2 WHO S WHO CHAIR Jill Feldman VICE CHAIR Natalie Berman SECRETARY Mary Lou Erikson TREASURER Madeleine Monaco The busy summer months are now behind us, but there are lots of fun activities this fall to keep us flying and seeing our aviation friends. FLYING and FRIENDS JILL FELDMAN, CHAIRMAN Today we had a wonderful Social Gathering at Poplar Grove. The weather was great, there were lots of cool planes to look at, we toured the museum, the EAA 1414 project plane, and had fun at the breakfast. In addition to Mary Lou who was involved in organizing the event, it was great to see 99s Madeleine Monaco who flew in with new member Preethi Thamina, Natalie Berman and her bother-in-law Dave, Sharon Schorsch, and our brand-new sport pilot and birthday girl Kathyrn Brenner. We had a great time - see the pictures posted elsewhere in this AirNews! This month was busy: redoing the new member letter that Membership Chair Karen Ballard is sending out, setting up committees and assigning chairmen, and getting out our first ever survey to members. If you haven t completed the survey, we will give you until the end of the month. See the preliminary results reported by Susan Kelsey elsewhere in this Air News. We will discuss the results at the September teleconference business meeting. A new activity that we discussed at the August meeting was the establishment of Airport Liaisons. Our chapter covers a large geographic area, so we need to use our members to reach out to flight schools, FBOs and women pilots at the airports they frequent. In addition, they can help us connect us with vendors interested in participating in the January Safety Seminar, find us Air Marking sites, and in general, let people know who the 99s are and what we do. So far, we have liaisons assigned at the following airports: C77, PWK, 06C, 1C5, UGN, 3CK, DPA, 0C0, ENW. Contact me if your airport isn t listed and you want an easy way to get involved and help our chapter grow. Deadline for submission the 20th of the month : Madeleine Monaco, Editor Air News is published monthly by the Chicago Area Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, Inc. and is available to non-members for $20 per year. Members must pay chapter dues to receive Air News. Suggested donation for a business card size ad is $5/month or $50/year. Members may place 6 free personal ads per year. Opinions expressed in this newsletter are those of the authors and shall not be construed to express the policies or opinions of the Ninety-Nines, Inc. In September, there are lots of fun activities. For those interested in warbirds and airshows, there is the Waukegan Airshow on Saturday, September 9 th. If you fly in, there are no fees, but if you drive, there will be an entry fee. Check out the website at northernillinoisairshow.com/. Please let me know if you are coming. I will be ing more information on when and where we will meet closer to the airshow date. We are not doing a meeting in conjunction with this event; this will be another Social Gathering. There is also the NCS Meeting in the Wisconsin Dells. There are several of us going from the chapter, but on-time registration and hotel room blocks end on Sept. 1 st. This will be my first ever section meeting, and I am really looking forward to joining in on the fun and information exchange. Since our last business meeting on August 6th went well as a conference call, we will be repeating this method of monthly meetings for September as well. The meeting is September 17th, 5-7 pm. There is lots going on, so plan on calling in to get involved. Call in information: (515) ; Access Code #. Or join via your computer at join.freeconferencecall.com/jill054. Please let me know at jill@windline.net if you want me to send an invitation to your . The next live and in-person business meeting is October 22 at the Schaumburg Airport. On a personal note, my husband and I have a new member to our family, Stella Stinson (thankyou Madeleine for the naming idea). Still some growing pains, but we hope to be getting our 1948 Stinson out to lots of social gatherings this fall. Hope to see you in the sky! Jill Air News SEPTEMBER 2017 page 2

4 I FLY FOR PIE FUDGE(?) By Diane Cozzi Michigan Island s Delight It s a cliché, I know, but time sure does fly. I couldn t believe it d been over five years since we last flew to Mackinac Island we used to go all the time. So Roger Kelly and I flew our Cessna 172 One-One- Honey up there for a couple days just to get away for a while. Virtually the entire island is a State Park and popular summer tourist destination. It also represents a step back in time. You can visit the old forts and battlegrounds that depict the island s early history; and the small town itself, which occupies a corner of the island, is a reflection of the relaxed pace of life in the late 1800s. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the island (most people arrive by ferry). Transportation is mainly by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. The only exceptions are airplanes, and the island has a small well-kept airport to tempt any general aviation pilot. We took a leisurely route north along the Wisconsin lakeshore, then angling eastward. There is no aviation fuel available on Mackinac Island, so we landed at our traditional stop, Door County Cherryland Airport at Sturgeon Bay (SUE) to take on more fuel and to break for lunch. [The official radio call is Door County Cherryland, but you ll hear all variations of that plus Sturgeon Bay on the UNICOM CTAF ] It was a surprise when we landed to see the FBO had expanded to over twice its size. (On the downside, the expansion came at the expense of a quaint little gazebo where we liked to eat our lunch and watch airplanes for a while sadly, it s not there anymore.) After lunch and refueling - both us and the plane - it was eastward over the lake, hugging remote little islands, and taking in the beautiful scenery. There was a slight haze but it was smooth air the whole way! Then just before beginning decent to pattern altitude, there are spectacular views flying over the famous Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Mackinac Island Airport (MCD) has a single paved runway: 8/26 (3501 ft.). CTAF 122.7, AWOS ; Elevation 740 (the highest point on the island); NO FUEL; FBO has limited hours; landing and parking fees; phone for horse-drawn taxi to take you into town. We ve stayed at numerous hotels on the island through the years, including The Grand, probably the most well-known. This time we stayed at our new favorite, The Chippewa, on Main Street. It s a charming hotel on the water and has a great restaurant. There are two things we particularly like to do on the island ride bikes and eat fudge. We prefer Ryba s Fudge and it s not hard to find, as there is usually a Ryba s Fudge Shop about every 300 feet once you get to town ( ok, I m exaggerating there, but not by much). You can also find a place to rent bikes about every 300 feet ( still not exaggerating by much). We had just one full day to go bike riding, and as good pilots do, we checked the weather and knew there was a chance of rain. But we dared it and didn t bring any rain gear and of course, it rained a lot. We rented bikes anyway and spent the better part of a day riding the lakeside path around the island (an 8-mile circumference), stopping to check out the gorgeous (but wet) views along the way, and visiting One-One-Honey at the airport. We were soaked, but on the plus side, it wasn t crowded. So if you re ever in the mood to cool off from the city s heat, a flight to northern Michigan s Mackinac Island is a perfect destination and let s not forget the fudge! 5 Life on the 99s International Board of Directors Round 2! In July, I had the honor of being elected to my second term on the International Board of Director of the Ninety- Nines at the International Conference in San Antonio and I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to represent our organization! Being on the Board has provided me with a kaleidoscope of opportunities to work in a variety of roles, including serving as a liaison to the Endowment Fund trustees, and serving on the Finance Committee, and learning up to be an additional technical driver/speaker finder/content director for 99s webcasts. Other duties as assigned that I ve accomplished mostly revolve around technology, including project management for server upgrades at Headquarters, and sourcing a new IT support services vendor. One of my current projects is working on a Strategic Action Plan task centered on revamping new member Orientation items. I know it sounds like I don t get out much, but I actually do! An additional responsibility for each of us as Board members is to attend a section meeting, in addition to our home section, for both the Spring and Fall meeting cycles, to give news from the International level, as well as learn more about the goings on in their areas, and how we can help. It s been key in helping me forge new friendships with 99s near and far; and helps remind me what an amazing, trail-blazing, courageous, tenacious and dedicated group of women our members are! When I joined the 99s in the Chicago Area Chapter, back as a quiet, shy student pilot, I had little idea of the full breadth and depth of our organization. But having served on both officer and committee positions at the Chapter, Section and International Levels in my (relatively) short time, I can heartily attest that each level, while busy, is increasingly rewarding and they help your voice get louder too Looking forward to this term s adventures Running Shoes On! Anyone who knew her or knew of her activities either in aviation or the 99s please contact Kathy Kathyarkwell@comcast.net Speaking of congrats! We had a nice note from member Helen Sailer, now living in Florida. She will be100 in March and says she would not give up her time as a Chicago Area 99 for anything. Air News SEPTEMBER 2017 Page 5

I remember wanting to be a flight attendant at the time, but when I got to college at UIUC, a friend of mine was taking lessons at an aviation school. I regret not pursuing it at the time, since I was too focused on my medical studies. Then a few years ago I went on a discovery flight, and met my mentor, Madeleine, and she took me on a couple of flights. I started lessons two years ago for about six months in a Cessna 152 at Boraam. I can t wait to finish my PPL and get back up in the air! Editors note: Elaine is one of our Nominating Committee members and volunteers to help whenever she is asked. This completes the series of bios of our 7 elected officers. 9 2017 Chicago 99 Survey Preliminary Results The Chicago 99s conducted a membership survey in August 2017 to determine member interest in a variety of items such as frequency of meetings, types of meetings members would be interested in attending, to learn more about why members attend meetings and what motivate members to continue to attend. The following summary provides preliminary results. An analysis of results will be done at the September Teleconference Business Meeting on September 17 and next steps will be posted in the October Air News. Twenty-nine (29) responses were received from a membership of 87 current members. If you haven t responded, and would like your voice heard, the survey will be closed on September 10 th.
