3 (Background History, Accomplishments and Reference Information of this Historical Event) HISTORY OF EVENT Rudy Rainwater and Rod Wheeler never thought when they were two of the eight motorcyclists that started the Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride in October of 1993 that this ride would grow so much and become the largest organized motorcycle rides in the Nation for that long of a distance over 200 miles. The history of this route was furnished by Richard C. Sheridan of Sheffield, Alabama to Jerry Davis of Scottsboro and Jerry, along with Darla Graves with the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission helped introduce this information to the Alabama Legislature, that the history of this Trail of Tears Route followed closely to Highway 72 and was an important and historical Trail of Tears Indian removal route, the Drane/Hood Route, is one of the overland recognized Trail of Tears routes in North Alabama. With historical documents obtained from the National Archives, Jerry Davis and Darla Graves with the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission work together to get the Alabama legislature to pass a Joint House Resolution that designated Highway 72 and the Madison area a Trail of Tears Corridor for North Alabama. Then Jerry asked a longtime friend of mine and a Harley rider Mr. Bill Cason how could we focus attention on this route, educate the people of Alabama on the Indian Removal Act of 1830 known as the Trail of Tears, and raise funds to install historical markers and trail blazing signs? Bill responded that the best way he knew to accomplish the above goals was to have a motorcycle ride from Ross Landing in Chattanooga to Waterloo, that when Rod Wheeler, Jerry Davis and others started the Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride. The Trail of Tears was a very dark chapter in America s history and one of the most historical of all the trails. The Trail of Tears set the Indian policies for the rest of the 19 th Century which meant removing the Indians (America s first settlers) from their homelands and placing them on reservations. The Government has marked and designated the other historical trails such as The Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and Appalachian Trail. Even though this is out of state I had to mention the beginning place of this tour Ross' Landing, Chattanooga, Tennessee is a Trail of Tears historical marker that ATTOTCA funded and installed. The City of Chattanooga renovated Ross' Landing and has enhanced the Trail of Tears portion of this park. Trail of Tears trailblazer signs every 5 miles from Ross' Landing to Waterloo, Alabama Alabama / Tennessee State Line on U. S. Highway 72 Bridgeport, Alabama, Alabama Department of Transportation funded a pull off and ATTOTCA funded a Trail of Tears historical marker.
4 Fort Payne, Alabama ATTOTCA funded the John Benge Trail of Tears marker at the DeKalb Tourism office and installed Trail of Tears trailblazer signs on Highways 35, 75 and 431 from Fort Payne to Guntersville, Alabama. September of 2002 ATTOTCA funded and installed Madison County High School on U.S. Highway 72 near Gurley host a Trail of Tears Marker. This site is very close to where the Drane/Hood Route and intersect with the John Benge Route of the Trail of Tears. Doublehead Resort, near Wheeler Dam is Trail of Tears/Chief Doublehead historical marker funded by ATTOTCA and Mr. Harvey Robbins. September of 2004 this monument was constructed SACRED TEARS a Trail of Tears Monument in Spring Park in Tuscumbia, Alabama is a statue and funded by a $62,000 grant from the Recreational Trail Program through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). Jerry D. Davis and Tom N. Estes wrote the grant proposal and ATTOTCA and the City of Tuscumbia split the necessary match of $20,000. Accomplishments From 1994 to 2010 Marking the Trail of Tears Routes in Alabama and Tennessee 1995 Waterloo Historical Marker and marble foot stone $ 3, Trailblazers (Drane Route each $13, Bridgeport Historical Marker and.5 acre paved pull off $17, Tennessee 110 $ 3, Chattanooga Ross Landing Historical Marker $ 2, Doublehead Resort Trail of Tears Marker $ 1, Benge Trailblazer signs Fort Payne to Guntersville $ 4, Fort Payne Historical Marker for Benge Route $ 1, Madison County High School Historical Marker $ 2, Memorial and statue Sacred Tears Tuscumbia s Spring Park $62,000 Plus May of 2003 Funded another Historical Plaque at Sacred Tears display at Spring Park in Tuscumbia. $2, large Trail of Tears signs for Interstate 565 $ 5,000 3 Historical markers, Hixson, Tennessee Tahlequah, Oklahoma $ 10,000 Donation to educational (Books, Film and brochures) $ 31,000 Scholarships (Alabama and Tennessee) $ 70,000 American Indian Museum, Circle, Pow-Wows $ 11,000
5 2004 the ATTOTCA funded and installed a bronze plaque that depicts how the SACRED TEARS monument display was designed and the cultural and historical significance is depicted in this monument. $2, Waterloo Landing and the River Walk was added as a official certified site for the National Historic Trail of Tears program with the National Park Service 2010 Installed a historical marker in at the new walking bridge over the Tennessee River in Bridgeport, Alabama where over 5,000 American Indians were moved on the River Route of the Trail of Tears and the railroad bridge that was burned down twice by the Union Army in the Civil War. $2,600. ATTOTCA has raised and spent on The Trail of Tears Designation $210,030 in Alabama and Tennessee with the partnership of Alabama Indian Affairs Commission The economic benefit to the state of Alabama from people participating in Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride for the 17 years of this event with an average economic turnaround of $5,000,000 per year is over $85,000,000 Saturday September 16th and 17th will be the 18 annual Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride we pray for a safe trip.
