1 Volume 10 Issue 7 RODS & RELICS CAR CLUB NEWSLETTER July 2018 The Rods & Relics Car Club of Lincoln Hills is a nonprofit organization formed by individuals with an interest in: The restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector vehicles such as Original, Antiques, Classics, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Special Interest, Modified, and other American or American powered and 1975 or older. We use this strong interest to facilitate fundraising and community service to nonprofit organizations and people in need. Rods & Relics meet every 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at Turkey Creek Golf Club 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln Everyone Welcome Rods & Relics of Lincoln Hills P.O. Box 93 Lincoln CA PRESIDENT S MESSAGE ~ Ray Geiger June has been a very busy month, starting out with our Downtown Lincoln Classic Car Show Saturday, June 2 nd. It was a very successful show with 425 participants including our club cars. Show participants voted for their favorite Rods & Relics Club Car and when the votes were counted the winner was Clark Smith s Ford Falcon. Again, I want to thank Rich Ragan and Mike Carvidi, our Car Show Co-chairs, their committee chairpersons and everyone that pitched in to help make it a very successful show. At the show and when attending other shows since then, I have had a number of people tell me how much they enjoy our show. Club members engaged in a number of other activities during the month. For some time club members have helped the Friends of the Lincoln Library when they put on a book sale. Friday, June 8 th, several members pitched in to help set out books for the sale on Saturday. Dan & Carol Larsen helped out again Saturday. Most of the others that usually help out on Saturday were attending the Fieldhaven fundraiser. Sunday a number of members gathered at the Target on Sierra College and Hwy 80. We cruised up Taylor road to the Valencia Club where we enjoyed breakfast before going to Al s Metal Spinning to see how metal spinning is done and some of the products that can be spun out of metal. Over the years Al Blanca has made a number of automotive products such as cowl lights and headlights, as well as special hubcaps. Thanks to Alan Taylor for arranging the outing and to John Cunningham who gave him the idea after he saw some of the work Al did at the ACCC Legislative Conference. On Saturday June 16 th, members attended the Mustang & Ford show at the Marriott and on Sunday several members participated in the show held monthly at the Antique Trove in Roseville. The Antique Trove is popular because they have free coffee and donuts in the morning and free hot dogs at noon then you can go in the store and find all the neat things you can buy! Tuesday, June 19 th, we assembled at Strikes to cruise down to Eskaton in Carmichael. Our cruise leader left some of us behind on the way down but eventually we all found the place, parked and enjoyed a great visit arranged by club member, Clark Smith a resident at Eskaton. A Stanley Steamer owned by one of the residents was the star of the show. Saturday, June 23 rd, several members were registered for the Burgieman Show in West Sacramento. We decided to skip the show, since they were forecasting temperatures over 100. In addition to the activities listed, a number of us also attended our Tuesday morning breakfasts. While activities slow down a little in July there is still plenty to do. Until next month cruise safe!

2 Downtown Lincoln Car Show Update ~ Rich Ragan A review of the Car Show s revenues and expenses was conducted at the June 18 Board meeting. Thank you, George, for all the detailed accounting! It was determined that the following distribution of the proceeds will be recommended and voted on at the June 21 General Business Meeting. The National Down Syndrome Coalition $4,500 Ride to Walk $4,500 RRUFF Healing Heroes $4,500 VFW Auxiliary $500 These amounts were presented at the General Business Meeting and approved. I will be notifying the recipients of our donation to their organizations. The checks will be presented at 6:00 p.m. sharp at the August 16 General Business Meeting. Each representative will briefly inform us on how the funds will be used. PLAN TO JOIN US MARK YOUR CALENDAR! The success of this major event would not have been possible without the support and help of over 35 Club members who were divided up and assigned to 10 Chairpersons. A celebration dinner to honor the Chairperson s hard work and dedication will be held on July 12. Mike Carvidi and I were most fortunate to work with such a highly motivated group of individuals. Our heartfelt thanks to ALL who participated! 2018 Best of Show The Townsman Car Show ~ Ed McVey It was a great day for a car show and the Townsman Car Club got real lucky, hope we get the same weather in a few weeks for our car show, we can hope We left Target with eleven cars in line & as we pulled onto Sierra College Blvd. Clark Smith fell into line. So, I was thinking our club is alive & well. It was about a seven minute drive over to the Loomis Train Depot and we pulled into the parking lot and that's when things got a little dicy. Too many cars turning into line and we got kind of separated one from another and it took a while to get us and a lot of others parked. But we where all parked pretty close to one another. So it was OK. As I walked around the parked cars I spotted three more Rods & Relics Cars, so we had 15 in all. That's really a great turn out by our club. They have a bazillion raffle prizes and some of them are expensive, I'm thinking they must have some billionaires in their club. Make's me wonder what Julie s sister & brotherin-law are doing in the Townsmen. In all, they had about 240 cars all packed into a small area. But they still had room for another dozen or so cars. None of us took home a trophy. You would think with 15 cars in the show we would have been awarded at least six or seven trophys. I just don't know how they missed my fabulous Stude. Must have been because I was parked right behind this old Maroon Cord...or whatever it was.

3 Sacramento Italian Car Club Show ~ Gary Righetti The day after our car show I went to the Sacramento Italian Car Club s show down on Folsom & 52nd. It started out that there would be 4 of us (Myself & Emilie, Craig & Tami Jones, Bob Fish & Murrill Conley), but Murrill had somewhere else to be. Last year there was over 200 cars, this year there were several other shows in the area and they had about 100 or so. They have live and DJ music a great lunch (Pulled pork sandwich, Coleslaw, Potato salad & the best Minestrone soup). Very large portions! It is included with the entry of $35. Its is a great little neighborhood in the old Little Italy area. Neighborhood bar. Craig even got a hair cut & beard trim for $18!! At the old time barbershop. They had a great raffle (the main attraction was what seemed to be a never ending supply of Columbus Salami). They had some beautiful car art to auction off and great trophies. All proceeds go to the police department K9 unit. It got very hot a the end of the show. It was a fun time for all. Tami won a salami and necklace and Emilie won a salami and I got picked as Top Ten and got a trophy. Nice day, maybe we can get a group together for next year. Sunday Cruise ~ Alan Taylor Well folks another great day experienced by some lucky club members on a beautiful Sunday in June. What did we do you ask? We took our hot rods, pickups, muscle cars and street rods on a nice little drive for some grub and then onto a great and very interesting shop tour. It was so much fun to me anyhow, as I have stated before, I get tired of going to the same old car shows, walking around a little and then just sitting behind my car. On this day we met up at the new Target lot. There were 14 cars in all and 18 people, some brought their better halves. We headed up Taylor Road to the famous Valencia Club for breakfast. We arrived a little early tried to break in, actually just tried the doors, but they were not opening up till right at 10:00 AM, their official opening time. I was a little surprised, hell, I have been on runs where they have opened a bar up early just so we have totty for the body. At 10:00 AM we stormed into the joint, what I call a old school bar. They were a little overwhelmed, with one bartender and a helper. They ran out of menus and some needed a whiskey, etc. After the dust settled we all settled into tables and bar stools, had some food and drinks, obviously not all booze. After breakfast the procession of very cool cars headed up Taylor Road to our final destination. It is so cool to lead or just even see a group of our cars on the highway bunched together like a squadron of fighter planes ( boy am I getting caught up with everything). We all stayed together and did not lose anybody, which happens from time to time. The final destination was Al's Metal Spinning Co. Now I know what spinning metal is. Al did a great tour of what he makes and even showed us how some it all works and comes together. You simply just have to have the talent to make stuff like this. It was truly amazing. Al is an iconic figure in our hobby. He used to put on the great Sunday Show in downtown Newcastle, does the Denny's Car Show the first Thursday of the month and co-hosts a radio talk show on Sunday mornings called Cruisin Garage, just to mention a few things. It is people like Al who keep our hobby going...forever I hope. I will be planning more rod runs. Hope you can dust off the old cars and get out there.

4 Mustangs & Fords at the Marriott ~ Ray Gieger The 22nd Annual Mustangs & Fords at the Marriott was held on Saturday June 16th. I decided to enter the show this year. The show is limited to Ford or Ford powered vehicles. Cars are parked by type and years, which is helpful when judging, since you can see all the vehicles in a class to determine which you like best. While we have a number of Fords in our club, only Clark Smith with his Falcon and I with my 29 participated, Several members, Rich Ragan, Joe Alteri, and Ralph Lacaze came out to check out the cars, Bud Van Cott also came out to check out the cars and the Dyno Testing that was offered at the show. Clark Smith had to leave before the awards were given out so when his name was called as a winner in the Falcon Class, I picked up the award to give to him when we visited Eskaton a few days after the show. He was pleasantly surprised when he saw the trophy sitting in front of his car.. Classics, Cats and Cabernet ~ Rich Ragan Seven vehicles, with their owners, meandered out to the FieldHaven Feline Center in northeast Lincoln on Saturday, June 9. The group consisted of Ed and Julie McVey, Chuck and Gloria Scott, Ray Geiger, and Rich and Elna Ragan who were joined by the following first-timers to the event: Cal and Luana Wheeler, George and Karen Funk, and Jared and Patty Hawkins. Murrill and Elaine Conley arrived later. Two tables were picked out that were in the shade all afternoon. There was a slight breeze the nice weather cooperated. There was a Raffle, a Silent Auction during the afternoon, and a Live Auction that started at 7:00 p.m. with a total of 19 items up for bid. Among the many items were SF Giants tickets behind home plate, an instant wine cellar: 101 bottles of wine, and a South African Photo Safari. The buffet was worth waiting for offering pork tenderloin with ginger apricot sauce, chicken in a madeira cream sauce, spring salad, green beans, grilled vegetables, pasta, bread, and a variety of tasty baked desserts, plus ice cream sundaes. Beer, wine, lemonade, iced tea, and water was readily available. It was a fun, relaxing time with Club members and friends.

5 Louie Luau Car Show ~ Ray Gieger The Louie Luau Car Show was held in the parking lot behind Sportsman s Warehouse in Rocklin Saturday, June 9th. Since it was so close to home and benefited the Destiny Food Bank I thought a number of our members would attend, but there were only two of us. Curt Bartley and his Blown 68 Camaro and I with my 29 Ford were the only club members participating although one or two more came out to check out the cars. It was a nice show, although I much prefer shows held in parks or downtown areas over shows held in parking lots. They had a good raffle, a number of vendors, food vendors and a DJ playing oldies and luau music. About 100 cars and trucks participated in the show. When it came time for awards, my 29 won The Waikiki Award-Best of the Tweens-20 s. In keeping with the Hawaiian theme all the trophies had a surfer on top. As soon as I picked up my award, I hopped in the 29 to head to Kilaga Springs Lodge to meet up with Rich Ragan and other club members leaving for the show at Fieldhaven. Memorial Day Show at the California Auto Museum ~ Clark Smith I was the only R and R member that attended this show. There were 200 cars half of them were Corvettes. The Highlight of the show was admission to the Museum. If you haven t been there recently it is very much worth a trip. Also there was a Model T there. It was fully restored and a driver. In addition there was a Falcon Station Wagon parked next to me. First time they had shown it. They won an award. They were so excited. Good to see people getting recognized for the work they put into our hobby. Eskaton Feel Good Show ~ George Funk For the 53 Rods & Relics members who missed another great "Feel Good" show, shame on you. Clark Smith pulled out all the stops to put on a great show. No beer & wine like the show at the Sierra Regency in Roseville, but the food and setting was great. You all missed out on a unbelievable Stanley Steamer which the owner, who lives there at Eskaton, had on display. He had just gone through a 2 year restoration ($350,000.00). What a car. A good time(in the shade) was had by all. Life is short. You need to get that car out and enjoy the members of your club and the car experience. I hope that s what you joined this club for. Thanks again, Clark. Burgiemen Show ~ Clark Smith This show is on the grass with plenty of shade and next to the River in West Sac. Bob Fish and I were there. Really good full Breakfast and Lunch were served. Great raffle and silent auction prizes. This is a show not to miss. They fill up fast so jump on it as soon as you see the announcement. You have to have a reservation.

6 Mel s Diner ~ Ed McVey Mel s Diner up in Auburn is just a thirty minute drive from Lincoln and well worth the time. They have a nice spot on Highway 49 to Grass Valley, great food and always a nice crowd of friendly car people. We had a total of six cars heading up the old highway. One was a 1958 Porsche. I think it was a Speedster. I don't know my Porsches very well, a car that I only admired from afar. The driver was a family member of Mike Carvidi, In his, as Julie calls, a sparkling High Boy. Also along for the drive was Ray, Rich, the Wheelers...Cal & Luana. We got there, parked and after a look around headed into Mels to eat. We all pretty much stuffed our selves, but Rich out did us all with a giant milk shake. We had to hang around while he refilled his extra large glass about a gazillion times, I kid you not. Anyway, around 7:30 PM we headed home. We really need to go a couple more times this summer...get a bunch of R&R guys & gals and do it.
