1 Volume 7 Issue 11 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2015 THE RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB OF LINCOLN HILLS IS A NON- PROFIT ORGANIZATION FORMED BY INDIVIDUALS WITH AN INTEREST IN: The restoration, preservation, and enjoyment of collector vehicles, such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American-powered vehicles 1972 and older. We use this strong Interest to facilitate fund raising and community service to non profit organizations and people in need. Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM at STRIKES 5681 Lonetree Blvd. Rocklin Everyone is Welcome Our President s Message Even though the last week has been warmer than average, the summer heat is gone and the days are getting shorter. There will be a few toy runs; some weekly Cruise In s are still going on including the weekly Cruise In at Mel s in Auburn. For the most part the Northern California Car show season for 2015 is coming to an end. I was pleased to hear that we were well represented at the Unveil Lincoln Celebration. I think it s important that we support the city of Lincoln in view of the support we receive from the City and local merchants for our annual car show. NOVEMBER 26TH ACCC will again host the Butch Gardner Clubhouse at the 66 th Sacramento Autorama Friday, February 12 th, through Sunday, February 14 th, Last year George Funk and I represented Rods & Relics in the Clubhouse. A very poor showing for what I like to think of as one of the premier car clubs in the Sacramento area. I hope we can get better participation in I know some of you are concerned that it might rain when the cars have to be moved in or out, but it s not that tough to clean them up if it should rain. We need to know soon how many members will participate as the Clubhouse sells out every year. Be sure to mark Sunday December 6 th on your calendar, that s the evening of the Rods & Relics Christmas Party at the Meridian in Sun City. Hope to see a good turn out, it will be a fun evening. Cruise Safe.. Ray Geiger

4 THE TOUR Tuesday, October 6th, Julie & I headed to the Waffle Farm for another great breakfast and small talk with fellow Relics. I counted around 18 Relics sitting around enjoying themselves. After breakfast, we headed over to the Coonen residence in Sun City, for a tour of memorabilia. Patrick and his wife, Cheryl, have been collecting over a lifetime. The first thing that we saw as we entered through the garage was a stock, 1957 cherry red Bel Air convertible parked along side a 1950 customized Mercury. The Merc was chopped and had a 1955 Chevy dash in it, one of my favorite cars of all time. Then we entered the house and everywhere you looked were posters, pictures, records, even an old Wurlitzer Juke Box dating back to the 50 s. Full-sized posters of Elvis, Marilyn, James Dean, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, John Wayne and I m sure I missed a couple. I wanted to bring home the Marilyn Monroe but no deal! There was a room dedicated to Elvis and there must have been 1000 items just relating to him. You have to see this collection! Page 4 It was a great tour and the host could tell you where they picked up almost every thing they have collected. All the Relics, including me, could relate to just about everything they have, it was a lot of fun. All of us could relate to just about everything they have. maybe in the future we can get another group of Relics together and do it again. They also have a candy machine full of candy that works! Patrick was also signing his book, Compilation of Thoughts written by him, and giving out copies to those interested. Julie brought one home and loves it. USS Arizona Night drops anchor on another day. A new cast prepares for the same play. Eleven-hundred souls forged in a watery grave. Cleansed daily by the tears of visitors. Patrick Coonen was inspired to write this poem after visiting the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The National Park Service appreciated the poem enough to display it at the monument site, and the Naval History News published its history. PLANNING AHEAD - CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS Christmas is for Kids Toy Run hosted by the Cappuccino Cruisers & Denny s Folsom on December 5th, from 9 AM to 2PM. Entry fee is 1 new unwrapped toy or $20. 5 LAST FEEL-GOOD SHOW FOR 2015 AT THE SIERRA REGENCY Page 5 Hello everyone, the results are in and what a great host Sierra Regency was today as well as last year. It all started at Strikes where we all gathered in anticipation of a great day and fun event at the retirement community. We had 18 cars and 19 members, Mike Roby was nice enough to show up, although his beautiful Nova was a little under the weather that day. As I have said before, if you like our car hobby, then not too much is better than seeing 18 cars head anywhere together. And when you tie into a great cause with a great host, then all the better. At Sierra Regency, this was our second year in a row and it is now going to be an annual event each year in October, they want us back next year. The setting is perfect, a lot of shade, tables and chairs everywhere for people to sit, relax, check the cars out and Great music listen to the live entertainment. Coffee and doughnuts in the morning after we staged our cars all in a special area. The band played a lot of oldies and took a lot of requests. There was dancing and just a great time to be had. Lunch was again over the top, plenty to eat and ice cream for dessert. It's fun to just relax around our cars, reminisce ( I had to look that word up to spell it) with everyone and tell stories of the good old days. It makes me feel good as well as I am sure the rest of us to see these senior citizens come out and enjoy our cars. Hopefully next year we will have another great turn out. I want to thank everyone who came out and helped make this another successful and great event for the Rods and Relics as well as brightening the day for some nice people. Alan Taylor NOVEMBER CAR SHOW TOYS FOR TOTS - SATURDAY November 14th from 2 to 8 PM at the Taqueria El Folsom Blvd in the Raleys Shopping Center. Donation of 1 unwrapped toy or $20 entry fee. Hosted by the Mean Machines Car Club and the Atomic Angels for all classic cars. Vendors, 50/50, awards lots of Raffle Prizes and live music by the Soul Shakers. For more info call Karen or

6 BAILON S BLAST FROM THE PAST Sunday, October 11th, I awoke in the wee morning and tried to wake Julie, but to no avail. So off to the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn alone to Joe Bailon s Blast to the Past car show. Got there about 7:15 AM and no line going into the fairgrounds, thought I was at the wrong place, or the wrong day, but cruised on into the Fairgrounds and there were about 25 or so cars parked. I had my choice for just about any place. I spied Gary McCoig and parked next to him and got set up and then sat down to watch as the fairgrounds filled up with 250 cars, including President Ray Geiger, a good number. The weather was perfect for a car show. Old Joe Bailon was there, selling a bunch of his old trophies and other stuff that he had collected over a lifetime. We passed the time of day with him and got to shake hands, now that s a real privilege. Joe goes back to the late 40s, the beginning of customized cars, he is credited with creating the paint color Candy Apple Red. He customized cars for Danny Thomas, Dean Martin, Zsa Zsa Gabor and many other famous people. He was a real pioneer and a legend along with the Barris Brothers, Dean Jefferies, Von Dutch, Daryl Starbird and so many others. I grew up reading the Hot Rod Mags back in the 50 s and 60 s and couldn t wait until the next edition, to see what one of these guys had created. The trophies were unique for they had a candy apple red apple on the top of them and Joe handed most of them out to each recipient had their photo taken with him and he autographed them. Sure would have loved to add one of those to my mini collection of trophies but was not to be. Nice show and it s close by, just minutes away. Lots of shade, we need to get the club to gather up their cars and cruise on over to this show next year. Ed McVey On Thursday, October 1, 16 of our Car Club members attended the ENGEO Customer Appreciation Bar-B- Que hosted by Jon Boland, returning member. The "Grill Master" did his magic providing wonderful ribs, chicken, and delicious 'fixins! Rain had threatened the day before, but Thursday evening was lovely, with a balmy breeze. ENGEO's employees and customers enjoyed checking out our cars and voting on a favorite. This year the winner was Fred Krohn's '39 Ford Pickup Truck. Congratulations, Fred! All in all, we had another fun, safe, outing for our Club members. Cheers! Rich Ragan To: Rods & Relics Members and Friends, I am happy that we had a good turn out for the Unveil Lincoln celebration when I was out of town. We received the following letter dated Oct. 20, from Matthew Brower, our new City Manager. Thank you for helping make our Unveil Lincoln celebration such a huge success! It has been some time since the City of Lincoln has been able to celebrate our successes, and with your help we were able to do that in a big way. They often say "it takes a village." and in the case of our Unveil Lincoln celebration, that was certainly true! Your participation in the celebration is much appreciated, and judging by the smiles on the faces of those in attendance, I can say with some certainly that the event was enjoyed by all. I just want you to know how much I appreciate your help and participation. I am so proud to be part of a community with so much heart and spirit! Sincerely Matthew Bower Page 6

7 DOWNTOWN LINCOLN CELEBRATION Page 7 CAPITAL CITY CRUISER CLUB CAR SHOW Six of our Rods & Relics members braved the weather Sunday and motored over to the Palladio Mall in Folsom. Myself, Rich Ragan, Ed McVey, Bob Fish, Gary McCoig and new members Bill & Jeanette Ainley with their cool 57 Ford Skyliner retractable. Rich Ragan did receive a trophy for 2nd place in the 1920 s Modified Class. The Corvette Club won the Club award for most members at the show. I thought we were told that food & drink would be available this year to purchase, but that did not happen. Coffee & donuts were provided for those registered in the show. The weather held and a good time was had by all. There was a wild 57 Studebaker that won Best Muscle Car and a beautiful $$$ 60's Chevrolet truck won Best of Show. For the five of us without wives, our credit cards did not have to be used at the Mall. George Funk Saturday, October 17th, 22 of the Rods & Relics Club s finest met at McBean Park to line up for the short trip to downtown Lincoln. This was around 9:30 AM, it looked like rain and around 10:30 it not only looked like rain, it felt like rain. The downpour lasted a good 45 minutes and then the sun and clouds took turns coming and going. A good time for breakfast at Kim s Kitchen. Traffic was diverted around Lincoln Blvd so that thirty or more vendors were able to set up and we were parked on 5th Street, mostly in front of Beermanns. This was a Lincoln Blvd celebration put on by the City of Lincoln, the weather made for less foot traffic but those that braved the rain were pleased with all of the activities. The cattle drive down the boulevard was a sight most never see and the horses were beautiful and well-mannered. The plaza was full of activities and pretty full of parents and children enjoying the bounce house and many other ventures. Our club could partner with the city to put on a joint Car Show, Farmers Market and vendors fair. They could put the vendors on the east side of Lincoln Blvd (like they did on Saturday), and we could put cars on the west side and all over the rest of town, like we normally do. A Farmers market could also be added, maybe in the plaza. Just thinking out loud. It was a nice gathering of Rods & Relics members and we enjoyed every minute of it. Ed McVey The new mural is absolutely beautiful and a welcomed addition to the City of Lincoln. It was a very special day, and I was glad to be part of it. The Editor
