Well done David. Packed with news from around the District. Much achieved in Welcome to yet another Kiwanis year. At our Kiwanis District Convention in Darwin we heard the Taiwanese National Anthem to honour the presence of our International Counsellor Chian Chu Ching. The anthem s last line is translated as One heart, one soul, one mind and one goal. Please take time to reflect on that line. If every Australian Kiwanian accepted the task of sponsoring a new member for his or her club, the club and our District would be soaring like an eagle! Result more Kiwanians, more hearts, more souls, more minds, more hands, more energy and more for kids. Sponsor a new member and allow them to experience the fellowship, service and fun that you and others do. It s high time in a high five year! Kids need Kiwanians! Jan Let s make it a HIGH 5 year for Kiwanis Australia in new clubs in the District At least 5 new members per club. 2 Page 2 Being Governor-elect After two years on a steep learning curve as Lieutenant Governor, this year as Governor-elect the learning curve became steeper packed with intrigue and adventure. It was a busy, eventful and enjoyable year. My first mission for the year was a trip in November 2016 to Indianapolis for the education and training of Governors-elect. The education was a four day immersion with International President-elect Jim Rochford as organiser and deliverer. I met some great Kiwanians who all had enthusiasm and the Kiwanis cause at heart. I was pleased to find that sixteen were women out of the 48 Governors-elect. It is no news that the world-wide Kiwanis membership overall and in particular Australia District has been struggling to increase the number of members. More clubs are closing than opening. The Formula launched 4 years ago has not seen the growth that was anticipated. With the theme of The Eye of the Tiger Jim Rochford has declared this a year of growth with a vengeance. We are to focus on club opening and growth of existing clubs. Ultimately more Kiwanians means more service for kids. This is no revelation. We know this but it has been difficult to follow up by action since a world peak in Along with our Australian team in March I travelled to South Korea for my first Asia Pacific Convention. It was heartening to witness the enthusiasm of many of the ASPAC districts bent on growth and building clubs like as if they were planting trees. Friendly Kiwanians from Nepal, a non- district with 5 clubs, were there with the goal to grow to 20 clubs in the year. Four months later by the end of July they had 11 clubs. ASPAC far outweighs the growth of all other 7 Kiwanis Regions. It is an exciting time for Kiwanis in this region. Our Board meeting in Shepparton in May saw District Leadership Education. This was using my acquired knowledge and skills to best deliver what I had brought back from Indianapolis. It was district immersion and familiarisation of what s at hand. The state of Kiwanis globally and the reality of Kiwanis in Australia. As a team we worked it through, formed goals for the District and now it s up to the Board s teams to roll it out and support clubs to implement district goals and their own goals. After a two week holiday in Somerset and Cornwall late June, John and I ventured to the Paris International Convention in August. A first for me. The convention was sensational. It was a classy showcase opening up the wonders of the work of Kiwanians showing what we are really on about and what the impact is at the world scale. It was educational and provided top entertainment. I commend members to attend one if you haven t already. Putting a District team together has been one of many tasks. Thanks to all I approached. It was heartening to have your acceptance. Through recent family illness Bill Skully has reluctantly relinquished his District roles for the year. I thank Bill for his support this year and extend the hope that all goes well. We have also seen the recent sad passing of Past Governors, Peter Kimberley, John Bromilow, Kevin Wood and Jim Ray. Peter, John and Jim were to be continuing with District roles in They will be sorely missed. I thank the executive Tony, Peter, Ken and Bill for their support and advice over the last 3 years. I have now worked closely with Tony for three years, when he was District Secretary for the first two and this year. He does not tire of answering all my questions and he has been a rock - always there to help. He will be keeping focus again in by accepting the role of the District Eye of the Tiger. What a tiger for punishment! To the Lieutenant Governors Deb, Tony, David, Ian, Brian, Bob and Robert - your job is not easy. Thank you for your sustained support and all that you do in your Divisions. David, keep up the great work with the AK. Annette and Norm, two other regulars at Board many thanks for your companionship and what you do for the District. My gratitude to Sunriser Betty D Amore a mentor and friend - another rock. Thanks to the top enders in Tony and Paul for the great Darwin Convention and their organisation of fun and enjoyable events. It has also been pleasing that some Past Governors and former district administrators have made contact and we have had some great chats. I thank Bill Craig and Graham Mould for their recent and immediate up take of the District Convention Most appreciative. It s now moving along nicely and will be in Mildura next year. Last but not least I thank my husband for always being there and acting as a sounding board. We have an excellent partnership in life and in Kiwanis. Looking forward to a great year with everyone, Jan The year that was!

4 Page 4 Aug 24th 27th Chian Chu Ching International Counsellor in Darwin George with Div 3 Lt Governor & AK Editor David McNabb before the Saturday Dinner What a good choice for Australia. A near neighbour as our counsellor for from a district that is powering ahead with membership growth. International Counsellor Chian Chu-Ching (George) with Angela Liu (English Secretary Taiwan District) ventured here for our Convention and provided insight into this wonderful growth. How does Taiwan, a country of 24 million and about half the size of Tasmania, have 15,722 Kiwanians at the end of July this year with the number growing daily? The Taiwanese have a fierce determination and follow a team approach with a process that proves successful. While here in Darwin George kindly donated $ to our District Charitable Foundation (KADCF) and 3 medallions for each club in Australia. See next page. George and Angela had some Aussie experiences in the top end as nowhere else can do! The tasting of Kangaroo steak and crocodile meat treats were but two. Chian Chu-Ching and Angela Lui at the Friday Business Meeting George with Governor elect Jan and John Hyde We hope they had an enjoyable time and I look forward to a strong and productive relationship in the Kiwanis Year. Thank you George and Angela Governor Tony with George ready to cut the 50 year celebration cake Angela and George with gifts from the Australia District

5 Page 5 Motivating aspects of becoming and staying a Kiwanian in Taiwan Taiwan had a peak of 53 new clubs opened in 1997 resulting in 12,336 members. From this time the number of new clubs opened fluctuated and membership averaged around 11,500 thousand for a number of years in the 2000s. There has been a 36.2% increase in membership since Most of it has been since 2012 when the Taiwan district made a determined effort to increase, strengthen and create a more meaningful time for Kiwanians. For the Kiwanis year of , a goal of opening 50 new clubs as an upper stretch has been set. The Taiwan Governor for believes the goal will be achieved. That makes a goal of 5 new clubs for our Australia district pale into insignificance. The Taiwanese Kiwanian experience is caring for members and it is an honour to be asked to become and be a member of Kiwanis. At the Darwin Convention we heard from Chian Chu Chin (George) and Angela Liu that The Taiwan District has set up benefits for members that include: A caring Fund Emergency aid Education courses and refresher courses (non Kiwanis business) Leadership Development and Education for Kiwanis membership Customised free bus pass throughout Taiwan Fellowship Business network and connections A sense of honour medallions for each of the club President, Secretary and Treasurer that they wear with pride. It shows the importance of taking leadership in Kiwanis. TAIWAN: A Sense of Honour and more Leadership medallions: a sense of honour Taiwan smaller than half the size of Tasmania with 23.4 million people and over 15,000 Kiwanians. Australia with a population of 24.6 million and 850 Kiwanians. Taiwan s size in comparison International Counsellor Chian Chu Ching has been generous in donating to the District three beautiful medallions per Kiwanis club. These are for the President, Secretary and Treasurer to wear at meetings with pride. These medallions are used in Taiwan denoting a sense of honour to be a leader. The Leader then hands it on to the next person in the role. The President medallion has the symbol of the gavel, for the Secretary it s the quill and the Treasurer a key. 6 Page 6 Sept 13th -18th Jane Erickson in Melbourne Kiwanis in Australia How wonderful it was to wing our way to the end our year with the visit from Kiwanis International President Jane Erickson. Jane and husband Gus squeezed us in during their busy travel schedule and we were very honoured to meet them, hear Jane and enjoy the workshop she led. The passion she has for Kiwanis and the cause for kids is portrayed in all that Jane says and does. Her days in Melbourne included a Thursday evening event speaking in Cranbourne on the advantages of a Kiwanis Club in the community, time on local radio and visiting a secondary school. On the Friday evening Jane was guest speaker at a dinner to celebrate Kiwanis Australia s 50 years of service. The next day she held a work shop. At the Friday night Dinner we heard Jane s important message about who we are as Kiwanians. Although our membership is fewer in number than other districts Jane reminded us that in better times, over the 50 years Kiwanis has been in Australia, there are great hand prints that have been left by many. The handprints of people making a difference through a lot of positive service. There are many more handprints to go. We need to be passionate and be alive Kiwanians for the benefit of kids in the future. (This speech can be viewed on Tony Gunn s Facebook page.) The Saturday workshop covered some wonderfully led thought provoking discussion about what makes us tick, how we can be better Kiwanians, how we could improve our club meetings, our Kiwanis experience, teamwork, and the importance of understanding communication in all its forms and using it to advantage. Thank you Jane and Gus GovernorTony Gunn and other organisers & participants A group photo of Kiwanians with Jane at the workshop at the Rossdale Golf Club, Aspendale, Melbourne, September 16th 2017

7 Page 7 Sept 17th-20th Convention Planning in Mildura Bill Craig, Graham Mould, Spencer Harding, myself and our other halves, set off for Mildura to plan for Convention We had a very efficient use of time through Bill s prior organisation. Firstly we visited the iconic Grand Hotel. It is very well appointed in terms of cost, quality and choice of accommodation. Rooms are available for large gatherings, dinners as well as smaller meeting and breakout rooms. It will meet our needs exceptionally well. It s booked! August 23-26th, We then met with Julie Jewell, Business Events & Projects Manager, Mildura Rural City Council. Julie had researched and found out about Kiwanis so had some ideas on the table. With her knowledge of local personnel and what the city and region have to offer we were able to come away with a number of feasible and suitable options for our convention program. Julie is preparing a brochure very soon to advertise our convention in Mildura. Julie arranged a meeting with the Manager of the Tourist Information Centre which we visited. We later had a very worthwhile meeting with Mayor Glenn Milne. Everyone we met in Mildura couldn t have more welcoming and willing to assist with our convention. All in all a very productive, pleasant and exciting time had by all. There will be instalments in the Australian Kiwanian and through from the three organisers over time. 9 Page 9 Club SIGNATURE PROJECT 1. Annual or recurring A Signature Project has 4 components 2. High Impact service or fund raising to benefit children 3. Kiwanis brand enhancing 4. Membership and/or partnership focused KIWANIS SIGNATURE PROJECT CONTEST Last year to celebrate the great work being done by clubs, Kiwanis International offered a Signature Project Recognition Program and Contest. The program showcased the many club level projects Kiwanians undertake around the world to make a difference in communities. Each district was invited to submit one signature project to represent the district. The Kiwanis International Board Committee on Public Relations, Image and Marketing reviewed the qualifying submissions. To qualify projects had to meet the FOUR criteria for a Signature project Be a service project, fundraiser or event Benefit children Follow proper brand guidelines and use correct Kiwanis logo or other brand elements Special consideration was given to projects that included at least one Kiwanis partner and involve other civic partners or community stakeholders. Finalists and the ultimate top three were announced and recognised at the Paris International Convention in July Forty districts around the world submitted. From those it came down to the top 11 finalists. Then a Gold, Silver and Bronze Award was presented. The top was the Kiwanis Club of Des Moines, Nebraska- Iowa District with their Kiwanis Miracle League baseball facility making it possible for kids who live with disability to play and enjoy baseball. There was such a variety of projects that fitted in the I Plan INSPIRATION, IMPACT, IMAGE AND INVESTMENT with INNOVATION and INGENUITY INNOVATION There s many a great Signature Projects around Kiwanis Australia. Let s hear about them or alternatively create one and tell us about it and be in the contest! 1.
