Tryggvy s War 2: Boudica s Revenge July 25-27, 2008 Barony of Three Mountains Clackamas & Multnomah Counties, OR When last we met on the field of battle at Triggvy s War, The War That Would Not Die, Baron Sir Atias walked away with the Iron Viking award. With this in hand, he has been working with his Roman allies with the intent of invading Icenia and taking the lands of Boudica for Roman rule. This will not be tolerated. Boudica s Icenian army led by Baron Sir Tiernan mor dal Cais will defeat these invaders and take revenge for the atrocities suffered by her people. The leaders of the fierce and independent tribes in this region, the Brigantes, led by Skamp Widegrin, and the Coritanians, led by Nemo Mangus, will be enlisting the support of the populace at large and deciding who they will fight for. As most tribes of the region, they have no loyalty to each other. They will be choosing sides based on who they think is worthy and who they think will win. This battle will not only be fought on the battlefield, it will be up to you, the populace, to put forth your talents, interests, and resources to defeat your enemies. You can decide if you want to fight for - the Romans, the Icenia, or if you want to keep your options open and give your support to the tribesmen of Coritani and Brigante. No matter who wins, one thing is for certain, this battle will decide if Boudica will have her Revenge! If you were there for Tryggvy s War, you saw that no matter what is thrown our way the people of Three Mountains and An Tir can overcome and have a lot of fun. If you missed it, now is your chance! 9 Autumn War 2008 August 7-11, 2008 Barony of Blatha An Oir Tacoma-Pierce County, WA The Baronies of Blatha An Oir and Stromgard will again meet on the field of Battle 5 days of WAR! Scenarios are based on the First Scottish War of Independence, , but there will not be English and Scots sides. The Battle of Stirling Bridge - A bridge and ford battle with the two features near opposite edges of the battlefield. The bridge will be very narrow. An army has successfully crossed the river when it has planted two banners deep in the opponent s backfield. Raiding the countryside - An open field battle with stuff scattered about the center. The ratio of the loot removed determines if the raiders win, otherwise the defenders win. Amphibious assault on a fortified town - Berwick was besieged and changed hands several times. A low-walled castle with one imaginary and unbreachable sidewall and the other undefended shoreline too deep to wade will be besieged. If its flag cannot be taken within the time limits, the town has held out. The war at sea - The outlines of two grappled cogs will be marked side by side. Each army will approach the mockups (in mass) using missiles. When the decks are occupied the boarding action begins. To capture a ship requires the death, incapacitation or capture of all those on board. Also: Archery, Thrown Weapons, Games, Hattie Longtooth Woodworking contest, Iron Needle, Single-Entry A&S Competition, Tabletop Trebuchet Contest, War Siege Engines, and more. Written report. See Baronial letter. Seneschal: Khalja present, written report. Greetings all, I attended Champions and had a wonderful time. Congratulations to Qaratani and Talia for a terrific event. A council of the exchequer was called to approve an additional $100 to purchase the insurance certificate needed for the Champions event. There has been some activity around Picnic in the Park that you will hear about in the event reports section of the meeting. Reminder to all officers that quarterly reports are due next month to your kingdom superiors. Deputies, submit your report to your Baronial officer superior who will include your remarks with their report. A request for comments has been sent out to the membership regarding the position of waterbearers. The take of the Society President is that waterbearing should either be done away with completely or it should be subject to local food handling laws. I encourage you to send in your thoughts on the matter. Finally, I have gotten clarity around holding children s only activities at our events. This does require supervision by an individual who has undergone a Society background check. Currently the only 3M officer who has this approval is Meri of the Bears. If you want to submit your name for a background check, please let me know. Baroness Khalja, OP Seneschal of Three Mountains Constable: Open office. Stock Clerk: Meri present, no activity to report. 16 Chamberlain: Duncan present, written report. Greetings Council, This month I opened the storage unit for The Three Mountains Champions event for both pick up & drop off of stuff for the event. Everything came back in good shape, with nothing broken and no reports of problems. 1) The Baronial Pavilion, along with 2 tables, borrowed in May by Her Excellency, was returned via the Event Truck to storage. Again, no report that there were any problems with it. 2) Baronial boffer equipment was returned also. The report is that some of the equipment is in need of repair. I will look into this and have any needed repairs taken care of. I will report on findings and cost estimates next month. 3) We have 2 new carts for the Eric stacks!!!! The Eric stakes are on them and the carts are GREAT!!! 4) I am still looking into the report I received that some of the black Baronial torches were borrowed and want to return home to us. I will report more next month. 5) Eleanor has purchased new plates that were reported lost after the Honor Feast. I need to arrange a time to pick them up and get them into storage. In Service, Duncan. A & S: Qaratani present, written report. Greetings unto the Baron and Baroness, officers, and the populace. The 3M Champions event was this last weekend. We had some beautiful A&S displays. Thank you all for bringing those. The June 2nd Monday social was a great success. Please let everybody know that it is going on at the Multnomah County Arts center every second Monday at 7 p.m. YIS Lady Qaratani Ouygen Arts and Sciences Minister for the Barony of Three Mountains Dance: Slainé not present, no activity to report. Office open, has reapplied. Armorer: Aleyn present, no activity to report Herald: Zachariah and Muireann both present, written report. Greetings Unto Their Excellencies Alfric & Jill Baron and Baroness Three Mountains and the populace. I am happy to report that I lived through my first experience as Court Herald at 3 Mountains Champions event and had a wonderful time. I even managed to get Jill and Alfric s sex untangled by the closing court which I m sure was a great relief to them, sorry for the confusion. The day was fair and warm with a gentle breeze around 20 mph that ruffles the ladies skirts and sent one of the baronial shades cartwheeling joyously across the lists field. A goodly number of awards were presented during the day and are being posted courtesy if HL Ciaran, who spirited away all the prompter cards with the honors printed on them so I can t report them to you today. Three Cheers for the recipients. [see Court Report below] We have new Champions! There were many true and brave competitors who presented themselves before Their Excellencies to uphold the honor of the Barony and at the end of the day these four had prevailed against their fellows. Armored; Sir Octamasades Rapier; Don Gregorio Archery; HL Ersebet Youth; Giani Congratulations are in order for the new Champions of 3 Mountains. Yours in service, Eleanor de Sackville Baronial Scribe Chatelaine: Aíbinn acting, present, written report. Greetings all, Ersebet Janos turned over the Chatelaine supplies and newcomer kits to me this month. Thanks to her for 17

keeping it all organized. Much of the written material needs updating as our barony and kingdom continue to have officer/leadership changes, etc. Alexandria has graciously agreed to assist me in this process. I joined the Newcomers yahoo group at the suggestion of the Baron and Baroness. Ersebet also put me in touch with the Kingdom Chatelaine, so I was able to join the new Rivers Region newsgroup. If I become full Chatelaine, that newsgroup will help me stay on track with kingdom reports. Regrettably I was unable to attend the June social as that was the same evening as our Archery Academy meeting, so I ll try for next month. Yours in Service to the dream, Acting Chatelaine Aíbinn ingen hui Néill Gold Key: Alexandria present, written report. Greetings to Council, All: Gold Key traveled to Champions and both the existing and the new additions have been shaken down, cleaned and sorted through... The great news is that lots of new stuff has come in to me that should be excellent additions to our stores in both sizes and condition to be worn as is. The bad news is that a full 1/5th of the existing gold key is unwearable as it exists (severely stained, ripped out, needing more than an hours repair, threadbare, or just too ratty for anyone to wear). I propose permanent retiring of this garb. Help needed: We need belts. If you have old belts of fabric or leather, rope or braided cord mustering in your SCA wardrobe, consider a donation to Gold Key! New homes for neglected beltage... [Hoods also!] Thanks All, Alexandria DK Illughmin8@opusnet.com home cell Chronicler: Elfreda present, written report. Will attempt to send reports again via this time. In Service, Meri of the Bears. Rapier: Selvaggia not present, written report. Greetings to Their Excellencies & Unto the Populace of Three Mountains I will not be able to attend council tonight due to a conflict in the mundane world. :( Below is the report I received from Monseigneur Chrestien de Valois on Three Mountains Champion Tournament for Rapier. I was unfortunately not there due to a conflict. 18

I am still in search of a new home for the Rapier Fighters and unfortunately have nothing new to report. As for my replacement I still have not gotten a solid yes and am still working them over ;) In the mean time I will continue in my duties as Rapier Marshal for 3M, their Excellencies permitting. There were no injuries or equipment failures to report this month. YIS, Selvaggia Tomassi 3M Rapier Marshal (AKA Maggie HIll) Hello All, The Barony of Three Mountains Rapier Championship was today. Turn out was unfortunately low, too many of the local rapier fighters were out fishing, but we did end up with four good fighters. Maestro Gregorio Christovalez de la Vega led the Lists as four time former Baronial Champion. Facing him was his Cadet Lady Ælfswið þe Gyldenfeax, one time former Baronial Champion. Competing, but not for the title were: Myself, Monseigneur Chrestein de Valois, current Captain of Cats Rapier Champion to the Principality of the Summits and twice former Champion to the Barony of Terra Pomaria. And Sabastian de Winter, often mistaken for Don Sebastien de Caen, Sabastian is the cuurent Rapier Champion of the Shire of Dragon s Mist. Maestro Gregorio divised the tournament, a variation on the French Masters theme. Each competitor would hold the field with their choice of secondary against each other competitor who entered the lists with each of the five weapons (buckler, dagger, cloak, baton and bare hand) -- so five bouts against each challenger. In the course of the tourney each fighter would have 30 total fights, 15 while defending the field and 15 while challenging it. Maestro Gregorio finished with 25 wins, 4 losses and 1 double-kill. Monseigneur Chrestien finished with 20 wins, 9 losses and 1 double-kill. Sabastian had (approx.) 7 wins, 23 losses. Ælfswið had (approx.) 7 wins, 23 losses. Maestro Gregorio and Lady Ælfswið advanced to the finals. Chosen as a best of three passes by His Excellency Three Mountains. First pass was with sword and buckler -- victory to Maestro Gregorio. Second pass was with sword and dagger -- victory to Maestro Gregorio. Victory to Maestro Gregorio as the new (and third consecutive) Rapier Champion of Three Mountains. -- Chrestien >> Lists: Open office. Disa kindly ran lists for Champions. Written report. Greetings All, I did lists for the Heavy Tournament at Champions. This is my last List report since my family will be taking a break from the SCA. I will be giving my write up for my office to Sir Olin to pass on next week. YIS- One last time, Disa Beadsdottir List Mistress of Three Mountains Archer: Andrew present, written report. 19

June Baronial Archers Report: Weekly practice continues in Canby on Sundays, starting at 1pm and ending at 3:30, but it was interrupted a couple of times by events and holiday conflicts last month. On June 9th I attended the Archery Academy planning meeting. I supervised and assisted with set up and running our archery championship last weekend. Thanks to Robert of Wolfork and Ersebet Janos for a great competition format. Congratulations also to Ersebet for her hard won Victory... it was pretty even competition between all four competitors. We received the new Saunders Archery Target Matts, and used them for the first time at Champions. The targets looked Great, were a delight to set up, shoot at and easy to take down, they were also very easy to transport. Given on the 17th day of June, the feast of St. Saint Isaurus, in the year 2008, A.S. XLIII Andrew Stiubhard Chirurgeon: Zach acting not present, no activity to report. OPEN OFFICES: Gold Key, Alexandra approved by council. Chatelaine open, Aíbinn applied, approved as acting last month. Dance open, Slainé reapplied. Exchequer open, Temair reapplied. Event coordinator, waterbearer, lists, demo coordinator still open. Office Application received: (second printing) Greetings unto their Excellencies and all present tonight, I am petitioning to become the Baronial Chatelaine. The office would be one that I would enjoy because I love to learn, make connections, and meet new people. I believe I would do well as Chatelaine because, as a former teacher, I definitely like to explain things; some such as my husband would say I tend to over-explain when I am excited about something! As Chatelaine I would renew the monthly Newcomer s meetings at the coffeehouse in Milwaukie and I promise to check frequently in order to respond to queries. I would also check the 3M yahoo group regularly and I will set up a chatelaine yahoo box if needed. The SCA is a wonderful organization for those who love history and it provides great opportunities to learn many new skills I would be happy for the chance to promote the SCA to newcomers. Thank you for considering my petition. Greetings unto the Baron and Baroness, officers, and the populace The 3M champions event happened this last Saturday and a wonderful time was had. The weather cooperated with us, although it was a bit windy. We had a good turn out and people were very willing to help out. I would like to thank the populace for supporting us! I want to thank Their Excellencies, the participants, all of the officers, and past champions for their tremendous help with this event. Written report. Greetings to Your Excellencies and the Populace, As many of you know Marguerite has some serious health issues, for which she was hospitalized. Although she is no longer in the hospital, she is still not at home, nor is she able to continue with Autocrating Picnic in the Park. At our last Council I was named her Deputy Autocrat and as such I will be taking the event over. Due to the short time frame and my mundane work constraints, some of the activities that Marguerite had planned need to be dropped. I have discussed this with her and she s good with it. I will not be doing a Bardic Competition nor a Treasure Hunt. We will still do a Newcomers Raffle. I will ask people to bring lawn games, if they wish but, basically this is a picnic, an opportunity to get together at a non structured event to just socialize. There will still be a short (?) Court. I will ask people to bring non-perishable food for Charity (Snowcap Community Charities) as Marguerite was doing. I will be giving Conchobar the event copy for the web site tonight. I need to speak with the people who have agreed to bring display items, we need to square away table space. I will contact Alexandria regarding Gold Key. In closing I would like to thank Their Excellencies and Baroness Khalja for the support and guidance, in what has been a rather trying process. I know Marguerite really wanted to do this event, it just didn t work out. In Service, Eleanor de Sackville Tryggvy s War 2 - Boudicca s Revenge July 25-27, Boudicca autocrat, Attia supervising autocrat. Verbal report. 36 days to go. Archery Academy September Ersebet autocrat, Aíbinn supervising autocrat. Archery Academy is rolling and poised to be a great event! Here are the happenings of the last month: Meeting on June 9 discussed class descriptions, the web site, and registration procedure. 21

There is the possibility of a guest speaker. Registration will proceed as follows: class registration will go to Ithra and event registration to the PO box. Insurance request for both AA and Triggvy s War completed and ed. Web site estimated to be up and running within the next week! YIS, HL Ersebet Janos Autocrat for Archery Academy There have been a few developments that also require reporting. I apologize for the multiple reports. Event copy has been provided to the web minister for publishing on the 3M web site; We have a new web developer, Gaeth McKinnley, who will have a finished event web site by the end of this week; I heard from SCA corporate and the insurance certificate, which will also include Triggvy s War, will be provided by the end of the week; I have sent Save the Date s to multiple lists with a teaser about the classes we ll be providing; There is now a new Archery Academy planning group on Google groups which will be managed by me. Lost Days of Gregory XIII October 4, Alexandria autocrat. Lost Days of Gregory XIII report for June Date is still open with the Sauvie Island Grange and we should have a contract in hand by early next week. EIF for kingdom is filled out and is only waiting for the signed contract before it is sent. Date reservation is in and is appearing on Kingdom calendar. We need workshop leaders, calendar geeks, book heralds and folks who specialize in garb accessories (belts, hats, trim, wallets, shoes, etc) to sign on for a 1/2 to an hour talk during the event, as well as clever folks to help with the calendar theme... More details next month. Alexandria Autumn Masque October 18, Giana autocrat Greetings Unto Their Excellencies and the Populace of Three Mountains! Autumn Masque is officially on the Kingdom calendar now. I am preparing the first bit of event copy to turn in for approval so we will be able to start publicizing. I would like to request a reallocation of some of the funds I earmarked for incidentals. I conferred with Morwenna, and she advised me that the pot luck would be best done with a main course contribution from the Barony. So I would like to use $75 from the $100 set aside for incidentals to purchase food for a main course. Meanwhile, the music and dance plans and plans for the masked rapier competition are proceeding nicely. We should have some event copy ready for approval for the rapier portion in the next week or two. It was decided at Champions that the A&S Championship contest will take place during the Autumn Masque, so I m sure we will be seeing some information on that soon. Finally, I will be attending a private mask making workshop in July. After that, I will be able to make better plans, including supply lists, for our workshop that will take place in early October. That s everything for now. In Service, 22
