2 The Plume The Chronicle of the Barony of Three Mountains Chronicler and Plume Editor - Elfreda Webminister & Adobe Support - Conchobar Clarsair Letters From Their Excellencies Greetings unto the council and noble citizens of the Barony of Three Mountains! We Alfric and Jill, Baron and Baroness start this missive by reporting on our doings for the month of October. Although we have been separated by vast miles and many kingdoms; I your Baron and my lady love Baroness Jill have been busy representing or great barony in lands both near and far. I have or will be attending several events and meetings this month; the first being Kaldor s business meeting where much eating and discussion were had; I then attended the Feast of St. Hedwig in the Shire of Heron s Reach where I had the honour of choosing the newest recipient of the Punny-Bunny. This last weekend I taught carving at our own Roving to Raiments Ithra where I had a blast. I will be attending the St. Crispin s Day Harvest Festival this upcoming weekend and then will take a well deserved weekends rest and recharge for the upcoming winter season. November 3rd brings A Knight in the Carpathians - Nothing like a good murder mystery - We are excited and honoured to welcome three entran Baronial Council minutes continued on page 19 ts into our Baronial Arts and Science Championship as well as those who will be presenting their works as single entries. This is going to be a wonderful and exciting event. We encourage all who are interested in joining the illustrious ranks of the Sergeantcy to prepare yourselves and have your letters of intent ready for presentation at the Kalder Yule Feast in December. Last week I attended a business meeting for the shire here and next month I am going to Trimaris Crown Tournament! It should be fun! Unfortunately, I will miss Knight in the Carpathians. Please support what will be an outstanding event. We have three outstanding competitors for Baronial A&S Championship, which will be decided at the Knight in Carpathians event. 3 November s Getting to Know You is Master Aleyn the Younger. Our sincere thanks to him for being willing to leap into the gap with his tell-all confessions! 1. When did you join the SCA? My first official event was 12th night 1988 when Steingrim Stallari was crowned King with Queen Lenora di Felicie. 2. Why did you join the SCA? General interest in both history, and Dungeons and Dragons, plus the whole idea of wearing armor and fighting sounded cool. 3. Was this Barony your first group...if not, where else have you played? I started in Briaroak, moved to Glyn Dwfn, then to Three Mountains and currently actually live in Dragon s Mist. 4. What do you do in the SCA? Hmmmm I have tried so much that it is hard say what I do Heavy fighter, fencer, archer, herald, cook, brewer, costumer, armorer, marshal, teacher, leatherworker, woodworker, war leader, dancer, gamer, officer, those are the ones that come to mind right now, I know I have tried many other things that I either did not have a real interest in or just do not have the time to work on. One of the things that I think is best about the SCA is the fact that there is so much knowledge out there and everyone is willing to share what it is that they do. 5. Is there anything you d like to learn how to do in the SCA? I would like to have the time to do more horseback work but that will have to wait 6. In the real world, do you have a family (Spouse, kids, etc)?..if so do they participate in the SCA? Since I joined the SCA I have only on very rare occasions dated anyone who was not in the SCA. That was one of the primary things I was looking for in a wife, was did she play mixed marriages rarely work, and no civilian woman would understand the statement Gee I would love to spend more time with you but not on Monday nights, every third Tuesday nights, Most Wednesday nights, no Friday nights during the winter and almost no weekends during the summer. That is why I am so lucky to have found my Baroness, my love, my wife. What can you tell us about your persona? (country of origin, time period, etc.) Aleyn is the third son born into clan McEwen in 1333 in Scotland. 8. Tell us one (or more) of your favorite SCA memories. AnTir/West War AS 24/25 (something like that) war was held on the coast and a group of us had camped on a small rise. About 7:00 am I woke up and the area below was all fog covered, making the tents and encampments hazy and indistinct. You have been in the SCA for too long when hmmm I am not sure you can be in the SCA too long (I know it s not funny, but my mind does not seem to want to do funny right now.) 10. Tell us anything else you think people might want to know about you (SCA or real world). Why would anyone want to know anything else about me? I am pretty boring. [The editor begs to disagree...] Letter From the Editor Let me ask your indulgence, as I repeat a message you may hear repeatedly from Their Excellencies, Baroness Jill and Baron Alfric, and from your King and Queen, Tiernan and Miranda. This is an excellent time of year to make Kingdom Award Recommendations to Their Majesties, especially with several feast events coming up where the King and Queen will be in attendance. It s always a good time to send Baronial Award suggestions to our Baron and Baroness too. But, you say, Surely Their Majesties and Their Excellencies know who deserves an award? No, not always. But my friend has played for years, so he must already have a award! No, not necessarily. But, you say, I can t recommend someone for a Peerage! Yes, actually, you can. Start now. 5 A Knight in the Carpathians and Three Mountains Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship November 3, 2007 The Barony of Three Mountains Clackamas & Multnomah Counties, OR The shadows lay long and deep along this lonely and remote mountain crossing in the eastern Carpathian Mountains. The winds pick up. Flashes of lightning assault the dark. Thunderclaps torture the mountaintops. And rains soak you to the bone. The horses pulling your coach seem ready to bolt in mad terror as they shiver and whinny nervously. Just when all hope of shelter seems vain, an inn appears out of nowhere it s not even on your map. The swinging shingle above the arched entry reads: The Red Spike Inn. You knock on the oddly-shaped heavy wooden door a coffin lid? The door opens with a slow creak and you find yourself greeted by Vostroi the innkeeper. It is good to get out of the wind and rain and the Inn is warm and inviting, with a table in the middle of the room set with a variety of inviting dishes of food that appear freshly prepared, as if you were expected. The innkeeper says, Please come in. Sample the zakuski. Warm yourself by the fire. I ll have Igor put your horses in the stable and prepare you a room for the night. Unfortunately, the bridge ahead has just been washed away. A slide has also barred your passage back. You might as well stay the night and make yourself comfortable if you can. You wonder to yourself how he knew the road conditions and what he meant by if you can. You let the thought pass, shrugging your shoulders and taking a bite of the zakuski. It is comforting to pass the time chatting with friends and the fabulous strangers you meet at the Inn, who have also found shelter from the storm, and together you partake of various games of chance and skill by the bright central fire. Murder Mystery: Sometime during the evening you may find yourself caught up in a strange and dark mystery of blood curdling proportions and you wonder if you will survive the night. The Barony of Three Mountains will also be holding its Arts & Science Championship during this event. (see below) Murder Mystery and Arts and Sciences Championship (what a combination, eh?): During the murder mystery evening, Three Mountains will also be seeking its next Arts and Sciences Champion. Come, show your prowess in the arts and sciences and vie for the title. Requirements: Three entries of any type, either art or science, and appropriate documentation. Entries will be judged on documentation, workmanship/craftsmanship, and design/aesthetics. Remember, this is a local competition, so the documentation doesn t have to be extreme. Please see the judging form on the Three Mountains website for details on what the judges will be looking for. Notification of your intent to compete must be given by Sunday, September 30, 2007 so we have plenty of time to line up judges for you. Notification can be verbal or in or other written format and should be given either to Their Excellencies, the current Champion Andrew Stuibhard, or the A&S Minister, Giana Visconti. (Contact information below.) You will need to present a letter of intent during Court, at the event, in addition to this notification. 6 A Knight in the Carpathians continued Lord Andrew Stiubhard, A&S Champion at and HL Giana Visconti, Minister of Arts and Sciences, at Pot-Luck: (In keeping with the style of the event and the A&S Championship) zakuski is Russian for hors d oeuvres and the Autocrat, Vostroi, has recipes to assign to those who wish to participate (i.e. eat). In an effort to create an authentic experience the autocrat is requesting only period/event appropriate snack food and he has recipes available. So if you wish to dine at the event and be a part of the potluck, contact the autocrat for your assigned zakuski dish. Please write or call the Autocrat, Vostroi, (Sean Hinckley) to obtain a recipe: vostroi@gmail.com or or send a note to him at 5925 N. Gay Ave., Portland, OR no later than October 20th. IF you care to do your own research you are welcome to bring a period zakuski dish based on a recipe of your own but please notify the Autocrat so he can log your participation. (Those doing their own research will be asked for documentation.) All the pot-luck zakuski dishes will be judged by all the other participants, based on authenticity, presentation, and taste. Baron Master Vostroi will present a prize to the people s choice based on those three criteria. This is a dry site and all suitable beverages are BYOB in period containers only. Please respect the hard work that the cooks contributing to the pot-luck have put forth; if you do not have the time or inclination to participate in the period zakuski pot-luck, be sure to make other dining arrangements for you and your party. Time and Location: From 3 PM until 10 PM at the Parkrose Masonic Lodge located at 4812 NE 102nd Ave. Portland, OR (See map at Site fee: $3.00 per person for members with proof of membership and $6 for non-members ($3 non-member surcharge.) Fall Crown Council Saturday, November 10th 2007 Barony of Stromgard Ridgefield, WA Their Royal Majesties, Tiernan and Miranda, invite the populace of An Tir to attend Fall Crown Council, held within the fruitful lands of the noble Barony of Stromgard. Members of the Peerage Orders and Noble Estate are especially welcome. Bring your banners for ambiance; we have plenty of wall space to hang them! We shall have a day of revelry, fighting and meetings that will end with Royal Court and a Potluck Feast. A selection of meats will be provided by The Barony of Stromgard, for more details see the Menu & Feast information below. The Virgin Countess Inn will be on site serving breakfast, lunch and snack selections during the day for a minimal fee. If you plan to attend feast, please bring a suitable offering that will serve 10 people. Due to the nature of this event, no children s activities are scheduled. A Traveler s Yule & Potluck Feast December 8, 2007 Hosted by the Incipient Canton of Kaldor with the generous support of the Barony of Three Mountains Be part of this first ever event for the Incipient Canton of Kaldor and welcome in the Yule Season with a Potluck Feast and some lighthearted activities. SCA Artifact & Reliquary Display and Competition: Get creative and have fun with our own SCA take on the ubiquitous Medieval Reliquary: A splinter of sword from a Tournament of the Lions housed in a pierced tin box; Mud from your first May Drown carefully maintained in a rusted shield boss; The silver bottle-opener from the first gathering of the Ships in an shiny brass tube; These are just the type of special SCA artifacts and the containers housing them that should be remembered and revered-and giggled about for years to come! Join the Incipient Canton of Kaldor in a display of your treasured SCA objects and the incredible, creative and humorous containers that have been created by your artisans to house them in our SCA Artifact & Reliquary Display. Other activities: A group arts activity will be going throughout the day that could use many hands to help complete. Bring your heraldry, badge or favorite critter to draw it on the Canton Carpet-Tile Project. Or bring your own project to work on as you visit with others. Newcomers should come to enjoy the variety of newcomer friendly activities prepared just for you. Also expect dancing and other spontaneous activities to pop up throughout the day for all to enjoy. The Potluck Feast (after 5:30 pm): Kaldor will supply the main dishes (including vegetarian) plus nonalcoholic drinks, breads and some sweets while you travelers supply the heart of the feast with your period and period-ish side dishes and extras (bring ingredients list please). Bring your specialties in quantities to feed 8 adults and don t forget the serving containers and utensils marked with your name. Please expect to take your dishes home dirty to be washed off-site. Site Opens at 10:30 am & Closes at 10 pm Directions (for those coming from the south) From Portland, OR: Take your best route to I-405 N. Merge onto US-30 W (exit 3) toward St. Helens. Travel up US-30 W for about 25 miles to the Town of St. Helens. (Follow directions from St. Helens) From Beaverton and Route 26: Take the Cornelius Pass North (exit 62A) toward Route 30 and St. Helens. Drive the length of the road until it dead ends into Route 30. Turn Left onto Route 30 and follow it up past Scappoose and Warren for approx. 14 miles to St. Helens. (Follow directions from St. Helens) In St. Helens: Turn onto Left onto Gable Road by the High School (will have Columbia County Fairgrounds direction marker) and stay on road for 0.7 miles. Road will become S. Bachelor Flat Road for 0.2 miles and will make a 4-way stop. Make Left at 4-way and continue on Bachelor Flat Road through the gentle right curve and continue 0.7 miles on this road to a stop sign. Continue straight through stop sign (road name changes to Saulser Road at stop sign). In less than 0.1 miles on Saulser you will see the Columbia County Event Complex & Fairgrounds sign and driveway to the Right marked GATE 2. Turn in and park along drive or in parking area designated. The first large Blue-Green Octagonal Building on your Left is the Site Building. Directions from I-5 and Longview, WA (for those coming from the north) From I-5 take the Longview US-30 E Exit toward Longview. Follow the signage toward the Lewis and Clark Bridge (bridge over the Columbia from Longview, WA to Oregon) for about 2 miles. After you go over the Bridge, take the US-30 Ramp (heads southeast) toward St. Helens and Portland. Continue down US-30/Lower Columbia River Highway for about 20.8 miles until you enter the Town of St. Helens. By the Burgerville, take a Right onto Sykes Road and drive through the subdivisions staying on Sykes for about 2.1 miles. Once you get out of the subdivision A Traveler s Yule continued page 9 8

Follow it around until you see the Fair Complex Sign and GATE 2 which is the main driveway on your Left. 10 Schedule for upcoming Friday Night Revels Friday Night Revels are held from 7:00-9:30 p.m., at the Beaverton Community Center, SW 5th Street, Suite 100, Beaverton, OR. It is a friendly, casual social night with dancing, painting of charters, heraldry consulting, games, snacks and fun! Garb recommended but not required. 11 You re Going To A Feast. Now What? Or, a brief guide to feasting in An Tir, including definitions of terms, etiquette tips and romance! Eyes the color of tropical seas meet yours across the eric. The fighter approaches, helm tucked under an arm, blond curls plastered across a forehead. Will I see you at the feast? purrs a velvet voice. Yes, of course you stammer. The herald calls the bout and a helm slides over that face. Lay on shouts the marshal. Rattan meets plate in a resounding clash. Later at the feast, my darling, you think as the fighter is drawn off the field by comrades. Feast? What Feast? Where, When, How? To attend any feast you will need to have feast gear. Utensils and items like plates, goblets and bowls are not provided. In addition you will need to bring your own beverage in most cases. If you are of legal age, you may bring alcohol to a wet or discreetly wet site. Tables and chairs are routinely provided but you may always bring your own chair. There are two main types of feast in An Tir, commonly referred to as Pot-luck and Served. If the feast is potluck, in addition to bringing your feast gear you will need to bring a dish to share that will serve at least 10 people. A card listing the ingredients is greatly appreciated. The site copy often contains a breakdown of who should bring what, for example; all one-eyed Norsemen should bring desserts. Sometimes the host of a pot-luck feast will provide something special like a roast beast or bird. The feast may be served buffet style or the dishes may be presented by servers. Pot-luck feasts rarely require advance reservations, but a small fee in addition to the regular site fee may be charged to pay for rental of tables or other items. Served feasts feature a pre-planned menu provided by the host. Almost always attendance at a served feast requires buying a ticket a head of time. A cut-off date for ticket sales is typically two or more weeks before the feast. although at the discretion of the Feast-o-crat, other arrangements can be made. Feast staff can sometimes get free or reduced price tickets. Some feasts may include reserved space for picnickers or other off board attendees. Upon entering the feasthall, you may be asked to sign in or be given special instructions on where to sit and stow your stuff. You may be allowed to set up your feast gear on a table early in the day or, if the hall is being used for another activity like court before the feast, you may be given only a short and specific time for setup. Across one end of the hall will be the high table. Do not sit at the high table unless invited. Seating in the rest of the hall is most often first come, first serve, although special sections may be reserved for families with small children, dignitaries not seated at the high table, picnickers, households or other groups. You may usually set up your feast gear at any open seat, but it is polite to ask permission of neighboring diners. They may still need one more spot for Uncle Bernie. Do not shift anyone s personal stuff without permission. Also, do not move tables or chairs unless given permission to do so; the setup of tables and seating is part of the event design. Many feast-o-crats plan their feast with a specific theme like Yule in Jerusalem 1269 or A Night in a Burgundian Court. The theme may dictate the style of décor in the hall, the menu, or entertainment. Attendees are often encouraged to dress to match the theme, but strict adherence to the theme is not required. 12 You re Going to a Feast, continued down with his friends at a Roman meal. You are welcome, in most cases, to add your own flair to the feasthall by bringing and displaying your personal banner. At last the feast begins. Electric lighting in the hall may be turned off or lowered allowing candles brought by the attendees or provided by the host to light the scene. A herald may welcome you and announce the entry of assorted dignitaries. You should stand as they enter and bow or curtsey as Royalty, Royal Peers or the Baron/Baroness pass you. They will ask you to be seated once they reach the head table. Some entertainment or speeches of welcome may take place before serving starts. If the feast is being served, the Head server or a herald may announce each of the dishes being served in each course or remove as it is served. Dishes will be served first to the head table then to the rest of the hall. Feasts commonly have 3 or 4 removes but dishes may be served all at once or in many more removes. In period each course would include both savory and sweet dishes, vegetables and meat. In common SCA usage soups may be served only in the first remove and desserts are often clustered in the last remove. So save room for later. If you have concerns about the food to be served you can contact the Feast-o-crat before buying your ticket for more detailed information on the menu. This is highly recommended if you have serious food allergies or intolerances or are on a special diet for any reason. Most feasts are planned to have dishes to appeal to a variety of people, i.e.: most feasts will contain at least some vegetarian dishes, but do not expect the kitchen to make special preparations just for you. Between courses a server may come by with a slop bowl and collect your bits of bone, fat or other food waste. Also between courses or at other times the Baron may conduct small pieces of court business or bards may entertain the populace. Entertainment may be an elaborate production or a simple story or sing-a -long. If you wish to entertain, you generally may. Ask for the person in charge of the entertainment. He or she can tell you where and when your contribution can be used. Entertainments may also continue during the courses. There are two theories on respecting bards. One theory asks for silence in the audience just as if you were attending a play. Some, including some bards, feel if the bard cannot command your attention, they don t deserve it. Most people split the difference and may eat or talk quietly with their tablemates during a presentation but avoid outbursts not in keeping with the entertainment. The key is not interfering with the enjoyment of others. Do talk to your tablemates. Here s your chance to get to know that gorgeous fighter and other new friends. Flirting is an oft practiced art you may encounter at a feast. Even long married people may indulge in shameless flirting that will ultimately go no farther than a kiss on the hand. Others may be looking for something more than harmless play. It is your responsibility to say when enough is enough. A simple statement of I am not comfortable with this. should suffice, but do not hesitate to ask for help from others if you need it. The offering of a cloven fruit is a typical flirtatious game. If you are offered one, you may politely refuse or accept the offer. A kiss is required in exchange, but the lady may decide where the kiss is given, lips, cheek or hand. Chocolate kisses or a hug are acceptable substitutes for a kiss. Once accepted, the fruit should be offered to another. Eventually the feast will end. This may be a formal leave-taking by people at the head table or a slow drift off as people pack up and leave. You may be able to wash your dishes or have them washed at the feast hall, but do not count on it. Pack a bag to store them in until later. Do not ever wash your dishes in the bathroom. Bathroom sinks are not designed for food scraps. You are responsible for cleaning up your own place. Pack up your feast gear and clean up any sloppy messes you may have made. Usually there is time for socializing after a feast but if you see the staff getting out brooms and folding tables, either help or get out of the way. An excellent way to get to know people is offering to help with cleanup or other tasks. An extra pair of hands is always appreciated even if there is no work for them at that particular moment. Finally, the end of an evening well spent, good food, good fellowship with friends new and old. New friends have persuaded you to offer your favor to that luscious fighter for the next tourney. Time to repair to your encampment or load up the dragon and wend your way home. Drive safely and soberly and we will see you next time. Favor? What the heck is a favor? 13 You re Going to a Feast, continued Some terms and definitions: Feast: a sit-down meal and social occasion as informal as a few friends sharing the contents of their coolers or as grand as hundreds gathered in a candle-lit hall often includes entertainment. Feast Gear: a collection of eating utensils, plates, bowls, candles and table linens, usually carried in a Feast basket. Feast Basket: any container used to carry feast gear often an actual basket but could be a box or other convenient item. [See the October Plume for HL Richeza s companion article, How to Fit Yourself Out for a Feast. ] Wet site: halls allowing alcohol consumption on site are designated wet in site copy, Dry denotes no alcohol allowed. Site copy: information about the event and the site; includes times, activities and directions and special instructions i.e.: no pets, or dry site, usually printed in the Crier or your local newsletter, or the event copy online. Roast Beast: a main dish meat, could be beef, pork or occasionally, lamb, venison or mutton. Roast Bird: Usually turkey. Feast-O-Crat: Head honcho in charge of feast. The autocrat of the event is in charge of the entire shebang. This term is now falling out of favor and replaced by a number of alternatives such as event steward. Servers: volunteers employed to take care of various tasks in the hall during a feast most notably serving. Kitchen staff stays in the kitchen. Picnickers: attendees at feasts who eat only food they brought themselves, most frequently people with special dietary or budgetary needs but also other reasons. Off Board/On Board: More formal terms usually used to define difference in ticket prices. On includes food, Off denotes bring your own. Feasthall: Any place a feast takes place, usually but not always an enclosed space. High Table: a table or series of tables set up at the head of the room, maybe on a dais, reserved for dignitaries such as royalty, local or other baron/baroness, champions, special guests and consorts. Banner: a flag, usually hanging vertically, decorated with a symbol of you personally, such as your device, or representing a group you belong to. Royalty: Members of the royalty are the King, Queen, Crown Prince or Princess. Past holders of these titles are called Royal Peers and use titles of Count/Countess or Duke/Duchess or an equivalent suitable to their persona. Baron/Baroness: There are two types of baronetcies. Landed Barons are the heads of Baronies, Court Barons are granted title for great service to the Crown, often previous outstanding service as Landed Nobility. Remove: A complimentary set of dishes served together, usually 3 to 6. The medieval term was course, but remove persists in the SCA vernacular. In Period: a phrase that refers to how things would have been done during the Middle Ages. Slop Bowl: a bowl or other container for food waste. You can include a personal one in your feast gear or one may be provided. Bards: persons who provide entertainment, like pretty much everything in the SCA volunteers. Bards include, singers, dancers, storytellers, musicians of all types, puppeteers, actors, jugglers and other entertainers. Do Talk to Your Tablemates: Ask them about their clothing, feast gear or persona or even the weather if nothing else. Introduce yourself and do not hesitate to say you are new to the SCA. Friends are lurking everywhere. Cloven Fruit: a piece of fruit, most often a citrus fruit, with whole cloves pushed into the skin. Used in a flirting game. To accept one take out one clove and bite into it then kiss the giver or allow them to kiss you. Then you pass it on to another member of the opposite sex. Nothing more than a general respect and liking is implied. But it can be a good opportunity to meet that really cute fighter or bard. Encampment: your home away from home at events. Usually a pavilion or tent but could also be an RV or even a motel room. Dragon: A disputed slang term used to mean a car or other transportation. Many people feel it gives too much of a fantasy feel to the SCA rather than a historical feel since real dragons had no place in day to day life of the Middle Ages. After the revised zipcode census there are 234 members in the Barony. The preliminary work on the storage unit had been completed. My thanks to Malcolm, Morwen, Liadian, Elfrieda and Aleyn for helping with this. Apologies to Ula leaving her outside the gate. My term of office will be completed in February next year. To facilitate an orderly transition I am declaring the office open and would ideally like my successor to be in place for the January meeting. My warrant is valid until the end of February and this would give my successor to complete the necessary paperwork for the transition. I have also held the office of Baronial A&S Minister and been a deputy seneschal twice (to Titus and Helena). I have been attending baronial councils for a bit over 10 years and believe I have a good grasp of how the council works. Through both modern and SCA experience, I know how to provide leadership to a group to get them working together as a cohesive team. Storage Unit: Cleaning and inventory happened. Helena discussed some of what they cleaned out. Had Show&Tell with photos of items such as food and dirty dishes in storage unit, and Malcolm read a letter as a supplementary chamberlain s report. (See Master Malcolm s letter following.) Asked for $200 for proper boxes for seneschal s records that we re required to keep. Also discussed old Rivers Region s seneschal s papers, general opinion was to send it to Kingdom seneschal. Unto Their Excellencies Alfric and Jill Three Mountains, Their Officers and subjects in Council assembled does Malcolm macgregor send these words, Greetings, Friday, 28 September, Their Excellencies Helena (Ilonka Wurtz), Aleyn (Robert Wurtz), Elfreda (Lori Bennard), Liadan (Sam Murphy). Morwyn (Linda Taylor) and I gathered at the Baronial Storage unit for a cleaning and inventorying session. We had more room than usual in the storage unit as the Eric panels, dayshade fabric and Baronial Pavillion fabric were not cluttering the place. After a bit of poking around in boxes and free-form brainstorming, we arrived at our operational plan for the day: look through all the Baronial Stuff, throw out that which is broken, gather similar stuff together, inventory the culinary collection (for which we have a 2004 inventory), start on an inventory of the rest of the Baronial Stuff, and generally brainstorm what we would like to see happen with our Baronial possessions. And have lunch at IKEA. We hauled out about six trash bags worth of garbage. This consisted primarily of stuff which was moldy (e.g. some of the waterbearer s bottles, a bag of sisal rope packed damp in a tote with some fabric), hot drinks mixes and waterbearer s Gatorade mix which were open, sealed drink stuff which was past pull date, and things which were broken (e.g. glass candle holders for the Baronial chandelier, a Styrofoam cooler). We took the boxes of Seneschal and Exchequer files and tucked them into one of the back corners, where they will be out of the way, pending an editing and purging. We found some amazing things. The Barony has a dozen rolls of surveyor s tape, though at the time it seemed like three dozen because we found surveyor s tape in eight different totes. We have approximately 1200 plastic spoons, in three slightly used 500-count boxes. For the foreseeable future we do not need any more plastic spoons. We produced a preliminary inventory of everything in the storage unit on 28 September, though more work still needs to be done. For example, we need to go through the boxes holding the Costco carports and the boxes holding the braziers. We did not haul out and test the roasters, though we moved parts around to make up three complete and two incomplete roasters. But we did come up with some ideas. Lots of ideas. What they boil down to are the three goals of knowing what we own, who has it at any point in time, and taking better care of it. To achieve these goals and to come up with policies to help us achieve these goals will take a deal of time and a fair amount of effort. We are going to need to modify both the Chamberlain s and the Autocrat s responsibilities in the Baronial Customary, and come up with a check-out and check-in system that works.
