Lone Star District Camporee Lake Colorado City State Park April 6th April 8th Spring 2018 Leader s Guide

To: Scoutmasters and 2nd Year Webelos Leaders, This year s theme for the 2018 Camporee is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE or MI:18 Lord Baden-Powell described Scouting as a game with a purpose. It is in that spirit that we offer this year s Camporee. This year, we are trying something new, many of the camporee activities will be conducted in the dark of night. The theme MISSION IMPOSSIBLE is designed to appeal to the sense of fun, adventure, and adventure and imagination so active in Scouts and Webelos. The camporee will be held April 6-8 at Colorado City State Park. Units should arrive on Friday evening to check in and set up camp. The program will begin Saturday morning with some of the troops starting Kayaking at their assigned times and some other activities. For the most part it is up to the units to be responsible for their troop until the scheduled activities later that evening. During the Camporee, the park will be swarming with young secret agents, (Scouts/Webelos) doing their best to accomplish several fun but challenging Night Op Mission Objectives. Each webelos den should be accompanied by their Adult leader. For Scout patrols, it is up to the discretion of the unit. Scout Patrols and Webelos Dens will be given secret orders that will direct them to their first night mission. They will be directed to 6 night missions concluding with Midnight Campfire and Dessert. After each completed night mission, they will be given sealed orders directing them to their next mission. Events will conclude by early morning and all Scouts/Webelos should be in their campsites and quiet by 1:30 AM. Please read the enclosed materials carefully. Cost per participant is $30, which includes registration, neckerchief, and meals. ($10 discount for participant for Early Bird registration before 4/1/18) See you on April 6th. District Camporee Staff!!! 2

The theme differentiates the fact that the camporee activities happen primarily Saturday evening with the Patrol Night Ops Missions in the dark culminating with a midnight campfire. The theme is designed to appeal to the sense of fun, adventure, and imagination so active in boys. In addition, the program helps to put into practice Scouting skills, team building personal reflection, physical agility and resourcefulness. Patrols are given orders to accomplish several night ops missions during the course of the evening. An adult accompanies each patrol for safety purposes. Patrols are awarded points based on their performance in achieving each mission. We think that this year s theme will be a lot of fun for the boys and adults alike. SCOUT SPIRIT will be on display throughout the Camporee. We hope to see all of the District s units--troops and crews alike-, and those of you from outside of our district once again at the LONE STAR CAMPOREE!!! 10.2 WHY A NIGHT CAMPOREE? It is a fun and exciting departure from the standard camporee format. This is especially important to those experienced Scouts that have been to other camporees and would enjoy something new and different. 7

To those Scouts involved in a busy weekend schedule of sports and other activities, it gives them the luxury of participating in those events and still complete a full experience at the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE night camporee. They don t have to choose between Scouting and other pursuits Under the cover of darkness, the environment takes on a mystery which creates a more exciting mood. the secrets of the night can be featured and appreciated. Things seem larger, farther, and more intriguing at night MEALS Dinner will be provided on Saturday Night in the form of the Lone Star Chopped Challenge. Each troop will be provided with the critical ingredients for their meal. The troop will have access to their own chuck boxes and pantry to supplement the items provided. (See 11. The Troop/Patrol is responsible for all other meals and snacks. Water is provided. Please bring your own water containers and cookware DUTCH OVEN COOK-OFF This desert competition has no rules or limitations. Feel free to enter multiple items, as individuals or as a group. You must supply your own ingredients and equipment. There may be extra Dutch Ovens available upon request. There will be only one winner! 10.5 SERVICE PROJECT As a thank you to the park for letting us use their facilities will be helping clear their new trail. This should be a relatively small service project that is appropriate for all ages. You should advise your scouts to bring gloves, work pants/shirts, tools, and their scout spirit PATROLS The Patrol is the basic unit of Scouting, and the Camporee is a great place to reinforce the Patrol Method as the means of leadership and guidance. The Camporee will: Provide an opportunity for youth leadership Test basic scouting knowledge Promote teamwork and team building Demonstrate Scout Spirit Create an environment to have fun 10.7 WEBELOS Webelos will be permitted to attend the District Camporee, if invited by their troop. For this event, the attending Webelos will be considered part of the Boy Scout Troop/Patrol they are invited by. This includes meals, camping, patrol assignments, unit recognition, etc. As such, it is critical that Webelos interested in attending go to troop planning meetings for this event YOUTH PROTECTION GUIDELINES As with all scouting events, there must be two deep leadership for the Camporee. The unit leader is at least 21 years of age or older and a registered member of the BSA. The second adult may be a registered scouter of 18 years of age, or older, or a parent of a participating scout. Leaders may rotate if necessary but at least two adults must be with the troop 24 hours a day. All adults must have current certification in Youth Protection. If not, the Adult will be asked to do so at the time of the Leader s Meeting. 8

10.9 PERSONAL POSSESSIONS Camp is an outdoor experience. A Scout is cheated out of a full outdoor experience by electronic devices. A no electronics policy is recommended. It is the policy that at no time will the scouts be allowed to text outside the park. If this is something that needs to be done it should be done through a Troop adult. In all cases, personal valuables (watches, wallets, money) should not be left out in the open. It is impossible for the staff to provide security for these valuables. Lock your valuables away in your footlocker at your campsite or leave them in the care of a unit leader. PLEASE use a permanent marker or etcher and mark all personal items with first and last name, Troop #, or all 3! Please have your boys take the time to mark their personal belongings! A Troop shakedown would be ideal to insure this takes place! HEALTH AND SAFETY Troop First Aid Kits Troops should bring their own First Aid Kit and Log Book. Many minor cuts and scratches can be handled in your own campsite. Routine medications that do not require refrigeration can be kept in a lock box at your campsite Medications All prescription drugs (including those needing refrigeration) are to be locked up. An exception may be made for a limited amount of medication to be carried by a camper, leader, parent, or staff member for life-threatening conditions, including bee-sting or heart medication, and inhalers, or for a limited amount of medication approved for use in a first aid kit Wild Animals Camp is an outdoor experience, and as such, we are visitors to the camp s natural area. As Scouts, we must remember to live up to the Outdoor Code and be considerate in the outdoors. Throwing rocks at or attempting to catch animals such as rabbits, snakes, armadillos, skunks, etc., is not only dangerous to the animal, but to campers as well. Please report any troubles with snakes or other animals to the camp staff immediately BANNED ITEMS Flammables Fires are to be built only in the designated areas and under proper supervision. Liquid and propane fuels are to be used only under adult supervision. Bulk liquid fuels must be stored under lock and key in a location designated by the Camp Quartermaster. Under NO circumstances are they to be stored in the campsite. Liquid fuels must not be used on open fires or to start a fire. Empty cylinders and cans must be given to the Camp Quartermaster for disposal. National policy prohibits the use of open flames in tents. This includes mosquito coils, catalytic heaters, gas lanterns, stoves, candles, and smoking material. ALL TENTS AND FLIES MUST BE MARKED "NO FLAMES IN TENTS". Fire pits are located at campsite and are available to use for troop use. Leaving your campsite while the fire is anything but cold to the touch will terminate your fire privileges, without exceptions. Additionally, you are expected to follow all park policies regarding fire use Alcohol & Illegal Drugs The consumption, possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs or controlled substances while participating in the program of the Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch is not permitted. We will enforce all local, state, and federal laws where violations involving the above are reported. Violators will be asked to leave camp immediately Smoking and Tobacco Smoking and Tobacco Use is banned in the presence of minors. THE BUFFALO TRAIL COUNCIL CAMPING COMMITTEE HAS ESTABLISHED A SPECIFIC SMOKING AREA. It is required by BSA policy that leaders who smoke do so ONLY in the designated area. The use of tobacco in any form by underage campers is not allowed. 9

11 EVENTS, CONTESTS AND AWARDS The Camporee will include competitions for patrols and troops alike. There will be some events scheduled for the troops for Saturday. Each troop will be assigned a time to go Kayaking. We ask that the troops play a friendly competition of capture the flag, and participate in the chopped challenge, and dutch oven competition. Each troop will be given points for participation Lone Star Gateway Building Contest We will also have a group class on lashings and pioneering in which the troops will learn what they need to build their gateways. We ask that each troop then go back and make a gateway for their Campsite. It is recommended that if possible to look at gateways prior to coming out Lone Star Chopped Challenge This year each troop will be given the same ingredients for their basket. They can however use items out of their chuck box and their pantry to complete their Dinners. There is one requirement is that the ingredients provided must be the star and we must be able to taste these ingredients. Each Troop will make one plate that will be enough for eight bites of their creations for the Judges to taste. The plate will be taken to Campsite 105 to be judged at the designated time on the schedule Dauntless Award Each troop will compete to earn the 2nd annual Dauntless Award. This award combines Patrol/ troop spirit, the participation of the Saturday activities, Campsite inspections (x, and Saturday Evening Ops.
