2 2 CAUGHT IN THE HEADLIGHTS GETTING TO KNOW ED BRANCO I was born, raised and went to school in Merced, CA. A friend said I was born in that one horse town and never had enough money to buy a horse to get out of it! My first car was a 1946 Chevy, I paid $300 for it and later traded it in for $200. My interest in cars started when I was 8 years old and drove my brothers 1940 Buick into a ditch with the front right wheel, which caused the left rear coil spring to uncoil A LOT. I had three older brothers that brought their new cars when they came home for the holidays and other times of the year. They made me a deal that they would let me drive their cars around the yard if I would wash their cars. Their cars were a 1948 Chevy Aero sedan, a window pick -up, a 1950 Chevy Fleetline, a 1950 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, a 1950 Dodge Cornet, a 1952 Pontiac Chieftain, a 1953 Buick Special, a 1953 Chevy Coupe and a 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88. I began to phase out my non-profit car wash business when I got my first car in I graduated in 1955 and went to work in the building construction trade and I also started raising cattle at that time. I continued with both until I retired in The last 35 years I worked as an estimator and project manager throughout the valley and bay area. I wore out a lot of cars and trucks. When I retired I still had a 1943 Military Jeep, a 1949 Dodge 5 window pickup, a 1956 GMC 2 ton truck with 18 foot cattle racks, a 1960 Chevy Impala, 4 door hardtop, a 1968 Dodge 1/2 ton pickup, a 1972 Chevy Impala 4 dr, a 1974 Buick Electra 4 dr ht, a 1982 Chevy Caprice Classic 4 dr, a 1983 Olds Regency, 2 dr, a 1983 Olds Regency Brougham 4 dr, a 1986 Chevy 1 ton truck, a 2004 GMC 2500 pickup and a 2006 Chevy Avalanche. I met my wife, Lee, in 1961 at a dance and we married in We bought some land in the country near Merced where we could have cattle and horses. I liked to ride horses, but Lee never liked horseback riding. She liked taking care of the calves that were born each year on the ranch. Now we both like the groups we have joined in Lincoln Hills, Bocce Ball, Bunco, Ballroom Dancing and the Portuguese Club. Lee has a ladies luncheon group and plays Bingo. She is also a mail box captain with the neighborhood Watch. We moved to this area in 2008 to be closer to our daughter, Denise, who lives in Roseville. Denise has always been a big help to us. She is our daughter, cowgirl, horsewoman and sometimes she s had to be our son. My favorite car must be my 1960 Chevy Impala, I bought it new and still have it. I like being a member of the Rods & Relics Club because of the camaraderie. We have met a lot of good people in the club. Ed & Lee Branco

5 5 TECH HINTS & TIPS WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR CHRISTMAS? STEVE FOWLER When you were a kid, that was your favorite phrase this time of year. But for a middle-aged (we are going to live to be 120, right?) car guy, picking a gift can be tough. My wife swears I have everything auto-related, often two or three of each, and she s mostly right. In trying to come up with a top ten list, my eyes were opened to other possibilities, so I ll try to just come up with some categories you can share with your loved ones, and spare them the anguish of trying to find that impossible-to buy- for gift. KEEP IT CLEAN- The car, that is. There are many products out there to help in that process- water blades, dusters, chemicals, washing systems (I love my Mr. Clean Auto Dry), you name it, it exists. And we use that stuff up, so resupplying is fair game. PERSONALIZE- We re all proud of our cars. A mug or a T-shirt with a picture of the car is cool, and with a digital camera, a printer, and transfer paper, this can be a do-ityourself project for the giver with more talent than money. You can get customized floor mats, car covers, etc. A model of your favorite car is always cool (who makes a 35 Packard model? Darn!). ELECTRONICS- Lots of cool giszmos out there these days. A Bluetooth unit, a GPS, a satellite radio, or an I- pod or USB-capable stereo could be serious possibilities. It s nice to have tunes to listen to on a long road trip. You are planning some of those, right? Gotta drive em! CLOTHING- Jackets, shirts and hats can be logo ed for your favorite brand, model or group (the club). Also, gloves for winter driving and sunglasses. BTW- saw an interesting that suggested using sunglasses in a driving rainstorm- it makes it possible to see through the falling rain and road spray. SAFETY ITEMS- Several neat things out there. LED road flares; a personal power supply that has a flashlight, can jump start and can run AC stuff; a neat little safety tool that can break glass, cut seat belts, check tire pressure and glows in the dark--- lots of cool stuff. Try sharperimage.com for some cool things. BOOKS AND LITERATURE- A book about your favorite marquee can be cool. One of the coolest I ve found (out of print- got mine on Amazon) is Encyclopedia of American Cars. Tons of interesting facts and info on even the oddball makes I love. A magazine subscription can be a neat gift, also. FINE ART- Every year we get a calendar for the office from Dale Klee (oldcarart.com), and he has many fine prints available for old car people like us. Another website AUTO CLUB MEMBERSHIP- As in AAA or Allstate. In case you qualify for a YUGO award, it s nice to have coverage. TOOL STORAGE- A new toolbox, a garage cabinet system, you can get anything from an organizer pouch for road trip emergency tools to a new garage with a lift and a wide-screen TV (and a fridge for the beer-lovers) Something for every budget. A DAY AT THE TRACK- A driving school or a day at a track like Thunder Hill is an awesome gift, if you can afford it. For most, a bucket-list item. GIFT CERTIFICATES- If you can t figure anything else out, a gift certificate to the favorite auto or tool store is always useful. Merry Christmas don t forget the real reason for the season. And Happy Motoring. SF
