K E E P E M F LY I N G E l l e n o h a r a, c h a i r m a n Congratulations on the successful Aviation Expo 2016 to the whole team of 99 attendees and especially to Madeleine Monaco as chair, Leslie Prellwitz as registrar, Carol Para, member and IDOT contact, and Deanna Close and Jill Mann presenting Flying Companions. Also, having someone jump in to peddle raffle tickets in between flying in and out of town is much appreciated--thanks new member Natalie Berman! The thanks of several attending pilots were also received with gratitude for undertaking this event. It's a good feeling to be able to say that our chapter did it for all in aviation! Our next meeting promises to be a great educational program about the new runway at Clow Airport and we look forward to seeing other aviation enthusiasts there. Our meetings continue to be interesting learning and teaching events and we can always invite others to attend them with us. Coming up in May will be our Aviation Day with its opportunities to share our love of aviation with our area youth, especially as it pertains to their STEM learning in science, technology, engineering and math--spread the word! Also, for your own interest, remember our 99s Network at 99snetwork@astro.lyris.net At a fall plan meeting we discussed having our meetings begin about an hour later or so with the thought that it gives members an easier chance to arrive on time. Our next meetings demonstrate that and work well in conjunction with other groups or speakers who are available. We might also attract 99s from surrounding chapters. It is always sad to hear about our 99s who have gone to New Horizons. Louise Rogene Kokesh became a 99 on February 27, 1959, and would have celebrated her 57th anniversary this month. Louise and hubby Ray always participated in some way with the chapter's activities and I communicated with her in Florida by until recently. Memories are deep. If we don't have a plan meeting for February, I'll have a conference call to discuss upcoming meetings and other items on our schedule. Please contact me if you are thinking of attending April 16 NCS Section Meeting in Kansas City or July 6 International Conference in Ottawa, Canada. Who knows what plans can develop when we see others going! Keep'em flying! 3 Aviation Expo 2016 The Chicago Area Chapter 99s ran another successful IFR/VFR Safety Seminar on Saturday January 30 th. This is an event that we have been hosting, or co-hosting since the late 70s. In recent years the co -sponsors have been the FAA-DuPage FSDO, the FAASTeam and the Illinois Dept. of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics. It has evolved to the point where between 150 and 450 of our local area pilots have attended and come to expect excellence year after year. You may be aware that the State of Illinois has been having a budget lockdown. This year, without a great deal of advance notice, our Chapter was told there would be no funding assistance, whereas in previous years the hotel expenses were covered by the Division of Aeronautics. We decided as a Chapter to step in, provide the funding and continue the tradition. Our Expo had IFR speakers on charts, procedures and ARTCC operations; VFR speakers on Class B airspace, crosswind landings, aviation weather, loss of control and flight reviews; Flying Companion on how airplanes fly, charts, helping your pilot and planning a trip. The Expo part of our event allows local and regional aviation vendors and organizations to present themselves in their best light to the many pilots present. This years vendors were: Aviation Universe, Avidyne, Inc, Chicago Flying Advisor, Chicagoland Glider Council, Civil Air Patrol, DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, Foresters Financial, Fox Flying Club, FSX Flight School, Hilton Software/WingX Pro7, International Flying Club, Naperville Flying Club, Pipistrel USA / Soar Free LLC, Poplar Grove Airmotive, Recreational Aircraft Foundation, Rochelle Avionics, Savant Capital and Stick and Rudder LLC. We had good weather and the vendors were set to go when pilots and companions started flooding our space in the morning. The first session was a joint event, beginning at 8:45, introducing the sponsors, explaining the Wings credits and getting the day going. Our 99s were given a standing ovation by the audience when told that in they had funded the event in full. Got out of Chicago just before the single-digit temperatures hit in January. Roger left about a week before I did and flew our Cessna 172 One-One-Honey down to Florida; I flew down commercial and met him in Orlando at Walt Disney World where we stayed a few days at the Grand Floridian. There are always new things at Disney: among them, the updated Star Wars Awakens experience at Disney s Hollywood Studios to reflect the latest movie; many new entertainment, shopping and dining additions at Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney); and my favorite ride this time, The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at the Magic Kingdom, where you race through a diamond mine on a roller coaster all full of Disney magic! In addition, anything from the movie Frozen was hugely popular, with little Elsa and Anna princesses running around everywhere. And of course we went to old favorites at Disney s Epcot and Animal Kingdom as well. Then it was my turn to fly! We picked up One-One-Honey at Signature, the FBO at Kissimmee Airport (ISM), and flew to Everglades City. It s located on Florida s southwest gulf coast amidst about 10,000 islands and surrounded by the Everglades National Park. [Good thing we hadn t come a week earlier because the Everglades Airport (X01) was under water from recent torrential rains unusual for this time of year.] But when we were there the sun was shining brightly and the temperature was a pleasant 70 degrees certainly warmer than Chicago. Everglades City is not a big place and it s only about a mile or so walk into town or you can rent bikes at the airport for $4 a day. However, we had overnight bags to tote, so the airport manager took pity on us and drove us to our hotel in his pick -up truck. He also whispered if we still wanted to ride bikes we could get them from the hotel for free J. We stayed only one night at the Everglades City Motel (I think there are only 3 motels in town) Roger took advantage of the free bike, but our real reason for coming was to go to the City Seafood Restaurant a super casual outdoor place on the dock with outstanding fresh seafood the crab claws are our favorite and range in size from big to huge YUM! 7 (Continued from page 5) Diane Cozzi, Roger Kelly, Bob and Gail Rezabek with One-One-Honey at Fort Myers Airport The next day it was still my turn to fly! It was a relatively short flight to Ft. Myers Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and we parked at PrivateSky, the FBO on the field. Our reason for coming to Ft. Myers was to visit Gail Rezabek and her husband, Bob, who recently bought a new house there. Gail and I joined the Ninety-Nines at about the same time and bought One-One-Honey together back in 1976 ( OMG that s 40 years ago!) Roger s my partner now, but Gail and I have been great friends all that time. We asked the line-guy to take a picture of the four of us by the airplane, and immediately posted it on Facebook. Yes, a nostalgic moment. We stayed a couple nights with Gail and Bob (and their cat, Nutmeg) who were the most gracious hosts. We were wined and dined and went sightseeing too. Their home is beautiful and includes a screened in pool de rigueur for the lovely area they live in. Unfortunately the weather was rather cool and rainy so we didn t get a chance to go swimming or kayaking. On second thought, maybe that was a good thing as there is a resident alligator (named Al of course) that hangs out in the lake behind Gail s house. On the last day of our visit, the rain had stopped but it was very windy. Nevertheless, Bob and Roger went on a long bike ride ( Gail and I had more sense) and got a tougher workout than they bargained for. They insisted it was fun. We departed later that afternoon -- me to the commercial terminal then home, and Roger to the FBO to fly around Florida for another week. But the wind didn t let up it was 25 gusting to 35, and between 70 to 90 degrees to the runway. Even the airlines were doing go-arounds. Sitting on the jet at the Dumbo at the Magic Kingdom cuz he flies gate I could feel the wind buffeting the plane. I made it home without further ado, but Roger had to wait until evening before the winds died down enough for him to take off. Good thing Gail packed him a couple sandwiches. And yes, the pie or I should say pies (plural) well, let s just say by the time we left Gail and Bob, I had stopped counting all the key lime and pecan pie Roger ate. I read recently that Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer I totally agree, and wanted to end with that thought and pass it on to you. NOTAM...
