They are held the second Saturday of each month, Sirloin Stockade, 208 N. Perkins, Stillwater, Oklahoma 9 a.m. PLANNING SESSIONS: Last Friday of the month. Same location, 6:30 p.m. Come join us! Website: for more information Chattin with Char Keeping with the Chapter X tradition of staying busy, May had three chapter visits, three dinner rides, two District Rallies, recruitment and attended a retirement party for Marie Wilson. Of course, the highlight of the month was the trip to Ronald McDonald House to deliver the pull tabs; over one hundred pounds of tabs were delivered. Nine Chapter X members attended the Arkansas District Rally in Harrison, in cars. This was a first for Chapter X, all the attendees in cars! Poor Jack, he made the decision to go with Cottons and not ride his bike because he, like all of us, saw nothing but bad weather in the forecast. Of course, all we saw was a small sprinkle all weekend! So, Jack whined the entire time about not riding his bike when it was beautiful weather. I would venture to guess there will not be any cars, just bikes and trikes when Chapter X leaves for Missouri. We all had a great time at MEC District 10 In the Spotlight 11 Ridin with Rex 12 Cares & Concerns 13 June Calendar 14 Last Gathering 15 Pull Tabs 16 the rally even if we were in cars. Chapter X participated in the Family Feud but did not win: they did cause some laughter. The most laughter was the Not So Newly Wed Game, just like the TV show, spouses do not always know what the other is thinking or going to say. It was pretty funny. We all participated in the dress competitions bringing home several first places in out of district for t-shirts, polo shirts and couple in theme dress. The theme was Super Heroes; Cottons were dressed as Superman and Superwoman. Steve was different looking with black hair, be sure to look at the pictures. Rex won first place mascot and we also were the largest pre-registered out of district chapter. OK Chapter X joined LA D for dinner Saturday night. Dylan is the mascots for LA D, he and Rex have become good friends, so, now our chapters are getting to know each other. This is what makes going to rallies fun, meeting people and making friends. Next adventure for Chapter X is the Missouri District Rally in Branson, MO. Eighteen are pre-registered and perhaps we can get a few more to go. We will be having FUN. Hope you have a great month! 3 Chapter X Happenings by Steve and Carolyn Cotton Oklahoma Chapter X Assistant Chapter Directors June 2016 e X ceptionally Busy Month May truly was another e Xceptionally busy month for Chapter-X members! Every Saturday of the month found us, as well as other chapter members, representing Chapter-X in a variety of activities: May 2 nd, the Sadlers, Days and Cottons traveled to Lawton, OK, to participate in Chapter-L s monthly gathering. May 7 th, we participated in the Lake Thunderbird sack lunch ride sponsored by Chapter-E, along with members from Chapter-B and Chapter-E. May 13 th we, along with several other chapter members, attended Marie Wilson s retirement party. Congratulations Marie and thank you for your many years of service as a public school teacher - best wishes as you transition into retirement! May 14 th, after the monthly gathering, several of us rode to the OKC Ronald McDonald Houses to tour and deliver the18+ five gallon buckets of pull-tabs the chapter collected as our community service project. May Jack, Steve and I participated in the Texas District Rally in Temple, TX. Jack taught a bike and trailer course. Steve and I represented the chapter in off bike games, dress competitions and couple theme dress. Steve placed second in off bike games, we won 1 st in t-shirts (red), 2 nd in knit shirts (black polo) and 1 st in couple theme dress (western attire). May th nine chapter members (Sadlers, Oberholzers, Irons, Cottons and Jack) traveled to Harrison, AR for the Arkansas District Rally. Steve and I served as judges for the District Couple of the Year Selection. Jack presented two seminars and we all participated in dress competitions. We won 1 st in several dress categories, largest out of district preregistered chapter and Steve and I won 1 st in couple theme dress for our superman and super girl costumes. You ll have to see the pictures to believe it! This coming week will find us on the road again, as several chapter members prepare to attend the Missouri District Rally, June 2-5. I am sure we will have many stories and hopefully numerous chapter participation awards from this event to share with you in next month s newsletter. Ride Safe, and Keep Smiling! Steve and Carolyn 3

4 Notes from the Assistant Chapter Directors Bill and Linda Stevens June 2016 Bill and I enjoyed visits during May to Chapter E in Tulsa and Chapter K in Ponca City. We had a lot of FUN at their gatherings. I even won the 50/50 at Chapter K though Bill tried to claim it as his! Unfortunately we missed several of the X activities due to other obligations but we were glad we could contribute twenty gallons of pull tabs from the Perry community for the Ronald McDonald houses of Oklahoma City. Thank you Larry Cramton for picking them up! Have you ever heard Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Well, we ve had our share and now we are ready for a little bit of sunshine and June. Chapter X will start off June with the Missouri District Rally. This is always a great rally and look at where it s held Branson, Missouri. Lots to see and lots to do! Get those bikes ready for a beautiful ride through the Ozarks. The following week will be a visitation to Chapter M. Robert Jackson always makes it fun. He is known for entrapment. Just ask the guys who wore the tutus at M s anniversary party! Shiela Cramton will be retiring June 10 from OSU. I think she has plans to relax for a while after many years of work. Chapter X is invited to her retirement party. Marie Wilson has also retired after 30 years of teaching. Congratulations Marie! On June 18 th a ride is planned to Catfish Round Up at Prague, followed on the 21 st with recruitment and dinner at Rib Crib in Stillwater. On the 25 th we will head to Chapter K s Anniversary/Pajama Party. Don t forget to wear your UGLY house shoes! Robert Fritsche (Fritz) has arranged a Motorist Awareness Event at the West Walmart in Stillwater on June 26 th.sounds like a busy month. We hope you will participate in some or all of the events. Participation is the key to having fun! 4

5 Rider Education Oklahoma Chapter X Stillwater, OK Steve and Carolyn Cotton June 2016 Ride to be Seen Riding to be seen is essential to safe motorcycle riding. More than one half of all motorcycle accidents occur because the motorist simply did not see the motorcyclist coming. Motorists tend to look for other cars, not for motorcycles. In addition, motorcyclists are hard to see because of their small profile. Finally, because motorcycles accelerate quickly and motorcyclists are often changing lane positions to adjust to road conditions, drivers often misjudge motorcyclists and fail to predict their patterns. Therefore, when you are riding a motorcycle: Never assume that you are visible to a driver Ride where you can be seen Increase your visibility so that others will notice you A smart rider should Stand Out. Ride Bright and Be Seen. As a rider, you are more likely to Stand Out if you keep the following suggestions in mind: Use Color Select and wear a brightly colored helmet. Wear bright, contrasting clothing particularly on the upper part of your body. If you prefer darker colors, brighten them with fluorescent vests or straps. Add Reflectors Apply reflective materials to your helmet and the motorcycle itself. Adding reflectors is an effective and inexpensive way to stand out and increase your visibility. Brighten Headlights Headlights on at all times (which has been the standard in manufacturing for many years in the United States) will help ensure that you are noticed both day and night. Keep your headlights in optimal working condition and clean. Many people choose to use high beams during the day, and consider the use of even modulating headlights. Use Running Lights Running lights, whether used on the front, back, or side, improve visibility. Install running lights if you don t have them, and keep them in good operating condition. Remember: the front and sides of a motorcycle are much more important to your visibility than the rear of the cycle. To Stand Out, brighten those areas first. Aggressively Ride Safe! 6 MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATORS Robert & Linda Oberholzer June 2016 PERCEPTION: Force Feeding Fun By Bill & Dea Ann Gray Is GWRRA force feeding FUN to its members? We see it everywhere: Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge. Are you having FUN? Do you feel pressured into having FUN? BEWARE! The abuse will continue until we see a smile from your face! It s been said that GWRRA was asking too much of its members and taking the FUN out. We ve been told that we re trying too hard and that members know how to have FUN and don t need to be constantly reminded. The dictionary defines FUN as something that provides amusement and enjoyment. In GWRRA, FUN is a moving target! What is amusing and enjoyable to one may be boring and a waste of time for another. In our humble opinion, FUN is in the eye of the participant. Ask yourself, who is REALLY in control of your FUN? Is it National, Region, District, or YOU? Let s continue to ride safe and enjoy our friends and family! After all, at the end of the day, isn t that what we re all about? Remember our Motto, Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Chapter X Website, Check us out! We also have a Facebook page the Chapter enjoys. Please send me any news, articles and/or photos you would like to have in the newsletter! 8 BY THE BOOK By Jack Wagner Deputy Director Region H Trainer June 2016 By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: Raise Your Right Hand and Repeat After Me This month will be devoted to the Oath of Office. The Oath of Office should be administered to all incoming officers at the Chapter Gathering or other official Chapter event. In the case of District/Region Officers, it should be done during the annual convention (rally) or other major District/Region event. It should be done with great ceremony and its importance not minimized. The Oath of Office serves to formalize what the Officer has agreed to in signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Standing in front of the Chapter and verbalizing their commitment helps to solidify and seal that commitment as well as instill pride in the Officer. Following is the entire Oath of Office. GWRRA Oath of Office As an Officer and Volunteer Leader of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, I will do my best: To serve the Association by providing for its Members, in accordance with the Officer Handbook; To serve the Members, for whom I am responsible, in a manner befitting the Office; To assist my Senior Officers in the execution of their duties and responsibilities; To promote and support my Peers in a team atmosphere, working together for the benefit of the whole; To support all Divisions of the Association; To be positive in attitude and spirit; To lead by example while promoting an atmosphere of fun, safety and knowledge; To provide a succession of leadership for my office; I further pledge, during my term of office, to serve with pride and devotion, while upholding the Highest traditions and core values of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. The more you know, the better it gets! Jack 8

11 JOHN AND SHAWN IRONS We are John and Shawn Irons who live in Stillwater, OK. We have been married for 22 years and between us have 4 kids, and 9 grandkids. We have been a member of GWRRA and Chapter-X since In 2010, we became Assistant Chapter Directors and then in 2011, we became Chapter Directors. During that time, the chapter became 2 nd runner up for International Chapter of the Year Program. In 2013, we became the Oklahoma District Trainers. The latest position as of January 1 st of this year is Oklahoma District Membership Enhancement Coordinator. John was born and raised in California. He went to UCLA playing football and doing ROTC. In 1970, John entered the Army and served in Vietnam and Korea. In 1974, John joined the Stillwater Police Department as a police officer. John graduated from OSU in 1980 with a 2 nd degree and is an avid sports fan of OSU. In 2001, after 27 years as a police officer, he retired and became the current jail supervisor for the Stillwater Police Department. Shawn grew up in Bartlesville and graduated from College High School. She has worked as a fashion buyer for a local department store. She worked at Oklahoma State University as an administrative secretary for various deans of colleges. For a while, she worked as the secretary for the OSU President. John s great-grandfather fought in the Civil War. Did you know that Shawn s passion is collecting brooches? 12 Riding with REX I can't believe how busy my month with Jack Wagner has been. We started by attending the Hops Car Show in Perry where I spent the day in Chapter X's Motorist Awareness booth with Fritz. I saw a lot of beautiful cars and motorcycles. After going to Ditch Witch to mark the range for Sunday's trailering class, I rode home in Jack's '49 Mercury. The next day I rode back to Perry for the trailering class. The following Saturday we were off again in the Mercury to attend Coffee and Cars at Northpark Mall in OKC where Chapter J put on a Motorist Awareness event. After that it was off to El Reno for another car show as part of the Burger Day festival. They had the largest hamburger I've ever seen! We had to get up extra early the following Saturday to attend our Chapter gathering. Several of my friends from Chapter P came to visit. I wish I could have stayed in my jammies like they did since we had to get up so early. After the gathering we were off to Oklahoma City for a tour of the Ronald McDonald House facilities and to deliver all of the pull tabs Chapter X has collected. It is amazing to think about how much money those little things generate someone said we had collected around $5,000 worth of pull tabs. I was really touched by the service those Ronald McDonald House people provide. I can see why my Chapter family wanted to help them out. After a few days helping Jack trim shrubs around his yard, we were off to Temple, Texas for the Texas District rally. What a great time! For their western theme they had a jail, calf roping and shooting contests as well as all kinds of games. Steve and Carolyn won some of the dress competitions while Jack was teaching classes. Just a few days after getting home from Texas, and trimming more shrubs, we were off again this time for Harrison, AR to attend the Arkansas District Rally. I know Jack was really disappointed that we didn't get to go on the bike. The weather forecast scared the ones going with us away from riding, so we went in the car with Steve and Carolyn. Turned out the weather wasn't as bad as they thought; it barely rained at all. Jack kept whining all weekend about not having his bike, but I still had fun. I got to see my friend Dillon from LA and I won the out-of-district mascot contest. I know Dillon was disappointed he'll just have to get over it! Maybe he can win next time (that is if I'm not entered). Hopefully we'll get to go on the bike for the trip to Branson next weekend for the Missouri District rally. 12

16 18 Five Gallon Buckets! Wow! Everyone was so excited when we found out how many pull tabs Chapter X had collected in the past year for the Ronald McDonald House in Oklahoma City. After our gathering in May, we took out on our cycles with trailers to transport all these buckets. After donating the tabs, Chapter X was given tours of both McDonald Houses. We would like to extend our thanks to all who helped in this endeavor. It is truly amazing what you can do to help others just by asking your friends to help. Let s keep saving those tabs! 16 KEEP SAVING!!

17 Marie Wilson was joined by Gold Wing friends at her retirement party at her school on May 13th. Those able to attend were Ron & Char Sadler, John & Sarah Hoogendoorn, Steve Wilson, Cindi Hudgins and Steve & Carolyn Cotton.
