2 Let s Rally Again Did you get to attend any of the rallies this past spring? We did not get to make all of them as we had hoped. Due to scheduling conflicts we were unable to attend the Texas District Rally or the Louisiana District Rally this year. However, we did make it to Marshall for the Region H Rally and then made it to the district rallies at Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. If you missed any of those rallies, you missed a great time! While they were all different, they were all a lot of fun. Of course, seeing friends from other chapters and places is always great regardless of where you are. It seems like it has been forever since we have been at a rally. We have had a bit of a lull in the schedule and with the summer heat some of us have not been riding as much. However, that is about to change. Wing Ding is right around the corner! As I write this, it is only about a month until we hit the road for Billings. If you have still been trying to decide whether you are going to join us or not, let me encourage you to go ahead and make plans to join us. For Gina and I, the first Wing Ding we attended was in Billings in the year We are looking forward to making the trip again. Billings is a great venue for Wing Ding. If you have never attended Wing Ding, you are missing out! Think about all of the best things about our local rallies and then just multiply them by about five to ten. Our local district and region rallies are great but Wing Ding is the granddaddy of them all. Of course, if Wing Ding in Billings doesn t fit your schedule or budget, we get to rally again just a few weeks later right here in Oklahoma. Our Oklahoma District Rally will be September 29-October 2 in Muskogee. Make sure you have it on your calendar and go ahead and send in your registration. Be sure to complete both sides of the registration form. Your District Team is busily working to put the final touches our plans for our rally. I hope you will join us and help make this the best Oklahoma District Rally we ve had in a long time! Johnie D. Fredman Oklahoma District Director August, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 2

4 Our Oklahoma District Membership Enhancement Coordinators John & Shawn Irons Insight Do You Know Your Chapter Members? Hello to all our fellow Oklahoma GWRRA district members. It seems that July just flew by. A lot of members were getting their Gold Wings ready for Wing Ding next month. Shawn and I bit the dust and ordered a new Blade cargo trailer from Timeout. All I did was to make more room for Shawn to buy more items and put it in a bigger trailer. July 16 th we held the District Couple of the Year workshop in Stillwater, Ok. We had a total of 19 district chapter members attend. We got a chance to find out how to choose a Chapter Couple for District Directors. What it is to be a Chapter Couple and what is expected of them. How to fill out a reseume. It was a fun two hours for all of the couples and directors that attended. 6 SIGNS AND WONDERS BY SUE The Oklahoma District Rally announces a special vendor is scheduled for our rally. Sue Hopper, of Signs and Wonders by Sue, is scheduled to attend. Sue is a true artist. She started painting motorcycles in 1982 and travels coast to coast attending various rallies, painting at dealerships and shops along the way. She evens paints at customer s homes and has done this in Muskogee and Broken Arrow. Her talent is evident by the details in her murals. If you can dream it, she can paint it. Take advantage of this special opportunity. If you have been thinking about a special picture/mural on your motorcycle, trailer, helmet or car, this is the artist to do it. You can check out more of her work on: and more photos on She is already taking appointment. You can contact her at signsandwonders@hotmail.com or All the pictures with this article are examples of Sue s work done for people in Muskogee. These pictures may do not give her work true justice. 8 Our Oklahoma Educator Max Rowlett SUMMER HEAT Summer is in full swing in the good ole USA. Our average temperatures have been in the upper 90s with the past five days in the degree range. The past few months have set records as the hottest average months on record. As a result, we are seeing an increase in the number of heat related injuries and deaths. One of my classmates from high school recently retired and decided to enjoy his retirement with a game of golf. He pushed through 18 holes of golf and attempted to drive home when he passed out, struck a curb and rolled his car two times. He is recovering in the hospital and feels lucky to be alive. The lesson to learn from this is to drink plenty of water during the day ( Four 16 oz. bottles of water daily minimum recommended), and maybe a sports drink. Hydrate & hydrate, before beginning any activities outdoors. Pace yourself and take more frequent breaks. Attempt to limit your most strenuous activities to early morning or late evening hours when the temperatures are normally cooler. As motorcyclists we might consider beginning our rides earlier in the day and stopping for the day before the highest heat between 3-5 pm. Use cooling wraps, vests, and caps to keep the body cool. Recognize heat related problems and how to properly treat them. Heat Cramps Uncontrollable muscle spasms of the arms, abdominal muscles, calves and back. Stop your activity, move to a cooler location, and drink more water or sports drink. Caution: most sports drinks contain large amounts of sodium! Massage and stretch the cramping muscles. Heat Exhaustion The person will show signs of heavy sweating and pale, cool skin. The person may become nauseated and vomit. Complain of dizziness, headaches and feel weak. You will want to stop activity, move to the shade or cooler location. Loosen clothing and have the person lie down, raise the legs 6 12 inches and apply cool wet cloths to the head and body. A sports drink is recommended to add carbohydrates and electrolytes. If the person doesn t respond quickly, seek medical attention. Heat Stroke The person will show many of the heat exhaustion symptoms and have an altered mental condition. The skin will become red, very warm, and be completely dry. The person may collapse and have a seizure. This is a medical emergency and is life threatening! Notify EMS! Begin aggressive cooling with what resources you have until EMS arrives. Immerse the person in water, spray or pour water on the body. If an ice pack is available place them on the person s neck, groin, and armpits. 10 Our Oklahoma District MAP Kay Smith Greeting my fellow Goldwingers and Veterans, I received this on an very important subject. I am using my time as the District Oklahoma Motorist Awareness Coordinator to spread this event to the members so they are aware of its meaning. It is very important that we always wear all the Gear all the time, Share the Road, and always be aware of our safety, and most of all be proud that we are having fun, safety and being aware. As a Veteran, married to a Veteran, and being a daughter of a Veteran it is very important that it is shown the respect that our flag, our country, and the men and women that have served and are serving receive. In this we are asked to join the Naval Enlisted Reserve of Oklahoma to show our respect and Honor our brave Veterans and Service members. So mark your Calendars and just think about joining my husband, Smitty and I and other Veterans there that we care and proud to be a part of this important event. Here is the that I received. Greetings, I am Roy Wano, Flag Committee Chairman, for the: Naval Enlisted Reserve of Oklahoma (NERA-OK), home to one of the largest 'legal' hand held American flags in the nation. On August 20, 2016, we are having a special flag ceremony, like no other! The Citizen Potawatomi Nation, is allowing us to use the: Firelake Arena, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. This is an event to 'Honor',those brave men and women who have sacrificed so much, for the freedoms we now share. In addition, to raise contributions so to retire the giant American flag, accordingly (being displayed within the arena)! The main ceremony is at: 2pm (1400hrs), inside the arena, which will consist of: A presentation of our nations colors, from numerous color guards from across the state, A Native Drum team, singing warrior songs with Native Dancers, a moment of silence for the fallen, a prayer for all who have served and those currently serving, A Army Bugler playing TAPS, and the National Anthem will be sung. A Classic Chevy Car Club of Oklahoma Show, the Oklahoma City Chief Petty Officers Associations 1:55 scale CV89 USS Sooner - scale model Aircraft Carrier, live music from local artist, etc.. We would very much like to see your organization represented at this unique event, helping send a message that: "They will not be forgotten". If some of your organization can commit to coming, please let me know! Information (including pictures) about us, can be found at: neraflag.org and our Facebook page. Thank you for your time and consideration, in this request. Look forward in hearings from you soon! Respectively, Roy Wano Flag Committee Chairman (NERA-OK) roywano@neraflag.org August, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 10

11 This also sounds like a fun event to show off our bikes, trikes, and wearing our vests. So we are looking forward to seeing you there. What a better way than to make everyone aware of motorist awareness is making yourself seen. Look twice and Save a life. Share the Road and make yourself seen.
