2 SEARCH AND RESCUE INFORMATION - WEEKLY PERIOD: 22 JAN 18 TO 28 JAN 18 DATE/TIME INCIDENT # 22 11: : : : : : : : EMBC REGION INCIDENT ELT/ #VICTIMS # EMBC VOL LOCATED ALIVE DEAD NO COMMENTS SWE LAND Surrey SAR members responded to search for a missing 80 year old male with Alzheimer's in the Grandview Heights area of Surrey. SAR located the subject in good health. SEA LAND Revelstoke SAR members were requested to assist the RCMP with the rescue of 2 injured skiers near Revelstoke, however SAR was stood down by RCMP prior to launching the helicopter. SEA LAND Fernie SAR member responded to search for a 9 year old girl with Downs Syndrome who was missing in the 9th Avenue area of Fernie. SAR was stood down shortly after activation as the girl was located by others. SWE LAND Surrey SAR members responded to search for a despondent male in the Bear Creek Park area, of Surrey. The subject was not located and SAR was stood down by the RCMP. SAR was re-activated to continue the search the following day. The subject was found deceased by family members. VIR LAND Comox Valley SAR members responded to search for a lost skier on Mount. Washington. The skier was located in good condition by ski resort staff. SEA AIR 4 4 Revelstoke SAR members responded following a request from the RCMP, to search new coordinates for a plane with two persons on board that went missing back in November 2017, in the area north of Revelstoke (Ref: SAR ). The SAR team overflew the area but nothing was located at the coordinates provided. SEA LAND Revelstoke SAR members responded to search for a missing snowmobiler on Boulder Mountain. The subject was located in good condition and was brought out by SAR SWE LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR and 3 Mission SAR members responded to search for a female, missing since 2016, as a result of new information that was made available to the Abbotsford Police. The subject was not located and SAR was stood down. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded to rescue an injured snowmobiler in the Holt Creek area near Kickinghorse Mountain Resort. The patient was successfully rescued and transferred to BCAS. CTL LAND Vernon SAR members responded via helicopter following activation of an InReach beacon in the Lumby area. SAR was stood down when it was confirmed to be an accidental beacon activation. SEA LAND Golden SAR members responded to search for two missing snowboarders at Kickinghorse Mountain. The two subjects were rescued uninjured, by long-line. SEA LAND Kaslo SAR and 5 Arrow Lakes SAR members responded to search for an overdue male on a

3 27 21: : : : : : WEEK TOTAL YEAR TO DATE snowmobile in the Rosebury Area. The subject was located quickly by others, and SAR was stood down. SWE LAND Central Fraser Valley SAR members responded to search for a male who wandered away from a care home in Langley in his wheelchair. SAR was stood down by the RCMP who had reason to suspect the subject went to Vancouver. CTL LAND Kamloops, 6 Wells Gray, 2 Nicola Valley, 5 South Cariboo and 5 Barriere SAR members responded to rescue an injured snowmobiler at Harp Mountain near Barriere. The subject was brought out and transferred to BCAS and was deemed to be deceased. SWE LAND Coquitlam SAR member was contacted regarding a hiker with an injured ankle at Buntzen Lake, Anmore. SAR was stood down when the subject's friends were able to assist her out to an access point where she was met by BCAS. CTL LAND Shuswap and 7 Vernon SAR members responded to rescue two missing males in the Owlhead snowmobiling area in Sicamous. A member from Shuswap SAR accompanied the RCMP helicopter and spotted the subjects. Vernon SAR performed a heli winch extraction of both the subjects and transported them to Vernon instead of Sicamous due to weather. The subjects were reported to be in good condition and would be escorted back to the parking lot to retrieve their vehicle. SWE LAND Sunshine Coast SAR members responded to locate a hiker that failed to return from hiking a network of trails across from Dale Road in Sechelt. The subject was located and brought out by the SAR team alive and was transferred to BCAS. SWE LAND Whistler SAR members responded to locate an overdue snowshoer on the mountain bike trails at Logger Lake. The subject was located and brought out in good condition ELT ELT - 24

4 WEEKLY INCIDENT REPORT Jan 22 28, 2018 DANGEROUS GOODS On 22 Jan, 2018, CANUTEC reported a collision between a Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive and a fuel truck at the CP Rail yard in Port Coquitlam. This resulted in a rupture of the fuel truck tanks that were carrying ethanol and it caused an intense fire. A tactical evacuation was conducted within a 1 km radius of the site as a precaution until the fire could be controlled. The Ministry of Environment Response Officer (MOE RO) raised the incident to Code 2 (urgent status). On 24 Jan, 2018, a tanker truck carrying 40,000 Litres of fuel rolled over on Highway 3, five kilometres east of Grand Forks. None of the loaded fuel being transported leaked however there was a small spill from the saddle tanks. The MOE RO raised this incident to Code 2 (urgent status) the following day when the tanker was due to be off loaded. TSUNAMI On 23 Jan 2018, at 01:38 PST the National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) reported an earthquake initial magnitude 8.0 that was later revised to 8.2 and then finalized as 7.9, off the coast of Kodiak City, Alaska. The NTWC issued a tsunami warning for British Columbia, the Juan de Fuca coast, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, and the north coast and Haida Gwaii. Subsequently, the Provincial Emergency Notification System (PENS) was activated and a tsunami warning notification was issued to key agencies, the media and coastal areas in Tsunami Zones A, B, C, and D along the BC coast. There was no warning or advisory issued for the areas along the inner coast areas of Tsunami Zone E. The PECC and PREOCs were activated along with several coastal community EOCs and evacuations were carried out according to local plans. The confirmed maximum wave heights did not exceed 21 cm at Old Harbor, Alaska and 12 cm at Langara, Haida Gwaii. At 04:13 PST, the tsunami warning was cancelled for coastal BC. FLOODING On 22 Jan 2018, the Comox Valley Regional District was issued a task number due to flooding in the Lewis Road area of Campbell River. The residents affected were provided 72 hours of ESS assistance. On 26 Jan 2018, the Central Coast Regional District was issued a task number for flood monitoring within their district. On 28 Jan 2018, the Nanaimo Regional District was issued a task number for a flood event on Englishman River as a result of heavy rainfall from the Atmospheric River affecting Vancouver Island and the South Coast.
