2 The Four Way Test: Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? The Rotary Club of Essendon P.O Box 161 Essendon, VIC 3040 Club President: Steve Roe Club Secretary: Rob Thomas Dedicated Researchers Some researchers are simply dedicated. Bill Bryson, in his book A Short History of Nearly Everything, notes that Henry Crampton spent from 1906 until his death in 1956 studying the snail genus Partula in Polynesia. If his surroundings were like the tourist adverts., who would blame him? He compiled his results in fastidiously detailed tables, which have probably been studied by perhaps one or as many as three or four keen gastropodists. Another dedicated researcher was Alfred Kinsey, who was a keen entomologist. In an expedition lasting 2 years, he hiked 4,000 kilometres and amassed a collection of 300,000 wasps. That is a lot of wasps! He then transferred his interests to human sexuality, and after 20 years, published Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male and Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female five years later. Both are a good read, if that is your area of interest, but note that many of his experimental subjects were college students, and you know what they are like. Today s Attendance 35 members plus 6 guests Birthdays: Sam Morello Grant Sheldon Club Anniversaries: Ray Landgren 37yrs PDG Ian Knight, PDG Terry Barritt, Joan Barritt, Jorgen Bobenko, Richard McDonald and Hon. Member Noel O Brien Resistance to Antibiotics The use of disinfectants on surfaces (bench tops, floors, toilets) is not only futile, as the germs come right back again, it is dangerous, as the survivors eventually become resistant. Soap and water is the best approach, on hands, surfaces and so on, as the grime removed also contains the germs. Unfortunately, the plethora of advertising overcomes the health message, and the bug s reproduction rate ensures that eventually those that are not killed will be resistant to everything. This has already happened to Klebseilla Pneumoniae. One strain carries the gene NDM-1 which confers on it resistance to nearly all antibiotics, and it has now spread around the world. But what is really scary is that gram negative organisms like Klebsiella can readily exchange genes with gram negative organisms of a different genus, and have done just this with Escherichia Coli, which lives in the gut of every warm-blooded being and is ubiquitous in our environment. If antibiotic-resistant E Coli become the norm, we humans may be in trouble.

5 President Stephen s favourite aviation quotes: And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the very first Fokker airplane built in the world. The Dutch call it the mother Fokker. A military aircraft had gear problems on landing, and as the plane was skidding down the tarmac the tower controller asked if they needed assistance. From the plane came a laconic southern voice: Dunno - we ain't done crashin' yet. P = The problem logged by the pilot. S = The solution logged by the mechanic. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: No. 2 propeller seeping prop fluid. S: No. 2 propeller seepage normal. Nos. 1, 3 and 4 propellers lack normal seepage. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on backorder. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level P: Suspected crack in windscreen. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search
