The conference location, in the heart of Melbourne, is a short walking distance to the lanes, arcades, graffiti art, restaurants, bars, theatres and music venues that have made Melbourne an international city. We have as our guest James Higgins from Baltimore who will be involved in the interactive Cadaver Precourse on Wednesday at the RACS Skills Laboratory demonstrating the intricacies of harvesting and insetting the vascularised medial femoral trochlear graft for salvage of scaphoid proximal pole fractures. We also have Wayne Morrison demonstrating his technique of toe wrap-around for reconstruction of the thumb and Michael Sandow on costo chondral graft. A unique opportunity to interact with those that have made these procedures their own. Instructional type course lectures will also be lead by James Higgins and local experts on Refinements in microvascular reconstruction of the traumatised upper extremity and Functioning muscle reconstruction of the upper limb. For the associates and partners, Rita Erlich, who was the inaugural editor of The Age Good Food guide and original foodie, has kindly agreed to host a once off walking culinary tour and meet some of Melbourne s best chefs. In addition there is a walking tour of Melbourne Lanes and Graffiti art and a Fragrance master class. For those with young families, we have a list of places to go and things to do within a walk or tram ride away. I encourage all to attend, bring your partners, and enjoy Melbourne in autumn. Dr Higgins completed his undergraduate work at Williams College in Massachusetts, his medical school training at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), and his plastic surgical training at the University of Rochester. He then completed a hand surgery fellowship at the Curtis Hand Center in 2002 and became a faculty member thereafter. His clinical and research interests include vascularized bone/cartilage reconstruction of extremity nonunions, functioning muscle reconstruction of the upper limb, toe transfer digital reconstruction, complex reconstruction of upper extremity trauma and vaso-occlusive disease of the hand. Dr Higgins is an active member of multiple professional societies, serving on national administrative committees for the ASSH, AAHS, ASRM, & ABPS. In 2010 Dr Higgins was designated the Marco Godina Traveling Fellow by the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM). In 2010 Dr Higgins also selected as a travelling Visiting Professor for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He also served as the Sterling Bunnell Traveling fellow for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). Dr Higgins dedicated these years to the subject of microsurgical reconstructive of upper extremity traumatic injuries with a focus on vascularized bone and cartilage transfer. As Chief, Dr Higgins directs both the Curtis National Hand Center s civilian hand fellowship, but also the joint Walter Reed/ Curtis Hand military fellowship that has provided hand surgery training for the US Army hand surgeons since the 1960 s. He serves as a team leader for the joint hand transplantation program with the Department of Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. 4 Submission Methods (ABSTRACTS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED ELECTRONICALLY) Submission as follows via the Taylored Images website: (a) Follow the links to 2017 AHSS; click on Submit Your Abstract and follow the prompts (b) It is essential all photographs and diagrams are embedded within the document, prior to uploading the abstract (c) On submission, you will be prompted to create an account which will allow you to view & edit your abstract/s after initial submission until 1700 Friday 13 January 2017 Abstract Format All submitted abstracts MUST follow the guidelines as set by the Scientific Program Committee to be accepted. These guidelines are accessible from: ahss2017/index.html To access these guidelines select Abstracts from the above websites main menu, then Guidelines. Call for Abstracts Scientific papers are invited for oral presentations. Authors should submit abstracts written in English to Taylored Images no later than 1700 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Friday 13 January Papers received after this date will not be accepted for inclusion in this year s program. All abstracts submitted are subject to review by the Scientific Program Committee and will, if accepted, be assigned to either a 5 or 8 minute oral presentation. Authors may indicate preference for either a 5 or 8 minute oral presentation during the interactive Abstract submission process. The final allocation will be at the discretion of the scientific committee. Once abstracts have been accepted for presentation, no changes will be accepted to their content. Important Note to AHSS Non Members The AHSS rules require Proposed paper presenters to be Members of the AHSS: Either Active, Provisional, Honorary, or Corresponding. If you are not an AHSS member your application for paper selection can still be successful, as long as your submission is supported by a Member of the AHSS who shall be present in the audience at your paper presentation. You must nominate your supportive AHSS Member in the Abstract Submission process to be considered.
