Chattin with Char August Hello Chapter X Friends Our condolences go to Cindi Hudgins and Carolyn Cotton as they both lost their mothers in July. will continue to be with them. Our hearts and prayers Several of Chapter X members made a trip to New Mexico and rode the Chama Train. It sounded like a perfect trip except for the bike trouble Fritz had. David Hudgins is very good about journaling and sending it by to those of us who are not with them makes us feel like we are there. They also had some good pictures of the trip. He also wrote an article for this newsletter starting on page fourteen. Eleven us made it to Eureka Springs for the Arkansas District Rally. We won several of the competitions they had which were lots of fun. They did something different at their rally. They gave us play money in our packets and we could earn more money by participating in games and taking part in the rally events. We used that play money to bid on contingency prizes. It was fun. Before the weekend was over, Marie Wilson joined us for a while on Saturday, and later that evening, David and Cindi arrived, spent the night and rode home with us on Sunday. The last weekend of July, Ron and I attended the Sadler family reunion which is held every two years. His aunt, Jackie Campbell who is 97 and his uncle, Bayard Sadler who is 87 are the last living children of his Grandfather Francis Sadler. There were 103 of us attending and that number was way down as lots of family could not come for some reason or another. The month of August looks to be another busy one for Chapter X ending with many from our chapter headed to Grapevine for Wing Ding. Sure, hope the weather is as nice as it has been the last few days. It is August in Oklahoma so who knows what the temperatures will be! Have a fantastic month! Char 3

Oklahoma District Directors John & Shawn Irons July 2017 Change Coming to GWRRA Well if you have not heard, we have some changes coming to the structure of GWRRA. Nobody likes change as we don t know what is really going to happen. First we want to say that you must look at the changes as a positive thing and work to make this happen. Not everyone is going to like the changes but we must work to keep our motto of Friends Fun Safety Knowledge alive. We are going to highlight some of the changes that we received from GWRRA President Anita Alkire in a zoom call. The chapter director position will remain the same. The responsibilities will become more of a coordinator for fun, activities, rides and more fun. We want the gathering to become more of a social gathering not a business meeting. You can do all of your business stuff at a planning meeting. New officer position of Chapter Ride Coordinator. It s all about the ride. We want someone to help focus the planning of all variety of rides to suit your chapter. Remember it the ride, ride, ride. Chapter Member Enhancement and Social Coordinator. This person helps plan fun events and works closely with the ride coordinator to incorporate a fun ride with fun social events. We are putting social back into getting together. There will not be a chapter rider educator. The CD and Chapter Ride Coordinator will work with the District ride coordinator in keeping them up to date and aware of the goings on with the rider education program. For the Oklahoma District only, we suggest you have your current chapter ride educator become an assistant ride coordinator with the focus of encouraging safety, i.e. T-Clocks, group riding techniques, safety clothes and more. They can also assist the District Rider Educator on the levels program. We will have a District Ride Coordinator who is an officer of Rider Education There will be no more Regions. So Region-H will be gone effective Jan 1, There will be (we hope) more of a straight line communication between Team GWRRA, districts and chapters. We hope that we will have better communication betweenteam GWRRA (the president of GWRRA) and the district and chapter members. Couple of the year program will be up to the district level. We might see in the future area couples but no more true international couple of the year. For right now everything will stay the same until next year. We have to keep the recognition of our couples alive in the COY program. 4

Chapter of the year program will probably be up to the district level. Again with no Region-H. We will not see a true international chapter of the year program award. There is no more of just closing a chapter by the chapter. We will now work from the top and look at all the ways that we have to keep that chapter open. This is the charge that is put on all district directors when we have struggling chapters. Last but not least the membership dues will be going up effective August 1, Membership will be $55 for an individual, $65 for a family and $30 for a life membership. We have been really lucky as membership dues have not gone up for 19 years so it was due. There is much more and we all know that things can change in a heartbeat. Again stay positive to these changes. We will be working with all chapters to help in this transition of GWR- RA and know it will work for all of us to increase the fun that GWRRA was designed for some 40 years ago. Please go to the following site to read the complete Why Change the GWRRA Structure. This will give you a really good answer to what is happening in GWRRA. Remember it is all about the social time together and the ride pdf?v=2 Here is the restructure chart of GWRRA effective Jan 1, 2018 as shown below We want to apologize in advance if we misinterpreted anything in the change of structure of GWRRA. This is just how we understood the message coming out of Team GWRRA. Lastly, Shawn and I will really need everyone s help to make this work, so please feel free to contact us with questions, suggestions and general ideas to help make GWRRA and to the Oklahoma District a better fun while riding our motorcycle. 6 Rider Education Oklahoma Chapter X Stillwater, OK Steve and Carolyn Cotton Senior Chapter Educators August, 2017 Hot Weather Preparation If you ve been riding motorcycles very long, you probably have a good idea on the gear you ll need from listening to my previous talks - helmet, eye protection, long sleeves (such as a riding jacket), full-fingered gloves, long pants, and over the ankle boots. We call this ATGATT for All The Gear, All The Time. If you re not sure exactly what you might need, consult your Chapter Educator or some other experienced riders for more specific details. You re also probably thinking about extras such as rain gear, heated gear and anything else that might help protect you while you re exposed to the different elements during your ride. not You re probably thinking about how to manage all of this on a blazing summer day, when the heat radiates both from the atmosphere and from the pavement, and a brutal sun beats down. To be fair, many veteran riders who are accustomed to cooler climates or mild weather rides may not be familiar with the best way to approach a hot-weather ride, either. If you re going to be riding a motorcycle in a hotter climate, you need to carefully consider your hot-weather riding gear, and your best hot-weather riding practices. Make Sure You re Wearing the Right Gear Dress in layers. As strange as it may sound, more is still better when riding in hot weather. While you re riding, you ll experience a wind-chill effect, so you don t want to dress too lightly. When you stop, remove layers as needed. Stay cool with a moisture-wicking layer, as the cover will retain moisture and help your body cool itself. It also protects you from direct sun and wind. Many people recommend a full-face vented helmet. This will help keep that hot air off your face. Be sure your helmet is DOT approved, and is less than seven (7) years old, because helmets do not last forever! I also recommends getting a mesh or vented motorcycle jacket. Not only will it help keep you cool, it will protect you if you should go down. A cooling motorcycle vest, which you soak in water, wring out, and wear underneath a vented jacket, is also recommended. It s the closest thing you ll get, they say, to air-conditioning on a bike. (Full cool suits are also available.) Mesh or vented motorcycle gloves. Vented motorcycle pants made of breathable material. 6

A pair of good motorcycle boots (don t forget moisture-wicking socks, so your feet will stay dry and cool). Another Cool Technique. If you re wearing a T-shirt underneath your motorcycle jacket, you can soak it in water, wring it out and put it back on underneath that vented jacket. It s not as fancy as a cooling vest or cool suit, but it ll give you an extra blast of A/C on an uncomfortably hot day. Adjust Your Riding for Hot Summer Days Route planning. It is a good idea in choosing higher-elevation routes if possible; if there s no alternative, adjust your timing so you re riding in the cooler mornings and evenings rather than in the heat of mid-day. Also, it is recommended to choose routes with shade (i.e. not the freeway), routes free of stoplights, and routes free of construction or traffic jams. If you do get stuck, turn off your engine, especially if you have an air-cooled bike. Hydration. You can use a hydration bladder a backpack-style reservoir that allows a motorcyclist to drink without using his or her hands. Hydration backpacks can be filled with water, ice or sports drinks. Be sure you have some method of hydration, such as a water bottle or Butler cup-type source of water. Take advantage of evaporative cooling. Many people recommend wearing motorcycle gear specially designed to be protective yet well-ventilated; combine that with light layers underneath. And, don t forget the sunscreen. Protect all exposed skin, especially on the backs of your hands, on your wrists, and on the back of your neck. Cell phones and umbrellas - Bring both! If you break down, you ll want to be able to call for assistance and give yourself some shade while you wait for help to arrive. Don t forget to keep your cell phone charged or have a charger with you that you can use on your bike. Extra motor oil and coolant. Have this on hand, in case your bike overheats. Keep an even more careful eye on the road. Patches of oil can be extremely hot and slippery on a summer day. Avoid them. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Watch yourself, and your companions, because these are dangerous conditions. Keep your CPR/First Aid certification current in case you would need it. Aggressively Ride Safe! Steve and Carolyn Cotton Chapter X Rider Educators Save those pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. It costs nothing to do this! 7

MOTORIST AWARENESS Robert Fritsche Chapter MA Coordinator August, 2017 My insurance company sent me this article I thought you might enjoy. We are always looking for ways to be noticed by the motoring public. I would like to thank Progressive Insurance for being involved with motorcycle safety. LumiLor Helps Motorcyclists Get Noticed Motorcyclists care about two things above all: Safety, and making their bikes look amazing. It s rare that one product can serve both purposes. But that s exactly what Darkside Scientific s LumiLor Electroluminescent Coating System does. As its slightly cumbersome name suggests, LumiLor is paint that lights up. It s every bit as amazing as it sounds. LumiLor is called electroluminescent because the paint emits a soft glow in response to an electric current passing through it. When used for a custom motorcycle paint job, the bike s battery provides the power. But, it can be applied to virtually any object that would take a coat of regular paint: guitars, furniture, skateboards, ceilings and walls.the possibilities are limitless. When applied to something the size of a motorcycle helmet, a couple of nine-volt batteries provide enough power to surround a rider s head in a halo of beautiful light. LumiLor comes in white, green, radioactive green, blue, blue-green, and orange, but the colors can be mixed to create almost any hue. And like ordinary paint, it s durable, protective and, when applied over a regular black base coat, invisible until the power is turned on. For motorcyclists, its appeal is obvious who wouldn t want to ride through the night with a glowing dragon, wizard or eagle on his or her fuel tank? Bat an electroluminescent paint job offers another benefit, as well: By making riders more visible, it also helps keep them safe. Because a simple failure to see motorcycles is behind so many accidents, anything that can help a rider get noticed is a godsend. And getting noticed is what LumiLor is all about. An invention that enhances a rider s safety as it turns the heads of everyone it passes? We suspect that with LumiLor, Darkside Scientific has a very bright futured ahead of it. Stay Hydrated, Enjoy your Ride, and Be Safe! 9

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OKLAHOMA DISTRICT MOTORIST AWARENESS COORDINATOR, KAY SMITH As we are in the heat of the summer months I want to remind you to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. It doesn t matter if you are on a bike/trike or in a car you need to keep the fluids coming to help stay cooler and not letting the heat get the best of you. Also reminding you that if you do anything to promote Motor Awareness by talking to anyone, showing your pride as a rider, a bike show, recruitment table, or handing out flyers to people you meet anywhere. Please send me a small letting me know with the name, date, number of people you met with, event, and how many flyers you gave out. The more you do and let me know then that person can get recognition from GWRRA and we are all winners. We want everyone to know we are there and to be seen and stay safe. I also have new Motor Awareness handouts to be given out. Let me know if you want any of them and I will be happy to get them to you. You have to let me know so keep up with the information on what I going on in your Chapters and stay safe. Have fun and spread the word that we are out there riding the roads and sharing the roads. All GWRRA members are invited to the Chapter-G gathering on September 5, 2017 at 7:00pm at Montana Mikes in Bartlesville to join in the installation of Bob & Sallie Powell, new Chapter Directors! 10

ICE CREAM SOCIAL July 29, Lone Chimney We had delicious homemade ice creams Peach, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Vanilla, with lots of toppings. And if the ice cream wasn t enough, we also enjoyed German Chocolate, Lemon, and Orange bundt cakes, and cookies. And that was just desserts. Grilled hot dogs and all the trimmings were side items. After filling our bellies, we enjoyed playing games and catching up with all the trips that everyone had taken lately. 13

RED RIVER TRIP BY David Hudgins Jimmy and Nedra, David and Cindi, Steve and Carolyn, Larry and Shiela, Jack, Bob and Janis, Randy and Linda, and Fritz. We left Yale in rain but ran out of it before we got to I-35. The temperature was good until we got to Slapout. Hottest I saw was 92, then clouds started covering us again and I thought we were going to get wet before we got to Clayton. But we made it to the hotel, and across the street to get pizza at the Loves store and back before the rain started. We went west out of Boise City and north through the Black Mesa area. It was the first time for me, and it was pretty. The road wraps around the mesas and up and down, in and out of the many valleys before opening up into a big valley surrounded by the mesas. Fritz blew a fork seal so we are headed to Raton in the morning to try and get it fixed. We ate breakfast at the hotel, Cindi washed our trike and trailer, we had ran through some red mud In western Oklahoma road construction. The result was a decorated trailer. Then we headed north to Raton. We found the Honda shop, a shotgun building built way back in the day. He opened late, his mechanic thought he had the day off and he didn't have any parts. They found parts in Farmington, but wouldn't be open until Wednesday. So we continued on to Chama. We stopped for gas in La Veta, the town was having its Fourth of July parade and it was just finishing up. We stopped at the corner gas station, old time pay inside, city mechanic type of operation. A mule deer came trotting up through the station while we were filling up our bikes and walked down Main Street. Town was packed, so when we parked our bikes while using the restrooms, the mechanic came out and asked me to move our trike because they still had a business to run. So on to Alamosa, at a good Mexican restaurant that had a buffet. Then on to Chama arriving around 6pm. The highway ran along side of the narrow gage train tracks for several miles. No air conditioning in the rooms, but by morning we were all pulling covers as the low was around 50 degrees. Bob and Janis were on their way back from Red River, and didn't get back until we were eating at the cafe so we missed them. Off to bed, no refreshments, we were all worn out. 14

The steam engine narrow gage train was full enough that they had to add an eighth car. When they do that they have to use two engines which is rare. One was built in 1903 and the other was built in One of the engines that they were using belonged to Gene Autry at one time. He donated it to them. Railroad volunteers refurbished it and they use it for the train rides. Several movies have been made with engine 463. When we got to the bridge, they stopped the train. They have never taken two engines across the bridge at one time because of their weight the bridge can't hold them. So they unhook the first engine, proceed across the bridge then the second engine pulls the train across, stops, and the first engine is reattached. Almost every window on the train was down, when we made a short radius 180 turn. The engineer proceeded to blow off condensate and soaked everyone setting on the inside of the train. You should have seen the riders scramble! Once we reached the summit, the first engine was unhooked, and we proceeded on. We went through two tunnels, several bridges and saw lots of deer. The 64 miles took 6 hours and 45 minutes, which included the lunch stop and ended in Antinito. The trained crossed the roadway several times. We marveled (and waved) at all the people at the train crossings. They all had their cameras out and taking pictures. Some kept hopping forward to the next crossing taking more pics. The bus ride back took us one hour and arrived at 6 at the train station in Chama, supper was at Subway. We met the Days' son, Mike, daughter in law, Heidi, and their two knuckle head boys, (as papa says) Xander and Zeke at the train station! They were able to get train tickets on our car. The pleasure was all ours! Zeke kept us entertained! 15

Monday we had breakfast at Nina's again, a hidden gem. The food was good and very reasonable, served by a gun toting waiter, who just happened to also be the owner. Janis and Bob came to see us off. We left town and headed south to highway US 64, which took us toward Taos. This road is a great ride, winding up and over the mountains and down into the desert valley around Taos. We stopped at the Rio Grand Gorge for a break. The various road side stands were visited and some made the trek across the bridge to view the gorge close up. We continued on to Red River, our lunch destination, and browsed through the various shops. After a couple of hours we continued on up the mountain to Eagles Nest, then east over the top and down the other side to Clayton, our stop for the night. We checked in at the Hotel Eklund built in The hotel was booked full. We ate dinner at the restaurant with its old west decor and full menu, no one left hungry. We had planned on eating there but was told all reservations were full. But, the lady who had talked to Cindi on the phone and made room reservations for us had went ahead and put us down for dinner because she knew it was our first time there and would want to eat there. We went exploring downtown walking to the Herzstein Memorial museum that was closed, then back to the hotel where a street dance was just starting. They had the street in front of the hotel blocked off and a big band just starting up. Steve, Carolyn and Jack had a birds eye view as their room was on the third story over looking the band. We watched for awhile. A set of twins about 3 years old entertained us with their country dancing. The rooms were old fashion but very clean. The highlight was the air conditioner that was mounted in the ceiling right above the head of the bed. The cold air came out and dropped right on top of you. And the room was cool when we checked in! We snuggled and slept very well. The music continued well into the night, poor Cottons and Jack. Tuesday we ate a good breakfast in the restaurant, we actually ate supper last night in the bar. The furnishings were very plush but worn and from the early 1900's. We had pulled our bikes and trikes around front of the hotel before we ate breakfast to make a quick get away. The owner saw them and caught us as we were about to leave and asked if he could take a picture of us behind our cycles. Seems he had a picture of the old cowboys on the front porch and had taken a picture of some old cars doing the same. He wanted to add our trikes and bikes to the collection to be put on the hotels web page. We headed southeast out of town on highway 87, Jack leading the way across the Texas panhandle to Oklahoma. I had never been this way, and with all the turns and small towns it seemed to go by faster. Lunch was in Canadian, Texas, at the local Texas stop sign. Then on into Oklahoma, over the Highway 51 and across to I35 where good byes and hugs were given. Four days of riding and one day on the Chama Steam train making fond memories to recall later and smile! 16

JIMMY, NEDRA & FRITZ CONTINUE ON FROM CHAMA After leaving everyone in Chama we went to Four Corners, then Tuba City. The next day we hit the Grand Canyon, then to Page, Arizona. We toured the dam and went to Lees Ferry where we experienced the hottest temperature of 117 degrees. The next morning at 6:30 we took off for the tour of Antelope Canyon, Kanab and Zion Park. At that point we went on North to 14 over to Cedar City. We stopped for lunch at Duck Creek and got caught in a rainstorm with some sleet. The temperature dropped to 47 degrees. From there we went to Torrey, Utah, for Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef. We then headed to Moab, Glen Canyon and Canyon Land. Here are all the sites we were able to see: Four Corners Grand Canyon Glen Canyon Canyon of the Ancients Zion Arches Canyonland Capitol Canyon Lees Ferry Antelope Canyon Page Tollride Silverton Durango 17

Steve and Marie Wilson We have been riding motorcycles since shortly after we met in High School. We got our first bike in the summer of 1968, and have enjoyed riding ever since. We owned a succession of bikes until Marie got her first Goldwing trike in At that point we started riding both bikes on trips around the United States. Shortly after buying the trike we joined Chapter A in Ada, until it folded. In 2009 we moved to Stillwater and shortly thereafter, joined Chapter X. We served as Assistant Chapter Directors, and then Chapter Directors for 3 years, during which time we were honored to lead the greatest chapter in the world to International Chapter of the Year status in Another honor we received was being awarded the Senior Director Award, followed by the Merit Award at WingDing We now serve as Assistant District Directors for Oklahoma. We are both Level IV riders and University Trainers. We have ridden in all the lower 48 states, and found interesting things in each. Our most enjoyable trip was around 2 weeks from Oklahoma all the way to Glacier National Park and a lot in between. We were in awe as we traveled through Yellowstone National Park. We have continued our travels, including a three-week trip with the Jefferies, where we visited 31 eastern states. Marie retired from teaching a year ago, and has since been teaching private piano and voice lessons. Her retirement has allowed us to travel in the Spring and Fall now. 18

Riding with REX Hello Friends I went to the Kansas District Rally with Jack Wagner and came home with Char Sadler. We were supposed to leave for Raleigh, NC early Monday morning, when we got to Cushing later that evening, Ron said he did not think I should make the trip. I was heartbroken but he had my best interest in mind. The little dog, Chiquita, did not get to go either. Ron said he would take me to the Arkansas District Rally when we got back. I stayed at the house and rested as we have been going nonstop this year. Ron and Char got home on Sunday night and we left for Eureka Springs, AR on Thursday headed to the Arkansas District Rally. I enjoyed the rally but they did not have a contest for mascots this year so I just sat on the pride table and talked to people as they came by. It was a good rally but it was hot. I suppose that is what you would expect for July. I thought I was going to the Sadler Reunion with Ron and Char but after we talked about it in length I decided I would stay home. There were going to be lots of little babies there that would want to chew on me, drag me around, pull my tail and other things that would irritate me so I just wanted to stay home! I am not sure who I am supposed to be with this month as we were not at the last Gathering. Tonight, we are going to Braum s in Cushing, I will take my suitcase just in case the ones I need to be with are there. I just love the life I lead, being with all these different families. Here I am in Arkansas looking good! I showed off my suitcase full of all my shirts! They didn t judge out of district pride tables, but we still participated. 20 During the early morning of July 12 th, 2017, Stillwater Police K-9 Zena was found to be suffering from an acute illness that unfortunately led to her death. Zena had faithfully served the citizens of Stillwater and members of the police department since the fall of Zena was 8 years old at the time of her passing. Stillwater Police K-9 s are used in many ways throughout our community and the surrounding communities. Stillwater Police K-9 s are trained to locate and alert to the odor of illegal narcotics in vehicles, schools, buildings and other locations. K-9 s are utilized to locate and apprehend dangerous suspects by conducting open field searches, building searches and tracking. The Stillwater K-9 s assist surrounding law enforcement agencies including the OSU Police, Payne County Sheriff s Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. In addition to their role as police officers Stillwater Police K-9 s build relationships with the community through education and public presentations. Upon learning of Zena s untimely passing citizens began inquiring about how they could help the police department purchase a new K-9. The cost associated with purchasing a K-9 capable of meeting the demands of a Stillwater Police K-9 is approximately $15,000. Several fund raisers are underway. Donations can be hand delivered or mailed to the Stillwater Police Department. Checks should be made out to the City of Stillwater with K-9 Fund in the memo line. All donations are tax deductible and will only be used for the new K-9 and related expenses. Contact Sergeant Royce Stephens with any questions (405) THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT NOTICE: Chapter X has decided to donate $200 from Chapter X s treasury for this fund raiser. Individual donations for this worthwhile project will be collected at our August gathering if anyone would like to do so. Make checks to City of Stillwater, K9 Fund. 20
