Volume 77 Issue 21 Tuesday 29 November 2011 Pat Lamanna OAM BALWYN resident Pat LaManna is still pinching himself after being named 2009 Senior Australian of the Year. I can t believe it, I never thought it could happen to me, Mr LaManna, 76, said. The entrepreneur and philanthropist said it was a huge honour. Australia is the luckiest country in the world and we re blessed to be here, Mr LaManna said. My aim is to encourage people to appreciate our beautiful country. I want to encourage people to be generous with their time, talent or money because to do community service is the greatest pleasure in life. Mr LaManna received the award from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra on Sunday. He spent Australia Day at another ceremony at the Melbourne Town Hall with Premier John Brumby and Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle. The Italian immigrant had his first taste of community service when he donated the $700 winnings from a lottery ticket to help pay for a blind child s education. He said the feeling of helping was amazing and he was hooked.mr LaManna has been a Lions Club member for more than four decades. The philanthropist founded the Hand-to-Hand Appeal for the Bionic Hands Department at the Royal Children s Hospital and the Pat LaManna Cancer and Research Stroke Foundation which has raised $1.5 million to date. He established the annual Melbourne Passion Play in 1997, an outdoor re-enactment of the story of Christ held at Doncaster s Ruffey Lake Park, which averages an audience of about 6000 people.
Members please note new details for S. Fong Loong Managing Director Coffex Coffee Pty Ltd The address is 58 Dawson Street, Brunswick The phone & fax #s below are my direct lines. The general phone line in is Mob: Ph: (03) Fax: (03) Web: Raul s last report Here im to write the last report. I find really sad my year in Australia is gonne. But that wasnt a 'normal' year. I had amazing experiences, visited beautiful places (as im now in the edge of Sydney - Sydney tower), meet people that i will consider and bring with me for a long time! This year was my chance to grow up, be independent and learn how to live the life. I need to thank for the chance, and especially my Rotary Club (Moonee Valley), to give me the formula for a good yr and introduce me to the aussie life. Since the first day at school i started to like it. 6 subjects was a way better than my 15 in Brazil. The school starting at 9 was a dream, and finishing at 3:15 was everything i was praying for :D Made great friends there and meet wonderful teachers, that helped me along the yr. my last day at school was sad. Starting to say good bye is not an easy job!! In my rotary meetings i was always welcome. I started to built a family there since the first hour in the airport, where i meet my first host family and my counsellor. After it was just good times. I was moving like a freak, but in every single house i could come back and be there for a long time, as a real family. Talking about families, i moved again... Living now with Peter Backer and Leight. And for the one that didnt have any siblings during the yr, i have a sister now, Kate. I was very well welcome there, and im liking to share family moments with them. And they already took me to the MCG tour and to the city where Ned Kelly died. Being great!! I have just good views about the exchange program, considering that i didnt have any problems during the yr. I wanna thank Emanuel for the friendship and to give the job of advertise the program. Was amazing, because i can talk about the time of my life for a million times without getting bored. I dont have a computer on my at the moment because im in Sydney, but i hope all i wrote was enough to explaing the most amazing and fascinating time of my life. I hope i have a chance to say good bye to everyone. Thanks again!! Raul Torquato Cunha
The Four Way Test: Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Big Shock! When Norm Mollica got up to introduce his long-time friend, Pat Lamanna, we didn t expect him to announce that his brother Maurie was at his last Rotary meeting. Weekly Raffle We have a winner! Taking home a prize of $1,080 Tony Colicchia said this will help pay for the wedding. The Rotary Club of Essendon P.O Box 161 Essendon, VIC 3040 Club President: Steve Roe Club Secretary: Rob Thomas Today s Attendance 42 members and 5 guests Birthdays: John Gordon Ian Munro Mary Henderson A motorist runs a red light and is photographed by an automated police camera. In the mail a short time later, he receives a photo of his car committing the infraction and a citation for $60. Instead of paying the fine, the motorist mails the police department a photograph of three 20-dollar bills. Several days later, he gets a letter back from the police department. Inside is a photograph of a pair of handcuffs. A banker is proudly driving his brand-new Jaguar sedan around New York City. On reaching his destination, he parks the car at the curb and gets out on the traffic side. Just as he opens the door, a taxicab slams into it, ripping the door right off its hinges. The cabby drives off as if nothing extraordinary has occurred. A policeman who witnesses the whole thing walks up to the banker, who is now wailing loudly, "Ohhh myyy gaaawdd! Look what that idiot did to my new Jaaaaggguuuaar! The cop looks at the banker, shakes his head, and says, "You bankers are so damn materialistic! Here you are whining about your expensive car, and you don't even realize the cab tore off your arm!" The banker looks down at where his arm used to be and begins to wail loudly, "Ohhhh myyy gaawd, my Rolllllleeeexxx is gone!" Club Anniversaries: 1994 Paul Dalmau A big thank you to Peter Duras (Who has apparently given up the game) for his kind donation of four putters to go to the mini golf course set up at camp Getaway, Axedale.

Bugatti, Ettore (Arco Isidoro) ( ) Car manufacturer, born in Milan, Italy. He began designing cars in 1899, and set up his works in Strasbourg (1907). In world war 1 he moved to Italy and later to France, where his racing cars won international fame in the 1930s. For non-car persons, this is a make of motor car with a long history. Bugatti owners are fanatical, and a breed apart. Some Bugattis have small and closely set brake and clutch pedals, and it is said that a true aficionado binds the feet of his male children so that, when adult, their feet will fit the pedals. All models are expensive. If you come across a barn find Bugatti, which has been there for years, and can buy it for a song, do so. One such, a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S with 262,854 miles on the clock, sold at auction in February 2009 for $11.8 million. The death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 proved to be the end for the marque, and the death of his son Jean in 1939 ensured there wasn't a successor to lead the factory. No more than about 8000 cars were made. The company struggled financially, and released one last model in the 1950s, before eventually being purchased for its airplane parts business in the 1960s. Today the name is owned by Volkswagen Group, who have revived it as a builder of limited production exclusive sports cars. Type 57

Timor Leste Bairo Pite Clinic Bairo Pite Clinic (BPC) is an NGO health clinic, located in Dili, the capital of East Timor (a.k.a Timor-Leste), that provides free health care services to those in need. Prior to the Popular Consultation in 1999 when the East Timorese chose independence, it was run as a military clinic by the Indonesian government and was abandoned when Indonesian forces withdrew from East Timor in Originally, the clinic was set up to serve the immediate needs of a population affected by a humanitarian crisis. As the violence has subsided, BPC has adapted and transformed from an emergency medical service to a more comprehensive community health service. Today BPC remains one of the most highly visited health clinics in the country, seeing an average of 300 patients per day served by fifty Timorese staff and volunteers, including internationals. For more details please visit The good news: District 9800 has received a donation of Joyce electric beds from St. Vincent s Hospital and intends to transport 45 of these plus wheel chairs and birthing tables to BPC. Existing beds Replacement Beds from St. Vincent s Where we come in: The Rotary Club of Essendon has allocated $3750 from our DIK account (all funds generated from our auction night) for the transport of 25 of the beds to Dili. Where you can help: District has been advised by St. Vincent s that the beds must be collected on Thurs 29 th and Friday 30 th December to tie in with the arrival of new equipment. The timing is not great, however there are enough vehicles available, and many hands are needed to assist in loading the beds for transport to DIK at Footscray. Please contact President Steve ASAP if you can assist.
