Chattin with Char July, 2016 Hello Chapter X Friends June has been a hot month for our busy chapter on our bikes/trikes and a few cars. We did one out of district rally, two chapter visitations, one chapter anniversary, one recruitment, one motor awareness event, toured Guy Cooper Museum, three dinner rides, one gathering, and a planning meeting. No wonder I am tired. Had a great time at the Missouri District Rally in Branson. Sure was glad we could walk to all the places to eat as the rain was a problem at times. Unlike the month before when we were all in cars, this time all twenty were on bikes/trikes! On Saturday morning Branson received over three inches of rain, of course it did not stop us from doing anything, as we just put on the rain gear and got out the umbrellas. We did quite well in the competitions too. We came home with six first places and one second place in the out of district category. We were also the largest out of district pre-registered chapter. Missouri is always a great rally; the people are extremely friendly and there is so much to do in Branson. We have all booked our rooms for next year. Chapter K s anniversary was a blast. We got to wear our pajamas and house shoes, my kind of dress. We were served breakfast foods which were very tasty. Linda Stevens won second in the decorated house shoes. They were cute with the razor, toothbrush, toilet paper roll, band aids and she said the paper stuck to the bottom had paint on it but the brown looked suspiciously like something else! Ron Sadler won the 50/50 and to this date I have not seen any of that money. Our motor awareness event was hot but the thirteen of us were enjoying the people. When the skies turned dark to the west we quickly checked the weather on our phones to see we had lots of rain headed our way. Did not take us long to get all of the papers boxed, canopy down, table put way and banners bagged. Six of us decided we had enough time before the rain to grab a bite at the Mexican restaurant just down the street. At the restaurant we kept an eye on the weather on the phones and it looked like we just had enough time to get home. Wrong, as we exited the restaurant the rain started and the bottom fell out. Poor Robert was a drowned rat by the time he got to Perry. Ron, I, Jimmy and Nedra ran out of the worst by the time we got out of Stillwater and made it home by maybe ten minutes before it all caught up with us. The moral of the story is not to believe anything you cannot see with your own eyes as the weather on the phone lies. Hope you have a good month! Char Sadler Chapter X Director 3

Rider Education Oklahoma Chapter X Stillwater, OK Steve and Carolyn Cotton July 2016 Tips for Riding Cool In these high-heat conditions, I wear a long-sleeved, mesh jacket (like I always do). I know that it seems counterintuitive to wear long sleeves, but as long as you have air moving over the fabric, it will work great. Just think of the evaporation process. As sweat evaporates, it takes your body heat with it. Moisture-wicking material also draws sweat away from the body to be evaporated through the shirt, aiding the cooling process. Conventional materials can simply trap sweat next to the skin, limiting evaporation. The key to these materials is air flow. If there is no air movement over the material, then the shirt will become oversaturated, and sweat will not evaporate. When air temperatures are high and the reverse wind chill is in effect, wetting down clothing will increase the amount of moisture near the skin. This moisture is now available to be evaporated, drawing heat from your body. Although much of the evaporation will be caused by the high air temperature itself, there will be enough water on the skin to reduce the amount you need to sweat. Some techniques for wetting down include neck bandanas (particularly those with water-absorbing crystals), wetting down a regular cotton t-shirt, or even pouring water directly into your helmet. Keep Hydrated Now that we know how much water the body needs while riding in high temperatures, we can deduce that staying hydrated is one of the most important things to do while on the road. The difference between covering up or not is your body losing about 20 oz. / hour and 40 oz. / hour, respectively. Here are some tips to help ensure hydration. Wear a Camelback: For longer rides, some wear a camelback-type water bag on their back. They may fill theirs with half ice and half water before the ride, and those cooling sips do add up to make the difference. If you re doing it right, you ll run out of water in the camelback before your next gas stop. Carry Plenty of Water: I carry a large Butler cup of water in my motorcycle on longer days of riding. Be wary of taking in ice-cold water too fast, it can cause an upset stomach. Swish it about your mouth to bring its temperature up a bit before swallowing. Urine Test: Go for the clear. Dehydration is not something you can tough out it will harm you if you don t remedy it. Deep-colored urine and headaches are early signs that you are in need of water. If you stop sweating, heat stroke is not far behind. Drink water often! 4

Only Water is Water: Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which cause you to urinate and lose more water. When it s hot, steer clear of sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol. Also, never drink alcohol directly before or during your ride. Tar Snakes Tar snakes are a hazard for both motorized and pedaled two-wheeled vehicles and their riders. Many states use a tar-like material to fill in cracks on the roads; these can become quite slippery when it s hot. Avoid them if possible. Treat them the same as railroad tracks by crossing them at 90 degrees and in an upright position. Slow down if your rear tire starts sliding out from under you stay calm and the tire will grip again. Don t try to over-correct, keep your line, keep your head up, grip lightly, and keep your body steady for when the gripping action returns. If there s a large patch of tar snakes and there is no way to avoid them all, I will sometimes pull in the clutch and treat the obstacle as I would a large patch of ice, coast through it, and after ensuring that the rear wheel is clear, re-engage the engine. This helps to keep from slipping. Riding in really hot weather is not bad when you re prepared for it. Remember to hydrate, keep your skin covered, and avoid hazards. Don t let the heat weaken you to the point where you re not fully attentive to traffic conditions and the road. Basically, you must consider how your body will deal with the heat. Reducing the effects of convection, through covering up and wetting down, will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through evaporation. Covering up in the heat will keep you cool. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent headaches caused by sun glare. And don t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear may leave the skin exposed. Aggressively Ride Safe! Steve and Carolyn Cotton Chapter X Rider Educators 5

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATORS Robert & Linda Oberholzer July 2016 HINTS FOR SMART TOURING Since many of us are getting ready for Wing Ding and extending that to other places we thought we might make a few suggestions to keep all our members safe AND sane along the way. There is nothing like the feeling of loading up and heading out on a big motorcycle trip, but be prepared! Our educator and Motorist Awareness Coordinator do a good job of keeping us aware of what we should be doing with the weather, cycle preparedness and watching out for those four wheelers but here are some other things to check off your list! Is your driver s license ready to expire open that wallet and see! Take out some cash and hide somewhere on the bike. Might even make copies of your driver s license and medical information and store in a different place. Carry spare cycle and trailer keys! Hide them on your bike with a zip-tie or duct tape or better yet, trade keys with a traveling companion. Make sure your tools are what you need on a long trip; Eat at weird times. Everyone eats around 8 am, noon and 6 pm. Don t be hungry at those times if you want to get in and out quickly. Don t forget your camera/smart phone, meds, sunglasses, Gold Book, binoculars, sunblock, snacks, and WATER. Make sure your First Aid Kit is in top condition. Check the weather each night and have rain gear, cooling jackets, etc. handy if needed the next day. On a long trip, take a day out of every week, to relax and do nothing. Time is the ultimate luxury and can mean the difference between a vacation and an endurance run. When you are rested, everything is better! Above all, watch out for your fellow cyclists. We all depend on each other. We can always take another trip if we are healthy! Let s stay that way. Robert & Linda Chapter X Website, Check us out! We also have a Facebook page the Chapter enjoys. Please send me any news, articles and/or photos you would like to have in the newsletter! LINDA OBERHOLZER Chapter X Newsletter Editor firstos@att.net 6

MOTORIST AWARENESS Robert Fritsche Chapter MA Coordinator July, 2016 Summer Riding The summer riding season is once again with us. It seems to have hit a little sooner and with a bit more vengeance this year. When the temperature gets above 98 degrees Fahrenheit the only way for the body to regulate the inner core and brain temperature is through perspiration and evaporation. As this process kicks into high gear your body loses or requires over a quart of water per hour. With a mere 5 to 7 degree increase in temperature your body loses or requires 300% more water per hour. So you can see that in the time it takes to use one tank of gas, you can be in serious danger, and you can t replenish in 5 to 15 minutes. There are three rules that you have to follow when you out in these levels of heat. Hydration! Hydration! Hydration! If you know you are going on a ride in these kind of temperatures, start drinking water at least 24 hours in advance. It is not a bad thing to have to go to the restroom often. You can get rid of it a lot easier than you can replace it. If you are on multi-day rides, drink as much water as you can while at rest. It is also a good idea to have several sport drinks throughout the day and evening. Cooling vest are a good piece of equipment for rides like this. Use them! Remember soda pop, tea, and coffee are all dehydrators. So have fun, ride safely, and God Speed. Fritz 7

BY THE BOOK By Jack Wagner Deputy Director Region H Trainer July 2016 By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: The Officer's Handbook The Officer's Handbook was written especially for the Operations Officers of GWRRA, however it is readily available and beneficial to all Members. It used to be known as the Officer's Guidebook, however the name was changed in 2010 to better reflect the intent of being the recipe book of how things are to be done. The previous title gave the impression that it was just a 'suggestion' and need not necessarily be followed. When coupled with the Officer's Certification Program (OCP), it will help you better understand the how s and why s of GWRRA. There are good reasons for the policies laid out in the Officer's Handbook knowing and understanding those reasons makes it a lot easier to explain why the policies should be adhered to. The Officer Handbook is a valuable information resource, however it is only one source of information that can be of help. Your appointing Officer and the OCP are also important resources. Some things may be more important to you than others, depending on where you are in the process of organizing your Team. Constant referral will bring new ideas to you as you need them. It is recommended that you access the Handbook online rather than keeping a printed copy. That way you will always have the latest information should there be any changes. While the Handbook provides the backbone of how things are to be done, it still allows for you to utilize your personal talents and abilities. Your office should take on your personality, because we all have our special way of attaining our Members goals. Your talents, combined with the continuing assistance that comes from other members of the Operations Team, will help you to help all of us. Help us continue to make this the BEST Association possible. Help us exceed our motto, FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE. Help us be more than our Members expect. The more you know, the better it gets! Jack Wagner Region H Trainer 8

Membership Enhancement Coordinators By John & Shawn Irons Oklahoma District MEC s July 2016 You Need to Participate Hello to all our fellow Oklahoma GWRRA district members. Here we are at the end of June. Seems like it was just yesterday when the temperatures were below just above freezing and we were just trying to stay warm. Now we are in the riding season and it won t be long before we are raking the leaves. Time is passing way too quickly. It seems like the older we get, the faster time passes. This month, we had the opportunity to go to Chapter M in Muskogee. What a great, excited chapter. You know it is fun when you can have 16 members and 23 guests. Great job Chapter Director Robert Jackson and his team. We are so excited to see all of the chapters that are taking part in Travel Award Miles Program. Chapter-K is still in the lead. Chapter-P and Chapter- X following close behind. Watch out because the sleeper is Chapter-B. Never count them out. Since this is the riding season, now is the time to get out and visit another chapter gathering. For any couple wanting to learn more about the Couple Of the Year program, please come and join us for the Oklahoma District COY workshop Saturday, July 16, The workshop will be held at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, 516 W. 3 rd, Stillwater, 11am to 1pm. Both couples and all Chapter Directors should attend to see the process for choosing and honoring a deserving couple in your chapter for Couple of the Year. After the workshop, we will go over and eat at the world renouned Hideaway Pizza. You will love the food. Please RSVP if you can make it. What we want to talk about this month is chapter participation. Your chapter needs you to be an active part of it. You can t help but notice that the total number of active chapter members is way lower than the total number of members assigned to the chapter. Why is that? 9

Why are the other half of our members not participating in chapter gatherings, rides and events? This has been something we have been wondering about. Everything we do is geared towards having fun so why wouldn t the rest of our members want to join us for that fun? Why would members be happy just reading the magazine each month when they could be joining us for the great times we have on our rides and at our events? We have to figure out a way to bring them out to our rides and events. Chapter Directors and MEC s have to work together to reach out to these non-active members to find out why they are not joining us. We all get the monthly printout of members and prospective members. We have their addresses and their telephone numbers. We have to call the non-active members. Better yet, hop on your motorcycle and just ride over and say hi. Talk to them and see what we can do to entice them to join us in the fun. Let them know that we are missing them. Retention is a major factor in chapters staying alive. We need to recruit new members. Here is an idea for July. Pick a Saturday or Sunday and do a morning breakfast ride. Put on your parade dress chapter shirt, along with your vest and go to your favorite restaurant. When you get in, go around and pass out GWRRA motorcycle awareness information. Pass out hangtags for a free copy of the Wing World magazine. Talk up GWRRA. SHOW OFF YOUR GOLDWING. Invite people to your gathering, ride or event. Let them know that they don t have to own a Goldwing to participate. The key to GWRRA surviving is new members. We hate to admit that some of our members are getting more mature, like fineaged wine. This has resulted in their decreased membership. We need to replenish our ranks with younger members that will carry on the tradition. We can let people know what our motto really means of FRIENDS-FUN-SAFETY-KNOWLEDGE OK District Chapter Gathering for May 2016 Chapter Members Visitors Gues t Chapter B Chapter E Chapter G Chapter I Chapter J Chapter K Chapter L Chapter M Chapter N Chapter P Chapter X John & Shawn Irons Oklahoma District MEC Ironsline3414@gmail.com

RANDY & LINDA HART We have been riding together for 45 years. We've had many bikes over the decades Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki but nothing as comfortable or enjoyable as our 2004 Goldwing We joined GWRRA and Chapter-X in 2014 and really enjoy the fellowship with our brothers and sisters. We graduated from Yale High School together in 1970 and got married 6 months later. We moved from Yale to Tulsa in 1977 where we lived for 18 years. We moved back to Yale in We just celebrated our 45 th wedding anniversary last December by taking an Amtrak trip to San Antonio. Trains are another way we like to get away together. We're already planning where we want to go for our 50 th! We have been singing with Back Porch Gospel quartet since We have made 4 CD's and are planning to do a 5 th one soon. We travel all over Oklahoma singing in churches and other gospel events. We have one son, Doug, who owns his own business Hart Designs, Etc. He specializes in installing audio & lighting systems in churches & schools. His wife, Viktoria, is a math teacher at Central Tech in Drumright. They have given us 3 very talented grandchildren. Tristan, 17, is a gifted musician, cheerleader & plays basketball. Amberlee, 14, also is a cheerleader, plays basketball, is in the high school band & sings like an angel. Symphony, 9, is a phenomenal artist. We've kept a lot of her artwork anticipating that it will be worth a lot of money when when she gets famous!! Randy was an industrial x-ray technician from He owned his own auto mechanic shop from when he had to retire because of health issues. Since retiring, he has had 2 back surgeries, one shoulder & both knees replaced. None of these have kept him off his bike for long. As soon as the doctor released him, he was back to riding again. Even after a bad motorcycle wreck in 2007, he had a new bike and was back on the road 6 weeks later. He got his first motorcycle when he was 13 years old. Linda was a stay-at-home mom until Doug graduated high school. She has been working full time since The last 8 years has been for Stillwater Medical Center at Dr. Jon Johnson's office. She plans to retire in about 3 years. She really enjoys seeing the patients & getting to know them, but looks forward to having more time for music, gardening, grandchildren and, of course, riding. 11

Riding with REX This month started out terrific! We went to the Missouri rally and all of Chapter X had a great time. We always do, even with a little rain. I won 1st place in the Mascot category, always exciting! The X members decorated me with lights because of the theme, Come Light the Night. (The lights don t really show up in the photo though.) My scrapbook also won! While we were there I got to meet another mascot, Mr. Freedom Wings of Virginia O, an eagle. He told us a sad story. It seems his chapter forgot him after their gathering. He was all alone, but someone else took him and he has been on an adventure since last October, visiting many states and lots of different chapters. I will see him at Wing Ding, I hope. So that part is good. But he had to be missing his Chapter so much. I couldn t help but feel a little sorry for him. I thought how could they forget him?? But now I know. At our gathering I always get to go home with another member and at our last one, it happened to me. THEY FORGOT ME!! Luckily, another member found me sitting in my bag, in the corner, ready to go, and rescued me. I was so disappointed, the family that forgot me were going to take me to another rally in IOWA. What were they thinking, leaving without me?? I hope they have a good explanation, because my feelings are a little hurt. 12
