1 CHIPS FROM THE BUZZSAW VOLUME 65, NO. 2 Chips from the Buzzsaw Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento Volume 65, No 2 July 16, 2013 CELEBRATE ROTARY IS A GIFT Program: Charlie Bamforth, U.C. Davis, Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malted and Brewing Sciences It is easy to understand how Intro to Beer and Brewing is the most popular class at U.C. Davis. Charlie Bamforth educates and entertains his audience as they learn about beer. As a result, Charlie s was selected to 2010 Playboy s Honor Roll Top 20 Professors for Changing the Classroom. He explains how beer saved the world. Created over 8000 years ago by the Samarians, the processing of beer created a healthy drink, free of bacteria that was found in water. Charlie explained the best way to drink a beer. One should never drink beer directly from a bottle or can. It should be poured with vigor into a clean glass. The foam is an important component of the drink. Even a moustache interferes with absorbing all the characteristics of a beer. Beer should be stored as cool as possible; the warmer the storage, the faster it will go stale. Beer should not be exposed to light. Brown bottles are better than green and clear ones. Several of Charlie s quotes were funny, but had some truth behind them. Most important one is beer is proof God loves us. 5 CHIPS FROM THE BUZZSAW Volume 65, Issue 2 5 CHUNKS FROM THE BUZZSAW Sara listening to a student: Last year Sara was a chairperson for the Library Reading Buddy program. Sara graduated last month and continues to volunteer. Sara is a future Rotarian! RCHS Interactors volunteered to hold signs to direct firework buyers to our Rotary firework stand. I did hear they pulled their Union cards and requested lots of breaks. This was okay with me this time due to 110' weather! The students are signing up for their 3rd summer community service project. They are volunteering for the Ice Cream Safari at the Zoo, August 17. On August 9, RCHS Interact Members will be working in conjunction with the WS Trail Riders Association and the library. We will read stories about horses and then in the parking lot we will have a horse. Kids can ask questions. Not to the horse, about the horse. Four Rotarians are members of WSTRA so it's great clubs can work together. WSTRA also sponsored an Interact student to a week long horse camp along with two Stonegate students. Dr Charyl.
