll head to our second tour of the day-the Van Howd Studios at 1 pm. Douglas Van Howd is a world-renowned wildlife and western creations artist. He sculpts, paints and does photography. His sculpture of Ronald Reagan is in the Sacramento Capitol. These are wonderful behind-the-scenes tours that the general public does not enjoy. These tours will be initially available to membersonly. The capacity is 30. If you register and need to cancel, please do it online so another member can join the tour. able to participate in the tours. If we have not reached capacity (30) by March 28, please Kathy Hart to see if you can add a guest. You MUST register on-line to be Want to carpool? Just check to see which members have registered for the tour and arrange riding together. There is no fee to participate in the tour. To register, click here. 7 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 7 Super-Regional Conference By Marty McKnew Coming May 3-5, 2018 Have you registered for the Super Regional Conference yet? The registration is open and easy to do (Register_now). Members of our Club who volunteer to work at least 4 hours on the conference can register for $50 plus $45 to attend the Gala dinner for a total of $95. What a bargain. Everything you need to know is on the Conference Updates page on the website at There really is something for everyone. This is a unique opportunity to meet and greet members of 36 other Friendship Force clubs, learn more about the Friendship Force, and have a great time. Mini-Journey Homestays By Audrey Wiechman, Mini-Journeys/Homestay Coordinator Pre/Post Conference Mini-Journey Homestays: Would you like to get away for a few days before or after you attend the Western Super-Regional Conference in May? The Reno-Tahoe and Las Vegas clubs still have spaces remaining on their Mini-Journeys before the Conference. If you re not helping with our Mystery Mini-Journey, you could join a homestay after the conference in the San Francisco Bay Area or San Diego- Orange County. It s a great way to make connections and share experiences with some of our friends who don t live so far away. They might even take you to events and interesting places you never knew about or thought about visiting in their area. For more information about these Mini-Journeys, go to Let me know if you are interested, and I will send you an Ambassador Application to complete and submit. Audrey Wiechman audreywiechman@gmail.com (916) Mystery Mini-Journey Hosts By Roz Worrall Check the event calendar for Host Meetings March and April. Attendance at the last two meetings will be important in finalizing clues, apparel, and roles you will be playing. Hosts will each be receiving an additional clue development form this month to complete prior to the March meeting. (continued on Pg 8)

8 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 8 While Sacramento has received the largest proportion of mini-journey signups, we currently have more hosts than ambassadors and are hoping for more applicants. Even if you have not yet been matched with an ambassador, your participation as red herrings will still be fun and critical to the success of the mystery. Be sure to register for the March 29 meeting here. Those registered will be sent a gate code to Elaine Wilson and Roy Weaver's home prior to the meeting. For more information, please contact Roz Worrall. Umbrella Dancers By Roz Worrall The FF Sacramento Umbrella Dancers held their orientation meeting on February 28 at Sun City, Roseville. This one-time performance group will be performing at the Western Regional Super Conference, Cinco De Mayo Gala Dinner, in Elk Grove, Saturday May 5. It will be a performance like no other! Want to join the fun? There is room for a few more dancers who can commit to weekly rehearsals in April. Dancers are looking for rehearsal space in April, large enough to accommodate a dozen dancers with umbrellas. If you want to help arrange/reserve (free or low cost) rehearsal space, want more info or would like to dance, contact Cheewa James or Roz Worrall! Big Canoe+Huntsville Outbound By Charlene Taylor Big Canoe, Georgia May and Huntsville, Alabama May 30-June 6 Interest in these outbound journeys has been excellent. The Big Canoe portion of our trip is full, with 20 ambassadors. There are 4 slots remaining for Huntsville, AL. According to the 2014 census, Huntsville has the highest number of PhDs. per capita in the entire United States. This is due to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center located in Huntsville. They are also known for their Southern hospitality. We ll visit the Space Center along with The Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, antebellum homes, Lynchburg Distillery etc. Interested? charlenetaylor2@comcast.net by March 1.

9 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 9 San Antonio Inbound By Jodi Vicario We have been regular communication with the San Antonio Club and have a fabulous week already outlined. San Antonio is now putting final touches on their ambassador list for the Inbound Journey June 19th - June 26th. In the meantime, we are looking for additional help with an emphasis on Home Hosts. Please contact Jodi Vicario if you are interested in being a Home Host or are interested in helping in other way - no prior experience required. Once the ambassadors are confirmed, we will hold a planning session in mid to late March. Shutterbugs By Roz Worrall Shutterbugs March Update: The FFI Photography Club Cluster Monthly FOCUS for March is Backlit and Silhouette Photography. This high contrast theme of light and dark spurs the artistic nature of most photographers. Each month FFI Club Clusters, wherever they may be in the world, can FOCUS on one theme that shapes learning, practice, and skills for that month. (Shutterbugs is the Sacramento FF Photo Club Cluster) Shutterbugs meetings are based on these monthly FOCUS Themes. The meetings often including short videos by world class photographers, presentations by our own members, and hands-on practice with the features/settings of their cameras and smart phones. We hope to do some outdoor photo shoots in coming months. FF Sacramento Shutterbugs meet twice a month at the Arcade Library in Sacramento, alternating between Friday evenings and Wednesday afternoons. Check the event calendar for meeting times and to register (free) for meeting attendance. If you are interested in joining or finding out more, FFSACShutterbugs@gmail.com.

Judy Maas/Crafts chair: Pot Holders New Member Orientation By Jodi Vicario Crafters at work The first 2018 New Member Orientation was held on Tuesday February 27 th. Eight new members and a few potential new members along with Kathy Hart and Pat Ghiglieri met at the home of Jodi Vicario for a luncheon, introduction to the club, and building of new friendships. 11 X Friendship Force of Sacramento Inc. Page 11 Gekkeikan Sake Tour By Chris Smith Lynn Meyer coordinated 2 tours of the Gekkeikan Sake brewery in Folsom this month 36 registered for the tours! Many of us had lunch at the Kanpai Japanese restaurant before heading over to the brewery. We saw a film about sake brewing and learned that it's more like beer than wine or distilled liquors. See Sake 101 for more info. Mr. Yousuke Kawase, the brew master, walked us through the plant and explained the process. They have been making Sake in Folsom for 29 years because of the quality of the water and the availability of the rice. They bring in tons of rice each day. At the end we were able to taste several different styles and to our surprise it was smooth and flavorful, not like what many of us have had before. All the flavor comes from the rice itself, no other additives! And serve it cool or warm but never hot because that would destroy the flavor. Another fun outing!
