1 September 2018 Newsletter August 4, 2018 Meeting Minutes The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Peggy s daughter Dana came with Peggy. There are no new members or guest speakers at this meeting. The minutes for the July meeting were approved. Dan Cash sent the Treasury report to the members via . Safety comments: Mike talked about analyzing and developing insight to adverse situations. Do not just blame the other guy. Think about what could I have done to have a better out come? Be ever vigilant. Some people think that loud exhausts save lives. Not necessarily true. They may hear those loud exhausts, but not know for sure where that sound is coming from. Again, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Gold Rush is in July 2019, to be held in Medford, Oregon. Do we want to incorporate a visit to Gold Rush on our trip next year? We have time to think about and discuss this further. The Veteran s Benefit Ride August 18th is canceled. We had originally scheduled a Scavenger Hunt for that date. No one stepped up to take charge of the planning of the scavenger hunt, therefore it is canceled. Thank you to Carol Henscheid for all the wonderful articles in the newsletter. Great job. GWTA has sent a financial report to us. As of this month GWTA is no longer in debt. However, the financial report sent to us does not make sense or add up. This is why that information was not 1

2 forwarded to the members. We have asked for a treasury report either annually or semi-annually. Lyle Polack commended Joe Henscheid on the wonderful ride he planned to Canada. Lyle enjoyed the comradery and the beautiful scenery. Thank you, Joe. Peggy told a little story about Terry and his new bike on that trip. This year we traveled through North Cascades National Park and up into Canada over a portion of the Crowsnest Highway. This is a summary of the trip. Day 1 Spokane to Winthrop (246 miles) The next drawing for Colors will be $ Sheri Boorman and Antoinette Wisowaty were not present. 50/50 was won by Bob Morgan and Peggy Burns. Each received $15.00 and the Club received $ /50 was handled by Helen Morgan while Carol Henscheid was out of town. Respectively submitted, Trish Stevens for Mary Grose, secretary. July Road Trip Submitted by Joe & Carol Henscheid Once again, Joe planned and led our excellent adventure. The group included Carol & Joe, Dan & Grace, Terry, Charlie & Antoinette, Jack & Cheri, Jerry & Sheri, and Lyle & Alice riding four bikes, one trike, and two cars. Ready to go (Photo by Carol) We left Spokane shortly after 9:00 and rode to Hunters where we took the ferry to Inchelium. 3 Day 2 Winthrop to Hope BC (239 miles) Jerry seeking relief from the heat at the Colville Indian Agency (Photo by Carol) On the second day, we traveled via the North Cascade National Park. After a lunch stop at Sedro- Woolley, we crossed the border into Canada at Sumas. Temperatures at the border crossing were very close to 100. 4 On Day 3, we traveled via Highway 3, also known as the Crowsnest Highway. Our first stop was to view the remains of the Hope Slide. This slide occurred on January 9, Miraculously, only four people were killed. The new highway was built on slide debris approximately 55 meters above the original ground level. After a stop for lunch at Osoyoos, we continued on the Christina Lake. 5 Day 4 Christina Lake to Eureka MT (277 miles) Day 5 Eureka MT to Spokane (233 miles) On day 4, we continued our travels along the Crowsnest Highway. We crossed back into the United States at Roosville. The last day, we traveled via Highway 37 to Libby MT along Kooscanusa Lake. We stopped for a Kodak Moment at Kootenai Falls. 6 13 Riders, 5 days, 1,255 miles. A GREAT time was had by all our thanks to Joe for planning a memorable trip and all those who came and made the trip what it was. 7 North Cascades Crow s Nest Highway Adventure Submitted by Lyle & Alice Pollock Those of us on the North Cascades/Crow s Nest Highway Adventure owe Joe and Carol Henscheid a huge debt of gratitude. The trip was amazing and so well planned that we all relaxed, enjoyed the scenery, our fellow travelers, and the ride. When we got into fruit-growing country, we saw netting over cherry trees. What a great way to discourage thieving birds! Our route included the North Cascades Highway Spectacular! Rock Slide Terry treated everyone to a midmorning Blizzard snack in Osoyoos. Lots of Dairy Queens in B.C.! Carol accepted Terry s offer of a test ride on his new Harley. Lyle and Terry appeared exhausted by the time we reached Hope B.C. (They were faking!) This was the greeter at an amusement park called Rattlesnake Canyon. Can you blame us for skipping it? Once again Joe and Carol, thank you for the time, effort, and research to plan this trip.
