3 DIRECTOR S CORNER By Max Rowlett, Chapter Director Hello Angelwings, August has been an eventful month and we ll end it with a fun filled Wing Ding 39 down in Grapevine, TX, August 29 Sept. 2. We re checking our bikes and packing lists twice to make sure we re prepared. Do hope to see you there at the Gaylord Resort. On Sept. 28 Sept. 30, 2017 is our OK. District Rally and we have several rides and entertaining events that you are sure to enjoy. If you haven t already registered, please do so very soon. On a sad note we lost Rocky Swope, ACD of Chapter M-OK. We have lost one good Goldwinger and one heck of a good man. Please! Keep the Swope family in your prayers. Also, Kathryn Vitense, daughter of Eric & Krista Vitense continues to struggle with Schones Complex/heart problems and we rode as a chapter to an Indian Taco Dinner fund raiser for her. We had a good turn-out. Mary has more details on this later in the newsletter. After the delicious dinner, we rode over to the Duncan Braum s for ice cream. After Wing Ding 39 we will be back in Lawton for Labor Day, and have our monthly gathering as scheduled. Hope to see you there. Then on Tuesday, Sept. 5 we are riding to Bartlesville, OK for the Chapter G-OK Chapter Director installation ceremony. Due to the late hour and the distance most of us will over-night in a local hotel. There s always room for a couple more! Ride With us! We are planning a 3-day ride to Hutchinson, Kansas for October 13-15, I say 3 days but we will probably leave late on the 13 th. Some things to see are the Salt Mine, Amish settlement, and Ft. Larned Historic Site. Other stops may develop as we finalize our plans. Check your calendar, clear your schedule, and lets ride. That about does it for this article. Take Care and Ride Safe! Max Rowlett 3

5 Kathryn was born April 5th and was diagnosed with multiple Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). Since birth, Kathryn has undergone 2 open heart surgeries and has experienced a stroke. She has spent most of her young life at OU Medical Center in the Pediatric ICU. Her numerous stays have lasted from 36 hours to 3 weeks due to breathing and eating problems. Kathryn s parents, Eric and Krista Vitense, have made numerous round trips from Cache, OK to Oklahoma City (about 100 miles) with her. Her mom stays at the hospital with her, but her Dad has already exhausted all his vacation time, so any time he spends at the hospital is time he doesn t get paid. The medical bills, and food and fuel costs have become overwhelming. Kathryn s parents, her grandparents, (Keith and Pam Vitense), and her uncle Andy Vitense, are all longtime members of GWRRA, and part of the Chapter L family. Eric and Krista also have a 5 year old daughter, Bailyn, who attends our chapter gatherings and brightens everything up! We have asked our members for any donations of cash, fuel cards, etc., to help defray at least part of the costs of Kathryn s care. This will be an ongoing struggle for the family, as Kathryn will need more surgery when she recovers from her latest procedures. If anyone from any of our other chapters wish to help out, it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact our Chapter Director, Max Rowlett, at or him at Maxer50@aol.com. There is also an online T-shirt fundraiser at Go to Browse then Campaigns and search for Kathryn s Fight. Shirts are safety orange and have the logo that is displayed at the bottom of this page. Please keep the Vitense family in your thoughts and prayers! 5

9 GWRRA Region-H Oklahoma District Oklahoma Travelers Award Program 2017 Oklahoma Travelers Award is being presented by the district team to stress visiting fellow chapters, and so- cial activities from within their chapter and throughout our district. This should increase fun and fellowship statewide and provide chapters the ability to have fun rides within our great state of Oklahoma, including din- ner rides this year. No later than the 27th of each month, the Chapter Director or their designee will send a list of the members and guests by name and their chapter who visited another chapter gathering, Oklahoma rally, Chapter Anniversary or OK camp-out. Chapters will also receive 20 miles per member for each dinner ride, up to 5 members per ride (100 miles is the maximum for each dinner ride). There are no maximum amount of dinner rides per month only that they are on your monthly calendar. The sign-in sheets should be sent to the Oklahoma District Director for calculation each month. Examples: The Chapter Director, 3 members and 1 guest from Chapter-E attend the gathering for Chap- ter-x. So you have a total of 5 people. You look at the mileage chart and see that from Tulsa to Stillwater is 79 miles. You multiply 5 X 79 = 395 miles. You have scheduled on your calendar a chapter dinner ride to Braum s. You and 4 members ride to Braum's. You multiply 5 X 20 miles = 100 miles credit for travel. You cannot receive more than 100 miles per chapter dinner ride regardless of how may go on the ride. Ten members from Chapter-P go to Chapter-B Anniversary. You will get the miles as shown for going to a gathering. We will start the travel award as of January 1, The presentation for the Oklahoma travelers award plaque will be presented at the district financial meeting in January B E G I J K L M N P X Campout Rally OK Ch-B Shawnee Ch-E Tulsa Ch-G Bartlesville Ch-I Bixby Ch-J Edmond Ch-K Ponca City Ch-L Lawton Ch-M Muskogee Ch-N Norman Ch-P Claremore Ch-X Stillwater OK Campout OK Rally Muskogee John & Shawn Irons Oklahoma District Director 9

10 Rider Education Notes By Richard Mears Taken from the Ride Apart website: Riding a motorcycle is dangerous. Luckily, bikes also give you the best possible tools to avoid crashing incredibly powerful brakes, obstruction-free vision, excellent handling and very grippy tires. Here s how to use those tools, and your very own brain, to avoid this common motorcycle accident. Motorcycle Safety: Want to reduce your odds of dying in a crash? Get educated. New riders should complete a basic rider course. Safety gear doesn t just help prevent injury in a crash, it can also make riding more comfortable, put you in better control of your bike, and help you be seen by other drivers. Bright colors on your helmet and jacket/suit will help car drivers see you, potentially avoiding this accident detailed below. A Car Turns Left In Front Of You The most common motorcycle accident. A car fails to see you or judges your speed incorrectly, turning in front of you at an intersection. Blame inattention, distraction, blind spots and even psychology; a driver looking for cars perceives merely an absence of cars, not the presence of a motorcycle. How To Avoid It: Simple, you just need to see it coming. Part of your job as a motorcyclist is to develop a precognitive sixth sense. Look for signs that could indicate someone may turn in front of you: a car is at an intersection waiting to turn, there s a gap in traffic near an intersection, driveway or parking lot. In either situation, slow down, cover your brakes and get ready to take evasive action. Yes, you do need to take something as innocuous as a car waiting in a turn lane as a major and immediate threat to your life. You also need to account for objects outside of your vision. Gaps in traffic indicate the possibility of someone coming through that gap, even if you can t see them. Again, MAJOR THREAT, PREPARE FOR EVASIVE ACTION. And once you ve identified said threat, you can work it through levels of severity. Is the driver clearly able to see you, without obstruction from their window pillars, trees or signs? Is that person actually looking? Are they looking at you? How are they situated in the road? What is their speed? Where are their wheels pointing? Look at their wheels, not the car they ll give you the first clue of movement. During all this, also be aware of what s behind and to your side. Should you need to take evasive action, you ll need to know your routes of escape. It s no good braking in time to avoid a turning car, only to be swatted from behind by a tailgating SUV. What s the road surface like? Is it going to be able to handle the full force of your brakes or are you going to lock them? You do know how to use the full ability of your brakes, right? Under no circumstances should you lay the bike down. Your best chance of survival comes from shedding as much speed as possible pre-collision, and you re going to be able to do that best with the bike completely upright, using both brakes. Even if you only have time to lose 10 or 20 mph, that could be the difference between going home with bruises and going home at all. 10
