From Their Excellencies Three Mountains Greetings unto the Council and Populace of Three Mountains from Baron Aedan and Baroness Alexandria! The tournament season draws to a close as harvest time nears. While We were unable to attend September Crown, heartiest congratulations to our new Crown Prince Eirik Daegarsson and Crown Princess Drifinna! The Barony and its lands have several marvelous events coming up in October. On the 5th is Honour Feast recognizing Master Malcolm Rudolph Mac- Gregor. Come prepared with an appetite! The event also includes the Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship. As of this past week, few had put their names forward for the overall championship - don't miss this opportunity to display your finest creations! The following weekend, the Canton of Kaldor Ness is holding their Cultural Accademia. This event offers several opportunities to learn the history and craft of several different cultures, many of which are more unusual in the SCA. In addition to the cultural track, several Ithra core classes are being offered as well. Support of our Canton's events is vital to its continued health as a branch, so please consider taking a few courses! On the 22nd of this month, We will be holding a Sergeantry Candidates and men-

tors (that's you existing Sergeants and Emeriti). The meeting will begin promptly at 1:00PM at the Oddfellows' Hall in Milwaukie and should last no more than about an hour and a half. Candidates should come prepared with their plan and progress. Once again, as the Barony still has several open offices, We would like to take this opportunity to encourage people to volunteer for offices. We would also like to encourage current officers to take one or more deputies and train them in the office to create a pool of qualified individuals to take the job in the future! Stock Clerk Report 9/17/ Mountains Unto Their Excellencies, Council and Members of 3 Mountains, It has been a long and boring year with no changes within this office except to dust myself off occassionaly. And now, LO and BEHOLD!!, I have sent 2 copies of Our most coveted Armoring Manual to a very generous Lord in Texas. The copies were sent along with a very nice, hand-written thank you note and a bumper sticker. Many thanks to Terry Molitor for his purchase and donation!! YIS, HL Meri of the Bears Baronial Emmisary: Slaine present written report. Event Coordinator: Open for Applications Seneschal of KaldorNess: Jacinda absent, written report. Seneschal's Report for the Canton of Kaldorness Sept 17, 2013 Greetings Your Excellencies, Council Members and Guests: Our last business meeting was on 8/27/13 at Dani's home in Scappoose with 11 members in attendance. Our next meeting is at 7:00 PM on Sept 24th at Mighty Fortress Games in Scappoose. We currently have $ in our account with the Barony of Three Mountains. There are no changes from the last report. Local bank is in need of the tax ID number to finalize the change in accounts as previously discussed. Our business meeting in August was difficult for many to attend due to unforeseen illness and conflicting mundane appointments. We discussed the importance of having contingency deputies on hand and at the ready for all major offices. Hammer Night at Keith & Amy's continues to produce bent bits of metal, piened rivets, much clatter and consider conviviality. Meanwhile, in the quiet part of the house, serious discussion and excitement was had on preparations for the Multi-Cultural Accademia being held next month. In regard to the upcoming KaldorNess Cultural Accademia, final discussions and decisions were made -- for example the rundown of volunteer jobs and possible folks willing to work on them. We are looking specifically for Clean up and Set up crews. The kids area will be a courtesy and will not be staffed, but will be available for helping to keep them busy. If anyone else is interested in helping please contact Mariotta after the meeting. Aurelia has put up several fliers and 280 cards in the county so far to advertise our Canton. Discussed a few other options for getting some information out there like the Facebook's "Happenings in Columbia County" Community page. We also Talked about September Crown, Honor Feast, AnTir Kingdom Feast, Yule, 12th Night Grand Thing and Archery Academy. In Service, Jacinda of Kaldorness Seneschal

YIS, Vivien NicUldoon KaldorNess A&S: Hugh present written report. Hi Y'All! Hammer Night at Keith & Amy's continues to produce bent bits of metal, piened rivets, much clatter and consider conviviality. 15 night with 11 members (1 new)and 1 youth in attendance. Progress of armor is going apace. We should have 3 new heavy fighters, armed and armored, ready for next season. YIS, Ered Herald: Raher present, written report. Unto the Baron, Baroness, Seneschale, Chronicler, and Populace of Three Mountains do I, Raher fitz Rannulf send greetings! I fear my office has been considerably less active that I'd intended it to be this month; my plans to begin consultation nights on Fridays at Dragon's Mist's revels ran into a snag in the form of a planned vacation, failed health, and a surprise business meeting, in that order. Barring disaster, however, this should begin this week. I was unable to attend any events between last meeting and this, and thereby have nothing to report on that front. I am still seeking heralds to assist me at Honour Feast on October Fifth, and if anyone is interested, please speak to me either here tonight after the meeting, or at Revels sometime before the feast. I assure you, if you volunteer, I'll find a way to use you. I remain Your Excellencies' humble servant, Raher fitz Rannulf Page 15 Scribe: Leah, present, written report. The Baronial Scribe is busily working away on Honor Feast, and has nothing new to report this month... Chatelaine: Havoise present, written report. Autumnal greetings unto Their Excellencies Aedan and Alexandria and the Officers and populace of the Barony of Three Mountains. In terms of *personal* contacts with new people this month, I have nothing to report. However, Lady Kattera Giese set up a Facebook page, "SCA for the new player," that has not only proven to be pretty popular locally, but is also receiving some sharp attention in other parts of the Knowne World -- even as far away as Trimaris! It seems that we've struck a tender spot... in addition, I have begun *slowly* collecting information which will lead (someday) to an annotated listing of local specialty-food markets for finding those exotic or otherwise uncommon ingredients that the big-box markets don't carry. I can see the possibility of other, similar lists being constructed for, say, fabric, embellishment supplies, woodworking resources, and so on. If anyone should be inspired to tackle such a project, I'd say go for it. In service, Havoise de Rohan Gold Key: Mariotta present, written report. Gold Key Report: Nothing to report. YIS, Mariotta Chronicler: Hlutwige present, written report. Chronicler report, August 2013 Greetings, the September issue of The PLUME published on the website on September 9th. Deputy anyone? Ivon, Baron Stromgard was the first to find the plume in the September issue thanks to all who played! Other than that, I have nothing to report. With my regards, Ducessa Hlutwige Historian: Thalia present, written report. Greetings to Their Excellencies, Officers and Populace, The gathering of our baronial history continues. Special thanks to Baron Alfric who has been busy scanning the old newsletters into PDF files. I will be moving these files to the new Dropbox account that I have created to house the baronial history. I will also be burning these files to CD as an additional form of back up. There is a growing "Friends of the Washington Park Archery Range" movement that is trying to team with the City of Portland, Parks and Recreation Bureau, to help improve and maintain the archery range; I am trying to make sure that the interests of the SCA are included in this growing group, nothing else to report. Thrown Weapons practice has been happening regularly on Thursday evenings at Marguerite's home. On Saturday the 28th of September, starting at 10am, a group of volunteers will be meeting at Marguerite's home to assist with cleaning up the thrown weapons range...we will be hauling old hay bales, chopping old targets up & building new target round stands; if you have a couple of hours to donate that Saturday morning to help it would be appreciated. 17 Web Minister application: Tuesday, September 17 th, 2013 Page 17 Greetings Your Excellences, and Lords and Ladies of the Three Mountains, I am requesting to become your new Web Minister. My first event was Egils of this year, and I have since thrown myself bodily into the SCA. So far I have attended four SCA events and I have no plans on stopping. I am also in love with scribal and all things art. When I am not playing the game, I am a trained Graphic Designer, and I currently manage seven WordPress websites including my own (joshann.com). I have also made sites with Joomla and Dreamweaver. I believe adding another to manage would not be any more difficult for me. I have been doing Graphic Design, art, and web management since before finishing high school. Since joining the SCA I have wanted to do more for this wonderful organization of people and I believe that becoming your web minister would achieve that. Thank you, Alyse Peppit Clark aka Joshann Schoen-Clark Confirmations of Office applications: Events Champions, September 17, 2013 Barony of Three Mountains Champions (June 15, 2013) FINAL EVENT REPORT Total Approved Expenses: Actual Expenses: Biffies $ $ Trash (we brought our own garbage sacks) Printing & Misc Food, ice, posterboard, etc Total: $ $ Funds Not Spent: ($27.12) Total Gate Receipt: $ Site Fees NMS Fees collected: (sent to Kingdom for the 12 adult non-members that attended) Funds Remaining: $ Gate Profit : $ Total Costs:

BALANCE: $ (we came out a little ahead) There were 87 attendees: 74 adults, 10 youths, and 3 children/babies. Given the number of comps, and the comps that chose to pay their fee anyway, it s difficult to give exact figures on adult paid site fees; however, the total gate fees were double-checked (see amount above). Most all baronial items (with the exception of a few things the Baron/Baroness were taking to West War) were returned to baronial storage with our chamberlain s assistance on June 24 th, There are just two unclaimed lost and found items. [I neglected to write down the total number of pounds of donated food items, but the food drive was quite a success. Thank you Havoise!] Given the other SCA events and Father s Day on the same weekend, our 3M Champions 2013 had a very respectable turn-out. I suggest that we choose a date for next year s 3M Championship now, so that we get a more ideal date next year. [I am willing to submit the EIF (Date Reservation) form to Kingdom, if Council agrees on a date in 2014.] Below you ll find suggestions for next year s event to make it run even more smoothly. YIS, Aíbinn ingen hui Néill (Event Steward) SUGGESTIONS for 2014 Barony of 3M CHAMPIONS Event The Event Steward needs to review the online Steward s Handbook and the 3M Championship notebook early. Set up a 4-6 month timeline of tasks/contacts, and create a group list for volunteers. Contact the baronial officers at least two months out, to learn who will show up and who needs a substitute. Determine who will be the MIC s (Marshal in Charge) for Armored Fighting, Rapier, Archery, and Thrown Weapons. The current champions determine tourney formats, but are not usually the MIC. Verify that the baronial Knight Marshal will handle the final MIC forms as required. If the Event Steward is not familiar with Armored Combat, be sure to talk with the current champion to learn the tourney format. Find out what tourney format information ought to be put in the online event copy, and sent to local yahoo and Facebook groups. Be sure to publish information about all the tourney formats (armored, rapier, archery, thrown weapons) as far in advance as possible. This year, with the help of Talia and Mariotta we obtained full contact information from this year s champions. This will definitely help next year s Event Steward, as I lost a lot of time trying to get responses from two of our former champions. Having a written summary of the fees and forms needed for Gate seemed to be helpful. Of course, having a great Gate Coordinator like Selene, along with such dedicated volunteers, also made Gate work smoothly. The signage worked nicely. Laser printed paper signs spray-glued to foam core board and taped with white duct tape to eric stakes was a sturdy and neat way to make the signs. Having volunteers that helped people unload their gear over by the erics was very efficient and made it so participants were more willing to park their cars out of sight in designated parking areas. The Event Steward needs to make it very clear ahead of time that there will be food for lunch and snacks for the required officers in attendance, the coronet(s), and for the main volunteers. [Putting that food inside the house worked well because non-volunteers didn t eat it; however, I had not communicated well enough about the available food and many of our volunteers and officers brought their own food. I had too much left-over food, though thankfully some of it could be used at the evening potluck and at Sport of Kings later.] The kingdom event calendar deputy and I talked about the problem of an event dropping off the online future events calendar as of midnight on the day of the event. I asked her to request that this be changed. I m happy to report that the software guru corrected this and now the system works. Anyone can find an event online (even in the future events section) on the morning of the event, even for a one-day event! The shorter Youth Competition format was very nice. Baroness Alexandria and Tamar worked out a good system and Tamar created scoresheets. Alexandria created wonderful craft bags and we had paper/pencils/coloring items for youths to create last-minute competition scrolls. However, I have some suggestions to make it run even better next year. More details are in the 3M Champions notebook for the future event steward. A summary is below. Have printed copies of the youth competition format that is handed to parents/guardians immediately as the youths enter the competition. The adult leader should review the rules and competition sections with the parents and youths before the craft bags are distributed. [The craft bags distracted the youths and they weren t listening to the leader. A written competition summary will help all parents guide their children through every part of the tourney.] We need a better way to obtain the children s ages (birthdate?), so they aren t too young. It might also be wise to

have a rule that one parent cannot supervise more than three children in the competitions. The slips of paper to record youth service did not work efficiently. A better method could be similar to what is done at Outdoor School. Each competitor gets a drawstring bag with their name on it. All adults who can utilize volunteer youths are given a bunch of inexpensive craft beads (to be kept in a safe place). The steward, baron/baroness, and the adult in charge of the youth would have beads too. In the event copy give details of the types of volunteering and the amount of time needed to earn one bead of thanks 15 minutes per bead. Children gather earned beads in their bags and these are simply counted at the end For better efficiency I suggest that we have one adult volunteer that is in charge of the entire youth competition (and not running anything else at the event). Since parents are with their children at most of the competitions, and/or the competitions are in full view of other adults, there should not be a need for a background check; nor is this person like a pied piper. [Make sure he/she has a lunch break without kids!] Honour Feast, October 5, 2013 Hlutwige Steward present verbal report. Several folks joined me for a walk through of the site last week. The above the salt table was paced out and the head cooks reviewed the kitchen. I delivered the site fee and deposit cheques to Al who reminded me of a few of the sites requirements. The menus have been banged out and the shopping will commence. I would like to get a cheque for $800 for the food budget tonight (If I could have two, that would be keen one to Leah and one to Muirreann). The Honourable Lord Valdemere (from tribarony treaty seal fame) has stepped up to create some special coins for attendees. These coins will be worth 10 times the paper money and may either be kept as a keep sake or gambled with. Companion Vivien has devised many an entertaining game including 3 different trivia challenges which will win challengers a place above the salt. Mistress Jill is working on some fancy smancy decorations which will lend to the events overall theme of PANACHE. The Honourable Lady Beak with contributions from Dame Lutigard is preparing to dazzle all with the High Table. I am sad to say that I missed the CRIER deadline by a few days. I was under the impression that the deadline was the 28 th two months prior. It was changed some time ago to the 15 th two months prior. I sent it anyway with a note explaining my error and my assurance that I would understand should it not be printed as it was my responsibility to keep be aware of the latest information. The event will still be official though will be lacking information in the Kingdom newsletter. I hope you all will share the event information through whatever means you choose. Yule Feast December 14, 2013: Hanna Steward present written report. Greetings unto the Council and Populace of Three Mountains. 17 Sept, 2013 Report: Yule Feast Event date: 14 Dec 2013 To their Excellencies Aeden and Alexandria and this good Council of Three Mountains: Event planning for Yule with our good neighbors from Dragon s Mist continues. We have a site visit to the armory scheduled for Saturday Sept 21 so all the committee members can review the layout. We are looking for feedback from the Brewer s Guild so that we can advertise what type of contest they would like. If anyone becomes aware of a family or facility to whom we can donate our tree after the feast, please let me know. I m not sure how big it will be yet, but I m guessing at the minimum 7 foot. We have a Kingdom web site and we have opened up a Facebook event. Yours in service Hannah Tobias Archery Achadame August Steward Ilona. August (change from raffle to silent auction) July Coronation 2014: Tamar Steward present verbal report. Budget is already approved. Will be at Trojan. Yeah! Anaanannad go! Up coming events that need Stewards: Champions 2014, Honour Feast 2014, Yule Feast 2014, Phoenix Events Money Talks: Hlutwige: $600 for 4-5 compression mats and 4-5 folding tables. Purchased prior to Honour Feast. ABC d William: Attending administrative retreat. Barony will pay site fee $80. ABC d. Erica is unable to go (who will be his dep once he is official) Kaldor- Ness exchequer is also going.

Active Business: Approve minutes as printed in the September issue of The PLUME. ABC d Welcoming Court March 9, 2013: Kattera steward, Hlutwige consultant present. Not closed. Barony of Three Mountains Champions June 15, 2013 Ai binn Steward present written report. Closed. Sport of Kings, August 2013 Khalja Steward present written report. Sport of Kings happened. No one died and there was only a teeny fire. The pizza was excellent. Instructors and Class Registration: The greatest amount of pre-event effort goes into putting together the classes and instructors. Sir Ulfred and Baroness Cristiana did a stellar job of putting together the slate of classes. This year we had a lot of enthusiastic volunteer instructors from out of kingdom. Perhaps not surprisingly, we also had a lot of last minute instructor cancellations. This problem was ably handled by Sir Ulfred on site. The one thing we mess with every year is class registration because it never really works very well for us. We have over 50 instructors, over 100 classes and over 300 students so it isn't a small undertaking. We got through it thanks to Herculean efforts by Companion Vivian, Sir Justin, Lady Marian and Lady Erika. An SOK registration subcommittee has already formed and held a meeting to try to deal with this issue once and for all. Site setup: Sir Mattheus Bane and Dame Meagan debuted "The Basilica" at Sport of Kings as a court space. It seemed to be well received and enhanced the period atmosphere of the event. Sir Kathal and his crew did a wonderful of job of setting up the list field. Mistress Kateline did a wonderful job of directing the placement of pavilions. Thank you to all the setup volunteers for helping out. One thing to consider for 2015 is that the list field was set up to be pretty but not necessarily functional. List services (marshaling, heralding, lists, water bearing) weren't placed conveniently to the hub of activity which tended to gravity toward the Basilica and the footpath (where the shade was.) Some re-thinking of that design needs to occur. Special thanks to Dame Alyna Wolfstan and Sir John Wolfstan for their continued support of the event. Once again, she produced four new silk banners with the 2013 t-shirt design and Sir John set up the banners throughout the site where they looked beautiful. Thank you to the Baron and Baroness of Three Mountains for their work in dressing up the administrative area. It looked much better then in previous years. As the autocrat, I was extraordinarily pleased with the period feel of the common areas. It is wonderful that everyone that attends the event seems to understand what we are trying to create with having only period pavilions within site of the list field. We achieved that without reservation this year. SOK Market: Dame Alina did a stellar job as market steward for SOK. The market area looked really good and the staff liked the location of the market. We had a good selection of merchants that fit the theme of the event. The Field of Honor and Sir Gernon's burn (fighting pickups): After four tries, this year we were able to successfully get the Field of Honor going. Its purpose is for individual instruction for those students and instructors who are interested in one-on-one critique. The area known as "Sir Gernon's burn" was set aside as a class space, but ended up being an impromptu pick up area for those folks waiting for their turn on the Field of Honor. This was VERY well received and we should consider reprising this in SOK movie and pizza night: The VC pizza was AWESOME and very well received. Thank you for doing this. We would be interested in a repeat in 2015 if you are up to it. Of the pizza, not of the issue with the table. :) For those who had not heard, the wood fired oven was a little too hot for the table it was on and charred the surface of the table. Sir Olin and $25 made the repair. The site manager wasn't upset. In fact, he said it was the best pizza he had ever had. Special thanks to the Honorable Lord Sebastian and Lady Erika for providing the video/audio equipment for this activity. Tournaments: We learned something very valuable this year: If you mess with the list mistress in the middle of a tournament, she will shank you. Take my advice. Don't do it.

A thousand thank yous to the Honorable Lady Rusudan for the very well run tournaments and for cracking the whip on Sir Olin and Sir Ulfred to get the tournament formats decided ahead of time. This may or may not have been an issue for us in the past. The Revel: The set up of the food at revel was nothing less the stellar. It was set up in the ladies gallery at the back of the Basilica and this is also where the party happened. The honorable lady Muirrean put together an amazing spread that was gobbled up. Thank you to her and her helpers. The VC: Every time I was there, the VC was busy. They work amazing hard and we are so grateful to them for their involvement with SOK. They are so good at moving through hordes of people in a very short time. The only issues I heard afterwards had to do with space. I think the event needs better signage to differentiate between dining and class room. There seemed to be some confusion with having the buffet site on the opposite side to where it was in T-shirts: T-shirts happened. This went very well, as usual. Site tear down and storage unit load/unload: Site tear down seemed to go pretty fast. Thank you to Honorable Lady Selene for arranging for volunteers for unload at the storage unit as well as for the rest of the event. Thank you to Honorable Lady Kattera for her flexibility and collaboration and for bringing the bell out to the site when I forgot it at the storage unit. In service, Khalja Council Site: Will have it here until someone comes up with a better place. If you don t like this one, look for another. New Business: Social Night: Milwaukie Odd Fellow s Hall, first Tuesday of the month beginning October 1. ABC d Next council meeting site. Meeting ends: 8:19 Announcments: Jill working on décor for Honour Feast Sunday the 22 nd. 9-4, be there! (address) Tamar: enameling class at Achadame Meri: T-shirts going into the SC office will be for sale $10 funds to go to the Barony. Leah: Head cook for above the salt part of honour feast. Need some folks to help with High Table serving and clean up at the end of the eve. Alex: Please stay late and help clean up at our events (honour feast). Schedual it in..it will be rewarding. Murrieann: Oct 12 Achadame, come on out and have fun. We have over 100 hours of classes. Cooperative with ithra. St Helens High School. Ithra web site. Will be listed online the end of this week.
